Ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA) is used as a high-level disinfectant for reusable medical devices in healthcare settings. The ACGIH recently adopted a Threshold Limit Value-Surface Limit (TLV-SL; 25 µg/100 cm2) for OPA surface contamination to prevent induction of dermal and respiratory sensitization following dermal exposure. However, there is no current validated method to measure OPA surface contamination. This study aimed to develop a standardized approach for sample collection and quantitative determination of OPA from work surfaces for use in risk assessment practices. The reported method utilises readily available commercial wipes to collect surface samples coupled with direct detection of OPA via liquid chromatography time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-ToF-MS). This approach avoided complex derivatization steps commonly required for the analysis of aldehydes. Method evaluation was conducted in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) surface sampling guidelines. Overall recoveries of 25 µg/100 cm2 of OPA from stainless steel and glass surfaces were 70% and 72%, respectively. The reported LOD for this method was 1.1 µg/sample and the LOQ was 3.7 µg/sample. OPA remained stable on the sampling medium for up to 10 days, when stored at 4 °C. The method was demonstrated in a workplace surface assessment at a local hospital sterilising unit, successfully detecting OPA on work surfaces. This method is intended to supplement airborne exposure assessment and provide a quantitative assessment tool for potential dermal exposure. When used in conjunction with a thorough occupational hygiene program that includes hazard communication, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment, skin exposure and consequent sensitization risks in the workplace can be minimized.

Review
Advancements in astronomical telescopes and cutting-edge technologies, including deep ultraviolet (DUV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, have escalated demands and imposed stringent surface quality requirements on optical system components. Achieving near-ideal optical components requires ultra-smooth surfaces with sub-nanometer roughness, no sub-surface damage, minimal surface defects, low residual stresses, and intact lattice integrity. This necessity has driven the rapid development and diversification of ultra-smooth surface fabrication technologies. This paper summarizes recent advances in ultra-smooth surface processing technologies, categorized by their material removal mechanisms. A subsequent comparative analysis evaluates the roughness and polishing characteristics of ultra-smooth surfaces processed on various materials, including fused silica, monocrystalline silicon, silicon carbide, and sapphire. To maximize each process's advantages and achieve higher-quality surfaces, the paper discusses tailored processing methods and iterations for different materials. Finally, the paper anticipates future development trends in response to current challenges in ultra-smooth surface processing technology, providing a systematic reference for the study of the production of large-sized freeform surfaces.

Marine biofouling is a worldwide problem in marine systems. Nowadays, innovative non-toxic antifouling and fouling-release materials are highly desirable. In this study, a strategy for preparing antifouling and fouling-release materials via one-step dip coating is reported. Copolymers were synthesized via the polymerization of a monomer with catechol sticky functional groups and four monomers with antifouling- or fouling-release functional groups, respectively. The copolymers could assemble onto different material surfaces, such as metals and plastics, using biomimetic catechol groups via multivalent complex bonding. The catechol groups were helpful for adhesion onto the surfaces, while the other functional groups endowed the coatings with antifouling or fouling-release properties. The effects of modifying the substrates using these copolymer coatings were verified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; images of cell and zoospore settlement were taken using a microscope and scanning electron microscope. The copolymer-coated surfaces, especially the surface modified by DOPA-PSPMA, displayed the best antifouling activity, and surface modification via DOPA-PTMETH was shown to be the most effective for producing the fouling-release property in the settlement assay.

Color morphing refers to color change in response to an environmental stimulus. Photochromic materials allow color morphing in response to light, but almost all photochromic materials suffer from degradation when exposed to moist/humid environments or harsh chemical environments. One way of overcoming this challenge is by imparting chemical shielding to the color morphing materials via superomniphobicity. However, simultaneously imparting color morphing and superomniphobicity, both surface properties, requires a rational design. In this work, we systematically design color morphing surfaces with superomniphobicity through an appropriate combination of a photochromic dye, a low surface energy material, and a polymer in a suitable solvent (for one-pot synthesis), applied through spray coating (for the desired texture). We also investigate the influence of polymer polarity and material composition on color morphing kinetics and superomniphobicity. Our color morphing surfaces with effective chemical shielding can be designed with a wide variety of photochromic and thermochromic pigments and applied on a wide variety of substrates. We envision that such surfaces will have a wide range of applications including camouflage soldier fabrics/apparel for chem-bio warfare, color morphing soft robots, rewritable color patterns, optical data storage, and ophthalmic sun screening.

The present study evaluated the influence of carvacrol, terpinene-4-ol, and chlorhexidine on the physical-chemical properties of titanium surfaces, cell viability, proliferation, adhesion, and spreading of fibroblasts and osteoblasts in vitro. Titanium surfaces (Ti) were treated with Carvacrol (Cvc), Terpinen-4-ol (T4ol), Chlorhexidine (CHX), DMSO, and ultrapure water (Control group). Physical-chemical modifications were evaluated by surface wettability, the surface free energy (SFE) calculated from the contact angle values using the Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaeble (OWRK) equation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry probe (EDS) system. Cells were seeded onto Ti-treated surfaces and incubated for 24 h and 72 h, then evaluated by Alamar blue assay and fluorescence microscopy. Surfaces treated with Cvc and T4ol showed the presence of Na, O, and Cl. All surfaces showed hydrophilic characteristics and SFE values between 5.5 mN/m and 3.4 mN/m. On the other hand, EDS peaks demonstrated the presence of O and Cl after CHX treatment. A reduction of cell viability and adhesion was noted on titanium surfaces treated with CHX after 24 and 72h. In conclusion, the results indicate that the decontamination with Cvc and T4ol on Ti surfaces does not alter the surface proprieties and allows an adequate interaction with cells involved in the re-osseointegration process such as fibroblasts and osteoblasts.

The micro- and nanostructures, chemical composition, and wettability of titanium surfaces are essential for dental implants' osseointegration. Combining hydrophilicity and nanostructure has been shown to improve the cell response and to shorten the healing time. This study aimed to investigate the biological response to different wettability levels and nanotopographical modifications in aged and non-aged titanium surfaces. By plasma etching titanium surfaces with the fluorine gas 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (R1234yF), additional nanostructures were created on the sample surfaces. Furthermore, this treatment resulted in sustained superhydrophilicity and fluoride accumulation. We examined the effect of various nanostructuring processes and aging using scanning electron microscopy, roughness analyses, and wettability measurement. In addition, all the surface modifications were tested for their effects on fibroblast adhesion, proliferation, and viability as well as osteoblast differentiation. Our study indicates that the plasma etching, with 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene, of the machined and SLA surface neither favored nor had an adverse effect on the biological response of the SAOS-2 osteoblast cell line. Although the fluorine-plasma-etched surfaces demonstrated improved fibroblast cell viability, they did not lead to improved early osseointegration. It is still unclear which surface properties mainly influence fibroblast and osteoblast adhesion. Further physiochemical aspects, such as electrostatic interaction and surface tension, are crucial to be analyzed along with wettability and roughness.

The binding of conidia to surfaces is a prerequisite for biofouling by fungal species. In this study, subtypes 1957 and 1988 were used which produced differently shaped conidia (round or spikey respectively). Test surfaces were characterised for their surface topography, wettability, and hardness. Conidial assays included perpendicular and lateral force measurements, as well as attachment, adhesion and retention assays. Anionic surfaces were less rough ( 2.4 nm), less wettable (54°) and harder (0.72 GPa) than cationic surfaces ( 5.4 nm, 36° and 0.5 GPa, respectively). Perpendicular and lateral force assays demonstrated that both types of conidia adhered with more force to the anionic surfaces and were influenced by surface wettability. Following the binding assays, fewer 1957 and 1988 conidia bound to the anionic surface. However, surface wettability affected the density and dispersion of the conidia on the coatings, whilst clustering was affected by their spore shapes. This work demonstrated that anionic surfaces were more repulsive to 1998 spores than cationic surfaces were, but once attached, the conidia bound more firmly to the anionic surfaces. This work informs on the importance of understanding how conidia become tightly bound to surfaces, which can be used to prevent biofouling.

Proper localization of receptors for synaptic organizing factors is crucial for synapse formation. Wnt proteins promote synapse assembly through Frizzled (Fz) receptors. In hippocampal neurons, the surface and synaptic localization of Fz5 is regulated by neuronal activity, but the mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Here, we report that all Fz receptors can be post-translationally modified by S-acylation and that Fz5 is S-acylated on three C-terminal cysteines by zDHHC5. S-acylation is essential for Fz5 localization to the cell surface, axons, and presynaptic sites. Notably, S-acylation-deficient Fz5 is internalized faster, affecting its association with signalosome components at the cell surface. S-acylation-deficient Fz5 also fails to activate canonical and divergent canonical Wnt pathways. Fz5 S-acylation levels are regulated by the pattern of neuronal activity. In vivo studies demonstrate that S-acylation-deficient Fz5 expression fails to induce presynaptic assembly. Our studies show that S-acylation of Frizzled receptors is a mechanism controlling their localization and function.

Fused silica glass is widely used in optical systems, including astronomical telescopes, laser systems, optical communications, and the semiconductor industry. At the same time, the surface quality of the fused silica directly determines the performance and precision of the system. In order to analyze the microscopic surface interaction based on the basis of tribology, a roughness contact model of pitch and fused silica glass surfaces was established. Analyze the performance parameters of contact materials, surface roughness, and the relationship between load and contact area. Pitch materials with a higher plasticity index have a larger elastoplastic contact area with the fused silica surface during the polishing process. The experimental results demonstrate that the surface quality of the polished fused silica improves as the plasticity index of the pitch material increases. At the same time, judging from the PSD curve results, the polished surface of the No. 55 pitch on the spatial-frequency band curve (10-10/mm) is significantly lower than the other two brands of pitch. Additionally, the Ra value of the workpiece surface roughness reaches 0.091 nm. The results of this study provide important theoretical guidance for achieving full-diameter, full-frequency ultra-smooth polishing of large-diameter complex curved surfaces.
