Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is a high impact morbidity in head-and-neck cancer (HNC) patients. A wide variety of instruments are developed to screen for affective symptoms and OD. The current paper aims to systematically review and appraise the literature to obtain insight into the prevalence, strength, and causal direction of the relationship between affective symptoms and OD in HNC patients. This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement. A systematic search of the literature was performed using PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane, and Embase. All available publications reporting on the relationship between affective conditions and swallowing function in HNC patients were included. Conference papers, tutorials, reviews, and studies with less than 5 patients were excluded. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The level of evidence and methodological quality were assessed using the ABC-rating scale and QualSyst critical appraisal tool. Eleven studies reported a positive relationship between affective symptoms and OD. The findings of this paper highlight the importance of affective symptom screening in dysphagic HNC patients as clinically relevant affective symptoms and OD seems to be prevalent and coincident in this population. Considering the impact of affective symptoms and OD on patients' daily life, early detection and an integrated interdisciplinary approach are recommended. However, due to the heterogeneity of study designs, outcomes, and outcome measures, the generalization of study results is limited.

BACKGROUND/SCOPE
Stroke is one of the main causes of death, especially when associated with dysphagia. Hence, the assessment of nutritional status and aspiration risk is important to improve clinical outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to identify which are the most suitable dysphagia screening tools in chronic post-stroke patients.
METHODOLOGY
A systematic literature search was conducted for articles published from 1 January 2000 to 30 November 2022 in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science databases, including primary studies providing quantitative or qualitative data. Additionally, a manual search was conducted scanning the reference lists of relevant articles and Google Scholar was searched to retrieve additional records. The process of screening, selection and inclusion of the articles, as well as the assessment of risk of bias and methodological quality, were conducted by two reviewers.
RESULTS
Out of the 3672 records identified, we included 10 studies, mostly (n=9) cross-sectional, evaluating screening for dysphagia in 1653 chronic post-stroke patients. Volume-Viscosity Swallow Test was the only test applied in multiple studies with adequate sample size, demonstrating high diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity=96.6%-88.2%; specificity=83.3%-71.4%) compared with the videofluoroscopic swallowing study.
CONCLUSIONS
Dysphagia is an important complication in chronic post-stroke patients. Early identification of this condition through screening tools with adequate diagnostic accuracy is of paramount importance. The limited number of studies available and their small sample sizes may be a limitation to this study.

BACKGROUND
Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by distinctive skin rash, muscle inflammation with symmetrical and progressive muscle weakness, and elevated serum levels of muscle-associated enzymes. DM may affect skeletal muscles involved in swallowing, leading to dysphagia, which can negatively impact individual's physical and psychosocial well-being. Despite this, dysphagia in patients with DM remains poorly understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical features of dysphagia in patients with DM and juvenile DM (JDM).
METHODS
Four electronic databases were systematically searched until September 2022. Studies with patients with DM or JDM and dysphagia were included. The pooled prevalence of all included studies was calculated, and the clinical characteristics of dysphagia were qualitatively analyzed.
KEY RESULTS
Thirty-nine studies with 3335 patients were included. The overall pooled prevalence of dysphagia was 32.3% (95% CI: 0.270, 0.373) in patients with DM and 37.7% (95% CI: -0.031, 0.785) in patients with JDM. Subgroup analyses revealed that Sweden had the highest prevalence (66.7% [95% CI: 0.289, 1.044]), whereas Tunisia had the lowest prevalence (14.3% [95% CI: -0.040, 0.326]). Moreover, South America had the highest prevalence (47.0% [95% CI: 0.401, 0.538]), whereas Africa had the lowest prevalence (14.3% [95% CI: -0.040, 0.326]). Dysphagia in patients with DM and JDM was characterized by both oropharyngeal and esophageal dysfunctions, with predominant difficulties in motility.
CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES
Our findings showed that dysphagia affects one in three patients with DM or JDM. However, the documentation on the diagnosis and management of dysphagia in the literature is inadequate. Our results highlighted the need to use both clinical and instrumental assessments to evaluate swallowing function in this population.

Dysphagia is described as a highly relevant comorbidity of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there is a scarcity of studies aiming at the characteristics and progression of dysphagia.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this study was to identify the specific characteristics, progression, and prevalence of dysphagia in AD.
METHODS
Publications were searched in the PubMed (MEDLINE), EBSCO, ScienceDirect, and BASE databases. Critical appraisal and evidence-level analysis were conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute and Effective Public Health Practice Project's (EPHPP) tools.
RESULTS
A total of 26 studies were reviewed. Symptoms begin in the early stage of AD, as oral phase impairments, and progress to pharyngeal symptoms and swallowing apraxia in the later stages of AD. Dysphagia progresses, as AD, along a , with severity depending on individual variability. There were no studies found on prevalence.
CONCLUSIONS
Dysphagia is a complex and important comorbidity in AD that impacts the quality of life. No recent publications on prevalence may imply that is not being coded as a potential cause for pneumonia deaths in AD.

OBJECTIVE
Comprehensively analyze tumor control and treatment complications for jugular paraganglioma patients undergoing surgery versus stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).
DATABASES REVIEWED
EMBASE, Medline, and Scopus.
METHODS
The databases were searched for English and Spanish articles from January 1, 1995, to January, 1, 2019, for studies reporting tumor control and treatment side effects regarding patients with jugular paraganglioma treated with surgery or SRS. Main outcome measures included short-term and long-term tumor recurrence, as well as postintervention complications.
RESULTS
We identified 10,952 original abstracts, 705 eligible studies, and 107 studies for final data extraction. There were 3,498 patients-2,215 surgical patients and 1,283 SRS patients. Bayesian meta-analysis was applied to the extracted data, with tau measurements for study heterogeneity. SRS tumors were larger (3.9 cm 3 versus 8.1 cm 3 ). Meta-analysis results demonstrated low rates of long-term recurrence for both modalities (surgery, 15%; SRS, 7%), with SRS demonstrating lower rates of postintervention cerebrospinal fluid leak, dysphagia, and cranial nerve Vll, lX, X, Xl, or Xll palsies.
CONCLUSIONS
This study demonstrates excellent control of jugular paragangiomas with both surgery and SRS, with higher rates of lower cranial neuropathies, dysphagia, and cerebrospinal fluid leaks among surgical patients.

BACKGROUND
Tooth wear (TW) prevalence is high and increasing and has important consequences on the patient's quality of life. Knowledge of risk factors is crucial to promote diagnosis, prevention strategies and timely interceptive treatment. Many studies have identified TW risk factors.
OBJECTIVE
This scoping review aims to map and describe suspected available factors associated with TW in permanent dentition based on quantitative measurement.
METHODS
The scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA extension of the Scoping Reviews checklist. The search was conducted in October 2022 from the Medline® (PubMed® interface) and Scopus® databases. Two independent reviewers selected and characterised the studies.
RESULTS
2702 articles were identified for assessment of titles and abstracts, and 273 articles were included in the review. The results show a need to standardise TW measurement indices and the study design. The included studies highlighted various factors, classified into nine domains: sociodemographic factors, medical history, drinking habits, eating habits, oral hygiene habits, dental factors, bruxism and temporomandibular disorders, behavioural factors, and stress. Results related to chemical TW (erosion) risk factors underline the importance of eating disorders, gastroesophageal reflux and lifestyle, particularly drinking and eating behaviours, which supports developing public health information campaigns and interventions. Besides chemical, this review identifies evidence of several mechanical TW risk factors, such as toothbrushing and bruxism; the influence of this last factor needs to be further explored.
CONCLUSIONS
TW management and prevention require a multidisciplinary approach. Dentists are in the first line to detect associated diseases such as reflux or eating disorders. Consequently, practitioners' information and guideline diffusion should be promoted, and a TW risk factors checklist (the ToWeR checklist) is proposed to help diagnostic approaches.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a condition characterized by swallowing difficulty in the mouth and pharynx, which can be due to various factors. Animal models of oropharyngeal dysphagia are essential to confirm the cause-specific symptoms, pathological findings, and the effect of treatment. Recently, various animal models of dysphagia have been reported. The purpose of this review is to organize the rodent models of oropharyngeal dysphagia reported to date. The articles were obtained from Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane library, and selected following the PRISMA guideline. The animal models in which oropharyngeal dysphagia was induced in rats or mice were selected and classified based on the diseases causing oropharyngeal dysphagia. The animal used, method of inducing dysphagia, and screening methods and results were collected from the selected 37 articles. Various rodent models of oropharyngeal dysphagia provide distinctive information on atypical swallowing. Applying and analyzing the treatment in rodent models of dysphagia induced from various causes is an essential process to develop symptom-specific treatments. Therefore, the results of this study provide fundamental and important data for selecting appropriate animal models to study dysphagia.

Increasingly, non-pharmacological interventions are being identified and applied to post-stroke dysphagia. Nevertheless, there is insufficient evidence to assess which type of interventions are more effective. In this study, the randomized controlled trials of non-pharmacological interventions on post-stroke dysphagia were retrieved from the relevant databases. Including 96 studies and 12 non-drug treatments. Then, and the network meta-analysis is carried out by statistical software. The results show: In the aspects of videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS), Standardized Swallowing Assessment (SSA), swallowing-quality of life (SWAL-QOL), Water swallow test (WST); Acupuncture + electrotherapy + rehabilitation training, acupuncture + rehabilitation training + massage, electrotherapy + rehabilitation training, acupuncture + electrotherapy + rehabilitation training, electrotherapy, acupuncture + rehabilitation training + acupoints sticking application have significant effects in post-stroke dysphagia. Compared with other interventions, they have more advantages in improving the above indicators. A substantial number of high-quality randomized clinical trials are still necessary in the prospective to validate the therapeutic effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in post-stroke dysphagia and the results of this Bayesian network meta-analysis.

PURPOSE
Brachytherapy is most often applied in the curative or salvage setting, but many forms of brachytherapy can be helpful for symptom palliation. Declining utilization is seen, for multiple reasons, such as lack of awareness, insufficient expertise, or poor access to equipment. High level evidence for many types of palliative brachytherapy has been lacking. The objective of the current study was to review the evidence for utilization and efficacy of brachytherapy to palliate symptoms from cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We performed a systematic search in EMBASE and MEDLINE for English-language articles published from January 1980 to May 2022 that described brachytherapy used for a palliative indication in adults with a diagnosis of cancer (any subtype) and at least one symptom related outcome. Individual case reports and conference abstracts were excluded. All publications were independently screened by two investigators for eligibility.
RESULTS
The initial search identified 3637 abstracts of which 129 were selected for in-depth review. The number of studies (total number of patients) included in the final analysis varied widely by tumor site with the majority (68.2%) involving either lung or esophageal cancer. Despite a limited number of prospective trials that assessed the efficacy of brachytherapy for symptom management, there was a positive effect on palliation of symptoms across all tumor types. There was no clear trend in the number of publications over time. The most commonly cited symptom indications for palliation by brachytherapy were dysphagia, dyspnea, pain and bleeding.
CONCLUSIONS
Brachytherapy can provide palliation for patients with advanced cancer, across different tumor sites and clinical scenarios. However, high level evidence in the literature to support palliative applications of brachytherapy is lacking or limited for many tumor sites. There appears to be a strong publication bias towards positive studies in favor of brachytherapy. Beyond anecdotal reports and individual practices, outcomes research can further our understanding of the role of brachytherapy in palliating advanced cancers of all types, and should be encouraged.

BACKGROUND
The majority of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) develop oropharyngeal dysphagia during the course of their disease. However, the efficacy of dysphagia treatments for these patients remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate treatment efficacy based on the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
METHODS
Five electronic databases were systematically searched from inception date to April 2022. Two reviewers independently extracted and analyzed the data. The outcome measures were changes in swallowing-related characteristics based on instrumental swallowing assessments.
KEY RESULTS
An initial search identified 187 RCT studies of relevance. After screening, nine studies with a total sample size of 286 were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled effect size for all dysphagia treatments compared with control comparators was significant and medium (SMD [95% CI] = 0.58 [0.22, 0.94], p = 0.001; I = 50%). Subgroup analysis revealed a significant and medium pooled effect size for stimulation treatments (brain stimulation, peripheral neurostimulation and acupuncture) (SMD [95% CI] = 0.54 [0.15, 0.92]; p = 0.006; I = 22%). Specifically, the effect sizes for the single RCTs on neuromuscular stimulation (SMD [95% CI] = 1.58 [0.49, 2.86]; p = 0.005) and acupuncture (SMD [95% CI] = 0.82 [0.27, 1.37]; p = 0.003) were significant and large.
CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES
Our results showed that overall, dysphagia treatments, particularly stimulation treatments, can potentially benefit PD patients. However, given the limited number of small RCTs for each type of treatment, the evidence remains weak and uncertain. Further large-scale, multicenter RCTs are warranted to fully explore their clinical efficacy in the PD population.
