PURPOSE
To investigate the literature for frequencies, profiles and neural correlates of limb and face apraxias in frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
METHOD
The search conducted in Ovid Medline, PsycINFO and Scopus yielded 487 non-duplicate records, and 43 were included in the final analysis.
RESULTS
Apraxias are evident in diverse forms in all clinical variants of FTD within the first four years of the disease. Face apraxia and productive limb apraxia co-occur in the behavioural and nonfluent variants. The logopenic variant resembles Alzheimer's disease in terms of pronounced parietal limb apraxia and absence of face apraxia. The semantic variant exhibits conceptual praxis deficits together with relatively preserved imitation skills. Concerning the genetic variants of FTD, productive limb apraxia is common among carriers of the progranulin gene mutation, and subtle gestural alterations have been documented among carriers of the chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 gene mutation before the expected disease onset. The data on neural correlations suggest that the breakdown of praxis results from bilateral cortical and subcortical damage in FTD and that Alzheimer-type pathology of the cerebrospinal fluid increases the severity of limb apraxia in all of the variants. Face apraxia correlates with degeneration of the medial and superior frontal cortices.
CONCLUSIONS
Each of the clinical variants of FTD exhibits a characteristic profile of apraxias that may support early differentiation between the variants and from Alzheimer's disease. However, the screening procedures developed for stroke populations seem insufficient, and a multifaceted assessment tool is needed. Although valid and practical tests already exist for dementia populations, a concise selection of test items that covers all of the critical domains is called for.

A systematic review and narrative synthesis of the research provisions under the Mental Capacity Act (2005) in England and Wales: Recruitment of adults with capacity and communication difficulties.
BACKGROUND
The Mental Capacity Act (MCA, 2005) and its accompanying Code of Practice (2007), govern research participation for adults with capacity and communication difficulties in England and Wales. We conducted a systematic review and narrative synthesis to investigate the application of these provisions from 2007 to 2019.
METHODS AND FINDINGS
We included studies with mental capacity in their criteria, involving participants aged 16 years and above, with capacity-affecting conditions and conducted in England and Wales after the implementation of the MCA. Clinical trials of medicines were excluded. We searched seven databases: Academic Search Complete, ASSIA, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycArticles, PsycINFO and Science Direct. We used narrative synthesis to report our results. Our review follows Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and is registered on PROSPERO, CRD42020195652. 28 studies of various research designs met our eligibility criteria: 14 (50.0%) were quantitative, 12 (42.9%) qualitative and 2 (7.1%) mixed methods. Included participants were adults with intellectual disabilities (n = 12), dementia (n = 9), mental health disorders (n = 2), autism (n = 3) and aphasia after stroke (n = 2). We found no studies involving adults with acquired brain injury. Diverse strategies were used in the recruitment of adults with capacity and communication difficulties with seven studies excluding individuals deemed to lack capacity.
CONCLUSIONS
We found relatively few studies including adults with capacity and communication difficulties with existing regulations interpreted variably. Limited use of consultees and exclusions on the basis of capacity and communication difficulties indicate that this group continue to be under-represented in research. If health and social interventions are to be effective for this population, they need to be included in primary research. The use of strategic adaptations and accommodations during the recruitment process, may serve to support their inclusion.

INTRODUCTION
Autoimmune neurological diseases (ANDs) are a specific type of autoimmune disease that affect cells within the central and peripheral nervous system. ANDs trigger various physical/neuropsychiatric symptoms. However, language impairments in people with ANDs are not well characterized. Here we aimed to determine the kinds of language impairment that most commonly emerge in 10 ANDs, the characteristics of the patients (demographic, neurological damage), and the assessment methods used.
METHODS
We followed the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). PubMed and Google Scholar were searched. We used a list of search terms containing 10 types of ANDs (e.g., multiple sclerosis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis) in combination with the terms aphasia, dysphasia, fluency, language, listening, morphology, phonology, pragmatics, reading, semantics, speaking, syntax, writing. The reference lists and citations of the relevant papers were also investigated. The type of AND, patient characteristics, neurological damage and examination technique, language tests administered, and main findings were noted for each study meeting the inclusion criteria.
RESULTS
We found 171 studies meeting our inclusion criteria. These comprised group studies and case studies. Language impairments differed largely among types of ANDs. Neurological findings were mentioned in most of the papers, but specific language tests were rarely used.
CONCLUSIONS
Language symptoms in people with ANDs are commonly reported. These are often not full descriptions or only focus on specific time points in the course of the disease. Future research needs to assess specific language functions in people with ANDs and relate their language impairments to brain damage at different stages of disease evolution.

Thorough Comparative Analysis of Stand-Alone Cage and Anterior Cervical Plate for Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion in the Treatment of Cervical Degenerative Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aim to thoroughly describe and objectively compare the efficacy of anterior cervical plate (ACP) and stand-alone cage (SAC). Although recognized as an effective procedure for cervical degenerative disease (CDD), a debate between the methods of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion exists. ACP provides stability to the fusion construct; however, some complications have been reported, such as dysphagia, adjacent disc disease, and soft tissue injury. To overcome these complications, a SAC was later introduced. A systematic search was conducted on the basis of PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses) guidelines to identify relevant studies through PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane database. A total of 14 studies (960 patients) were included in the meta-analysis. Twenty outcomes were clinically and radiologically compared between the two procedures. ACP and SAC were comparable in terms of dysphasia rate, loss of segmental angle, loss of disc height, the Odom criteria, Robinson's criteria, hospital stay, Japanese Orthopaedic Association score, Neck Disability Index, Visual Analog Scale, and fusion time. However, SAC was superior in terms of shorter operation time, less blood loss, lower dysphagia rate, and lower rate of adjacent level disease, whereas ACP was advantageous in terms of lower subsidence rate, better maintenance of the cervical global and segmental angles and disc height, and higher fusion rate. Both procedures can be used in patients with CDD, although it might be more beneficial to choose ACP in patients with multi-level pathologies, wherein better mechanical stability is provided. However, SAC may be more beneficial to use in patients with comorbidities, anemia, or swelling problems because it offers lower complication rates.

While converging evidence suggests linguistic roles of white matter tracts, detailed associations between white matter alterations of dual pathways and language abilities remain unknown in aphasic patients. We aimed to verify language functions of dual-pathway tracts from specific domains and investigate the influence of moderators. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and CENTRAL were searched for studies published between January 1, 1985 and March 17, 2019. A meta-analysis of 46 studies including 1353 aphasic patients was performed by pooling correlation coefficients between linguistic domains and diffusion metrics of dual-pathway tracts. Among these tracts, the fractional anisotropy (FA) value of the left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus predominated across most linguistic aspects, showing the strongest correlations with global severity, comprehension, naming and reading ability. The left uncinate fasciculus and inferior longitudinal fasciculus also showed significant FA - comprehension correlations. For syntactic processing, FA values of the left superior longitudinal fasciculus and arcuate fasciculus showed significant positive correlations. Meta-regression revealed no influence of etiology on FA - language correlations, while sex had a moderating effect on the FA - comprehension correlation of the arcuate fasciculus, and age influenced the FA - naming correlation in the superior longitudinal fasciculus. In conclusion, multifunctional characteristics of tracts were revealed in aphasic patients, including broad linguistic associations of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, and repetition and syntactic involvement of the arcuate fasciculus. Language associations of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus and uncinate fasciculus were clarified regarding comprehension subdomains. The insignificant moderating effect of the etiology indicates damage of dual pathways is the common neural mechanism, while sex and age influence the correlation with comprehension and naming ability, respectively, in specific tracts.

PURPOSE
Conversation-focused speech-language pathology services are a top priority for people living with aphasia, but little is known about how researchers measure conversation as an outcome of treatment. This scoping review was undertaken to systematically review the evidence regarding the measurement of conversation in aphasia studies and to identify current practices and existing gaps.
METHOD
A systematic literature search was conducted for studies published between January 1995 and September 2019 in multiple electronic databases. Covidence software was used to manage search results, study selection, and data charting processes. Data were extracted from each study and then collated and organized to elucidate the breadth of approaches, tools, or procedures oriented to measuring conversation as an outcome and identify gaps in the existing literature.
RESULTS
The systematic search of the literature resulted in 1,244 studies. A total of 64 studies met inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The review summarizes the various tools and procedures used to measure conversation as an outcome of aphasia intervention, including variations in data collection and analysis procedures. The review also evaluates the quality of conversation measures in terms of psychometric properties and informal measures of validity. There was a total of 211 measures used across the 64 studies.
CONCLUSIONS
While there was no clear measure that was objectively superior, several measures show promise and warrant future exploration. Some of the orientations, conceptualizations, and procedures we have presented can be seen as options that might be included in a future conversation-focused core outcome set.

Background Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) record two main types of data: continuous measurements at rest or during sleep, and event-related potentials/evoked magnetic fields (ERPs/EMFs) that involve specific and repetitive tasks. In this systematic review, we summarized longitudinal studies on recovery from post-stroke aphasia that used continuous or event-related temporal imaging (EEG or MEG). Methods We searched PubMed and Scopus for English articles published from 1950 to May 31, 2022. Results 34 studies were included in this review: 11 were non-interventional studies and 23 were clinical trials that used specific rehabilitation methods, neuromodulation, or drugs. The results of the non-interventional studies suggested that poor language recovery was associated with slow-wave activity persisting over time. The results of some clinical trials indicated that behavioral improvements were correlated with significant modulation of the N400 component. Discussion Compared with continuous EEG, ERP/EMF may more reliably identify biomarkers of therapy-induced effects. Electrophysiology should be used more often to explore language processes that are impaired after a stroke, as it may highlight treatment challenges for patients with post-stroke aphasia.

The linguistic and anatomical variability of the logopenic variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (lv-PPA) as defined by current diagnostic criteria has been the topic of an intense debate. The present review and meta-analysis aims at characterizing the profile of lv-PPA, by a comprehensive analysis of the available literature on the neuropsychological, neuroimaging, electrophysiological, pathological, and genetic features of lv-PPA. We conducted a systematic bibliographic search, leading to the inclusion of 207 papers. Of them, 12 were used for the Anatomical Likelihood Estimation meta-analysis on grey matter revealed by magnetic resonance imaging data. The results suggest that the current guidelines outline a relatively consistent syndrome, characterized by a core set of linguistic and, to a lesser extent, non-linguistic deficits, mirroring the involvement of left temporal and parietal regions typically affected by Alzheimer Disease pathology. Variations of the lv-PPA profile are discussed in terms of heterogeneity of the neuropsychological instruments and the diagnostic criteria adopted.

OBJECTIVE
To determine the aims, participants, and outcomes of training communication partners of Chinese-speaking persons with aphasia (PWA).
DATA SOURCES
Sixty search terms related to communication partner training (CPT) in Chinese characters were searched in 8 electronic databases (published 1991-2020).
STUDY SELECTION
Journal articles written in Chinese that primarily target the Chinese audience and university theses were selected for review. Studies involving CPT and training to enable communication partner to deliver language tasks were included, but reports without PWA or direct training of communication partners were excluded. A final corpus of 37 articles, representing publications of group studies, case studies, qualitative studies, and opinion articles, were selected for full review.
DATA EXTRACTION
For all articles, 2 reviewers independently reviewed abstracts, excluding those without PWA or those that did not involve training of communication partners. One reviewer extracted descriptive data of participants with aphasia, communication partners, intervention details of the intervention (purpose, amount, setting, description), outcome measures, results, and clinical guidelines. A second reviewer performed accuracy verifications.
DATA SYNTHESIS
Quality of reviewed articles were classified using the American Academy of Neurology levels of evidence. The current review suggested an evidence base of low to medium quality supporting 2 intervention groups: (1) training partners to deliver therapy tasks and (2) training to improve communication between PWA and their communication partners. There was a higher proportion of persons with acute and subacute aphasia involved in these investigations, suggesting evidence on treatment efficacy of CPT in the acute stage.
CONCLUSIONS
Additional high-quality research with a better methodological quality, for example, randomized controlled trials or experimental design, are required to strengthen the current evidence of CPT. This systematic review suggests that the inclusion of studies published in languages other than English may influence the findings of mainstream reviews relating to aphasia.

The emergence of new artistic activities or shifts in artistic style in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) syndromes is well documented at or after disease onset. However, a closer look in the literature reveals emerging artistic creativity also before FTD onset, although the significance and underlying pathology of such creative endeavors remain elusive. Here, we systematically review relevant studies and report an additional FTD case to elaborate on artistic activities that developed years before disease manifestation by paying particular attention to the sequence of events in individual patients' biography and clinical history. We further discuss the FTD patient's creative activities in the context of their life events, other initial or "premorbid" dementia symptoms or risk factors described in the literature such as mental illness and mild behavioral impairment (MBI), as well as changes in neuronal systems (i.e., neuroimaging and neuropathology). In addition to our FTD patient, we identified five published cases with an FTD syndrome, including three with FTD, one with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and one with the behavioral variant of PPA (bvPPA). Premorbid novel creativity emerged across different domains (visual, musical, writing), with the FTD diagnosis ensuing artistic productivity by a median of 8 years. Data on late-life and pre-dementia life events were available in four cases. The late creative phase in our case was accompanied by personality changes, accentuation of personality traits, and cessation of painting activities occurred with the onset of memory complaints. Thus, premorbid personality changes in FTD patients can be associated with de novo creative activity. Stressful life events may also contribute to the burgeoning of creativity. Moreover, primary neocortical areas that are largely spared by pathology at early FTD stages may facilitate the engagement in artistic activities, offering a window of opportunity for art therapy and other therapeutic interventions during the MBI stage or even earlier.
