BACKGROUND
In recent years, the pleiotropic roles of antioxidants have drawn extensive attention in various diseases. Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant, and it has been used to treat patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to demonstrate the impact of vitamin C supplementation in patients with COPD.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), SinoMed, Wanfang, and China Science and Technology Journal Database (cqvip.com) for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from their respective inception to May 18, 2021, by using the searching terms of COPD, vitamin C, and RCTs. A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of vitamin C on lung function, antioxidant levels, and nutritional conditions in COPD patients by using Review Manager (Version 5.4).
RESULTS
Ten RCTs including 487 participants were eligible for our study. Meta-analysis results showed that vitamin C supplementation (≥400 mg/day) can significantly improve the forced expiratory volume in one second as a percentage (FEV1%) in COPD (SMD:1.08, 95% CI:0.03, 2.12, =0.04). Moreover, vitamin C supplementation significantly improved the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second and forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) (WMD:0.66, 95% CI: 0.26, 1.06, =0.001), vitamin C level in serum (SMD:0.63, 95% CI: 0.02, 1.24, =0.04) and glutathione (GSH) level in serum (SMD:2.47, 95% CI: 1.06, 3.89, =0.0006). While no statistically significant difference was observed in body mass index (BMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI), vitamin E level and superoxide dismutase (SOD) level in serum.
CONCLUSION
Vitamin C supplementation could increase the levels of antioxidation in serum (vitamin C and GSH) and improve lung function (FEV1% and FEV1/FVC), especially in patients treated with vitamin C supplementation greater than 400 mg/day. However, further prospective studies are needed to explore the role of vitamin C in improving nutritional status.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin/turmeric supplementation in adults: A GRADE-assessed systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Turmeric and its prominent bioactive compound, curcumin, have been the subject of many investigations with regard to their impact on inflammatory and oxidative balance in the body. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we summarized the existing literature on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which examined this hypothesis. Major databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar) were searched from inception up to October 2022. Relevant studies meeting our eligibility criteria were obtained. Main outcomes included inflammatory markers (i.e. C-reactive protein(CRP), tumour necrosis factorα(TNF-α), interleukin-6(IL-6), and interleukin 1 beta(IL-1β)) and markers of oxidative stress (i.e. total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde(MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity). Weighted mean differences (WMDs) were reported. P-values < 0.05 were considered significant. Sixty-six RCTs were included in the final analysis. We observed that turmeric/curcumin supplementation significantly reduces levels of inflammatory markers, including CRP (WMD: -0.58 mg/l, 95 % CI: -0.74, -0.41), TNF-α (WMD: -3.48 pg/ml, 95 % CI: -4.38, -2.58), and IL-6 (WMD: -1.31 pg/ml, 95 % CI: -1.58, -0.67); except for IL-1β (WMD: -0.46 pg/ml, 95 % CI: -1.18, 0.27) for which no significant change was found. Also, turmeric/curcumin supplementation significantly improved anti-oxidant activity through enhancing TAC (WMD = 0.21 mmol/l; 95 % CI: 0.08, 0.33), reducing MDA levels (WMD = -0.33 µmol /l; 95 % CI: -0.53, -0.12), and SOD activity (WMD = 20.51 u/l; 95 % CI: 7.35, 33.67). It seems that turmeric/curcumin supplementation might be used as a viable intervention for improving inflammatory/oxidative status of individuals.

Coptis Chinensis Franch is widely used in the treatment of diabetes, and berberine is the primary bioactive component in it. Evidence from previous studies has shown that berberine supplementation is effective for treating diabetic nephropathy (DN) in animal models. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the effects and potential mechanisms of action of berberine in animal models of DN. Relevant studies were searched from the English language databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase starting from the establishment of the database till June 2022. Twenty-five studies were included, and the risk of bias tool from SYRCLE was used to assess the methodological quality. Statistical analysis was conducted using STATA 15.1. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (SCR), and the kidney index (KI) were the primary outcomes to be analyzed. The overall results showed that berberine improves the indicators of renal function, such as BUN, SCR, proteinuria, and KI. Meanwhile, berberine also improved inflammatory indicators, such as IL-6 and TNF-α, and oxidative stress indicators, such as the superoxide dismutase activity and malondialdehyde content. Additionally, berberine lowered the levels of known risk factors, including triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL). These beneficial effects of berberine in DN may be related to its anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative stress properties. However, to assess the anti-diabetic nephropathy effects and safety of berberine in a more accurate manner, additional large-scale, long-term, and high-quality preclinical trials are needed to confirm these findings before clinical application.

INTRODUCTION
Diseases caused by protozoa are one of the leading causes of death worldwide, especially in tropical regions such as Brazil. Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, and malaria are responsible for around 234 million cases and more than 400,000 deaths worldwide. Despite this scenario, drugs for these diseases have several limitations, which justifies the search for new treatments. Iron superoxide dismutase is a promising target for the drug design to treat patients with these diseases. It is a validated target and protects against oxidative stress.
AIM
Thus, this systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence on the importance of superoxide dismutase in the drug design to treat patients with this protozoosis.
METHODS
A search was performed for in vitro and in vivo studies, without publication and language restrictions, in MEDLINE (PubMed), LILACS (BVS), Science Direct, and EMBASE (Elsevier). Studies that pointed to the relationship between the reduction or increase in superoxide dismutase activity and the diseases were included. 23 studies were selected for the qualitative synthesis.
RESULTS
The results showed that the inhibition or reduction of the enzyme activity decreases the degree of infection and reinfection and improves the results in treating these diseases. In contrast, the increase in activity caused a high degree of survival and resistance of the parasites.
CONCLUSION
However, the overall quality of evidence is low and more studies with methodological rigor are provided.

This systematic review is aimed to evaluate the effects of balneotherapy with thermal mineral water for managing the symptoms and signs of osteoarthritis located at any anatomical site. The systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA Statement. The following databases were consulted: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, DOAJ and PEDro. We included clinical trials evaluating the effects of balneotherapy as a treatment for patients with osteoarthritis, published in English and Italian language, led on human subjects. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO. Overall, 17 studies have been included in the review. All of these studies were performed on adults or elderly patients suffering from osteoarthritis localized to knees, hips, hands or lumbar spine. The treatment assessed was always the balneotherapy with thermal mineral water. The outcomes evaluated were pain, palpation/pressure sensibility, articular tenderness, functional ability, quality of life, mobility, deambulation, ability to climb stairs, medical objective and patients' subjective evaluation, superoxide dismutase enzyme activity, serum levels of interleukin-2 receptors. The results of all the included studies agree and demonstrated an improvement of all the symptoms and signs investigated. In particular, pain and quality of life were the main symptoms evaluated and both improved after the treatment with thermal water in all the studies included in the review. These effects can be attributed to physical and chemical-physical properties of thermal mineral water used. However, the quality of many studies resulted not so high due and, consequently, it is necessary to perform new clinical trial in this field using more correct methods for conducting the study and for processing statistical data.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is characterized by a pro-oxidant state that results from the recurrent hypoxia-reoxygenation cycles. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), a key antioxidant enzyme involved in the detoxification of superoxide radicals, could represent a reliable marker to monitor the antioxidant defences in OSA. In order to capture and critically appraise the available evidence, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting SOD concentrations in OSA patients and non-OSA controls in the electronic databases Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar. In total, 13 studies in 847 OSA patients and 438 non-OSA controls were included in the meta-analysis. Blood SOD concentrations were significantly lower in OSA patients (SMD = 0.87, < 0.001). By contrast, serum/plasma SOD concentrations were not significantly different between the two groups. Although extreme between-study heterogeneity was observed, the SMD was not substantially modified when individual studies were sequentially removed. In conclusion, we observed that whole blood, but not serum/plasma, SOD concentrations were significantly lower in OSA patients compared with controls. Our meta-analysis suggests an impaired antioxidant defence in OSA that is more robustly assessed in the corpuscular biological matrix and provides useful background information for further studies investigating the association between SOD changes and clinical status in OSA.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential element acting as a co-factor of superoxide dismutase, and it is potentially beneficial for cardiometabolic health by reducing oxidative stress. Although some studies have examined the relationship between Mn and metabolic syndrome (MetS), no systematic review and meta-analysis has been presented to summarize the evidence. Therefore, the present review examined the association between dietary and environmental Mn exposure, and MetS risk. A total of nine cross-sectional studies and three case-control studies were included, which assessed Mn from diet, serum, urine, and whole blood. The association of the highest Mn level from diet (three studies, odds ratio (OR): 0.83, 95% confidence interval (C.I.) = 0.57, 1.21), serum (two studies, OR: 0.87, 95% C.I. = 0.66, 1.14), urine (two studies, OR: 0.84, 95% C.I. = 0.59, 1.19), and whole blood (two studies, OR: 0.92, 95% C.I. = 0.53, 1.60) were insignificant, but some included studies have suggested a non-linear relationship of urinary and blood Mn with MetS, and higher dietary Mn may associate with a lower MetS risk in some of the included studies. While more evidence from prospective cohorts is needed, future studies should use novel statistical approaches to evaluate relative contribution of Mn on MetS risk along with other inter-related exposures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
The literature suggests that statins may increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels by different mechanisms. These effects may contribute to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of statins, which are thought to be beneficial in preventing cardiovascular events. However, there are also conflicting results concerning the effect of statins on SOD levels. The goal of this systematic review was to evaluate the effect of statin therapy on SOD activity.
METHODS
This systematic review was performed based on the PRISMA statement. The terms ("statin" or "HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor" OR "lipid-lowering agents" OR "Atorvastatin" OR "Simvastatin" OR "Pravastatin" OR "Fluvastatin" OR "Lovastatin") AND ("superoxide dismutase" OR "SOD" OR "anti-oxidative" OR "oxidative stress") were searched in database systems Google Scholar, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus from inception to April 2022.
RESULTS
A total of 14 controlled clinical trials - 10 randomized and 4 non-randomized - were found to be eligible. Four studies measured SOD levels in plasma, six in serum, two in red blood cells, one in venous blood, and one on both red blood cells and venous blood matrices. Seven clinical trials used atorvastatin, six used simvastatin, and four used rosuvastatin. Six studies reported an increase in SOD activity, seven found no significant changes, and one showed a reduced SOD activity.
CONCLUSION
Our systematic review suggests that treatment with statins has a positive effect on SOD activity. However, evidence from further randomized controlled trials is required to confirm the potential antioxidant effect of statin therapy.

BACKGROUND
Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is a multifactorial, complex pathophysiological process in clinical settings. In recent years, intestinal IRI has received increasing attention due to increased morbidity and mortality. To date, there are no effective treatments. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a highly selective α-adrenergic receptor agonist, has been demonstrated to be effective against intestinal IRI. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the efficacy and potential mechanisms of DEX as a treatment for intestinal IRI in animal models.
METHODS
Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus) were searched until March 15, 2023. Using the SYRCLE risk bias tool, we assessed methodological quality. Statistical analysis was conducted using STATA 12 and R 4.2.2. We analyzed the related outcomes (mucosa damage-related indicators; inflammation-relevant markers, oxidative stress markers) relied on the fixed or random-effects models.
RESULTS
There were 15 articles including 18 studies included, and 309 animals were involved in the studies. Compared to the model groups, DEX improved intestinal IRI. DEX decreased Chiu's score and serum diamine oxidase (DAO) level. DEX reduced the level of inflammation-relevant markers (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α). DEX also improved oxidative stress (decreased malondialdehyde (MDA), increased superoxide dismutase (SOD)).
CONCLUSIONS
DEX's effectiveness in ameliorating intestinal IRI has been demonstrated in animal models. Antioxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-apoptotic, anti-pyroptosis, anti-ferroptosis, enhancing mitophagy, reshaping the gut microbiota, and gut barrier protection are possible mechanisms. However, in light of the heterogeneity and methodological quality of these studies, further well-designed preclinical studies are warranted before clinical implication.

The fruit of Linn., which mainly grows in tropical and subtropical regions, is well-known for its medicine and food homology properties. It has a distinctive flavor, great nutritional content, and potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and immunoregulatory effects. According to an increasing amount of scientific and clinical evidence, this fruit shows significant potential for application and development in the field of oral health management. Through the supplementation of vitamins, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and other nutrients reduce virulence expression of various oral pathogens, prevent tissue and mucosal damage caused by oxidative stress, . fruit can promote saliva secretion, regulate the balance of the oral microecology, prevent and treat oral cancer early, promote alveolar bone remodeling and aid mucosal wound healing. Thus, it plays a specific role in the prevention and treatment of common oral disorders, producing surprising results. For instance, enhancing the effectiveness of scaling and root planing in the treatment of periodontitis, relieving mucosal inflammation caused by radiotherapy for oral cancer, and regulating the blood glucose metabolism to alleviate oral discomfort. Herein, we systematically review the latest research on the use of fruit in the management of oral health and examine the challenges and future research directions based on its chemical composition and characteristics.
