Rosacea is a common chronic skin disease distributed primarily around the central face. Ocular manifestations of rosacea are poorly studied, and estimates of prevalence vary widely, ranging from 6% to 72% in the rosacea population. Treatment options for ocular rosacea include lid hygiene, topical and oral antibiotics, cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion, oral vitamin A derivatives, and intense pulsed light; however, a direct comparison of treatment methods for ocular rosacea is lacking. This review aims to compare treatment efficacy and adverse events for different treatment modalities in ocular rosacea. We performed a systematic review by searching Cochrane, MEDLINE and Embase. Title, abstract, full text screening, and data extraction were done in duplicate. Sixty-six articles met the inclusion criteria, representing a total of 1,275 patients. The most effective treatment modalities were topical antimicrobials and oral antibiotics, which achieved complete or partial response in 91% (n = 82/90) and 89% (n = 525/580) of patients respectively, followed by intense pulsed light (89%, n = 97/109 partial response), cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion (87% n = 40/46), and lid hygiene (65%, n = 67/105). Combination treatments achieved a complete or partial response in 90% (n = 69/77). Results suggest that topical antimicrobials, oral antibiotics, intense pulsed light. and cyclosporine were the most efficacious single modality treatments.

β-carotene is a powerful antioxidant and dietary precursor of vitamin A whose role in maintaining mental health and cognitive performance, either alone or in combination with other dietary compounds, has been a topic of recent research. However, its effectiveness is still unclear. This systematic review, conducted according to the PRISMA guideline and assisted by the MySLR platform, addressed this issue. A total of 16 eligible original research articles were identified. Dietary intake or β-carotene serum levels were associated with improved measures of cognitive function in 7 out of 10 epidemiological studies included. In intervention studies, β-carotene consumption alone did not promote better cognitive function in the short term, but only in a long-term intervention with a mean duration of 18 years. However, all but one intervention study suggested the beneficial effects of β-carotene supplementation at doses ranging from 6 mg to 50 mg per day in combination with a multicomplex such as vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc, or selenium for a period of 16 weeks to 20 years. Despite the current limitations, the available evidence suggests a potential association between β-carotene dietary/supplementary intake and the maintenance of cognitive function. The β-carotene most probably does not act alone but in synergy with other micronutrients.

PURPOSE
In people with epilepsy achieving optimal dietary intake may be hampered by psychological and physical comorbidities associated with seizures, medication use, socioeconomic disadvantage and the use of therapeutic diets. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the reported dietary intake and nutritional status of children and adults with epilepsy.
METHODS
A systematic literature search was completed across Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL (all from inception to 4 November 2021). We included studies that reported dietary intake in adults and children diagnosed with epilepsy compared with local reference ranges, control groups or general populations. Studies using interventions and therapeutic diets were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed using the Study Quality Assessment Tools by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. A descriptive analysis was performed due to the heterogenous nature of the data.
RESULTS
The initial search returned 1214 articles. Full-text screening was completed for 98 studies and 19 studies met eligibility criteria and were included for extraction. These comprised of seven paediatric studies, eight adult studies and four studies that included both adult and paediatric cohorts. Sample size of cases in each study ranged from 17 to 3,220. Vitamin A, C, D and folate were the most frequently reported vitamins. Calcium, iron and zinc were the most commonly reported minerals. Most studies showed that people with epilepsy had poorer dietary intake and nutritional status compared with control groups or reference standards.
CONCLUSION
There were limited studies on dietary intake and nutritional status in people with epilepsy. Most available studies suggested poorer status compared to non-epilepsy controls. The development of a validated dietary assessment tool specifically for epilepsy cohorts would enable comparison of findings across studies, and aid with appropriately tailoring nutrition advice to individuals with epilepsy.

Nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy can have serious consequences for the health of the (unborn) child. This systematic review provides an updated overview of the available food and nutrient intake data for pregnant women in The Netherlands and an evaluation based on the current recommendations. Embase, MEDLINE, and national institute databases were used. Articles were selected if they had been published since 2008 and contained data on food consumption, nutrient intake, or the status of healthy pregnant women. A qualitative comparison was made with the 2021 Dutch Health Council recommendations and reference values. A total of 218 reports were included, representing 54 individual studies. Dietary assessments were primarily performed via food frequency questionnaires. Protein, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B, folate, vitamin B, vitamin C, iron, calcium, and magnesium intakes seemed to be adequate. For folate and vitamin D, supplements were needed to reach the recommended intake. The reasons for concern are the low intakes of fruits, vegetables, and (fatty) fish, and the intakes of alcohol, sugary drinks, and salt. For several foods and nutrients, no or limited intake data were found. High-quality, representative, and recent data are needed to evaluate the nutrient intake of pregnant women in order to make accurate assessments and evaluations, supporting scientific-based advice and national nutritional policies.

OBJECTIVE
Recently, nutraceuticals have been widely explored in many medical fields and their use is also increasing in oral and dental problems. Since the nutraceutical evidence landscape in the literature has not been fully elucidated yet, this review aims to examine the effects of commercially available nutraceuticals and their potential evidence and applications in dentistry.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A scoping review was conducted following the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR)" checklist. The electronic search was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science on March 2022. The inclusion criteria include humans, clinical trials, randomized controlled trials (RCT), reviews, and systematic reviews published over the last ten years.
RESULTS
18 studies met the eligibility criteria. There were 2 RCTs, 11 systematic reviews, and four narrative reviews. In most studies, the clinical indications were oral leucoplakia, periodontitis, osseointegration of implants, oral mucositis, oral clefts, and oral health. Probiotics, prebiotics, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and vitamins A, B, C, D, and E were the most common nutraceuticals used in dentistry.
CONCLUSIONS
Nutraceuticals are foods that, according to the literature, may be useful for preventing and treating dental diseases.

PURPOSE
The main purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the association between the stroke (risk of stroke and the mortality due to stroke) and vitamin A, its organic compounds and its provitamins.
METHOD
Major databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Studies with human samples were included for risk assessment. The association was assessed using odds ratio (()) and a random-effect model. statistic, variance () and prediction interval were used for heterogeneity assessment. The funnel plot was used for publication bias.
RESULTS
Twenty-one studies including 5789 stroke patients were retrieved. Twenty studies had sufficient information for quantitative analyses. The pooled effect showed an inverse association between vitamin A and its organic compound with the risk of stroke (() = -0.46 95%CI (-0.81;-0.12)) and with the risk of mortality due to stroke (() = -0.39 95%CI (-0.74;-0.04)). However, according to subgroup analyses, the association was dependent on the compound in a way that retinol and beta-carotene were the most effective compounds. The effects of several confounding factors and the threshold levels for vitamin A and its organic compound on the effectiveness were discussed.
CONCLUSION
Insufficiency of retinol and beta-carotene significantly increased the risk of stroke; however, due to heterogeneity between studies more studies are needed for evaluating clinical significance of this outcome.

OBJECTIVE
To clarify the associations of dietary vitamin A and beta-carotene intake with depression based on a meta-analysis of observational studies.
METHODS
An extensive literature search on February 2022 (PubMed, Web of Science and Embase) was employed to identify observational studies on the associations of dietary vitamin A and beta-carotene intake with depression. The pooled relative risk (RR) of depression for the highest vs. lowest dietary vitamin A and beta-carotene intake category, and the standard mean difference (SMD) of dietary vitamin A and beta-carotene intake for depression vs. control subjects, were calculated.
RESULTS
A total of 25 observational studies (100,955 participants), which included 24 cross-sectional/case-control and 1 prospective cohort study, were included in this study. The overall multi-variable adjusted RR demonstrated that dietary vitamin A intake was inversely associated with depression ( = 0.83, 95%CI: 0.70-1.00; = 0.05). In addition, the combined SMD showed that the dietary vitamin A intake in depression was also lower than that in control subjects (SMD = -0.13, 95%CI: -0.18 to -0.07; < 0.001). On the other hand, the overall multi-variable adjusted RR indicated that dietary beta-carotene intake was negatively associated with depression ( = 0.63, 95%CI: 0.55-0.72; < 0.001). The combined SMD showed that the dietary beta-carotene intake in depression was also lower than that in control subjects (SMD = -0.34, 95%CI: -0.48 to -0.20; < 0.001).
CONCLUSION
Our results suggest that both dietary vitamin A and beta-carotene intake is inversely associated with depression. However, due to the limited evidence, further prospective cohort studies are still needed.

PURPOSE
Vitamin A and its derivatives positively influence the differentiation of epithelia and other tissues and prevent the proliferation of preneoplastic and neoplastic cells. Vitamin A is therefore taken into account as a potential supporting factor in cancer therapy.
METHODS
In November 2020, a systematic search was conducted searching five electronic databases (EMBASE, Cochrane, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Medline) to find studies looking at the effects of using vitamin A as a complementary therapy for cancer patients. From all 12,823 search results, 9 publications referring to 9 studies with 4296 patients were included in this systematic review.
RESULTS
The patients treated with vitamin A were diagnosed with various cancers and stages. Outcome variables were overall survival of cancer, progression-free survival, occurrence of second primary tumours and recurrences, improvement of chronic radiation-induced proctopathy and side effects of vitamin A. For the most part, the studies had a limited methodological quality. In summary, it can be said that due to the methodological deficiencies of the studies, no concrete statement can be made regarding the prolongation of overall survival and progression-free survival. There is also no evidence of the benefit of vitamin A in the treatment of chronic radiation-induced proctopathy, which can be attributed to methodological deficiencies in the study, as well. In the studies that report on side effects, it becomes clear that side effects, such as mucocutaneous symptoms, temporary increase in liver enzymes and gastrointestinal side effects occur more frequently in the group with vitamin A intervention.
CONCLUSION
The limited interpretability of the results due to the methodological deficiencies of the included studies does not allow a final statement on the benefits of vitamin A as a complementary treatment for cancer patients.

Micronutrient deficiencies are a worldwide public health concern. Emerging evidence supports the ability of probiotics to enhance micronutrient status, which could aid in the prevention of non-communicable disease-associated malnutrition. This systematic review evaluated evidence of the efficacy of probiotic supplementation to improve micronutrient status in healthy subjects. The authors searched for published English language peer-reviewed journal articles in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar databases from inception to July 2020 using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The quality of eligible studies was assessed using the Revised Cochrane Risk-of-Bias tool (RoB)2 and Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions tool (ROBINS-I tool). Fourteen original studies out of 2790 met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that, despite varying degrees of efficacy, the intake of certain probiotics in healthy subjects was associated with a positive impact on the status of certain micronutrients (vitamin B12, calcium, folate, iron and zinc). A limitation was that studies were widely heterogeneous in terms of participant age, probiotic strain, species, dosage, intervention duration, and form of administration. Additional clinical trials are warranted to determine the most effective strains of probiotics, doses and durations of interventions.

Hemolysis is one of the main pathophysiological characteristics of sickle cell disease (SCD) and might cause or could be the result of oxidative stress. Antioxidants are studied in SCD due to their potential to ensure redox balance and minimize deleterious effects on erythrocyte membranes. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy of antioxidant nutrient supplementation on reducing hemolysis in SCD patients through randomized clinical trials. We conducted our study according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses and the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions investigating whether antioxidants could improve the hemolytic status of SCD patients. This study included 587 articles published until April 2020. We reduced this pool to 12 articles by excluding duplicates, reviews, comments, and studies with non-human subjects. Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and zinc were the antioxidants that reportedly improved the indirect hemolysis parameters such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, or red blood cells. High-dose vitamin C and E supplementation worsened hemolysis, causing increased reticulocytes, lactate dehydrogenase, indirect bilirubin, and haptoglobin. More intervention studies especially high-quality controlled randomized clinical trials are needed to investigate the effects of antioxidant nutrients in reducing hemolysis in SCD.
