PURPOSE
To investigate the effect of impression technique (conventional preliminary alginate and digital scan) and operator experience in impression making (experienced in digital and conventional, experienced in conventional and inexperienced in digital, and inexperienced in conventional and digital) on impression time, satisfaction and stress levels, and the preference of the operators.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
One patient was assigned for each of the 60 operators, who were experienced in impression techniques at different levels (Group 1: experienced in conventional and digital, Group 2: experienced in conventional and inexperienced in digital, Group 3: inexperienced in conventional and digital). They made conventional impressions (irreversible hydrocolloid) and digital scans (Trios 3) from the same patient. The impression times were recorded at each step (patient registration, maxillary arch, mandibular arch, and bite registration) and in total. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used for the operator satisfaction for applicability, comfort, and hygiene; the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory form (STAI-TX1) was used for stress, and a questionnaire was completed to measure the operator's impression preference. The data were analyzed with a 2-way ANOVA and Chi-square test (α = 0.05).
RESULTS
A significant interaction was found between the operator experience in impression making and the impression technique on time for maxillary and mandibular arch impressions and total time (p ≤ 0.002). Operator experience and impression technique interaction had a significant effect on comfort and average VAS scores (p ≤ 0.016). Whereas, no significant effect of this interaction was found on stress (p ≥ 0.195). Operator experience in impression making had a significant effect on applicability (p < 0.001), and the impression technique had a significant effect on hygiene VAS scores (p < 0.001). Operators in Group 1 and Group 3 preferred the digital scans, however, operators in Group 2 had no preference (p = 0.022).
CONCLUSION
Operator experience in impression making and impression technique had varying effects on clinician's impression time, comfort, applicability, hygiene, and preference. Operators needed less time for the impressions they were experienced with. Operator stress level was not affected by the operator experience in impression making and the impression technique. Dental students and operators experienced in both techniques were satisfied with the digital scans and they preferred digital scans. Operators experienced with conventional impressions were satisfied with conventional impressions but didn't have a preference for the impression type.

OBJECTIVES
This work aimed to synthesize a novel injectable alginate impression material and evaluate its accuracy.
METHODS
Certain proportions of sodium alginate, trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate, potassium fluorotitanate, diatomaceous earth, and other ingredients were dissolved in water and mixed evenly with a planetary centrifugal mixer to obtain a certain viscosity base paste. Certain proportions of calcium sulfate hemihydrate, magnesium oxide, glycerin, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 were mixed evenly with a planetary centrifugal mixer to obtain the reactor paste with the same viscosity as the base paste. The base and reactor pastes were poured into a two-cylinder cartridge at a 2∶1 volume ratio. A gun device was used to accomplish mixing by compressing materials into a mixing tip. The samples were divided into three groups: injectable alginate impression materials (IA group) as the experimental group, and Jeltrate alginate impression materials (JA group) and Silagum-putty/light addition silicone rubber impression materials (SI group) as the two control groups.
RESULTS
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the injectable alginate impression materials had a denser structure and fewer bubbles than the commercial alginate impression material. The accuracy of the three kinds of impression materials was evaluated by 3D image superposition. The deviations between the three test group models and the standard model (trueness) were 49.58 μm±1.453 μm (IA group), 54.75 μm±7.264 μm (JA group), and 30.92 μm±1.013 μm (SI group). The deviations of the models within each test group (precision) were 85.79 μm±8.191 μm (IA group), 97.65 μm±11.060 μm (JA group), and 56.51 μm±4.995 μm (SI group). Significant differences in trueness and precision were found among the three kinds of impression materials (<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
The accuracy of the new injectable alginate impression material was better than that of the traditional powder-type alginate impression material but worse than that of the addition silicone rubber impression materials. The novel injec-table alginate impression material demonstrated good operation performance and impression accuracy, showing broad application prospect.

OBJECTIVE
The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the influence of the characteristics of intraoral scan bodies (ISBs) on the accuracy of intraoral scanning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
An electronic search was conducted through PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus and Cochrane Library, up to March 2023. The literature search intended to retrieve all relevant clinical and in vitro studies about the effect that the various properties of ISBs may have on the accuracy (trueness and precision) of intraoral scanning. Only publications in English language were selected with animal studies, case reports, case series, technique presentation articles and expert opinions being excluded.
RESULTS
A total of 28 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this systematic review. They were published between 2019 and 2023 and were all in vitro studies. Among the parameters described, the scan body material, position, geometry, height, diameter, and fixation torque were evaluated. The most common materials used for ISBs were polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and titanium alloys. The diameter and position of ISBs seemed to affect the trueness of implant impressions. Subgingival implant position and decreased ISB height affected negatively the trueness of scanning. Geometrical characteristics of ISBs also affect the implant impression accuracy, especially the bevel location and the types of designing modifications.
CONCLUSIONS
The characteristics of the currently used ISBs vary widely and the available scientific evidence is not yet conclusive about the optimal design of ISB. The implant impression accuracy achieved by any of the studied parameters is encouraging. Clinical studies are however necessary for more concrete conclusions.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
ISBs play a vital role in the digital workflow and influence significantly the accuracy and fit of implant restorations. More clinical trials are needed in order to conclude to the optimal characteristics of ISBs which would further enhance the success of the restorations.

Dental materials are inevitably contaminated with oral microorganisms. To prevent transmission of infectious diseases, impressions need to be disinfected. In the present study, we examined the disinfection effects on impression materials and biofilm removal by sodium dichloroisocyanurate (SDIC). Exponentially growing Streptococcus mutans, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, and dental plaque bacteria were suspended in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and exposed for 1, 5 and 10 min to 1 mL of the 10 ppm, 100 ppm, 1,000 ppm, and 10,000 ppm SDIC solutions. The bactericidal effect was evaluated by colony forming units of each microorganisms. Moreover, the effect of SDIC solution on S. mutans biofilm was examined. Bactericidal effects of SDIC solutions on oral bacteria on dental impression surfaces were assessed and the surface quality of dental casts after immersion in SDIC solution for 30 min was observed under a scanning electron microscope. The number of all bacterial strains, including plaque bacteria, were significantly decreased by SDIC solution treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Significant S. mutans biofilm removing activity of SDIC was observed in 1,000 and 10,000 ppm solution. The number of oral bacteria adhering to the surfaces of impressions markedly decreased following 10-min immersion in the 1,000 ppm SDIC solution. The 30-min immersion of dental impression in the 1,000 ppm SDIC solution did not adversely affect the surface roughness of dental casts. The results indicate that SDIC Solution is useful to deactivate oral bacteria on dental impression.

INTRODUCTION
Undergraduate dental curriculum consisting of digital tools is essential in today's era of modern dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate final-year undergraduate dental students' perception of using intraoral scanners and the feasibility of increasing exposure to intraoral scanners in their undergraduate programme.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Forty students volunteered to complete one maxillary conventional and optical impression (TRIOS 3, 3Shape A/S). Questionnaires were used to assess their familiarity, perceived confidence levels, difficulties and user-friendliness of each technique using a visual analogue scale prior to and after experiencing each impression technique.
RESULTS
Students felt more familiar with conventional (C) than digital (D) impressions (P = .00). Their pre-confidence level was also higher with the conventional method (C: 80.9 ± 15.5; D: 39.6 ± 25.5); however, the post-confidence level significantly increased for the digital impression technique (P = .00). Participants perceived conventional technique to be easier (P = .02) and faster than optical impressions (P = .03). User-friendliness of the intraoral scanner scored moderate (67.7 ± 22.9). The difference in the mean total working time was not significant (P = .05). Forty per cent of participants indicated that they preferred using the digital impression technique.
CONCLUSIONS
Although final-year undergraduate students still perceived the conventional impression technique to be easier and faster than digital scanning, there was a significant increase in the level of confidence by this cohort after only one occasion of clinical optical impressions. Undergraduate dental students are ready to uptake new technology, and it should be strongly considered to incorporate more digital scanning during their training.

Dental impressions are used to produce a replica of an oral structure for use as a permanent record or in the production of a dental restoration or prosthesis. Accurate impression-taking is an essential procedure in implant dentistry. Traditionally, clinicians have used two different implant impression techniques: transfer and pick-up. The pick-up impression technique is considered to be the more accurate of the two because with this technique the impression copings are maintained within the impression upon removal from the mouth, thus eliminating the potential for error that may occur when manually placing the copings in the impression as in the transfer technique. This design has become increasingly popular and useful for multi-unit impressions. The purpose of this article is to review various pick-up impression copings and propose a new impression coping design for accurate, easy impression-taking without discrepancies.

AIM
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of digital impressions made by 3rd and 4th year dental students using a retrospective record review at one USA dental school during a 1-year period.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
After reviewing patient records related to quality assurance, 125 digital impressions and the produced restorations were evaluated. Effectiveness and acceptability of digital impressions and restorations were associated with students' educational level, number of prepared teeth scanned, type of produced restoration, and restorative material used. Fisher's exact and chi-square tests were used for the statistical analysis. All dental students had previous experience of the digital curriculum in their preclinical education.
RESULTS
A total of 91% of the digital impressions were acceptable, and 80% of the produced restorations had clinically acceptable margins. Impression approval and restoration acceptance were not affected by students' educational level, number of preparations or restoration type. Restoration acceptance was significantly affected by restorative material (P = 0.039), with higher rates of acceptable marginal integrity found with glass-ceramic and zirconia materials.
CONCLUSIONS
Within the parameters of the present study, 3rd and 4th year dental students, after having extensive education in the preclinical curriculum, can utilize digital impressions effectively for clinical practice. The results show that with adequate educational experiences, dental students can use digital impressions effectively for clinically acceptable restorations. Dental schools can and should educate students in digital dentistry.

BACKGROUND
This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of digital impression techniques for implant-supported restorations, and to assess their economic feasibility.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Two independent electronic database searches were conducted in the Pubmed/MedLine, Cochrane Library, and Lilacs databases complimented by a manual search, selecting relevant clinical and studies published between 1st January 2009 and 28st February 2019. All type of studies ( and ) were included in this systematic review.
RESULTS
Twenty-seven studies (8 and 19 studies) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. No meta-analysis was performed due to a large heterogeneity of the study protocols. The passive fit of superstructures on dental implants presented similar results between digital and conventional impression techniques. The studies considered that several factors influence the accuracy of implant impression taking: distance and angulation between implants, depth of placement, type of scanner, scanning strategy, characteristics of scanbody, and operator experience. Regarding the economic viability of intraoral scanning systems, only one study reported any benefit in comparison with conventional techniques.
CONCLUSIONS
Digital impressions of dental implants can be considered a viable alternative in cases of one or two contiguous dental implants. However, more studies are needed to evaluate the accuracy of digital techniques in full-arch implant-supported restorations. Intraoral scanner, dental implant, prosthesis, misfit, systematic review.

Impression-making is a necessary part of providing restorative and rehabilitative dentistry to patients. Results were expressed as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes, and as mean differences (MD) or standardised mean differences (SMD) for continuous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Meta-analysis used a random-effects model.Results Nine studies were included, eight involving CD. Six of the CD studies were at high risk of bias, two at low risk. For complete dentures there was low-quality evidence that silicone was a better final-impression material for oral health-related quality of life than alginate. There was also very low-quality evidence of no clear differences between the single-stage impression alginate and the two stage- two step elastomer groups in participant-reported quality of life using OHIP-EDENT. The RCT involving RPD altered-cast technique versus one-piece cast technique found low quality evidence of no difference between groups, for general satisfaction at one-year follow-up.Conclusions There is no clear evidence that one technique or material has a substantial advantage over another for making complete dentures and removable partial dentures. Available evidence for the relative benefits of different denture fabrication techniques and final-impression materials is limited and is of low or very low quality. More high-quality RCTs are required.
