Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) is a plant that historically has been used in medicine for its antimicrobial, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic properties. In dermatology, bloodroot has been utilized for its cytotoxic effects; it has been marketed as black salve as an anticancer treatment, but it does not come without notable toxicities. Unwanted cosmetic outcomes and even irreversible scarring and premalignant conditions have been reported. This article aims to bring awareness to both the therapeutic potential of S canadensis as well as the potential toxicities and risks associated with this North American plant.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE
Sanhuang ointment (SHO) has been widely used in the traditional Chinese medical system for 1500 years and has efficacy in clearing away heat and dampness, reducing swelling, and alleviating pain. Hemorrhoids will damage the normal physiological function of the body, resulting in obstructed defecation, accompanied by massive hemorrhage and necrosis of tissues and cells, which is easy to breed bacteria and cause infection. SHO can promote lesion healing in hemorrhoid rats, but the pharmacological mechanism underlying this effect remains unknown.
AIM
To evaluate the effect of SHO on experimental hemorrhoids in rats induced by croton oil and glacial acetic acid.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
In this research, the effective components of SHO were analyzed in detail by High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Hemorrhoids were induced by 6% balsam and glacial acetic acid respectively in the anorectal region of rats. SHO was administered externally to the anorectal region of rats at doses of 185 mg/g (crude drug/ointment), 370 mg/g (crude drug/ointment) and 740 mg/g (crude drug/ointment) for 11 days. Mayinglong musk hemorrhoids ointment (1 g/kg) and Taining cream (1 g/kg) were used as reference anti hemorrhoids drugs. On the 11th day, hemorrhoids were evaluated by measuring the biochemical parameters of hemorrhoids in rats and the histology of anorectal tissues.
RESULTS
Using high performance liquid chromatography liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, 41 compounds, including phenylpropionic acids and alkaloids, were identified. the fingerprints of 18 common peaks were identified. In Hemorrhoids like rats, acetic acid induced inflammation was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner during SHO treatment. In addition, the detailed experimental results show that SHO can effectively improve hemorrhoids by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines in serum, reversing the down-regulation of vanillin subtype 1 (TRPV1), calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP) levels of pain related genes in anal tissues, and the up regulation of Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels of vascular growth related genes.
CONCLUSION
The results showed that SHO could alleviate the edema caused by the exudation of anorectal tissue fluid in rats by anti-inflammatory effect and reducing the Vascular permeability of rats. The study validates the traditional use of SHO in the treatment of hemorrhoids and demonstrates its anti-hemorrhoidal potential.

The diagnostic accuracy of dermoscopy (DS) for scabies, a highly contagious parasitic disease, remains disputed. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of DS in scabies, analyze the factors influencing DS, and explore its role in post-treatment evaluation. Patients with suspected scabies were randomly divided into 2 groups: 71 patients in the skin scraping (SS) group and 73 patients in the DS group. The diagnostic efficiencies of SS and DS in these groups were calculated. We also analyzed the influence of body part and investigator competence on the accuracy of DS. Then 16 body parts with typical signs of scabies were monitored by DS 2 and 4 day after sulfur ointment treatment. The sensitivity and specificity of DS were 98.3% and 88.5%, respectively. Hands, arms, and the abdomen had higher positivity rates than other body parts (P<0.001). The accuracy of dermatologists' interpretations of images negative for scabies in the intermediate- and high-level groups was higher than that in the low-level group (P<0.001). At follow-up, the mites were still visible on 43.8% to 62.5% of the skin lesions 2 and 4 day after sulfur ointment treatment. These results showed that DS could significantly increase the accuracy of diagnosing scabies owing to its high sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, it may be useful for monitoring clinical responses to anti-parasitic treatment.

Yuhong ointment (YHO) is famous for its efficacy in clearing away heat and dampness, reducing swelling and relieving pain, and it has been used for more than 600 years. Scalding damages the skin's defense function, resulting in a large number of necrotic tissues and cells on the wound surface, which favors bacterial growth and inflammation. If the inflammation reaction is not controlled on time, it may lead to reduced immunity and cause complications such as infection. Yuhong ointment can promote wound healing in scalded mice, but its potential pharmacological mechanism is still unclear.
AIM OF THE STUDY
This study focused on identifying the active ingredients of YHO and on investigating the performance of YHO in terms of anti-inflammatory activity and scald wound healing activity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) were performed to identify the active ingredients of YHO. The performance of transdermal delivery of YHO was studied via HPLC for analyzing the ingredients of the exposed skin liquid of mice. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis, immunohistochemistry, and real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) were used to investigate the anti-inflammatory and scald wound healing activity of YHO.
RESULTS
A total of 41 components of YHO were identified via HPLC and HPLC-MS for the first time. In the transdermal delivery experiment, the cumulative amounts of chlorogenic acid, sesamol, ferulic acid, and L-shikonin were calculated to be 342.28, 567.89, 384.54, and 528.67 μg/cm, respectively. Pharmacological activity experiments indicated that these four kinds of drugs exhibited different degrees of therapeutic effects on scald. Specifically, YHO high-dose (YHO-H) group showed better therapeutic ability (P < 0.01) than FN and MB group. Furthermore, the immune function of the YHO group was enhanced due to the continuous increment of the levels of Hydroxyproline (HYP), Immunoglobulin G (IgG), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and simultaneous decrement of the levels of TNF-α, TNF-β, IL-10, and IL-6 in the skin wound. Histological results showed that the thickening of skin tissue was alleviated after treatment with YHO. Moreover, the expression of substance P (SP), calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) and transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) was inhibited, and the expression of VEGF was promoted by YHO (P < 0.01). The qRT-PCR test results indicated that the YHO group exhibited better inhibitory effect on interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 10 (IL-10), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and Smad-3 mRNA expression levels than the other groups.
CONCLUSIONS
In this work, the active ingredients of YHO were identified via HPLC and HPLC-MS analysis. Importantly, YHO showed great advantages in transdermal delivery and scald wound healing, which can be attributed to the both anti-inflammatory and tissue regeneration mechanisms. Therefore, this work not only identified the active ingredients of YHO but also revealed the potential pharmacological mechanism of YHO for the healing of scald.

Accelerating wound healing, as well as preventing infection and scar formation are among the most important medical challenges. This study aims to examine the antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and anticancer properties of Morus nigra. The antimicrobial activities of ripe and unripe M. nigra fruit (MNF) extracts were tested. HPLC was employed to measure the components in the extract. Oserin ointment was made with 8 % extract. To test the ointment, 48 Wistar rats were randomly assigned into eight groups. The ointment was used daily by treating the wounds. Tissue histology and wound healing were assessed over nine days. Comparative evaluation of wound healing was conducted by analyzing TGF-β, TNF-α, and IL-1 mRNA levels. Finally, cytotoxic effects on AGS cancer and NIH-3 T3 fibroblast cells were examined. The ANOVA test and Prsim program were used for statistical analysis. Unripe MNF extract had good antimicrobial properties in standard and nosocomial strains. The most abundant compound in the extract was ascorbic acid (0.0441 mg/10 mg extract), followed by naringenin and gallic acid. In all groups treated with MNF extract ointment, a significant reduction in wound area was observed compared to other groups (p < 0.05). After six days of treatment, the microbial load was uncountable. In the microscopic studies of the wounds, a significant increase was observed in fibroblasts, angiogenesis, and in neutrophils in the first days as well as a decrease in the final days. The treatment caused a significant decline in the expression of IL-1 and TNF-α genes, as well as an increase in the expression of TGF-β (p < 0.05). This extract had no significant cytotoxic effects on human fibroblast cells (p > 0.05). In general, it can be concluded that the unripe MNF extract ointment can be a suitable option for the treatment of infectious and non-infectious skin wounds.

OBJECTIVE
To identify the effectiveness of interventions to prevent corneal injury in critically ill, sedated, and mechanically ventilated patients.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A systematic review of intervention studies was conducted in the following electronic databases: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, LIVIVO, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Study selection and data extraction were performed by two independent reviewers. Quality assessment of the randomized and non-randomized studies was performed using the Risk of Bias (RoB 2.0) and ROBINS-I Cochrane tools, respectively, and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cohort studies. The certainty of the evidence was assessed according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system.
RESULTS
15 studies were included. Meta-analysis showed that the risk of corneal injury in the lubricants group was 66% lower (RR = 0.34; 95 %CI: 0.13-0.92) than in the eye-taping group. The risk of corneal injury in the polyethylene chamber was 68% lower than in the eye ointment group (RR = 0.32; 95 %CI 0.07-1.44). The risk of bias was low in most of the studies included and the certainty of the evidence was evaluated.
CONCLUSIONS
The most effective interventions to prevent corneal injury in critically ill sedated mechanically ventilated, who have compromised blinking and eyelid closing mechanisms, are ocular lubrication, preferably gel or ointment, and protection of the corneas with a polyethylene chamber.
IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE
Critically ill, sedated, and mechanically ventilated patients who have compromised blinking and eyelid closing mechanisms must receive interventions to prevent corneal injury. Ocular lubrication, preferably gel or ointment, and protection of the corneas with a polyethylene chamber were the most effective interventions to prevent corneal injury in critically ill, sedated, and mechanically ventilated patients. A polyethylene chamber must be made commercially available for critically ill, sedated, and mechanically ventilated patients.

Wound-healing deficits of the skin, one of the most common complications in patients with diabetes, delay wound healing, significantly reducing the patient's QOL. Therefore, the topical treatment of wound areas with drug-containing ointments and dressings is important. In this study, we investigated the effect of various ointment bases on skin wound healing in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (STZ rats). Three ointment bases were used: white ointment (oil-based), absorbent cream (emulsion-based, w/o), and macrogol ointment (water-based). Skin wound healing in STZ rats was delayed compared with that in normal rats. Each of the three ointment bases was applied to the skin wound area in normal rats, and there was no difference in the therapeutic effect. The therapeutic effect of both white ointment and absorbent cream was higher in the STZ rats group than that in the non-treated group, and delayed wound healing was observed in STZ rats treated with macrogol ointment. In conclusion, skin wound healing in STZ rats is affected by the properties of the ointment base, and it is important to use an ointment base that controls the drying of the wound area in STZ rats. These findings provide information for the selection of ointment bases useful for application to skin wounds in patients with diabetes.

Radiodermatitis in breast cancer patients varies from mild irritation to life-threatening lesions. Several studies suggest a role for topical corticosteroid ointments in the treatment of radiodermatitis. Yet, to avoid the adverse effects of corticosteroids, many authors recommend the use of topical herbal products instead. The therapeutic role of herbal treatments has yet to be fully understood. This systematic review evaluates the role of topical or oral herbal medicines in radiodermatitis prevention and treatment. A systematic search of four databases (Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) was performed without language and time restrictions from their inception until April 2023. The bibliographies of potential articles were also searched manually. Studies evaluated and compared the effects of herbal preparations with the control group, on dermatitis induced by radiotherapy for breast cancer. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the included studies. Thirty-five studies were included in the systematic review. Studies which used herbal drugs including topical and oral formulations were evaluated. Herbal monotherapy and combination therapy were reported, and their effects on radiodermatitis were explained in the systematic review. In conclusion, henna ointments, silymarin gel, and Juango cream were reported to reduce the severity of radiodermatitis. These agents should be considered for radiodermatitis prophylaxis and treatment. The data on aloe gel and calendula ointment were conflicting. Further randomized controlled trials of herbal medications and new herbal formulations are required to determine their effects on breast cancer radiodermatitis.

OBJECTIVE
This study was designed to establish quality standards of Burnet gels and investigate the effects and mechanism of Burnet gels on steroid-dependent dermatitis (HDD) in guinea pigs.
METHODS
HPLC was used to determine the content of gallic acid, Gentiopicrin, and paeonol. A total of 48 male guinea pigs were recruited and randomly divided into control group, model group, tacrolimus ointment group, and Burnet gel group (Low, medium, and high concentration). The HDD guinea pig model was established by the 0.5% clobetasol propionate tincture. After HDD model establishment, control group and model group smeared normal saline and the rest of the group with corresponding drugs for three weeks. The contents of IFN-, IL-4, and IgE in the guinea pig serum were detected by the ELISA; the protein expression levels of FLG, LOR, and Caspase-14 in the epidermis of guinea pigs were detected by the immunohistochemical and Western blotting method.
RESULTS
The content of gallic acid, Gentiopicrin, and paeonol was 0.30 mg/g, 1.06 mg/g, and 0.56 mg/g. Compared with the normal group, the IFN-, IL-4, and IgE of guinea pig serum in the model group were significantly increased; the FLG, LOR, and Caspase-14 of guinea pig epidermis in the model group were significantly decreased; compared with the model group, the IFN-, IL-4, and IgE of guinea pig serum in the tacrolimus ointment group and Burnet gel group were significantly decreased; the FLG, LOR, and Caspase-14 of guinea pig epidermis in the tacrolimus ointment group and Burnet gel group were significantly increased.
CONCLUSION
Burnet gels can improve guinea pig HDD model, and the mechanism may be related to inhibiting skin inflammation and promoting the formation of epidermal skin barrier.
