The spatial release of masking (SRM) is often measured in virtual auditory environments created from head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) of a standardized adult head. Adults and children, however, differ in head dimensions and mismatched HRTFs are known to affect some aspects of binaural hearing. So far, there has been little research on HRTFs in children and it is unclear whether a large mismatch of spatial cues can degrade speech perception in complex environments. In two studies, the effect of non-individualized virtual environments on SRM accuracy in adults and children was examined. The SRMs were measured in virtual environments created from individual and non-individualized HRTFs and the equivalent real anechoic environment. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were measured for frontal target sentences and symmetrical speech maskers at 0° or ±90° azimuth. No significant difference between environments was observed for adults. In 7 to 12-year-old children, SRTs and SRMs improved with age, with SRMs approaching adult levels. SRTs differed slightly between environments and were significantly worse in a virtual environment based on HRTFs from a spherical head. Adult HRTFs seem sufficient to accurately measure SRTs in children even in complex listening conditions.

Informational masking has been investigated using the detection of an auditory target embedded in a random multi-tone masker. The build-up of the target percept is influenced by the masker and target properties. Most studies dealing with discrimination performance neglect the dynamics of perceptual awareness. This study aims at investigating the dynamics of perceptual awareness using multi-level survival models in an informational masking paradigm by manipulating masker uncertainty, masker-target similarity and target repetition rate. Consistent with previous studies, it shows that high target repetition rates, low masker-target similarity and low masker uncertainty facilitate target detection. In the context of evidence accumulation models, these results can be interpreted by changes in the accumulation parameters. The probabilistic description of perceptual awareness provides a benchmark for the choice of target and masker parameters in order to examine the underlying cognitive and neural dynamics of perceptual awareness.

The study aimed to examine the neural mechanisms underlying implicit other-race face processing by the use of the masked and unmasked priming manipulation. Two types of prime-target pairs were presented while recording Event-related potentials (ERPs): Same face pairs (prime-target were identical faces), and Different face pairs (prime-target were different faces). Prime-target pairs were half Asian (other-race) and half Caucasian (own-race) faces. The face stimuli on each pair were of the same gender and race. Participants (all Caucasians) had to decide whether the target was a male or a female face (gender task). The prime face could be unmasked or masked. On the behavioral side, our findings showed a race effect, that is slower reaction times (RTs) for other-race than own-race face stimuli, regardless of masking. On the ERPs side, our data showed a race effect across all components analyzed (P100, N100, N200, P300), under both the unmasked and masked manipulations. Besides, we found, in the unmasked condition, a priming effect as a function of race on the N100, N200, and P300 components; but, interestingly, in the masked condition, only on the P300. Overall, our findings provide evidence that race information is available very early in the brain and can strongly activate and influence people's behaviors even without conscious awareness.

Masked word repetition increases "old" responses on an episodic recognition test (Jacoby & Whitehouse, 1989). This effect is commonly attributed to perceptual fluency; that is, unconscious perception of the prime speeds reading of the target and this fluency leads to elevated familiarity. Two experiments directly tested the claim that perceptual fluency is responsible for word priming effects. Experiment 1 held prime-target meaning constant and altered the physical characteristics of match primes (e.g., "RIGHT" primes "RIGHT") by including both lowercase (e.g, "right") and mixed case primes (e.g., "rIgHt"). If word priming effects are due to perceptual fluency, then lowering the perceptual overlap between the prime and target should decrease or eliminate word priming effects. Instead, all three conditions showed robust priming effects in the behavioral and ERP (i.e., N400) measures. Experiment 2 equated the prime-target perceptual features and lowered the conceptual overlap by using orthographically similar nonwords as primes (e.g., "JIGHT" primes "RIGHT"). Removing prime-target conceptual overlap eliminated behavioral evidence of priming and N400 ERP differences correlated with priming. The evidence suggests that word priming effects on episodic recognition memory are more likely a product of conceptual fluency than perceptual fluency.

Masking has been widely used as a tinnitus therapy, with large individual differences in its effectiveness. The basis of this variation is unknown. We examined individual tinnitus and psychological responses to three masking types, energetic masking (bilateral broadband static or rain noise [BBN]), informational masking (BBN with a notch at tinnitus pitch and 3-dimensional cues) and a masker combining both effects (BBN with spatial cues). Eleven participants with chronic tinnitus were followed for 12 months, each person used each masking approach for 3 months with a 1 month washout-baseline. The Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI), Tinnitus Rating Scales, Positive and Negative Affect Scale and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, were measured every month of treatment. Electroencephalography (EEG) and psychoacoustic assessment was undertaken at baseline and following 3 months of each masking sound. The computational modeling of EEG data was based on the framework of brain-inspired Spiking Neural Network (SNN) architecture called NeuCube, designed for this study for mapping, learning, visualizing and classifying of brain activity patterns. EEG was related to clinically significant change in the TFI using the SNN model. The SNN framework was able to predict sound therapy responders (93% accuracy) from non-responders (100% accuracy) using baseline EEG recordings. The combination of energetic and informational masking was an effective treatment sound in more individuals than the other sounds used. Although the findings are promising, they are preliminary and require confirmation in independent and larger samples.

Collinear facilitation, the mechanism for grouping contour elements, is a process involving lateral interactions that improve the detectability of a target by the presence of collinear flankers. It was shown that the development of collinear facilitation is experience dependent and that it may be impaired when the visual input is distorted in one meridian (meridional amblyopia). In oblique astigmatism, the blurring is on the opposite oblique meridian in both eyes, resulting in two conflicting images, which may affect the development of binocular vision. We hypothesized that the collinear facilitation of adults with oblique astigmatism is reminiscent of the abnormal development of the lateral facilitation of meridional amblyopia. We explored the perception of binocular vision and collinear facilitation in cases of both distorted and non-distorted vision. Fully corrected participants that tested for the target contrast detection of Gabor patches and two collinear flankers, presented for 80 ms, were positioned at different orientations (0° (180°), 45°, 90°, and 135°) and for different eyes (monocular, binocular). The results show a significant anisotropy for monocular collinear facilitation between the blured and the clear meridians, being lower in the blurriest meridian than in the clearest meridian, resembling the meridional amblyopia results. Collinear facilitation results in poor binocular summation between the monocular channels. Our results indicate that the perceptual behavior was similar to that of meridional amblyopic subjects having an anisotropy of collinear facilitation between cardinal meridians in oblique astigmatic subjects.

In noisy contexts, sound discrimination improves when the auditory sources are separated in space. This phenomenon, named Spatial Release from Masking (SRM), arises from the interaction between the auditory information reaching the ear and spatial attention resources. To examine the relative contribution of these two factors, we exploited an audio-visual illusion in a hearing-in-noise task to create conditions in which the initial stimulation to the ears is held constant, while the perceived separation between speech and masker is changed illusorily (visual capture of sound). In two experiments, we asked participants to identify a string of five digits pronounced by a female voice, embedded in either energetic (Experiment 1) or informational (Experiment 2) noise, before reporting the perceived location of the heard digits. Critically, the distance between target digits and masking noise was manipulated both physically (from 22.5 to 75.0 degrees) and illusorily, by pairing target sounds with visual stimuli either at same (audio-visual congruent) or different positions (15 degrees offset, leftward or rightward: audio-visual incongruent). The proportion of correctly reported digits increased with the physical separation between the target and masker, as expected from SRM. However, despite effective visual capture of sounds, performance was not modulated by illusory changes of target sound position. Our results are compatible with a limited role of central factors in the SRM phenomenon, at least in our experimental setting. Moreover, they add to the controversial literature on the limited effects of audio-visual capture in auditory stream separation.

When two tasks, Task 1 and Task 2, are conducted in close temporal proximity and a separate speeded response is required for each target (T1 and T2), T2 report performance decreases as a function of its temporal proximity to T1. This so-called psychological refractory period (PRP) effect on T2 processing is largely assumed to reflect interference from T1 response selection on T2 response selection. However, interference on early perceptual processing of T2 has been observed in a modified paradigm, which required changes in visual-spatial attention, sensory modality, task modality, and response modality across targets. The goal of the present study was to investigate the possibility of early perceptual interference by systematically and iteratively removing each of these possible non perceptual confounds, in a series of four experiments. To assess T2 visual memory consolidation success, T2 was presented for a varying duration and immediately masked. T2 report accuracy, which was taken as a measure of perceptual-encoding or consolidation-success, decreased across all experimental control conditions as T1-T2 onset proximity increased. We argue that our results, in light of previous studies, show that central processing of a first target, responsible for the classical PRP effect, also interferes with early perceptual processing of a second target. We end with a discussion of broader implications for psychological refractory period and attentional blink effects.

Ambient sound can mask acoustic signals. The current study addressed how echolocation in people is affected by masking sound, and the role played by type of sound and spatial (i.e. binaural) similarity. We also investigated the role played by blindness and long-term experience with echolocation, by testing echolocation experts, as well as blind and sighted people new to echolocation. Results were obtained in two echolocation tasks where participants listened to binaural recordings of echolocation and masking sounds, and either localized echoes in azimuth or discriminated echo audibility. Echolocation and masking sounds could be either clicks or broad band noise. An adaptive staircase method was used to adjust signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) based on participants' responses. When target and masker had the same binaural cues (i.e. both were monoaural sounds), people performed better (i.e. had lower SNRs) when target and masker used different types of sound (e.g. clicks in noise-masker or noise in clicks-masker), as compared to when target and masker used the same type of sound (e.g. clicks in click-, or noise in noise-masker). A very different pattern of results was observed when masker and target differed in their binaural cues, in which case people always performed better when clicks were the masker, regardless of type of emission used. Further, direct comparison between conditions with and without binaural difference revealed binaural release from masking only when clicks were used as emissions and masker, but not otherwise (i.e. when noise was used as masker or emission). This suggests that echolocation with clicks or noise may differ in their sensitivity to binaural cues. We observed the same pattern of results for echolocation experts, and blind and sighted people new to echolocation, suggesting a limited role played by long-term experience or blindness. In addition to generating novel predictions for future work, the findings also inform instruction in echolocation for people who are blind or sighted.

Uncertainty regarding the frequency spectrum of a masker can have an adverse effect on the ability to focus selective attention on a target frequency channel, yielding informational masking (IM). This study sought to determine if uncertainty regarding the modulation spectrum of a masker can have an analogous adverse effect on the ability to focus selective attention on a target modulation channel, yielding IM in the modulation domain, or "modulation IM." A single-interval, two-alternative forced-choice (yes-no) procedure was used. The task was to detect 32-Hz target sinusoidal amplitude modulation (SAM) imposed on a broadband-noise carrier in the presence of masker SAM imposed on the same carrier. Six maskers, spanning the range from 8 to 128 Hz in half-octave steps, were tested, excluding those that fell within a two-octave protected zone surrounding the target. Psychometric functions (d'-vs-target modulation depth) were measured for each masker under two conditions: a fixed (low-uncertainty/low-IM) condition, in which the masker was the same on all trials within a block, and a random (high-uncertainty/high-IM) condition, in which it varied randomly from presentation-to-presentation. Thresholds and slopes extracted from the psychometric functions differed markedly between the conditions. These results are consistent with the idea that IM occurs in the modulation domain.
