OBJECTIVE
Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a life-threatening infectious disease. Treatment requires multiple antimicrobial agents used for extended periods of time. The present study sought to evaluate the treatment success rate of bedaquiline-based regimens in MDR-TB patients.
METHODS
This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published up to March 15, 2021. The pooled treatment success rates and 95% CIs were assessed with the fixed-effect model or the random-effects model. Values of p < 0.05 were considered significant for publication bias.
RESULTS
A total of 2,679 articles were retrieved by database searching. Of those, 29 met the inclusion criteria. Of those, 25 were observational studies (including a total of 3,536 patients) and 4 were experimental studies (including a total of 440 patients). The pooled treatment success rate was 74.7% (95% CI, 69.8-79.0) in the observational studies and 86.1% (95% CI, 76.8-92.1; p = 0.00; I2 = 75%) in the experimental studies. There was no evidence of publication bias (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
In patients with MDR-TB receiving bedaquiline, culture conversion and treatment success rates are high even in cases of extensive resistance.

BACKGROUND
Since research on disease biomarkers of tuberculosis (TB) and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) provides hope for simple point-of-care testing, we aim to summarize and analyze the evidence for the clinical relevance of IFN-γ-inducible protein 10 (IP-10) and IFN-γ/interleukin 2 (IL-2) as diagnostic biomarkers for TB.
METHODS
The search terms tuberculosis, tuberculous pleurisy, pulmonary tuberculosis, latent tuberculosis infection, biomarkers, markers, IFN-γ-inducible protein 10, IP-10, interleukin 2, and IL-2 were used to search the PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and Weipu databases. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to September 2021. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies, and the meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.20.
RESULTS
A total of 9 articles were included for meta-analysis. The quality assessment showed that the overall quality of the included articles was met the requirements. The results showed that the overall sensitivity and specificity of IP-10 were 0.77 (95% CI, 0.71-0.82) and 0.84 (95% CI, 0.80-0.88), respectively. The overall sensitivity and specificity of IL-2 were 0.82 (95% CI, 0.74-0.89) and 0.95 (95% CI, 0.88-0.98), respectively. The areas under the curves (AUCs) of the IP-10 and IL-2 summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curves were 0.8592 and 0.9666, respectively.
DISCUSSION
The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis showed that IP-10 and IL-2 as biomarkers have good clinical relevance to TB and can be used for the clinical screening of high-risk TB populations. However, a prospective cohort study across multiple regions using a large sample size should also be conducted.

BACKGROUND
Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health issue that has long threatened and continues to threaten human health. While previous studies are important in the search for a cure for TB, to eradicate the disease it is also crucial to analyze environmental influences. Therefore, this study determined the potential effect of inadequate housing on TB and the magnitude of the effect.
METHODS
This is a systematic review of the effects of inadequate housing on TB. Between Jan 1, 2011 and Oct 25, 2020, we searched four electronic databases using the search terms "housing AND tuberculosis" or "housing AND TB". The target population comprised residents of inadequate housing and the homeless.
RESULTS
We found 26 eligible studies. The distribution of the studies across continents was uneven, and the housing issues of interest seemed to vary depending on the economic level of the country. The eight steps identified in TB development and the consequences thereof were more strongly associated with housing affordability than with housing quality.
CONCLUSIONS
This is the first systematic review to identify the effects of inadequate housing on TB and to categorize inadequate-housing-related exposure to TB in terms of affordability and quality. The steps identified in TB development and the consequences thereof had a greater association with housing affordability than with housing quality. Therefore, public health interventions regarding housing affordability could be more diverse, and interventions that support affordable housing for residents of inadequate housing and the homeless should proceed simultaneously to improve housing quality.

BACKGROUND
Hepatic Actinomycosis (HA) is one of the infections that causes disorders in patients when diagnosed untimely and inappropriately.
METHODS
Case reports on HA in patients published between 2000 and April 2020 were gathered by carrying out a structured search through PubMed/Medline.
RESULTS
Through a survey of the Medline database, 130 studies were identified and then, 64 cases with HA were included in the final analysis. Asia had the largest share of cases with 37.5% (24 reports), followed by Europe and the Americas. Affected patients were predominantly males (64%) and the overall mortality rate was 1% with only one male patient in his 50 s dying. Nearly all patients (92%) were immunocompetent. However, in four patients, the use of immunosuppressive medication led to depression of the immune system. Most of the patients (80%) experienced complications. In terms of the complications, the most frequent ones were previous history of abdominal surgery (32%) and foreign bodies in the abdominopelvic region (20%). Actinomyces israelii was the most common pathogen isolated from patients. Abdominal pain (66%), fever (62%), weight loss (48%), night sweat, malaise, and anorexia (14%) over about 3.1 months were the most frequently reported clinical symptoms. Extension to one or more surrounding organs was evident in 18 patients (28%). Histopathologic examination confirmed infection in 67% of the patients and samples obtained from liver puncture biopsy (32%) were most frequently used in diagnosis. Surgery or puncture drainage + anti-infection was the most common method to treat patients and penicillin, Amoxicillin, Doxycycline, and ampicillin were the most frequently used drugs to control infection.
CONCLUSION
HA should be considered in patients with a subacute or chronic inflammatory process of the liver. With accurate and timely diagnosis of infection, extensive surgery can be prevented.

INTRODUCTION
Cancer is a major cause of death among people who experience tuberculosis (TB), but little is known about its timing and incidence following TB treatment. Our primary objectives were to estimate the pooled risk of all and site-specific malignancies in people with TB compared to the general population or suitable controls. Our secondary objective was to describe the pooled risk of cancer at different time points following TB diagnosis.
METHODS
This study was prospectively registered (PROSPERO: CRD42021277819). We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Database for studies published between 1980 and 2021. We included original observational research articles that estimated cancer risk among people with TB compared to controls. Studies were excluded if they had a study population of fewer than 50 individuals; used cross-sectional, case series, or case report designs; and had a follow-up period of less than 12 months. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to obtain the pooled risk of cancer in the TB population.
RESULTS
Of the 5,160 unique studies identified, data from 17 studies were included. When compared to controls, the pooled standardized incidence ratios (SIR) of all cancer (SIR 1.62, 95% CI 1.35-1.93, I2 = 97%) and lung cancer (SIR 3.20, 95% CI 2.21-4.63, I2 = 90%) was increased in the TB population. The pooled risk of all cancers and lung cancer was highest within the first year following TB diagnosis (SIR 4.70, 95% CI 1.80-12.27, I2 = 99%) but remained over five years of follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS
People with TB have an increased risk of both pulmonary and non-pulmonary cancers. Further research on cancer following TB diagnosis is needed to develop effective screening and early detection strategies. Clinicians should have a high index of suspicion for cancer in people with TB, particularly in the first year following TB diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE
To identify literature on health literacy levels and examine its association with tuberculosis treatment adherence and treatment outcomes.
METHODS
Two authors independently searched Pubmed®, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, LILACS, Global Health Medicus and ScienceDirect for articles reporting on health literacy levels and tuberculosis that were published between January 2000 and September 2023. We defined limited health literacy as a person's inability to understand, process, and make decisions from information obtained concerning their own health. Methodological quality and the risk of bias was assessed using the JBI critical appraisal tools. We used a random effects model to assess the pooled proportion of limited health literacy, the association between health literacy and treatment adherence, and the relationship between health literacy and tuberculosis-related knowledge.
FINDINGS
Among 5813 records reviewed, 22 studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed that 51.2% (95% confidence interval, CI: 48.0-54.3) of tuberculosis patients exhibit limited health literacy. Based on four studies, patients with lower health literacy levels were less likely to adhere to tuberculosis treatment regimens (pooled odds ratio: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.37-2.78). Three studies showed a significant relationship between low health literacy and inadequate knowledge about tuberculosis (pooled correlation coefficient: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.32-0.94).
CONCLUSION
Health literacy is associated with tuberculosis treatment adherence and care quality. Lower health literacy might hamper patients' ability to follow treatment protocols. Improving health literacy is crucial for enhancing treatment outcomes and is a key strategy in the fight against tuberculosis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively evaluate the factors associated with mortality and progressive disease in NTM-LD patients. We conducted a literature search to identify the eligible studies, dated between January 1, 2007, and April 12, 2021. Forty-one studies with total 10,452 patients were included. The overall all-cause mortality rate was 20% (95% CI 17-24%). The overall rates of clinical and radiographic progressive disease were 46% (95% CI 39-53%) and 43% (95% CI 31-55%), respectively. Older age, male sex, history of TB, diabetes, chronic heart disease, malignancy, systemic immunosuppression, chronic liver disease, presence of cavity, consolidative radiologic features, acid-fast bacillus (AFB) smear positivity, hypoalbuminemia, anemia, increasing platelet count, high CRP, and high ESR were significantly associated with increased all-cause mortality, whereas increasing body mass index (BMI), hemoptysis, and treatment with rifamycin regimen (in M. xenopi) were significantly associated with decreased all-cause mortality in multivariable analysis. History of TB, Aspergillus co-infection, cough, increased sputum, weight loss, presence of cavity, and AFB smear positivity were significantly associated with increased clinical progression with treatment, while older age and low BMI were significantly associated with decreased clinical progression in multivariable analysis. Older age, interstitial lung disease, presence of cavity, consolidative radiologic feature, anemia, high CRP, and leukocytosis were significantly associated with increased radiographic progression after adjusting for covariates. Older age, history of tuberculosis, presence of cavity, consolidative radiologic features, AFB smear positivity, anemia, and high C-reactive protein were common significant factors associated with the all-cause mortality and clinical or radiographic progressive disease of NTM-LD. These factors are thought to directly affect NTM-LD related mortality. The future prediction models for the prognosis of NTM-LD should be established considering these factors.

BACKGROUND
Tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 co-infection poses a significant global health challenge with increased fatality rates and adverse outcomes. However, the existing evidence on the epidemiology and treatment of TB-COVID co-infection remains limited.
METHODS
This updated systematic review aimed to investigate the prevalence, fatality rates, and treatment outcomes of TB-COVID co-infection. A comprehensive search across six electronic databases spanning November 1, 2019, to January 24, 2023, was conducted. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist assessed risk of bias of included studies, and meta-analysis estimated co-infection fatality rates and relative risk.
RESULTS
From 5,095 studies screened, 17 were included. TB-COVID co-infection prevalence was reported in 38 countries or regions, spanning both high and low TB prevalence areas. Prevalence estimates were approximately 0.06% in West Cape Province, South Africa, and 0.02% in California, USA. Treatment approaches for TB-COVID co-infection displayed minimal evolution since 2021. Converging findings from diverse studies underscored increased hospitalization risks, extended recovery periods, and accelerated mortality compared to single COVID-19 cases. The pooled fatality rate among co-infected patients was 7.1% (95%CI: 4.0% ~ 10.8%), slightly lower than previous estimates. In-hospital co-infected patients faced a mean fatality rate of 11.4% (95%CI: 5.6% ~ 18.8%). The pooled relative risk of in-hospital fatality was 0.8 (95% CI, 0.18-3.68) for TB-COVID patients versus single COVID patients.
CONCLUSION
TB-COVID co-infection is increasingly prevalent worldwide, with fatality rates gradually declining but remaining higher than COVID-19 alone. This underscores the urgency of continued research to understand and address the challenges posed by TB-COVID co-infection.

BACKGROUND
There is lack of consensus on non-tuberculous mycobacteria pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) treatment regimen and duration in patient listed for lung transplantation (LTx). We conducted a systematic review on treatment regimen and duration pre- and directly post-LTx, for patients with known NTM-PD pre-LTx. Additionally, we searched for risk factors for NTM disease development post-LTx and for mortality.
METHODS
Literature was reviewed on PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library, for articles published from inception to January 2022. Individual patient data were sought.
RESULTS
Sixteen studies were included reporting 92 patients. Most frequent used agents were aminoglycosides and macrolides for Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) and macrolides and tuberculostatic agents for Mycobacterium avium complex (M. avium complex). The median treatment duration pre-LTx was 10 months (IQR 6-17) and 2 months (IQR 2-8) directly post-LTx. Longer treatment duration pre-LTx was observed in children and in patients with M. abscessus. 46% of the patients with NTM-PD pre-LTx developed NTM disease post-LTx, related mortality rate was 10%. Longer treatment duration pre-LTx (p < 0.001) and sputum non-conversion pre-LTx (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with development of NTM-disease post-LTx. Longer treatment duration pre-LTx (p = 0.004), younger age (p < 0.001) and sputum non-conversion (p = 0.044) were risk factors for NTM related death.
CONCLUSIONS
The median treatment duration pre-LTx was 10 months (IQR 6-17) and 2 months (IQR 2-8) directly post-LTx. Patients with longer treatment duration for NTM-PD pre-LTx and with sputum non-conversion are at risk for NTM disease post-LTx and for NTM-related death. Children were particularly at risk for NTM related death.

OBJECTIVES
Co-occurrence of tuberculosis (TB) with other chronic conditions (TB multimorbidity) increases complexity of management and adversely affects health outcomes. We aimed to map the prevalence of the co-occurrence of one or more chronic conditions in people with TB and associated health risks by systematically reviewing previously published systematic reviews.
DESIGN
Systematic review of systematic reviews (meta-review).
SETTING
Low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).
PAPERS
We searched in Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index, Emerging Sources Citation Index and Conference Proceedings Citation Index, and the WHO Global Index Medicus from inception to 23 October 2020, contacted authors and reviewed reference lists. Pairs of independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts and full texts, extracted data and assessed the included reviews' quality (AMSTAR2). We included systematic reviews reporting data for people in LMICs with TB multimorbidity and synthesised them narratively. We excluded reviews focused on children or specific subgroups (eg, incarcerated people).
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES
Prevalence or risk of TB multimorbidity (primary); any measure of burden of disease (secondary).
RESULTS
From the 7557 search results, 54 were included, representing >6 296 000 people with TB. We found that the most prevalent conditions in people with TB were depression (45.19%, 95% CI: 38.04% to 52.55%, 25 studies, 4903 participants, I=96.28%, high quality), HIV (31.81%, 95% CI: 27.83% to 36.07%, 68 studies, 62 696 participants, I=98%, high quality) and diabetes mellitus (17.7%, 95% CI: 15.1% to 20.0.5%, 48 studies, 48,036 participants, I=98.3%, critically low quality).
CONCLUSIONS
We identified several chronic conditions that co-occur in a significant proportion of people with TB. Although limited by varying quality and gaps in the literature, this first meta-review of TB multimorbidity highlights the magnitude of additional ill health burden due to chronic conditions on people with TB.
