OBJECTIVE
DNA methylation influences gene expression and function in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Mapping of T2DM-associated DNA methylation could aid early detection and/or therapeutic treatment options for diabetics.
DESIGN
A systematic literature search for associations between T2DM and DNA methylation was performed. Prospero registration ID: CRD42020140436.
METHODS
PubMed and ScienceDirect databases were searched (till October 19, 2023). Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and New Castle Ottawa scale were used for reporting the selection and quality of the studies, respectively.
RESULT
Thirty-two articles were selected. Four of 130 differentially methylated genes in blood, adipose, liver or pancreatic islets (TXNIP, ABCG1, PPARGC1A, PTPRN2) were reported in > 1 study. TXNIP was hypomethylated in diabetic blood across ethnicities. Gene enrichment analysis of the differentially methylated genes highlighted relevant disease pathways (T2DM, type 1 diabetes and adipocytokine signaling). Three prospective studies reported association of methylation in IGFBP2, MSI2, FTO, TXNIP, SREBF1, PHOSPHO1, SOCS3 and ABCG1 in blood at baseline with incident T2DM/hyperglycemia. Sex-specific differential methylation was reported only for HOOK2 in visceral adipose tissue (female diabetics: hypermethylated, male diabetics: hypomethylated). Gene expression was inversely associated with methylation status in 8 studies, in genes including ABCG1 (blood), S100A4 (adipose tissue), PER2 (pancreatic islets), PDGFA (liver) and PPARGC1A (skeletal muscle).
CONCLUSION
This review summarizes available evidence for using DNA methylation patterns to unravel T2DM pathophysiology. Further validation studies in diverse populations will set the stage for utilizing this knowledge for identifying early diagnostic markers and novel druggable pathways.

BACKGROUND AND AIM
Some studies reported a positive link between familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and epicardial adipose tissue. Our meta-analysis aimed to evaluate whether there is a significant association between FMF and increased epicardial adipose tissue thickness.
METHODS
We searched the following databases: PUBMED, WOS, OVID, SCOPUS, and EMBASE. Inclusion criteria were any original articles that reported epicardial adipose tissue in FMF patients with no age restriction, excluding reviews, case reports, editorials, animal studies, and non-English studies. Thirty eligible studies were screened full text but only five studies were suitable. We used RevMan software (5.4) for the meta-analysis.
RESULTS
The total number of patients included in the meta-analysis in the FMF patients group is 256 (mean age = 24.3), and the total number in the control group is 188 (mean age = 24.98). The pooled analysis between FMF patients and controls was [mean difference = 0.82 (95% CI = 0.25-1.39), -value = 0.005]. We observed heterogeneity that was not solved by random effects ( > 0.00001). We performed leave one out test by removing the Kozan et al. study, and the heterogeneity was solved ( = 0.07), and the results were (MD = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.52-1.43, -value < 0.0001).
CONCLUSION
FMF patients are at increased risk of developing epicardial adipose tissue compared to controls. More multicenter studies with higher sample sizes are needed to support our results.

Body composition parameters are not captured by measures of body mass, which may explain inconsistent associations between body weight and prostate cancer (PC) risk. The objective of this systematic review was to characterize the association between fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) parameters and PC risk. A search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science identified case-control and cohort studies that measured body composition in relation to PC risk. Methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Thirteen observational studies were included, of which 8 were case-control studies (n = 1572 cases, n = 1937 controls) and 5 were prospective cohort studies (n = 7854 incident cases with PC). The NOS score was 5.9 ± 1.1 for case-control studies and 8.4 ± 1.3 for cohort studies. The most common body composition technique was bioelectrical impedance analysis (n = 9 studies), followed by DXA (n = 2), computed tomography (n = 2), air displacement plethysmography (n = 1), and MRI (n = 1). No case-control studies reported differences in %FM between PC cases and controls and no consistent differences in FM or FFM (in kilograms) were observed. Two out of 5 cohort studies reported that higher %FM was associated with lower PC risk. Conversely, 3 cohort studies reported a greater risk of being diagnosed with advanced/aggressive PC with higher FM (expressed in kilograms, %FM, or fat distribution). Two out of 4 studies (both case-control and cohort) found that higher abdominal adipose tissue was associated with increased PC risk. In conclusion, although results were inconsistent, there is some evidence that FM may be negatively associated with total PC risk but positively associated with the risk of advanced/aggressive PC; modest evidence suggests that abdominal adipose tissue may increase the risk of PC. Future work should elucidate unique patterns of FM distribution and PC risk to triage men at risk for developing PC. BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Systemic inflammatory diseases could act as an unfavorable condition in which epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) becomes harmful to cardiovascular health. The objectives were: (a) to quantitatively compare the presence of EAT between patients with systemic inflammatory diseases and controls; (b) to analyze the association between EAT and subclinical atheromatosis in individuals with systemic inflammatory diseases.
METHODS
Studies that have quantified EAT in a population with systemic inflammatory diseases compared to a control group, or that describe the association between EAT and the presence of subclinical atheromatosis in patients with systemic inflammatory diseases were included. A quantitative analysis was performed for the first objective. This systematic review was performed according to PRISMA guidelines.
RESULTS
Twenty-one studies including 1448 patients with systemic inflammatory diseases, were considered eligible for this study. Patients with systemic inflammatory disease have a higher volume (MD: 10.4cm [1.8-19.1]; p<0.01), higher thickness (MD: 1.0mm [0.8-1.2]; p<0.01), and a statistically non-significant higher area (MD: 3.1cm [1.0-5.2]; p=0.46) of EAT compared to the control group. Most studies reported a significant association between EAT and subclinical atheromatosis in patients with different systemic inflammatory diseases.
CONCLUSION
This study demonstrated that EAT is increased in patients with systemic inflammatory diseases compared with healthy controls, and that EAT measurement is closely correlated with subclinical atherosclerosis in these patients. The causality of this association should be tested in prospective studies.

Current techniques for breast reconstruction include an autologous-tissue flap or an implant-based procedure, although both can impose further morbidity. This systematic review aims to explore the existing literature on breast reconstruction using a tissue engineering approach; conducted with the databases Medline and Embase. A total of 28 articles were included, mainly comprising of level-5 evidence with in vitro and animal studies focusing on utilizing scaffolds to support the migration and growth of new tissue; scaffolds can be either biological or synthetic. Biological scaffolds were composed of collagen or a decellularized tissue matrix scaffold. Synthetic scaffolds were primarily composed of polymers with customisable designs, adjusting the internal morphology and pore size. Implanting cells, including adipose-derived stem cells, with combined use of basic fibroblast growth factor has been studied in an attempt to enhance tissue regeneration. Lately, a level-4 evidence human case series was reported; successfully regenerating 210 mL of tissue using an arterio-venous pedicled fat flap within a tissue engineering chamber implanted on the chest wall. Further research is required to evaluate whether the use of cells and other growth factors could adjust the composition of regenerated tissue and improve vascularity; the latter a major limiting factor for creating larger volumes of tissue.

BACKGROUND
As a product of adipose tissue, resistin exceeds other adipokines in its role in regulating appetite, energy expenditure, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and immunity, similar to thyroid hormones. This study aimed to evaluate the association between resistin levels and thyroid dysfunction and to explore variations in circulating resistin levels before and after treatment for thyroid dysfunction.
METHODS
This study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis statement. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was conducted until June 15, 2022, with no start date restriction, according to the preregistered protocol (PROSPERO-CRD42022336617). RevMan version 5.4 and R software package version 4.2.0 were used for statistical analyses.
RESULTS
Fourteen studies with 1716 participants were included in this study. The findings of the meta-analysis confirmed that the resistin levels of patients with thyroid dysfunction were significantly higher than those of the euthyroid function control group (mean difference [MD] = 2.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.11-3.11, P < 0.00001). Furthermore, the resistin levels of patients with hyperthyroidism (MD = 3.23, 95% CI = 0.68-5.79, P = 0.01) and subclinical hypoidism (MD = 1.37, 95% CI = 0.31-2.42, P = 0.01) were significantly higher than those of euthyroid controls. The resistin levels of patients with thyroid dysfunction after treatment were significantly lower than those before treatment (MD = 1.00, 95% CI = 0.34-1.65, P = 0.003), especially in patients with hyperthyroidism (MD = 2.16, 95% CI = 1.00-3.32, P = 0.0003). Correlation analysis confirmed a positive correlation between resistin levels and free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels in patients with thyroid dysfunction (r = 0.27578, P = 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
Our meta-analysis demonstrates that resistin levels are significantly higher in patients with thyroid dysfunction, and the resistin levels after treatment in patients with thyroid dysfunction are significantly lower than those before treatment. Correlation analysis shows a positive correlation between resistin levels and FT3 levels in patients with thyroid dysfunction.

The treatment of microtia or acquired ear deformities by surgery is a significant challenge for plastic and ENT surgeons; one of the most difficult points is constructing the scaffold for auricular reconstruction. As a type of cell with multiple differentiation potentials, stem cells play an essential role in the construction of cartilage scaffolds, and therefore have received widespread attention in ear reconstructive research. A literature search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles between 2005 and 2023 with the following keywords: stem cells; auricular cartilage; ear cartilage; conchal cartilage; auricular reconstruction, regeneration, and reparation of chondrocytes; tissue engineering in the following databases: PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Ovid. Thirty-three research articles were finally selected and their main characteristics were summarized. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs), bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs), perichondrial stem/progenitor cells (PPCs), and cartilage stem/progenitor cells (CSPCs) were mainly used in chondrocyte regeneration. Injecting the stem cells into the cartilage niche directly, co-culturing the stem cells with the auricular cartilage cells, and inducing the cells in the chondrogenic medium were the main methods that have been demonstrated in the studies. The chondrogenic ability of these cells was observed , and they also maintained good elasticity and morphology after implantation for a period of time. ADSC, BMMSC, PPC, and CSPC were the main stem cells that have been researched in craniofacial cartilage reconstruction, the regenerative cartilage performed highly similar to normal cartilage, and the test of AGA and type II collagen content also proved the cartilage property of the neo-cartilage. However, stem cell reconstruction of the auricle is still in the initial stage of animal experiments, transplantation with such scaffolds in large animals is still lacking, and there is still a long way to go.

BACKGROUND
Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) plays an important role in cardiometabolic risk. EAT is a modifiable risk factor and could be a potential therapeutic target for drugs that already show cardiovascular benefits. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of cardiometabolic drugs on EAT reduction.
METHODS
A detailed search related to the effect on EAT reduction due to cardiometabolic drugs, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA), sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2-i), and statins was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Eighteen studies enrolling 1064 patients were included in the qualitative and quantitative analyses.
RESULTS
All three analyzed drug classes, in particular GLP-1 RA, show a significant effect on EAT reduction (GLP-1 RA standardize mean difference (SMD) = - 1.005; p < 0.001; SGLT2-i SMD = - 0.552; p < 0.001, and statin SMD = - 0.195; p < 0.001). The sensitivity analysis showed that cardiometabolic drugs strongly benefit EAT thickness reduction, measured by ultrasound (overall SMD of - 0.663; 95%CI - 0.79, - 0.52; p < 0.001). Meta-regression analysis revealed younger age and higher BMI as significant effect modifiers of the association between cardiometabolic drugs and EAT reduction for both composite effect and effect on EAT thickness, (age Z: 3.99; p < 0.001 and Z: 1.97; p = 0.001, respectively; BMI Z: - 4.40; p < 0.001 and Z: - 2.85; p = 0.004, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS
Cardiometabolic drugs show a significant beneficial effect on EAT reduction. GLP-1 RA was more effective than SGLT2-i, while statins had a rather mild effect. We believe that the most effective treatment with these drugs should target younger patients with high BMI.

Obesity is characterized by an adipose tissue mass expansion that presents a risk to health, associated with a chronic increase in circulating inflammatory mediators. Anti-inflammatory agents are an obesity alternative treatment. However, the lack of effective agents indicates the need to assess the mechanisms and identify effective therapeutic targets. The present work identified and described the mechanisms of action of anti-inflammatory agents in adipose tissue in experimental studies. The review was registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO-CRD42020182897). The articles' selection was according to eligibility criteria (PICOS). The research was performed in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, VHL, and EMBASE. The methodological quality evaluation was assessed using SYRCLE. Initially, 1511 articles were selected, and at the end of the assessment, 41 were eligible. Among the anti-inflammatory agent classes, eight drugs, 28 natural, and five synthetic compounds were identified. Many of these anti-inflammatory agents act in metabolic pathways that culminate in the inflammatory cytokines expression reduction, decreasing the macrophages infiltration in white and adipose tissue and promoting the polarization process of type M1 to M2 macrophages. Thus, the article clarifies and systematizes these anti-inflammatory agents' mechanisms in adipose tissue, presenting targets relevant to future research on these pathways.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Free Triiodothyronine (FT3) Levels in Humans Depending on Seasonal Air Temperature Changes: Is the Variation in FT3 Levels Related to Nonshivering Thermogenesis?
Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating normal development, growth, and metabolic function. However, the controversy surrounding seasonal changes in free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels remains unresolved. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of variations in FT3 levels in relation to seasonal air temperatures in the context of current knowledge about its role in nonshivering thermogenesis. Ten eligible articles with a total of 336,755 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The studies were categorized into two groups based on the air temperature: "Cold winter", where the winter temperature fell below 0 °C, and "Warm winter", where the winter temperature was above 0 °C. The analysis revealed that in cold regions, FT3 levels decreased in winter compared to summer (I = 57%, < 0.001), whereas in warm regions, FT3 levels increased during winter (I = 28%, < 0.001). These findings suggest that seasonal variations in FT3 levels are likely to be influenced by the winter temperature. Considering the important role of the FT3 in the nonshivering thermogenesis process, we assume that this observed pattern is probably related to the differences in use of thyroid hormones in the brown adipose tissue during adaptive thermogenesis, which may depend on intensity of cold exposure.
