To reveal optimal antibiotic prophylactic regimen for postoperative endophthalmitis (POE), we conducted systematic review and network meta-analysis. A total of 51 eligible original articles, including two randomized controlled trials, were identified. In total, 4502 POE cases occurred in 6,809,732 eyes (0.066%). Intracameral injection of vancomycin had the best preventive effect (odds ratio [OR] 0.03, 99.6% confidence interval [CI] 0.00-0.53, corrected P-value = 0.006, P-score = 0.945) followed by intracameral injection of cefazoline (OR 0.09, 99.6% CI 0.02-0.42, corrected P-value < 0.001, P-score = 0.821), cefuroxime (OR 0.18, 99.6% CI 0.09-0.35, corrected P-value < 0.001, P-score = 0.660), and moxifloxacin (OR 0.36, 99.6% CI 0.16-0.79, corrected P-value = 0.003, P-score = 0.455). While one randomized controlled trial supported each of intracameral cefuroxime and moxifloxacin, no randomized controlled trial evaluated vancomycin and cefazoline. Sensitivity analysis focusing on the administration route revealed that only intracameral injection (OR 0.19, 99.4% CI 0.12-0.30, corrected P-value < 0.001, P-score = 0.726) significantly decreased the risk of postoperative endophthalmitis. In conclusion, intracameral injection of either vancomycin, cefazoline, cefuroxime, or moxifloxacin prevented POE.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common endocrine disorders to occur during pregnancy due to the increase in circulating human placental lactogen (hPL) and possible beta-cell sensitivity. While GDM can be managed either with diet and exercise or pharmacological interventions, it is associated with significant maternal and neonatal complications. Maternal complications include short- and long-term conditions such as pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, arrest of labor, future development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cardiovascular disorders. Neonates can develop hypoglycemia and hypocalcemia and have a large gestational age (LGA). New research has also highlighted another possible long-term complication for both mothers and offspring, which is the development of cancer. Cancer has various types of progression, but most cause systemic symptoms leading to a reduced quality of life. Cancer can be terminal and can affect the majority of the population; thus, significant effort is being employed to try and reduce its occurrence. This systematic review was conducted with adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using PubMed, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest databases. Initially, 136,019 publications were identified. Through the screening process, a total of 27 publications were finalized within the scope of this paper. Most studies observing maternal cancer with a history of GDM found that there was an association between the increased risk of cancer and GDM. Specifically, these studies identified the association of GDM with breast, ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancer, as well as other non-reproductive organs such as the thyroid and pancreas. Cancer development in the offspring also presented an association with mothers who developed GDM. The most prevalent cancer evaluated was leukemia, and it was specifically associated with a maternal history of GDM. With the consistent rise in the incidence of cancer, any attempts to reduce its development are imperative to assess. While GDM is essentially a temporary condition that resolves following pregnancy in most patients, the possibility of contributing to future conditions years after its occurrence creates a sense of urgency and necessity to reduce the incidence of GDM. Researchers should be able to identify other unknown biomarkers that contribute to the development of cancer in mothers who experienced GDM as well as their infants.

BACKGROUND
Refractive errors are one of the most common ocular conditions among children and adolescents, with myopia showing an increasing prevalence and early onset in this population. Recent studies have identified a correlation between refractive errors and ocular biometric parameters.
METHODS
A systematic search was conducted in electronic databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Medline from January 1, 2012, to May 1, 2023. Various ocular biometric parameters were summarized under different refractive states, including axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), corneal curvature (CC), Corneal curvature radius (CR),axial length-to-corneal radius ratio (AL/CR ratio), choroidal thickness (ChT), retinal thickness (RT), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL), and retinal blood density (VD). The differences in these parameters among different refractive states were analyzed using Stata software with fixed or random-effects models, taking into account the assessed heterogeneity level.
RESULTS
This meta-analysis included a total of 69 studies involving 128,178 eyes, including 48,795 emmetropic eyes, 60,691 myopic eyes, 13,983 hyperopic eyes, 2,040 low myopic eyes, 1,201 moderate myopic eyes, and 1,468 high myopic eyes. The results of our study demonstrated that, compared to the control group (emmetropic group), the myopic group and low, moderate, and high myopic groups showed significant increases in AL, AL/CR ratio, and ACD, while the hyperopic group exhibited significant decreases. Compared to the control group, the myopic group had a significantly increase for CC, while CR, CCT, perifoveal RT, subfoveal ChT, foveal ChT, parafoveal ChT, perifoveal (except nasal) ChT, and pRNFL (except temporal) significantly decreased. Compared to the control group, the hyperopic group had a significantly increase for subfoveal ChT, foveal ChT, parafoveal ChT, perifoveal ChT, and nasal pRNFL. Compared to the control group, the low and moderate myopic groups had a significantly decreases for the CCT, parafoveal RT (except nasal), perifoveal RT (except nasal), and pRNFL (except superior and temporal). Compared to the control group, the high myopic group had a significantly increase for CR, while LT, perifoveal ChT (except nasal), parafoveal RT, perifoveal RT, and pRNFL (except temporal) had significant decreased.
CONCLUSION
The changes of ocular biometric parameters in children and adolescents are closely related to refractive errors. Ocular biometric parameters devices, as effective non-invasive techniques, provide objective biological markers for monitoring refractive errors such as myopia.

BACKGROUND
Previous studies proposed possible applications of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) measurements in prognosticating pathologies observed in overweight/obesity, including ocular, vascular, and neurologic consequences. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the changes in the in SD-OCT measurements of the patients with higher body mass index (BMI) compared to normal weight individuals.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We conducted a systematic search on PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. The search results underwent two-phase title/abstract and full-text screenings. We then analyzed SD-OCT measurements differences in patients with high BMI and controls, and performed meta-regression, sub-group analysis, quality assessment, and publication bias assessment. The measurements included macular thickness, cup to disc ratio, ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) and its sub-sectors, RNFL and peripapillary RNFL (pRNFL) and their sub-layers, and choroidal thickness and its sub-sectors.
RESULTS
19 studies were included in this meta-analysis accounting for 1813 individuals, 989 cases and 824 controls. There was an overall trend towards decreased thickness in high BMI patients, but only two measurements reached statistical significance: temporal retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) (Standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.33, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.53 to -0.14, p<0.01) and the choroidal region 1.0 mm nasal to fovea (SMD: -0.38, 95% CI: -0.60 to -0.16, p<0.01).
CONCLUSION
Some ocular layers are thinner in patients with higher BMI than the controls. These SD-OCT measurements might correlate with adverse events related to increased body weight and have prognostic abilities. As SD-OCT is a robust, rapid and non-invasive tool, future guidelines and studies are needed to evaluate the possibility of their integration into care of the patients with obesity.

Aetiological processes of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) remains poorly understood, but several studies indicate that immunity may play a role and report elevated levels of systemic C-reactive protein (CRP). In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we summarize available evidence in the field. We searched the databases PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and the Cochrane Central on 19 March 2020. Two independent authors reviewed the studies and extracted data. Two independent authors reviewed the studies, extracted data and evaluated risk of bias within individual studies. Studies were reviewed in the text qualitatively and measures of association were included for quantitative analyses. Results from univariate analyses and multivariate-adjusted analyses were included for separate meta-analyses to evaluate whether the association was only due to factors associated with PCV. Four studies (246 patients with PCV and 2861 control individuals) were identified and included for a qualitative and quantitative analysis. Increased CRP was associated with PCV when pooling both univariate measures (OR 3.54, 95% CI: 2.13-5.89, p < 0.0001) and multivariate-adjusted measures (OR 3.05, 95% CI: 1.56-5.98, p = 0.0011). Sensitivity analyses confirmed robustness of the results. Increased CRP is associated to PCV, even after adjusting for demographics, lifestyle factors and co-morbidities. Clinical value of CRP in relation to PCV remains unclear, but the association gives much needed insight into the aetiology of a poorly understood disease.

INTRODUCTION
Leukoplakia is a precancerous lesion considered to be within the spectrum of histopathological results from parakeratosis, through stages of dysplasia to invasive cancer. Narrow band imaging (NBI) endoscopy has been introduced to improve early diagnosis of benign and malignant laryngeal lesions. The aim of this literature review was to evaluate the accuracy of preoperative evaluation of vocal fold leukoplakia with NBI endoscopy in comparison with histology.
METHODS
A systematic review of the literature was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, using 3 different databases: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. The included articles in the systematic review were identified combining each of the following terms: "narrow band imaging" OR "NBI," [AND] with each of these terms: "laryngeal leukoplakia," OR "vocal fold leukoplakia," OR "vocal cord leukoplakia."
RESULTS
The articles that fully met the inclusion criteria were 5 case series, conducted between January 2010 and February 2018, and published between 2017 and 2019. The selected articles included 312 patients (86% males and 14% females), affected by 382 vocal cord leukoplakia, evaluated with NBI endoscopy and that underwent surgical microlaryngoscopy with biopsy. Based on the studies included in the review, accuracy of NBI in predicting malignancy within leukoplakia ranged from 81% to 97.8%, demonstrating to be an accurate method to predict the risk of malignant transformation of vocal fold leukoplakia.
CONCLUSION
Narrow band imaging can help otolaryngologists in the decision-making process on the necessity to perform a biopsy and transoral surgery or long-term follow-up. Larger studies are necessary to confirm the high association of NBI evaluation of the epithelium surrounding the leukoplakia with the histological diagnosis.

PURPOSE
Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Retinal ganglion cells (RGC), the neurons that connect the eyes to the brain, specifically die in glaucoma, leading to blindness. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only modifiable risk factor, however, many patients progress despite excellent IOP control. Thus, alternative treatment strategies to prevent glaucoma progression are an unmet need. Citicoline has demonstrated neuroprotective properties in central neurodegenerative diseases. However, conclusive evidence of the effect of citicoline on glaucoma progression is missing. This systematic review investigates first-time the therapeutic potential of citicoline in glaucoma patients.
METHODS
The present study was conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 statement. PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Embase were accessed in July 2023 to identify all clinical studies investigating the efficacy of citicoline on IOP, the mean deviation of the 24-2 visual field testing (MD 24-2), retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL), and the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) P50-N95 amplitude in glaucoma patients. The risk of bias was assessed using the Review Manager 5.3 software (The Nordic Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen) and the Risk of Bias in Non-randomised Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool.
RESULTS
Ten studies were eligible for this systematic review, including 424 patients. The mean length of the follow-up was 12.1 ± 11.6 months. The overall risk of bias was low to moderate. The mean age of the patients was 56.7 years. There were no significant differences in the IOP, MD 24-2, RNFL, or PERG P50-N95 amplitude between patients receiving citicoline and the control group. There was no improvement from baseline to the last follow-up in IOP, MD 24-2, RNFL, or PERG P50-N95 amplitude.
CONCLUSION
There is a lack of sufficient evidence to support that citicoline slows the progression of glaucoma.

Iris-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) is considered a safe and effective option for the correction of aphakia in patients with insufficient capsular support. This systematic review aims to summarize the existing evidence about the Artisan/Verisyse IOLs and to assess the influence of the IOL position on the postoperative outcomes. Three different databases were used for this systematic review and metaanalysis (PubMED, Scopus, and Embase). We searched for case series or clinical trials comparing the prepupillary versus retropupillary Artisan/Verisyse implantation. The statistical analysis was performed with the programming language R (version 3.6.1 2019-07-05). The number of articles included in the meta-analysis was six, with 506 eyes included in total. We found no significant differences in postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) (0.309 [0.089-0.528] vs. 0.32 [0.2-0.44]), spherical equivalent (SE) (0.0153 D [-0.362 to 0.393] vs. -0.329 D [-0.62 to - 0.038]), and central corneal cell density (CECD) (1669.85 cells [1605.949-2150.937] vs. 1635.99 cells [1413.64-1858.363]) between the prepupillary and the retropupillary implantation, respectively. There were no significant differences in the rates of cystoid macular edema (CME; 7.70% vs. 9.8%), pupil deformation (4.5% vs. 5.4% retropupillary), or IOL luxation (2.3% and 2.2%). We found little influence of the IOL position in the postoperative analyzed outcomes. Thus, the implant position should be based on the surgeon's technical experience. Double-blind randomized prospective studies would improve the available evidence on the best implant position for the Artisan/Verisyse IOL.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Recent literature on multiple sclerosis (MS) demonstrates the growing implementation of optical coherence tomography-angiography (OCT-A) to discover potential qualitative and quantitative changes in the retina and optic nerve. In this review, we analyze OCT-A studies in patients with MS and examine its utility as a surrogate or precursor to changes in central nervous system tissue.
METHODS
PubMed and EMBASE were systematically searched to identify articles that applied OCT-A to evaluate the retinal microvasculature measurements in patients with MS. Quantitative data synthesis was performed on all measurements which were evaluated in at least two unique studies with the same OCT-A devices, software, and study population compared to controls. A fixed-effects or random-effects model was applied for the meta-analysis based on the heterogeneity level.
RESULTS
The study selection process yielded the inclusion of 18 studies with a total of 1552 evaluated eyes in 673 MS-associated optic neuritis (MSON) eyes, 741 MS without optic neuritis (MSNON eyes), and 138 eyes without specification for the presence of optic neuritis (ON) in addition to 1107 healthy control (HC) eyes. Results indicated that MS cases had significantly decreased whole image superficial capillary plexus (SCP) vessel density when compared to healthy control subjects in the analyses conducted on Optovue and Topcon studies (both P < 0.0001). Likewise, the whole image vessel densities of deep capillary plexus (DCP) and radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) were significantly lower in MS cases compared to HC (all P < 0.05). Regarding optic disc area quadrants, MSON eyes had significantly decreased mean RPC vessel density compared to MSNON eyes in all quadrants except for the inferior (all P < 0.05). Results of the analysis of studies that used prototype Axsun machine revealed that MSON and MSNON eyes both had significantly lower ONH flow index compared to HC (both P < 0.0001).
CONCLUSIONS
This systematic review and meta-analysis of the studies reporting OCT-A measurements of people with MS confirmed the tendency of MS eyes to exhibit reduced vessel density in the macular and optic disc areas, mainly in SCP, DCP, and RPC vessel densities.

Humans rely on vision as their most important sense. This is accomplished by photoreceptors (PRs) in the retina that detect light but cannot function without the support and maintenance of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). In subretinal hemorrhage (SRH), blood accumulates between the neurosensory retina and the RPE or between the RPE and the choroid. Blood breakdown products subsequently damage PRs and the RPE and lead to poor vision and blindness. Hence, there is a high need for options to preserve the retina and visual functions. We conducted a systematic review of the literature in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to identify the cell death mechanisms in RPE and PRs after SRH to deepen our understanding of the pathways involved. After screening 736 publications published until November 8, 2022, we identified 19 records that assessed cell death in PRs and/or RPE in experimental models of SRH. Among the different cell death mechanisms, apoptosis was the most widely investigated mechanism (11 records), followed by ferroptosis (4), whereas necroptosis, pyroptosis, and lysosome-dependent cell death were only assessed in one study each. We discuss different therapeutic options that were assessed in these studies, including the removal of the hematoma/iron chelation, cytoprotection, anti-inflammatory agents, and antioxidants. Further systematic investigations will be necessary to determine the exact cell death mechanisms after SRH with respect to different blood breakdown components, cell types, and time courses. This will form the basis for the development of novel treatment options for SRH.
