BACKGROUND
The aim of this study was to describe the complications and survival rates of dental implants placed in patients suffering from oral lichen planus (OLP) and to present recommendations for implant treatment in this group of patients through a narrative review of the published studies.
METHODS
A search of the literature was conducted using four databases: PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus with a stop date of May 2022.
RESULTS
Eighteen studies were evaluated. The results showed that dental implant survival rates in patients with OLP were similar to those reported in the general population. Moreover, the existing literature seemed to imply that OLP is not a suspected risk factor for peri-implant diseases. However, patients suffering from erosive forms of OLP or desquamative gingivitis and poor oral hygiene were more susceptible to developing peri-implant diseases; in addition, oral squamous cell carcinoma was observed in a few cases of OLP.
CONCLUSION
With the limitations of this narrative review, dental implants may be regarded as a safe and feasible therapeutic approach to the treatment of patients with well-controlled OLP. These patients should be monitored carefully during follow-up care. Well-designed prospective trials are required to validate the present findings.

In this narrative review, a structured comparison between one-piece and two-piece zirconia dental implants is highlighted. Ceramic dental implants have long ceased to be hype; on the contrary, they can offer a significant addition to the daily dental implant practice. Not only do their favourable aesthetics play a significant role, but their ability to work completely metal-free is of added value, particularly for patients with a proven allergy for Grade 5 titanium. Furthermore, the fact that peri-implantitis seems to appear only incidentally is an important supporting argument for their use as well. Whereas the original design of zirconia implants was formerly always of a one-piece/one-phase structure (the monobloc design), nowadays, two-piece/two-phase designs (the so-called hybrid concept) are also widely utilised to restore missing teeth. Both concepts have advantages and disadvantages, scientifically as well as clinically.For this paper, relevant articles from the recent scientific literature were selected from PubMed. The aim was to identify and summarise what has previously been published on one-piece versus two-piece ceramic implants. This article will compare the benefits and drawbacks of one-piece versus two-piece ceramic implants based on clinical- (design, different sizes, surgical protocol, prosthetics), scientific- (loading and eventual complications) and patient-related (costs and long-time perspectives) criteria.

This study investigated two artificial intelligence (AI) methods for automatically classifying dental implant diameter and length based on periapical radiographs. The first method, deep learning (DL), involved utilizing the pre-trained VGG16 model and adjusting the fine-tuning degree to analyze image data obtained from periapical radiographs. The second method, clustering analysis, was accomplished by analyzing the implant-specific feature vector derived from three key points coordinates of the dental implant using the k-means++ algorithm and adjusting the weight of the feature vector. DL and clustering model classified dental implant size into nine groups. The performance metrics of AI models were accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F1-score, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC). The final DL model yielded performances above 0.994, 0.950, 0.994, 0.974, 0.952, 0.994, and 0.975, respectively, and the final clustering model yielded performances above 0.983, 0.900, 0.988, 0.923, 0.909, 0.988, and 0.947, respectively. When comparing the AI model before tuning and the final AI model, statistically significant performance improvements were observed in six out of nine groups for DL models and four out of nine groups for clustering models based on AUC-ROC. Two AI models showed reliable classification performances. For clinical applications, AI models require validation on various multicenter data.

Peri-implant mucositis is a common inflammatory lesion of the soft tissues surrounding endosseous implants, with no loss of the supporting bone. Its prevention or early diagnosis are vital for dental implant success.The aim of this review was to investigate knowledge strengths and gaps in clinicians' perceptions of periimplant mucositis prevalence and evidence for successful treatment.A literature search for articles published until 2020, reporting on the prevalence of peri-implant mucositis and its treatment was performed in standard online databases. The inclusion criteria were as follows: studies in English; studies with an available abstract; studies on humans with at least 1 dental implant; and studies reporting on the prevalence and/or treatment of peri-implant mucositis. Sixty-five studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The included papers were analyzed to identify data on the prevalence and treatment of peri-implant mucositis. The prevalence statistics for peri-implant mucositis had wide ranges in both the patient-based (PB) analysis and the implant-based (IB) analysis; the possible reasons for these wide ranges are discussed. Treatment methods for peri-implant mucositis were analyzed individually and compared to the management of gingivitis.It was determined that the currently available information on the prevalence rates and the standardized therapeutic protocols for peri-implant mucositis are insufficient. Since the mean gingivitis and peri-implant mucositis prevalence rates in the PB analysis were similar, it is possible that peri-implant mucositis is underestimated due to variables related to implant rehabilitation itself.

OBJECTIVES
To study the oxide layer stability of certified dental implants of system "P", made based on TiO alloy with carbon coating. To perform a comparative statistical analysis of the obtained data with the available data for the dental implants of systems "A" and "B".
METHODS
X-ray microtomography and X-ray fluorescence analysis were used to study soft tissue biopsy specimens. Supernatants were studied by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy when simulating free emission of nanoscale metal oxide particles from the surface of dental implants as well as when simulating physical loading. A comparative analysis of three parameters of nanoscale particles was performed by statistical data analysis. The surface of the "P" system dental implant with surface treatment was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.
RESULTS
Both free emission of nanoscale oxide layer particles and yield of nano- and microscale particles during simulation of physical load were confirmed. Statistically significant differences were noted in a comparative analysis of the size and frequency of occurrence of these particles in the supernatants obtained from the surfaces of three dental implant systems. The elemental composition of the particles and the composition and structure of the "P" system dental implants themselves were analyzed.
SIGNIFICANCE
The developed method of dynamic light scattering can be used to compare the stability of the oxide layer of standardized medical products manufactured on the basis of the TiO alloy.

Purpose Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and resonance frequency analyses (RFA) are promising methods to assess the stability of dental implants. The aim of this in vivo preclinical study is to compare the results obtained with these two techniques with the bone-implant contact (BIC) ratio, which is the gold standard to assess dental implant stability.Methods Twenty-two identical dental implants were inserted in the tibia and femur of 12 rabbits, which were sacrificed after different healing durations (0, 4, 8 and 13 weeks). For each implant, the ultrasonic indicator (UI) and the implant stability quotient (ISQ) were retrieved just before the animal sacrifice using the QUS and RFA techniques, respectively. Histomorphometric analyses were carried out to estimate the bone-implant contact ratio.Results UI values were found to be better correlated to BIC values (R²=0.47) compared to ISQ values (R²=0.39 for measurements in one direction and R²=0.18 for the other direction), which were shown to be dependent on the direction of measurements. Errors realized on the UI were around 3.3 times lower to the ones realized on the ISQ.Conclusions QUS provide a better estimation of dental implant stability compared to RFA. This study paves the way for the future clinical development of a medical device aiming at assessing dental implant stability in a patient-specific manner. Clinical studies should confirm these results in the future.

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) utilizing eggshell membrane (ESM) as a potential biomaterial for dental implant therapy augmentation was explored in this study. ESM, an environmentally friendly waste product, possesses collagen-rich characteristics. The biocompatibility and histological responses of ESM were investigated in a rat model. Twelve young adult Wistar rats were used in this study. ESM samples were implanted in subcutaneous and intramuscular pockets, and samples were collected at 48 hours, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks post-implantation. Histological analysis revealed the changes in ESM over time. Results showed that ESM maintained its structural integrity, induced a moderate cellular response, and exhibited slow degradation, indicating potential biocompatibility. However, the lack of organized collagen arrangement in ESM led to the formation of irregular and polymorphic spaces, allowing cell migration. Encapsulation of ESM by newly proliferating collagen fibers and multinucleated giant cells was observed at later time points, indicating a foreign body reaction. Crosslinking might improve its performance as a separation membrane, as it has the potential to resist enzymatic degradation and enhance biomechanical properties. In conclusion, ESM demonstrated biocompatibility, slow degradation, and lack of foreign body reaction. While not suitable as a complete separation membrane due to irregular collagen arrangement, further research involving crosslinking could enhance its properties, making it a viable option for guided bone regeneration applications in dental implant therapy. This study highlights the potential of repurposing waste materials for medical purposes and underscores the importance of controlled collagen structure in biomaterial development.

The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the survival rate of dental implant placed using different maxillary sinus floor elevation techniques.
SETTING AND DESIGN
PRISMA guidelines were used for this systematic review and meta-analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Relevant articles were searched from Medline, PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane trials. Articles published in English language were selected. Hand search was further conducted. For risk of bias, two tools were used, i.e., Cochrane tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and new castle Ottawa quality assessment tool for non-RCTs.
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
For statistical meta-analysis RevMan 5.4 software was used.
RESULTS
Seventeen studies were finalized. All studies were included in the meta-analysis to check the implant survival rate. There is no statistical difference between direct and indirect techniques, and forest plot was derived for direct approach (P = 0.688, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.9691) and for indirect approach (P = 0.686 and 95% CI 0.970).
CONCLUSION
There is no statistically significant difference in the survival rate of implant placed using direct or indirect sinus lift approach procedures. Hence, the technique is selected as per the indications given for each direct and indirect procedure.

Peri-implant diseases, including peri-implant mucositis (PIM) and peri-implantitis, are a chronic inflammatory disorder triggered by bacterial biofilm in susceptible hosts. Potential risk factors for peri-implant diseases include smoking, dental plaque accumulation, poor oral hygiene, genetics, and absence of peri-implant keratinized mucosa. This cohort study aimed to evaluate the influence of patient-, implant-, and prosthetic-related factors on PIM and peri-implant bone loss (PBL) around dental implants after 1 year of loading. A total of 54 subjects (22 males and 32 females) were included in the study. Peri-implant clinical parameters were assessed and standardized periapical radiographs of each dental implant were obtained 15 days after the definitive prosthesis installation (baseline) and at 3, 6, and 12 months of follow-up. A total of 173 implants were evaluated. PIM affected 44.8% of the implants and no significant association was found between the investigated parameters and PIM incidence, except for type of implant connection. A significantly higher incidence of PIM (80.0%) was observed for implants with internal hexagon connection type after 1 year of follow-up (p = 0.015). Moreover, a mean PBL of 0.35 ± 1.89 mm was observed and no dental implant was affected by peri-implantitis after 1 year of function. No specific influence of patient, implant, or prosthetic factors on PBL was observed. No association was found between the occurrence of PIM/PBL and the patient-, implant-, and prosthetic-related factors investigated in this cohort study, except for the type of dental-implant connection.

Color flow ultrasonography has played a crucial role in medicine for its ability to assess dynamic tissue perfusion and blood flow variations as an indicator of a pathologic condition. While this feature of ultrasound is routinely employed in various medical fields, its intraoral application for the assessment of tissue perfusion at diseased versus healthy dental implants has never been explored. We tested the hypothesis that quantified tissue perfusion of power Doppler ultrasonography correlates with the clinically assessed inflammation of dental implants. Specifically, we designed a discordant-matched case-control study in which patients with nonadjacent dental implants with different clinical diagnoses (healthy, peri-implant mucositis, or peri-implantitis) were scanned and analyzed with real-time ultrasonography. Forty-two posterior implants in 21 patients were included. Ultrasound scans were obtained at the implant regions of midbuccal, mesial/distal (averaged as interproximal), and transverse to compute the velocity- and power-weighted color pixel density from color velocity (CV) and color power (CP), respectively. Linear mixed effect models were then used to assess the relationship between the clinical diagnoses and ultrasound CV and CP. Overall, the results strongly suggested that ultrasound's quantified CV and CP directly correlate with the clinical diagnosis of dental implants at health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis. This study showed for the first time that ultrasound color flow can be applicable in the diagnosis of peri-implant disease and can act as a valuable tool for evaluating the degree of clinical inflammation at implant sites.
