This study achieved maximum removal of ochratoxin A (OTA) during the grape juice clarification process with minimal reduction in antioxidant compounds (phenolic acid, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity by FRAP) by the RSM method. Independent variables included three types of clarifiers-gelatin, bentonite, and diatomite (diatomaceous earth)-at a concentration level of 0.25-0.75% and clarification time of 1-3 h. OTA was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Clarifying agent concentration and clarification time affected the reduction amount of OTA and antioxidant compounds in grape juice. There was a direct linear correlation between the reduction amounts of OTA and antioxidant compounds and capacity with the concentration of bentonite, gelatin, and diatomite, and the clarification time. The reduction amount of OTA and antioxidant capacity followed the linear mode. However, the decreased phenolic acid and flavonoid values followed the quadratic model. The study results showed that if the concentrations of bentonite, gelatin, and diatomite and clarification time were 0.45, 0.62, 0.25%, and 1 h, respectively, the maximum amount of OTA reduction (41.67%) occurred. Furthermore, the phenolic acid, flavonoid, and antioxidant activity decrease amounts were at their lowest levels, i.e., 23.86, 7.20, and 17.27%, respectively.

Improving the In Vitro Removal of Indoxyl Sulfate and p-Cresyl Sulfate by Coating Diatomaceous Earth (DE) and Poly-vinyl-pyrrolidone-co-styrene (PVP-co-S) with Polydopamine.
Polydopamine (PDA) is a synthetic eumelanin polymer mimicking the biopolymer secreted by mussels to attach to surfaces with a high binding strength. It exhibits unique adhesive properties and has recently attracted considerable interest as a multifunctional thin film coating. In this study, we demonstrate that a PDA coating on silica- and polymer-based materials improves the entrapment and retention of uremic toxins produced in specific diseases. The low-cost natural nanotextured fossil diatomaceous earth (DE), an abundant source of mesoporous silica, and polyvinylpyrrolidone-co-Styrene (PVP-co-S), a commercial absorbent comprising polymeric particles, were easily coated with a PDA layer by oxidative polymerization of dopamine at mild basic aqueous conditions. An in-depth chemical-physical investigation of both the resulting PDA-coated materials was performed by SEM, AFM, UV-visible, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Finally, the obtained hybrid systems were successfully tested for the removal of two uremic toxins (indoxyl sulfate and p-cresyl sulfate) directly from patients' sera.

The Time-Concentration-Mortality Responses of Western Flower Thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, to the Synergistic Interaction of Entomopathogenic Fungus Metarhizium flavoviride, Insecticides, and Diatomaceous Earth.
Western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is a highly invasive pest which is harmful to many cash crops globally and resistant to various insecticides. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF), as biological control agents, have demonstrated a good control effect on WFT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the synergistic and pathogenicity efficacy of the fungal strain WSWL51721 when distributed with diatomaceous earth (DE) and the active ingredient imidacloprid using four bioassay methods against adult and second instar larvae of WFT. The data of the four bioassays have been fitted to the time-concentration-mortality (TCM) model. The corrected mortality ranges of WFT adults were 75-100%, 82.69-100%, 78.85-100%, and 92.31-100%, and the corrected mortality ranges of WFT second instar larvae were 72.22-100%, 85.19-100%, 77.77-100%, and 100% in the four bioassays at concentrations of 1.2 × 10 to 1.2 × 10 conidia/mL, respectively. At 1.2 × 10 conidia/mL, assays 2 ( with DE), 3 ( with imidacloprid), and 4 ( with DE and imidacloprid) had the shortest median lethal time (LT), compared with that of assay 1 ( alone) for adults at 2.26 d, 2.06 d, and 1.53 d, and second instar larvae at 2.45 d, 1.70 d, and 1.41 d, respectively. The median lethal concentration (LC) in the four bioassays decreased within 3-10 days of inoculation. On the third day, it was found that the lowest median lethal concentrations in assays 2, 3, and 4 were 1.58 × 10, 1.13 × 10, and 3.39 × 10 conidia/mL, respectively, which were significantly different from that in assay 1 for the adults. For the second instar larvae, assays 2, 3, and 4 also had the lowest lethal concentrations and were significantly different from those of assay 1. There were significant differences in sporulation between adults and second instar larvae under the four bioassays. Our results indicate that assays 2 ( with DE), 3 ( with imidacloprid), and 4 ( with DE and imidacloprid) demonstrate synergistic effects on the control of both adult and second instar larvae of WFT under laboratory conditions.

Efficient hydrogen storage is essential for its use as a sustainable energy carrier. Diatomaceous earth, a high-surface-area siliceous geomaterial, shows potential as a physisorption material for hydrogen storage. This study analyzes diatomaceous earth's long-term characteristics when subjected to high-pressure hydrogen injection. The diatomaceous earth was subjected to a hydrogen pressure of 1200 psi for a period of 80 days at room temperature. Neither notable morphological or mineralogical changes were observed. Nevertheless, there was a slight reduction in fine particles and a slight increase in larger particles. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area decreased slightly with a significant decrease in pore width. However, the hydrogen adsorption at 77 K temperature was increased significantly (45.5%) after the hydrogen storage test. Moreover, there was a delayed release of molecular water as the temperature increased. These changes suggest that a condensation reaction has occurred involving some of the opal-A silanol groups (Si-O-H), producing molecular water. Bonding through siloxane bridges (Si-O-Si) results in a significant decrease in pore width and increased hydrophobicity (i.e., the interaction between diatomaceous surface and H was increased), thereby enhancing hydrogen adsorption capacity. These findings indicate that diatomaceous earth holds promise as a material for hydrogen storage, with the potential for its hydrogen adsorption capacity to improve over time.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) formulations are promising alternatives over the use of traditional insecticides. In the present study, a series of laboratory bioassays was carried out to assess the efficacy of three diatomaceous earth formulations, i.e., Silicid, Celatom MN-23, and SilicoSec, for the control of a wide range of stored-product insect species in soft wheat. The species tested were , , , , , , and . Different dose rates, i.e., 0 (control), 100, 300, 500, and 1000 ppm, were used for each of the aforementioned dust formulations. Mortality levels of the exposed individuals were assessed after 3, 7, 14, and 21 days of exposure. Moreover, progeny were counted 65 days later. Based on our results, dust formulations were effective for the control of most of the stored-product beetle species tested. Among the DE formulations tested, Silicid could adequately control the stored-product insect species. Complete suppression of offspring was observed only for secondary species (, , , and ). For primary species (, , and ), the lowest number of progeny was observed in wheat treated with Silicid. For instance, in the case of , significantly fewer individuals were produced in Silicid-treated wheat at the highest dose rate. The results of the present study aim to encourage the utilization of DE in stored-product protection as an integrated pest management tool. Additional experimentation is required to apply the tested DE formulations in the field and on different surfaces.

A new catalyst, copper oxide/graphene oxide-diatomaceous earth (CuO/GO-DE), was prepared by the ultrasonic impregnation method. The optimal conditions for catalyst preparation were explored, and its structure and morphology were characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, Raman and XPS. By taking ciprofloxacin as the target pollutant, the performance and reusability of CuO/GO-DE to degrade antibiotic wastewater was evaluated, and the optimal operating conditions were obtained. The main oxidizing substances in the catalytic system under different pH conditions were analyzed, as well as the synergistic catalytic oxidation mechanism. The intermediate products of ciprofloxacin degradation were identified by LC-MS, and the possible degradation process of ciprofloxacin was proposed.

Diatomaceous earth are sediments of unicellular algal skeletons with a well-defined hierarchical structure. Despite many tests conducted on systems using diatomaceous earth and epoxy resins, we can find many differences in the methods of acquisition and characteristics of the composite, which may considerably affect the results. In our study, we have conducted tests to verify the impact of the method of obtaining samples and the degassing of the composite on its mechanical properties and standard deviation. The samples were cast in glass moulds and silicone moulds and then subjected to testing for their mechanical and functional properties, imaging with the use of an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The tests have shown that, for samples cast in glass moulds, there is no heterogeneity within the area of the tested sample, as in the case of samples cast in silicone moulds. Silicone moulds allow for quite effective self-degassing of the resin due to the large area-to-mass ratio, and the small remaining air vesicles have a limited effect on the mechanical properties of the samples. The filler used also played a significant role. For systems containing base and rinsed diatomite, it is clear that the degassing of mixtures increases the tensile strength. For treated diatomite, the elongation at break grew along with increasing filler concentration, while for base diatomite, the improvement was observed for flexural strength and impact strength. A non-modified epoxy resin shows a tensile strength at 19.91 MPa (silicone mould cast). At the same time, the degassed, glass mould-cast systems containing 12% of base and rinsed diatoms showed a tensile strength of 27.4 MPa and 44.7 MPa, respectively. We have also observed that the higher the filler concentration, the higher were the tensile strength values, which for the rinsed diatoms reached over 55.1 MPa and for the base diatoms were maximum of 43.8 MPa. The tests, therefore, constitute a set of guidelines and recommendations for testing with the use of fillers showing an extended inner structure.

(MTB) is a communicable disease and still remains a threat to common health. Thus, early diagnosis and treatment are required to prevent the spread of infection. Despite the recent advances in molecular diagnostic systems, the commonly used MTB diagnostic tools are laboratory-based assays, such as mycobacterial culture, MTB PCR, and Xpert MTB/RIF. To address this limitation, point-of-care testing (POCT)-based molecular diagnostic technologies capable of sensitive and accurate detection even in environments with limited sources are needed. In this study, we propose simple tuberculosis (TB) molecular diagnostic assay by combining sample preparation and DNA-detection steps. The sample preparation is performed using a syringe filter with amine-functionalized diatomaceous earth and homobifunctional imidoester. Subsequently, the target DNA is detected by quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction). The results can be obtained within 2 h from samples with large volumes, without any additional instruments. The limit of detection of this system is 10 times higher than those of conventional PCR assays. We validated the clinical utility of the proposed method in 88 sputum samples obtained from four hospitals in the Republic of Korea. Overall, the sensitivity of this system was superior to those of other assays. Therefore, the proposed system can be useful for MTB diagnosis in limited-resource settings.

Dental microwear is used to investigate feeding ecology. Animals ingest geological material in addition to food. The full effect of geological abrasives on tooth wear is unknown. To evaluate mineralogical abrasives as tooth wear agents, rats were fed food manufactured with quartz silt, diatomaceous earth, and calcium carbonate. Rats were assigned to treatments and fed for 15 days. Molars were scanned with a Sensofar Plu Neox confocal microscope and evaluated using ISO-25178-2 parameters and traditional microwear variables using light microscopy. Using a pellet-diet as the control, all treatments had influence on microwear and discriminant function analyses indicated that unique surface textures had been produced. ISO variables with high discriminatory values were correlated to scratch and pit frequencies, but more ISO parameters identified changes associated with numbers of scratches than changes associated with pits. The microwear changes associated with the abrasive inclusions were co-dependent on the type of diet that the abrasives had been added to. The abrasives had less effect with pellets but produced more modified and more differentiated microwear when added to the transgenic dough. Although abrasives produce distinctive surface textures, some knowledge of the properties of food with the abrasives is needed to identify the abrasive agent.

The experience needed to carry out engineering and construction in diatomaceous earth areas is currently lacking. This project studies the new Hang Shaotai high-speed railway passing through a diatomaceous earth area in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province, and analyzes the hydrological and mechanical properties of diatomaceous earth on the basis of a field survey and laboratory. Moreover, a new antidrainage subgrade structure was proposed to address the rainy local environment, and field excitation tests were performed to verify the antidrainage performance and stability of the new subgrade structure. Finally, the dynamic characteristics and deformation of the diatomaceous earth roadbed were examined. The hydrophysical properties of diatomaceous earth in the area are extremely poor, and the disintegration resistance index ranges from 3.1% to 9.0%. The antidrainage subgrade structure has good water resistance and stability under dynamic loading while submerged in water. After 700,000 loading cycles, the dynamic stress and vibration acceleration of the surface of the subgrade bed stabilized at approximately 6.37 kPa and 0.94 m/s, respectively. When the number of excitations reached 2 million, the settlement of the diatomaceous earth foundation was 0.08 mm, and there was basically negligible postwork settlement of the diatomaceous earth foundation. These results provide new insights for engineering construction in diatomaceous earth areas.
