BACKGROUND
gingival/alveolar mucosal reactive hyperplastic lesions (GRHL), including fibrous hyperplasia (FH), pyogenic granuloma (PG), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) and peripheral giant cell lesion (PGCL), are a common group of oral diseases. The aim of the present study was to access the frequency and distribution of the clinical and histological features of these disorders in a Brazilian population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
all specimens diagnosed as GRHL in three Oral Pathology laboratories were selected for the study. Clinical information was retrieved from the laboratory biopsy forms and hematoxylin and eosin stained histological slides were reviewed for analysis of the histological characteristics.
RESULTS
final sample was composed of 996 specimens, including 463 FH (47%), 280 PG (28%), 183 POF (18%) and 70 PGCL (7%). Females were more affected by FH, PG, and POF, and most cases affected adults with mean ages ranging from 40 to 53 years. FH, PG, and POF were more common in the upper gingiva/alveolar mucosa. Most PG, POF and PGCL were pedunculated, in contrast with FH (p<0.001). PG, FH and POF were mostly red or normal mucosal in color, while PGCL were mostly red/purple (p<0.001). PGCL were larger, followed by POF, FH and PG (p<0.001). Some histological features were characteristically found in some conditions, but they were also encountered in other lesions with variable frequencies.
CONCLUSIONS
Oral medicine specialists, oral pathologists and periodontists are usually the professionals in contact with patients presenting GRHL and it is of upmost relevance that they should be familiarized with their clinical and histological profile.

Review
BACKGROUND
Nuchal-type fibroma is a rare benign tumor arising from the connective tissue. Our aim was to present our experience via two cases of this tumor and a comprehensive review of the literature.
PATIENTS AND METHODS
We report a case of a 23-year-old female with a mass located in the posterior neck and the upper back and a case of a 50-year-old male with a mass located in the posterior neck, which were proved to be nuchal-type fibromas in the histopathological examination. We also searched the PubMed/Medline database for published cases of nuchal-type fibromas.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Nuchal-type fibroma is a rare benign tumor arising from the connective tissue, usually in the posterior neck, which affects different ages, with most patients being male. It is a poorly circumscribed tumor consisting of hypocellular, thick, dense and haphazardly arranged collagen bundles with entrapped adipocytes, nerve fibers and muscle fascicles and a few scattered spindle cells, which are CD34 positive. Its excision is curative, and the recurrence risk is generally low. However, patients with Gardner's syndrome may experience recurrence more frequently.
CONCLUSION
Nuchal-type fibroma should be included in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous, soft-tissue masses, especially when these involve the posterior neck.

BACKGROUND
Primary care physicians encounter many patients who present with lumps and bumps on their fingers, hands, and wrists. Some benign lesions including ganglion cysts, epidermal inclusion cysts, and giant cell tumors of the tendon sheath that are benign and can be managed by primary care clinicians most of the time in an outpatient setting.
METHODS
We conducted a narrative of review of literature on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, prognosis, and management of common types of lumps and bumps found on the fingers, hand, and wrist.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the literature review and our clinical practice, we provide indications for referral to plastic surgeons or other specialists for these lesions.

A 9-year-old castrated male pitbull dog was presented for evaluation of a subconjunctival swelling of 10 days duration. On ophthalmic examination, a subcutaneous mass was identified at the right lateral canthus. An excisional biopsy was performed, and histopathological analysis confirmed a diagnosis of a subcutaneous fibroma. Eleven months after surgical excision, the dog had no evidence of recurrence. Fibroma should be included in the differential diagnosis of rapidly enlarging eyelid masses.

Palpable tumors in children are a common reason for consulting a radiologist. The origin of these lesions varies widely, and although they are common, classic radiology books do not cover some of them. This series of two articles aims to review the clinical and radiological characteristics of a selection of palpable tumors in children that radiologists need to be familiar with.

BACKGROUND
Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws and craniofacial bones. Accurate diagnosis can be challenging due to significant overlap of clinicopathological features. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical, radiological and histological features that can aid in diagnosis and identify characteristics that allow categorisation into the three subtypes: juvenile trabecular, psammomatoid and cemento-ossifying OF.
METHODS
A total of 74 cases of OF were systematically reviewed for their principle features. Of these, 46 cases were evaluated for their radiographic features including size, location and relationship to the teeth. Histological assessment and stereological point counting were performed in 69 cases to assess the pattern, type and proportion of calcification, the nature of the stroma, the border of the lesion and the presence of secondary changes. Fisher's exact test and Chi-squared tests were used to determine associations between clinicopathological parameters and maxillary, mandibular, odontogenic, non-odontogenic and psammomatoid or trabecular lesions.
RESULTS
OF showed a female predilection (F: M; 2:1) and a slight bimodal age distribution with peaks in the second (23%) and fourth decades (27%) (Mean age: 32.4 years). 83% of cases presented as an intra-oral swelling, with the mandible being the most common site (73%). Histologically, a range of morphological patterns were seen, with 50% of cases showing mixed trabecular and psammomatoid features. However, there were no significant differences between the variants of OF in terms of age, gender or histological features.
CONCLUSION
Histological features of OF cannot be used to differentiate between the subtypes.

BACKGROUND/AIM
Foxp3 is a transcription factor responsible for the formation of T regulatory lymphocytes. Foxp3 expression can be associated with either neoplastic progression or regression. The aim of the study was to evaluate Foxp3 expression in soft tissue tumours (fibromas and fibrosarcomas) of skin and subcutaneous tissue in dogs and to describe its relationship with tumour malignancy grade.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The study was conducted on 71 skin and subcutaneous tumours including 31 fibromas and 40 fibrosarcomas. The samples underwent histological and immunohistochemical evaluation using anti-Foxp3, anti-Ki, and vimentin antibodies.
RESULTS
Cytoplasmic expression of Foxp3 protein in the cutaneous and subcutaneous fibrosarcomas in dogs was confirmed. Moreover, a positive relationship between the expression of Foxp3 and tumour malignancy grade and between Foxp3 and Ki-67 expression was noted.
CONCLUSION
A positive correlation between the Foxp3 expression intensity and malignancy grade suggests a significant role of Foxp3 in the carcinogenesis of skin and subcutaneous fibrosarcomas in dogs. Increased expression of Foxp3 may have a positive effect on the progression of cancer.

The mainstay of treatment for desmoid has been shifted to active surveillance (AS). However, surgery is still being performed on abdominal wall desmoid with a wide surgical margin. The purposes of this study are to clarify the treatment results of less-invasive, fascia preserving surgery for patients with abdominal wall desmoid, and to propose a new treatment modality. Since 2009, 34 patients with abdominal desmoid have been treated in our institution. Among them, as a final treatment modality, 15 (44%) were successful with AS, 15 were subjected to less-invasive surgery, and 4 methotrexate and vinblastine treatment. The clinical results of less-invasive surgery were clarified. In the surgical group, although the surgical margin was all microscopic positive (R1), only one patient (6.7%), who has the S45F mutation type of CTNNB1, showed recurrence, at a mean follow-up of 45 months. There were no patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)-related desmoid in this cohort. Only two patients (13%) required fascia lata patch reconstruction after removal of the tumor. In patients with non FAP-related abdominal wall desmoid, less-invasive, fascia preserving surgery is recommended as a favorable option as active treatment. Based on the results of this study, multi-institutional further research is warranted with an increased number of patients.
