Anxiety disorders are a major public health concern and current treatments are inadequate for many individuals. Anxiety is more common in women than men and this difference arises during puberty. Sex differences in physiological stress responses may contribute to this variability. During puberty, gonadal hormones shape brain structure and function, but the extent to which these changes affect stress sensitivity is unknown. We examined how pubertal androgens shape behavioral and neural responses to social stress in California mice (), a model species for studying sex differences in stress responses. In adults, social defeat reduces social approach and increases social vigilance in females but not males. We show this sex difference is absent in juveniles, and that prepubertal castration sensitizes adult males to social defeat. Adult gonadectomy does not alter behavioral responses to defeat, indicating that gonadal hormones act during puberty to program behavioral responses to stress in adulthood. Calcium imaging in the medioventral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) showed that social threats increased neural activity and that prepubertal castration generalized these responses to less threatening social contexts. These results support recent hypotheses that the BNST responds to immediate threats. Prepubertal treatment with the nonaromatizable androgen dihydrotestosterone acts in males and females to reduce the effects of defeat on social approach and vigilance in adults. These data indicate that activation of androgen receptors during puberty is critical for programming behavioral responses to stress in adulthood.

BACKGROUND
Delayed puberty (DP) affects approximately 2% of adolescents. In most patients of both genders, delayed puberty is due to constitutional delay in growth and puberty (CDGP); it is a self-limiting condition starting later than usual during puberty but progressing normally. Other causes of DP include permanent hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and gonadal insufficiency.
METHODS
Nine patients admitted to the Ankara Atatürk Sanatoryum Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Endocrinology Department with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism between January 2012 and December 2022 were analyzed.
RESULTS
Nine patients who applied to our pediatric endocrinology clinic with delayed puberty were analyzed. These nine patients were diagnosed and reported as hypogonadotropic hypogonadism with molecular methods. We aimed to determine the status of these cases from a molecular point of view, to emphasize the importance of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in patients with delayed puberty, and to reveal the rarely encountered delayed puberty together with the clinical and laboratory data set of the patients.
CONCLUSIONS
To emphasize the importance of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, which is a rare cause of delayed puberty, the molecular predispositions of our patients followed in our clinic are reviewed, and the data we have provided will contribute to the accumulation of data in this area.

BACKGROUND
Fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) are positively associated with blood pressure (BP) in youth. Yet, how puberty, independent of age, affects these relationships remains unclear. Given puberty may be a crucial period for cardiometabolic health, we examined how pubertal development moderates the associations of FM/FFM with BP.
METHODS
Pubertal development, resting BP, and body composition were assessed in a convenience sample of youth (5.5-17 years). General linear models were conducted to assess if pubertal development moderated the relationships between FM/FFM and systolic/diastolic BP standardized for age, sex, and height (SBPz/DBPz).
RESULTS
Among participants (N = 1405; age: M = 13.3 ± 2.9 years; 65.4% female; 53.2% racial/ethnic minority), FM/FFM were positively associated with SBPz and DBPz (ps ≤ 0.02). Pubertal development moderated the associations between FFM and BPz (ps ≤ 0.01), but not FM (ps > 0.43). For early/mid and late pubertal participants, there were positive associations between FFM and BP (DBPz: βs = 0.10-0.18, ps ≤ 0.01; SBPz: βs = 0.33-0.43, ps < 0.001); however, these relationships were attenuated, especially for prepubertal DBPz (DBPz: β = 0.01, p = 0.91; SBPz: β = 0.24, p = 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
Puberty moderated the relationships between FFM and SBPz/DBPz in analyses that separately modeled the contributions of age and sex. These data suggest that the FFM-DBPz association may potentially be impacted by increasing sex hormone concentrations during puberty.
IMPACT
Fat mass (FM) and blood pressure (BP) were positively associated throughout puberty. Fat-free mass (FFM) and BP were positively associated throughout puberty; however, puberty moderated the FFM-BP relationship, such that there was a positive relationship in early/mid and late puberty, but the relationship was attenuated for prepubertal children. These findings contribute further insight into physiological and cardiometabolic changes occurring during puberty. Changes in hormone concentrations may explain the impact puberty has on the FFM-BP relationship. Understanding predictors of BP are important as childhood BP is associated with future cardiometabolic outcomes.

BACKGROUND
Reusable menstrual products have expanded the choices available for menstrual care and can offer long-term cost and environmental benefits. Yet, in high-income settings, efforts to support period product access focus on disposable products. There is limited research to understand young people's product use and preferences in Australia.
METHODS
Quantitative and open-text qualitative data were collected through an annual cross-sectional survey of young people (aged 15-29) in Victoria, Australia. The convenience sample was recruited through targeted social media advertisements. Young people who reported menstruating in the past 6 months (n = 596) were asked questions about their menstrual product use, use of reusable materials, product priorities and preferences.
RESULTS
Among participants, 37% had used a reusable product during their last menstrual period (24% period underwear, 17% menstrual cup, 5% reusable pads), and a further 11% had tried using a reusable product in the past. Reusable product use was associated with older age (age 25-29 PR = 3.35 95%CI = 2.09-5.37), being born in Australia (PR = 1.74 95%CI = 1.05-2.87), and having greater discretionary income (PR = 1.53 95%CI = 1.01-2.32). Participants nominated comfort, protection from leakage and environmental sustainability as the most important features of menstrual products, followed by cost. Overall, 37% of participants reported not having enough information about reusable products. Having enough information was less common among younger participants (age 25-29 PR = 1.42 95%CI = 1.20-1.68) and high school students (PR = 0.68 95%CI = 0.52-0.88). Respondents highlighted the need for earlier and better information, challenges navigating the upfront cost and availability of reusables, positive experiences with reusables, and challenges for use, including cleaning reusables and changing them outside the home.
CONCLUSIONS
Many young people are using reusable products, with environmental impacts an important motivator. Educators should incorporate better menstrual care information in puberty education and advocates should raise awareness of how bathroom facilities may support product choice.

We are all living with hundreds of anthropogenic chemicals in our bodies every day, a situation that threatens the reproductive health of present and future generations. This review focuses on endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), both naturally occurring and man-made, and summarizes how they interfere with the neuroendocrine system to adversely impact pregnancy outcomes, semen quality, age at puberty, and other aspects of human reproductive health. While obvious malformations of the genitals and other reproductive organs are a clear sign of adverse reproductive health outcomes and injury to brain sexual differentiation, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis can be much more difficult to discern, particularly in humans. It is well-established that, over the course of development, gonadal hormones shape the vertebrate brain such that sex-specific reproductive physiology and behaviors emerge. Decades of work in neuroendocrinology have elucidated many of the discrete and often very short developmental windows across pre- and postnatal development in which this occurs. This has allowed toxicologists to probe how EDC exposures in these critical windows can permanently alter the structure and function of the HPG axis. This review includes a discussion of key EDC principles including how latency between exposure and the emergence of consequential health effects can be long, along with a summary of the most common and less well-understood EDC modes of action. Extensive examples of how EDCs are impacting human reproductive health, and evidence that they have the potential for multi-generational physiological and behavioral effects are also provided.

Paucity of data exists on the timing of puberty, particularly the pubarche, in developing countries, which has hitherto limited the knowledge of the timing of pubarche, and assistance offered by physicians to anxious young people in Nigeria. Factors associated with the timings of puberty and pubarche are not well documented in Nigeria. We hypothesized that the timing of pubarche in Nigeria differs by geographical regions and other characteristics. We assessed the timing of pubarche among adolescents and young adults in Nigeria and identified prognostic factors of the timing by obtaining information on youths' sexual and reproductive developments in a population survey among in-school and out-of-school youths aged 15 to 24 years in Nigeria. A total of 1174 boys and 1004 girls provided valid information on pubarche. Results of time-to-event analysis of the data showed that mean age at pubarche among males aged 15 to 19 years and 20 to 24 years was 13.5 (SD = 1.63 years) and 14.2 (SD = 2.18 years) (respectively) compared with 13.0 (SD = 1.57 years) and 13.5 (SD = 2.06 years) among females of the same age. Median time to pubarche was 14 (Interquartile range (IQR) = 3) years and 13 (IQR = 3) years among the males and females, respectively. Cumulatively, 37% of the males had attained pubarche by age 13 years versus 53% among females, 57% vs 72% at age 14, and 73% vs 81% at age 15. The likelihood of pubarche among males was delayed by 5% compared with females (Time Ratio (TR) = 1.05: 95% CI = 1.03-1.05). Every additional one-year in the ages of both males and females increases the risk of pubarche by 1%. Similar to the females, males residents in Northeast (aTR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.07-1.21), in the Northwest (aTR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.13-1.27) and in the Southwest (aTR = 1.18, 95% CI: 1.11-1.26) had delayed pubarche than males from the South East. Yoruba males had delayed pubarche than Ibo males (aTR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.01-1.12). Age at pubarche among adolescents and young adults in Nigeria differed among males and females with earlier onset among females. Pubarche timing varied mainly by ethnicity, region, and location of residence. Our findings will aid medical practitioners in providing appropriate advice and support on pubarche-related issues among adolescents in Nigeria as it could help douse pubarche anxiousness in relation to request for medical assistance.

The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the association between a soy-based infant diet and the onset of puberty. We included studies in which children were fed a soy-based diet, and we compared them with those who were not. The primary outcomes were the onset of puberty in girls (thelarche, pubarche, and menarche age), boys (pubarche, voice change, testicular and penis enlargement age), and both (risk of delayed and precocious puberty [PP]). Search strategies were performed in PubMed, Embase, LILACS, and CENTRAL databases. Two reviewers selected eligible studies, assessed the risk of bias, and extracted data from the included studies. The odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) were calculated with a 95% confidence interval (CI) as a measure of the association between soy consumption and outcomes. We used a random-effects model to pool results across studies and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation to evaluate the certainty of evidence. We included eight studies in which 598 children consumed a soy-based diet but 2957 did not. The primary outcomes that could be plotted in the meta-analysis were the risk of PP and age at menarche. There was no statistical difference between groups for PP (OR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.09 to 2.94, 3 studies, 206 participants, low certainty of evidence). No between-group difference was observed in menarche age (MD 0.14 years, 95% CI -0.16 to 0.45, 3 studies, 605 children, low certainty of evidence). One study presented this outcome in terms of median and interquartile range, and although the onset of menarche was marginally increased in girls who received a soy-based diet, the reported age was within the normal age range for menarche. We did not find any association between a soy-based infant diet and the onset of puberty in boys or girls. Trial Registration: PROSPERO registration: CRD42018088902.

IMPORTANCE
Earlier pubertal onset may be associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases. However, the extent to which growth in the first 5 years of life-an important developmental life stage that lays the foundation for later health outcomes-is associated with pubertal onset remains understudied.
OBJECTIVE
To assess whether changes in weight, length or height, and body mass index (BMI, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) during the first 5 years of life are associated with earlier pubertal onset.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS
This cohort study used data from 36 cohorts participating in the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes program from January 1, 1986, to December 31, 2015. Participant inclusion required at least 1 anthropometric measure in the first 5 years of life and at least 1 measure of pubertal onset. Data were analyzed from January 1 to June 30, 2021.
EXPOSURES
Standardized velocities of weight, length or height, and BMI gain in early infancy (0-0.5 years), late infancy (0.5-2 years), and early childhood (2-5 years).
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES
Markers of pubertal onset for boys and girls, including age at peak height velocity (APHV), time to puberty score greater than 1, time to Tanner pubic hair stage greater than 1, and time to menarche. Multivariable regression models were used to estimate mean differences in APHV by growth periods.
RESULTS
Of 7495 children included in the study, 3772 (50.3%) were girls, 4505 (60.1%) were White individuals, and 6307 (84.1%) were born during or after the year 2000. Girls had a younger APHV (10.8 vs 12.9 years) than boys. In boys, faster weight gain (per 1-SD increase) in early infancy (β, -0.08 years; 95% CI, -0.10 to -0.06), late infancy (β, -0.10 years; 95% CI, -0.12 to -0.08), and early childhood (β, -0.07 years; 95% CI, -0.08 to -0.05) was associated with younger APHV after adjusting for the child's birth year, race, and Hispanic ethnicity as well as maternal age at delivery; educational level during pregnancy; annual household income during pregnancy; prenatal cigarette smoking; whether the mother was nulliparous; whether the mother had gestational diabetes, hypertension, or preeclampsia; mode of delivery; prepregnancy BMI; gestational weight gain; and gestational age at delivery. Similar associations were observed for length or height and BMI gains during the same age periods. In girls, faster gains (per 1-SD increase) in weight (β, -0.03 years; 95% CI, -0.05 to -0.01) and height (β, -0.02 years; 95% CI, -0.04 to 0.00) in early childhood were associated with younger APHV. Faster BMI gain in late infancy was associated with earlier time to menarche, whereas faster BMI gain in early childhood was associated with earlier time to Tanner pubic hair stage greater than 1.
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE
This cohort study found that faster gains in weight, length or height, or BMI in early life were associated with earlier pubertal onset. The results suggest that children who experience faster early growth should be monitored closely for earlier onset of puberty and referred as appropriate for supportive services.

BACKGROUND
Puberty is a highly heritable and variable trait, with environmental factors having a role in its eventual timing and development. Early and late pubertal onset are both associated with various diseases developing later in life, and epigenetic characterisation of pubertal timing and development could lead to important insights. Blood DNA methylation, reacting to both genotype and environment, has been associated with puberty; however, such studies are relatively scarce. We investigated peripheral blood DNA methylation profiles (using Illumina 450 K and EPIC platforms) of 1539 young adult Finnish twins associated with pubertal development scale (PDS) at ages 12 and 14 as well as pubertal age (PA).
RESULTS
Fixed effect meta-analysis of the two platforms on 347,521 CpGs in common identified 58 CpG sites associated (p < 1 × 10) with either PDS or PA. All four CpGs associated with PA and 45 CpGs associated with PDS were sex-specific. Thirteen CpGs had a high heritability (h2: 0.51-0.98), while one CpG site (mapped to GET4) had a high shared environmental component accounting for 68% of the overall variance in methylation at the site. Utilising twin discordance analysis, we found 6 CpG sites (5 associated with PDS and 1 with PA) that had an environmentally driven association with puberty. Furthermore, genes with PDS- or PA-associated CpGs were consistently linked to various developmental processes and diseases such as breast, prostate and ovarian cancer, while methylation quantitative trait loci of associated CpG sites were enriched in immune pathways developing during puberty.
CONCLUSIONS
By identifying puberty-associated DNA methylation sites and examining the effects of sex, environment and genetics, we shed light on the intricate interplay between environment and genetics in the context of puberty. Through our comprehensive analysis, we not only deepen the understanding of the significance of both genetic and environmental factors in the complex processes of puberty and its timing, but also gain insights into potential links with disease risks.

STUDY OBJECTIVE
Several strategies have been proposed to determine onset of puberty without examination by a trained professional. This study sought to evaluate a novel approach to determine onset of puberty in girls.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS
This study used the Cincinnati cohort of the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program. Girls were recruited at 6-7 years of age and followed every 6 months in the initial 6 years, and annually thereafter. Breast maturation and foot length were performed at each visit by health professionals certified in those methods. Mothers were asked to provide the age at which they believed that their daughter's shoe size had increased more rapidly.
RESULTS
These analyses include 252 participants. Age at increase in shoe size was correlated to age at onset of puberty (r = 0.21) and increase in foot length (r = 0.24). The difference of reported age of increased shoe size was 0.46 years before breast development.
CONCLUSION
Reported increase in shoe size occurred somewhat earlier and was significantly correlated to age of breast development. These preliminary results suggest that mother's report of increase in shoe size appear to be as accurate as reports of other indirect methods of determining onset of puberty, such as self- or maternal estimates of breast development.
