BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Polyvinyl ether siloxane (PVES) possesses ideal characteristics for making precise and accurate dental impressions. PVES dimensional stability owes to its better polymeric properties derived from its parent materials poly ethers and polyvinyl siloxanes. As recommended use of chemical disinfecting agents is getting more popular, there is a growing concern associated with the effect of disinfectants on PVES dimensional stability. This study was aimed to understand the PVES behavior when subjected to chemical disinfectants.
MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY
The data was collected from research studies retrieved from Google Scholar, Scopus, and PubMed using MeSH terms of keywords "vinyl polyether siloxane AND Disinfection" or (Vinyl polyether siloxane OR polyvinyl siloxane ether OR PVES) AND (disinfectant OR disinfection)" without any restriction to publication date. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis) directions were observed during the data collection, screening of studies, and meta-analysis. The primary data were retrieved, and batch exported from databases using Harzing's Publish or Perish software; primary analysis was performed in Microsoft Excel, while statistical analysis for effect size, two-tailed p-values, and heterogeneity among studies was performed using Meta Essentials. The effect size was calculated using Hedge's g values at the 95% confidence level using the random-effects model. Heterogeneity among studies was measured using the Cochrane Q and I.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION
Dental impressions made from the PVES elastomeric impression materials showed no significant changes in dimensional stability. Immersion in the chemical disinfectant for 10 min was associated with clinically irrelevant changes in the dimensions of the PVES impressions. Disinfection with sodium hypochlorite was associated with clinically significant changes in dimensions, with a two-tailed p-value of 0.049. Disinfection with 2-2.5% glutaraldehyde solution was not associated with any significant dimensional variability.

AIM
This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess and compare the accuracy of conventional and digital implant impressions. The review was registered on the PROSPERO register (registration number: CRD42016050730).
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A systematic literature search was conducted adhering to PRISMA guidelines to identify studies on implant impressions published between 2012 and 2017. Experimental and clinical studies at all levels of evidence published in peer-reviewed journals were included, excluding expert opinions. Data extraction was performed along defined parameters for studied specimens, digital and conventional impression specifications and outcome assessment.
RESULTS
Seventy-nine studies were included for the systematic review, thereof 77 experimental studies, one RCT and one retrospective study. The study setting was in vitro for most of the included studies (75 studies) and in vivo for four studies. Accuracy of conventional impressions was examined in 59 studies, whereas digital impressions were examined in 11 studies. Nine studies compared the accuracy of conventional and digital implant impressions. Reported measurements for the accuracy include the following: (a) linear and angular deviations between reference models and test models fabricated with each impression technique; (b) three-dimensional deviations between impression posts and scan bodies respectively; and (c) fit of implant-supported frameworks, assessed by measuring marginal discrepancy along implant abutments.) Meta-analysis was performed of 62 studies. The results of conventional and digital implant impressions exhibited high values for heterogeneity.
CONCLUSIONS
The available data for accuracy of digital and conventional implant impressions have a low evidence level and do not include sufficient data on in vivo application to derive clinical recommendations.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of splinting impression copings on the accuracy of conventional impressions for two-unit nonparallel implant restorations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched with no publication year or language limits, and studies comparing the accuracy of conventional impressions for two-unit nonparallel implant restorations made using splinted impression copings and nonsplinted impression copings were identified. A meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager software. The mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for the framework strain and marginal gap of the implant-framework connection between impressions using splinted and nonsplinted copings were statistically analyzed (α = .05).
RESULTS
Initially, 142 articles were identified after the removal of duplicates. Five in vitro studies were included in the systematic review, and four in vitro studies were included in the meta-analysis. All the included studies were focused on internal-connection implants and implant-level impressions. The implant angulation in the included studies ranged from 8 to 30 degrees. Impressions using splinted impression copings exhibited significantly smaller marginal gaps than those using nonsplinted impression copings (P = .02; mean difference [MD] = -13.34; 95% CI = -24.31 to -2.36). Moreover, with respect to the framework strain, no significant differences were found between impressions using splinted impression copings and nonsplinted impression copings (P = .47; MD = -12.64; 95% CI = -47.32 to 22.03).
CONCLUSIONS
Significantly larger marginal gaps were found in the impressions using splinted impression copings, but the clinical significance was low. Based on the limited number of studies included, splinting copings is unnecessary when making conventional impressions for two-unit nonparallel implant restorations.

PURPOSE
To compare the marginal gap and internal fit of fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated using intraoral vs extraoral scanning methods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
MEDLINE/PubMed and the Cochrane database were searched. The focused PICO question was: For the fabrication of FDPs, does an intraoral scanning technique result in a different marginal gap than an extraoral scanning technique? The secondary outcome assessed was internal fit. Studies were selected based on the inclusion criteria, and a meta-analysis was performed.
RESULTS
A total of 14 studies (10 in vitro and 4 in vivo) were included in the meta-analysis. Marginal gap in single crowns was evaluated in 5 studies, copings for single crowns in 5 studies, three-unit FDPs in 3 studies, and both single-crown and three-unit FDPs in 1 study. Significantly lower marginal gap was found with intraoral scanning compared to impression scanning (P < .001) and cast scanning (P < .001), and for impression scanning compared to cast scanning (P = .037). Internal fit was superior with intraoral scanning compared to impression scanning, and this difference was significant (P < .001). No significant differences were found in internal fit with cast scanning compared to intraoral or impression scanning. The mean marginal gap/internal fit was 188.3 μm/146.2 μm with intraoral scanning, 116.29 μm/168.2 μm with impression scanning, and 195.1 μm/229.1 μm with cast scanning.
CONCLUSION
Marginal gap was lower with intraoral scanning than with impression scanning and cast scanning. Impression scanning showed less marginal gap than cast scanning. Internal fit with intraoral scanning was superior to impression scanning, but when compared to cast scanning, no difference was found.

Disinfection efficacy of sodium hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde and their effects on the dimensional stability and surface properties of dental impressions: a systematic review.
OBJECTIVE
To systematically evaluate the disinfection efficacy of the two most frequently used disinfectants, sodium hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde, and their effects on the surface properties of four different dental impression materials.
METHODS
A systematic literature search was performed in four databases until May 1st, 2022 to select the studies which evaluated disinfection efficacy of disinfectants or surface properties of dental impressions after chemical disinfection.
MAIN RESULTS
A total of 50 studies were included through electronic database searches. Of these studies, 13 studies evaluated disinfection efficacy of two disinfectants, and 39 studies evaluated their effects on the surface properties of dental impressions. A 10-minute disinfection with 0.5-1% sodium hypochlorite or 2% glutaraldehyde was effective to inactivate oral flora and common oral pathogenic bacteria. With regard to surface properties, chemical disinfection within 30 min could not alter the dimensional stability, detail reproduction and wettability of alginate and polyether impressions. However, the wettability of addition silicone impressions and the dimensional stability of condensation silicone impressions were adversely affected after chemical disinfection, while other surface properties of these two dental impressions were out of significant influence.
CONCLUSIONS
Alginate impressions are strongly recommended to be disinfected with 0.5% sodium hypochlorite using spray disinfection method for 10 min. Meanwhile, elastomeric impressions are strongly recommended to be disinfected with 0.5% sodium hypochlorite or 2% glutaraldehyde using immersion disinfection method for 10 min, however, polyether impression should be disinfected with 2% glutaraldehyde.

PURPOSE
To systematically review the available literature and determine the potential benefits of altered cast impression technique over conventional single-impression techniques for the fabrication of distal extension removable dental prostheses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The indexed English literature published up to April 30, 2018, was systematically searched for studies comparing altered cast impression technique to conventional single-impression techniques for the fabrication of distal extension removable dental prostheses using guidelines recommended by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses (PRISMA). The databases searched were PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE (OVID). Two reviewers independently screened and shortlisted the relevant studies based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria.
RESULTS
Seven studies were included in this review; all were in vivo studies. All seven studies reported that cast removable partial dentures fabricated with altered cast impression technique displayed less vertical movement of denture bases compared to those fabricated using conventional impression techniques. Two of these studies reported that this difference in vertical movement was clinically insignificant, while the other five studies reported a statistically significant difference in vertical movement but were uncertain regarding clinical significance.
CONCLUSION
The results of this literature review indicate that the altered cast impression technique did not offer significant advantages over conventional single-impression techniques. The lack of convincing data to predict superiority of the altered cast impression technique for distal extension removable dental prosthesis impressions emphasizes the need for more scientific research with larger sample sizes and longer performance reviews of removable dental prostheses.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Different assessment methods have been used to measure the accuracy of implant impression techniques; therefore, the readers should understand the benefits and limitations of each assessment method used.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to classify the implant impression studies by the assessment methods and techniques used and to understand the characteristics of each assessment method. The results of published studies were also analyzed to draw meaningful conclusions about the accuracy of the implant impressions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
An electronic search of the MEDLINE/PubMed database was performed in February 2013 using specific search terms and predetermined criteria to identify and assess laboratory studies of the accuracy of implant impression techniques. A final list of articles deemed to be of interest was comprehensively reviewed by 2 reviewers to ensure that these were suitable for the purpose of this review. The results of the current review were also compared with results from a previous systematic review.
RESULTS
A total of 56 studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. Thirty-seven studies measured the amount of linear distortion, and 17 studies compared the angular change to assess the accuracy. Most linear or angular distortions were only measured in 2 dimensions, and 3-dimensional analysis was rare. More than 80% of the studies compared nonsplinting versus splinting, direct versus indirect techniques, and different impression materials.
CONCLUSIONS
In recent publications, the direct or splint technique showed more accurate results than the indirect or nonsplinted technique. In contrast to external connection implants, inconsistent results were reported for internal connection implants.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Digital workflows for digital complete denture fabrication have a variety of clinical and laboratory procedures, but their outcomes and associated complications are currently unknown.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the clinical and laboratory procedures for digital complete dentures, their outcomes, and associated complications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Electronic literature searches were conducted on PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Web of Science for studies published from January 2000 to September 2022 and screened by 2 independent reviewers. Information on digital complete denture procedures, materials, their outcomes, and associated complications was extracted.
RESULTS
Of 266 screened studies, 39 studies were included. While 26 assessed definitive complete dentures, 7 studies assessed denture bases, 2 assessed trial dentures, and 4 assessed the digital images only. Twenty-four studies used border molded impression technique, 3 studies used a facebow record, and 7 studies used gothic arch tracing. Only 13 studies performed trial denture placement. Twenty-one studies used milling, and 17 studies used 3D printing for denture fabrication. One study reported that the retention of maxillary denture bases fabricated from a border-molded impression (14.5 to 16.1 N) was statistically higher than the retention of those fabricated from intraoral scanning (6.2 to 6.6 N). The maximum occlusal force of digital complete denture wearers was similar across different fabrication procedures. When compared with the conventional workflow, digital complete dentures required statistically shorter clinical time with 205 to 233 minutes saved. Up to 37.5% of participants reported loss of retention and up to 31.3% required a denture remake. In general, ≥1 extra visit and 1 to 4 unscheduled follow-up visits were needed. The outcomes for patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life were similar between conventional, milled, and 3D-printed complete dentures.
CONCLUSIONS
Making a border-molded impression is still preferred for better retention, and trial denture placement is still recommended to optimize the fabrication of definitive digital complete dentures.

OBJECTIVE
To analyze the clinical outcomes of implant-supported prostheses and tooth-supported fixed prostheses, fabricated from digital and conventional impression.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The literature search was carried out on two electronic databases (PubMed and Cochrane Library). Randomized controlled trials (RCT) published from January 2011 to September 2022 were included. The bias risk was evaluated using Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. Further screening was done for meta-analysis according to modified Newcastle-Ottawa scoring criteria. Forest plot was generated using a statistical method of inverse variance of random effect with 95% confidence interval.
RESULTS
A total of 8 randomized controlled trials were included for systematic review out of which four studies were based on tooth-supported fixed prosthesis and remaining four were based on implant-supported prosthesis. Further screening was conducted and three studies were eligible for meta-analysis. Tooth-supported fixed prosthesis fabricated from digital impression showed no significant difference in the marginal fit in any region measured, except for occlusal region where conventional impression showed more favorable marginal fit. Implant-supported prosthesis fabricated from digital impression showed survival rates ranging from 97.3 to 100% and there was no statistically significant difference in marginal bone loss (p = 0.14).
CONCLUSION
Implant-supported prostheses fabricated from digital and conventional impressions show no significant differences in their clinical outcomes. Tooth-supported fixed prostheses fabricated from digital impression have shown favorable findings in terms of marginal fit. Despite that, there is still lack of clinical trials with larger sample size and longer follow-up periods. Future studies that fulfill these two criteria are deemed necessary.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Lithium disilicate crowns can be manufactured by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) or with the heat-pressed technique. The outcome of studies comparing the effect of the manufacturing method on the marginal adaptation of these crowns is not clear.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of the CAD-CAM system and pressing technique on the marginal adaptation of lithium disilicate crowns.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. A literature research was conducted in MEDLINE via PubMed and Scopus databases, relevant journal sites, and the authors' collected references, from January 2009 to April 2019.
RESULTS
The electronic and manual searches that could be read in full totaled 24 studies; of which, 9 were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, 7 of which were in vitro and 2 in vivo. Statistical analyses were conducted by using Review Manager software program. Meta-analyses were performed with the random effects model (α=.05). In vitro studies showed no difference in the manufacturing (P>.001; 95% confidence interval -0.687 to 0.632), and no significant difference was found for in vivo studies (P=.7, 95% confidence interval 0.00 to 54.77). In the joint analysis of the in vivo and in vitro articles, there was a significant difference between the manufacturing methods (P<.001).
CONCLUSIONS
Differences were detected between the marginal adaptation of lithium disilicate crowns fabricated with the CAD-CAM system and the pressing technique, but the accuracy values were clinically acceptable.
