OBJECTIVE
To investigate the association between preparation designs and prognosis of porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs).
METHODS
Electronic and manual literature searches were performed in Medline, Embase, CENTRAL, and Scopus databases for randomized controlled trials and retrospective and prospective cohort studies comparing any two of three preparation designs. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Pooled hazard ratios and risk ratios were used to evaluate the difference between two preparation designs. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analysis, and evaluation of publication bias were performed if possible.
RESULTS
Of 415 screened articles, 10 studies with moderate to high quality were included in the meta-analysis. Comparison of preparations with incisal coverage to preparations without coverage revealed a significant result based on time-to-event data (hazard ratio=1.81, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.18-2.78, I=12.5%), but the result was insignificant based on dichotomous data (risk ratio=1.04, 95% CI=0.59-1.83, I=42.3%). The other comparisons between any two of overlap, butt-joint, and window types revealed no statistically significant difference. Subgroup analyses regarding the porcelain materials, location of prosthesis, and tooth vitality could account for only part of the heterogeneity. No evidence of publication bias was observed.
CONCLUSIONS
Within the limitation of the present study, it can be concluded that preparation design with incisal coverage for PLVs exhibits an increased failure risk compared to those without incisal coverage. The failure risk of the overlap type may be higher than the butt-joint type but must be validated in further studies.

This study aimed to systematically review the literature to evaluate the marginal adaptation of veneers using different fabrication methods, namely, conventional feldspathic porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs), computer-aided design-computer-aided machining (CAD-CAM) veneers, and pressed veneers. A comprehensive literature search was performed using electronic databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) as well as hand searches to identify all relevant studies related to veneers and marginal adaptation. The identified studies were screened for assessing the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included articles were then subjected to data extraction and analysis. The search resulted in 130 articles, of which six were included in this systematic review. All included articles were assessed for adaptation of margins. Based on the findings of this systematic review, no significant differences were found in the marginal adaptation of CAD-CAM and conventional feldspathic PLVs. The marginal fidelity of ceramic veneers issuing from the various fabrication techniques was clinically acceptable.

OBJECTIVE
To use a systematic review to determine which materials and technique/protocol present the highest success rate in bonding brackets to porcelain surfaces.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Different databases were searched without limitations up to July 2013. Additionally, the bibliographies of the finally selected articles were hand searched to identify any relevant publications that were not identified earlier. In vitro and in vivo articles were included.
RESULTS
No in vivo articles were found that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A total of 45 in vitro articles met all inclusion criteria. They were published between 2000 to July 2013.
CONCLUSIONS
The best protocol described in this review is the etching of 9.6% hydrofluoric acid for 1 minute, rinsed for 30 seconds, and then air-dried. The etching of hydrofluoric acid should be followed by an application of silane. Considering the harmful effects of etching with hydrofluoric acid, another appropriate suggestion is mechanical roughening with sandblasting followed by an application of silane.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Dental alloy manufacturers advise against the reuse of previously melted alloy. However, for economic reasons, dental laboratories often reuse the casting surplus (sprue and metal remaining in the crucible former). Such reuse remains a controversial topic in dental practice.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the effects of remelting dental alloys by evaluating the following parameters: reasons for recasting and associated processes, feasible number of recastings, treatment of alloys before recasting and its effects on cytotoxicity, color of opaque porcelain, castability of alloys, marginal accuracy, mechanical properties, porcelain-metal interfaces, and corrosion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The systematic review included all studies on dental alloy recasting. MEDLINE, Dentistry and Oral Science Source, Science Direct, and ISI Web of Science were searched (up to July 2014). Data were extracted and the quality of studies was assessed.
RESULTS
Thirty-four studies published between 1983 and 2014 were included. The number of recastings ranged from 1 to 10. The percentage of new alloy ranged from 0 to 100 wt%, although the mean value was 50 wt%.
CONCLUSIONS
Evidence for the feasibility of adding 50% new metal at each recasting is limited. The number of recastings should be limited to a maximum of 4. No general test protocol can be deduced from these studies, which limits the comparison and exploitation of data. Furthermore, no consensus protocol exists for the evaluation of recasting. Future studies should work toward establishing a standard protocol.

BACKGROUND
Despite the importance of identifying proper novel porcelain preparation techniques to improve bonding of orthodontic brackets to porcelain surfaces, and despite the highly controversial results on this subject, no systematic review or meta-analysis exists in this regard.
OBJECTIVE
To comparatively summarize the effects of all the available porcelain surface treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of orthodontic brackets (metal, ceramic, polycarbonate) bonded to feldspathic porcelain restorations. . A search was conducted for articles published between January 1990 and February 2021 in PubMed, MeSH, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and reference lists. . English-language articles comparing SBS of feldspathic porcelain's surface preparation methods for metal/ceramic/polycarbonate orthodontic brackets were included. Articles comparing silanes/bonding agents/primers without assessing roughening techniques were excluded. . Studies were summarized and risk of bias assessed. Each treatment's SBS was compared with the 6 and 10 MPa recommended thresholds. Studies including comparator (HF [hydrofluoric acid] + silane + bonding) were candidates for meta-analysis. ARI scores were dichotomized. Fixed- and random-effects models were used and forest plots drawn. Egger regressions and/or funnel plots were used to assess publication biases.
RESULTS
Thirty-two studies were included (140 groups of SBS, 82 groups of ARI). Bond strengths of 21 studies were meta-analyzed (64 comparisons in 14 meta-analyses). ARIs of 12 articles were meta-analyzed (28 comparisons in 8 meta-analyses). Certain protocols provided bond strengths poorer than HF + silane + bonding: "abrasion + bonding, diamond bur + bonding, HF + bonding, Nd:YAG laser (1 W) + silane + bonding, CO laser (2 W/2 Hz) + silane + bonding, and phosphoric acid + silane + bonding." Abrasion + HF + silane + bonding might act almost better than HF + silane + bonding. Abrasion + silane + bonding yields controversial results, being slightly (marginally significantly) better than HF + silane + bonding. Some protocols had controversial results with their overall effects being close to HF + silane + bonding: "Cojet + silane + bonding, diamond bur + silane + bonding, Er:YAG laser (1.6 W/20 Hz) + silane + bonding." Few methods provided bond strengths similar to HF + silane + bonding without much controversy: "Nd:YAG laser (2 W) + silane + bonding" and "phosphoric acid + silane + bonding" (in ceramic brackets). ARIs were either similar to HF + silane + bonding or relatively skewed towards the "no resin on porcelain" end. The risk of bias was rather low. . All the found studies were in vitro and thus not easily translatable to clinical conditions. Many metasamples were small.
CONCLUSIONS
The preparation methods HF + silane + bonding, abrasion + HF + silane + bonding, Nd:YAG (2 W) + silane + bonding, and phosphoric acid + silane + bonding (in ceramic brackets) might provide stronger bonds.

OBJECTIVES
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the comparative clinical success and survival of intracoronal indirect restorations using gold, lithium disilicate, leucite, and indirect composite materials.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and PRISMA guidelines. The protocol for this study was registered in PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42021233185). A comprehensive literature search was conducted across various databases and sources, including PubMed/Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, and gray literature. A total of 7826 articles were screened on title and abstract. Articles were not excluded based on the vitality of teeth, the language of the study, or the observation period. The risk difference was utilized for the analyses, and a random-effects model was applied. All analyses were conducted with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The calculated risk differences were derived from the combined data on restoration survival and failures obtained from each individual article. The presence of heterogeneity was assessed using the I statistic, and if present, the heterogeneity of the data in the articles was evaluated using the non-parametric chi-squared statistic (p < 0.05).
RESULTS
A total of 12 eligible studies were selected, which included 946 restorations evaluated over a minimum observation period of 1 year and a maximum observation period of 7 years. Results of the meta-analysis indicated that intracoronal indirect resin composite restorations have an 18% higher rate of failure when compared to intracoronal gold restorations over 5-7 years of clinical service (risk difference = - 0.18 [95% CI: - 0.27, - 0.09]; p = .0002; I = 0%). The meta-analysis examining the disparity in survival rates between intracoronal gold and leucite restorations could not be carried out due to methodological differences in the studies.
CONCLUSIONS
According to the currently available evidence, medium-quality data indicates that lithium disilicate and indirect composite materials demonstrate comparable survival rates in short-term follow-up. Furthermore, intracoronal gold restorations showed significantly higher survival rates, making them a preferred option over intracoronal indirect resin-composite restorations. Besides that, the analysis revealed no statistically significant difference in survival rates between leucite and indirect composite restorations. The short observation period, limited number of eligible articles, and low sample size of the included studies were significant limitations.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Bearing in mind the limitations of the reviewed literature, this systematic review and meta-analysis help clinicians make evidence-based decisions on how to restore biomechanically compromised posterior teeth.

PURPOSE
This systematic review aims to explore and compile the effect of adhesive luting on the mechanical properties of dental ceramics used as restorative materials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched on January 31st, 2021 to select laboratory studies written in English, without publishing-date restrictions, which compared the mechanical properties of commercially available dental ceramics as restorative materials luted using adhesive vs non-adhesive strategies. A total of 20 (out of 2039) studies were eligible and included in the analysis. Two authors independently selected the studies, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias. Mean differences (RevMan5.1, random effects model, α = 0.05) were obtained by comparing resistance values of adhesive and non-adhesive conditions (global analysis). Subgroup analyses were performed considering ceramic composition and aging.
RESULTS
In the global analysis, adhesive luting induced higher mechanical resistance values compared to non-adhesive luting (p ≤ 0.01). The same effect was observed for glass and alumina ceramics (p ≤ 0.01), but not for zirconia polycrystals (p = 0.83). Adhesive luting was favorable in both the aged and non-aged subgroup analysis (p ≤ 0.01). High heterogeneity was found in all meta-analyses. All analyzed studies in the systematic review scored negatively for risk of bias in most of the factors considered.
CONCLUSIONS
Adhesive luting reinforces the mechanical properties of dental ceramics used as restorative materials, with the exception of zirconia polycrystals.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Lithium disilicate crowns can be manufactured by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) or with the heat-pressed technique. The outcome of studies comparing the effect of the manufacturing method on the marginal adaptation of these crowns is not clear.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of the CAD-CAM system and pressing technique on the marginal adaptation of lithium disilicate crowns.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. A literature research was conducted in MEDLINE via PubMed and Scopus databases, relevant journal sites, and the authors' collected references, from January 2009 to April 2019.
RESULTS
The electronic and manual searches that could be read in full totaled 24 studies; of which, 9 were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, 7 of which were in vitro and 2 in vivo. Statistical analyses were conducted by using Review Manager software program. Meta-analyses were performed with the random effects model (α=.05). In vitro studies showed no difference in the manufacturing (P>.001; 95% confidence interval -0.687 to 0.632), and no significant difference was found for in vivo studies (P=.7, 95% confidence interval 0.00 to 54.77). In the joint analysis of the in vivo and in vitro articles, there was a significant difference between the manufacturing methods (P<.001).
CONCLUSIONS
Differences were detected between the marginal adaptation of lithium disilicate crowns fabricated with the CAD-CAM system and the pressing technique, but the accuracy values were clinically acceptable.

The prosthesis must have good survival despite being functional for at least 5-10 years. This makes sure that the replacement of missing teeth does not become a repeated expense. Of 579 identified articles, 15 met the inclusion criteria for systematic review. Missing teeth replacement materials are divided into two groups: porcelain fused to metal and all ceramics. Data related to survival rates as well as the most common mode of failure is observed from both groups. It was observed that porcelain fused to metal prostheses had an approximately 99.5% survival rate and an approximately 92% survival rate for all-ceramic tooth-supported prostheses after five years of insertion. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) prostheses had a better survival rate after five years of insertion as compared to all-ceramic prostheses. Porcelain fused to metal should be the treatment of choice for dentists and patients when missing teeth need to be fixed.

PURPOSE
The use of distal cantilevers in fixed implant-supported prostheses is often discussed in dental literature in relation to implant restorations. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature in an effort to identify factors related to the long-term success of distal cantilevers. In addition, a more traditional review was conducted to determine complications associated with this type of prosthetic design.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A systematic literature review was conducted of all published articles identified through a search of MEDLINE from January 1980 through June 2011 using the terms "crestal bone loss," "dental implants," "distal cantilevers," "marginal bone loss," and "periodontal disease." An initial review was conducted of titles and a second review was performed using full abstracts. Articles were thus identified to assess studies that met the inclusion criteria that described fixed complete dental prostheses utilizing distal cantilevers. In vivo studies were included for data extraction while in vitro and animal studies were used for descriptions of clinical or mechanical performance.
RESULTS
Following the method described, from an initial identification of 49 studies, a total of 14 human clinical studies were found that met the inclusion criteria and provided data associated with clinical performance. An additional 5 studies detailed in vitro research. It was noted that the majority of studies lacked specific data but, nonetheless, provided subjective and objective information regarding the use of cantilevers. The follow-up period of human studies ranged from 1 to 10 years. Weighted averages demonstrate a prosthetic survival rate of 95% during a follow-up period of 7.3 ± 2.6 years. The descriptive studies demonstrate that the most frequent complication was screw loosening, which was observed equally in virtually all studies, even if controlled torque was used to connect abutments and prostheses. Porcelain chipping and esthetic veneer fracture were described, although data associated with these occurrences were not available for systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on 19 articles (including 14 human studies), it was difficult to derive data-based conclusions regarding the use of cantilever prostheses other than an approximate 95% prosthetic survival rate. Subjective and objective information from these studies demonstrated a distinct preference for the use of distal cantilever prostheses, as few risks are associated with these prostheses. Careful evaluation of the studies shows that cantilevers provide a treatment option without a high risk of complications.
