Intrusive luxation is a severe form of dental trauma and there is no consensus regarding its management for permanent teeth. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to identify the appropriate treatment for teeth with intrusive luxation. The PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, US Clinical Trials, and ISRCTN Registry electronic databases were used to search for articles in English and unpublished studies without a date limit. Eligible studies evaluated periodontal results (root resorption as the primary outcome; marginal bone defects and/or pulpal changes as secondary outcomes) after spontaneous re-eruption (SRE), orthodontic repositioning (ORP), or surgical repositioning (SRP) for patients with one or more traumatically intruded permanent teeth. Risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to compare treatments. The meta-analysis revealed no significant difference (P>0.05) between SRP and SRE for root resorption. For secondary outcomes, SRE was significantly better than SRP and ORP (P<0.05). Subgroup analyses showed no significant differences among treatments in teeth with completely formed roots (P>0.05) and a better prognosis when SRE was performed in teeth with incompletely formed roots (P<0.05). The available evidence does not allow us to conclude on the best treatment for traumatically intruded teeth. More reliable evidence is needed.

PURPOSE
Anterior open bite is defined by the lack of incisal contact between the teeth in centric relation. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anterior open in children and adolescents.
METHODS
This systematic review included a search in the databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, Google Scholar, and ProQuest. The acronym PECOS was considered: (P) children and adolescents, (E) presence of anterior open bite, (C) not applicable, (O) prevalence, and (S) observational studies. The risk of bias assessment was carried out using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. The prevalence meta-analyses were performed using MedCalc software. The certainty of the evidence was determined with the GRADE approach.
RESULTS
26 studies were included. Eleven studies were judged at low, seven at moderate, and eight at high risk of bias. The overall prevalence of anterior open bite was 16.52% (95% CI 12.34-21.17) in children and adolescents. The prevalence was 19.38% (95% CI 13.77-25.69) in South America. The prevalence of anterior open bite was 22.67% (95% CI 16.56-29.43) among females and 16.99% (95% CI 11.77-22.94) among males. The prevalence of anterior open bite was 18.84% (95% CI 13.88-24.38) in the primary dentition, and 14.26% (95% CI 7.67-22.46) in the mixed dentition. The overall certainty of the evidence was very low.
CONCLUSION
The overall prevalence of anterior open bite was 16.52% in children and adolescents aged 2-16 years. Giving the limitations of a prevalence meta-analysis, the extrapolation of the results should be cautious.

OBJECTIVES
The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the rates of survival and success and the complications related to autotransplantation of teeth with incomplete root formation. Additionally, we attempted to identify the prognostic factors that influence the outcome of tooth autotransplantation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A literature search for all data published until July 2016 was conducted. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were specified. Risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle checklist. Meta-analysis was performed by using the DerSimonian-Laird random effect model. The 1-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates and the weighted estimated survival, success, and complication rates per year were calculated.
RESULTS
Thirty-two studies were included for analysis. The survival rates reported after 1, 5, and 10 years were 97.4, 97.8, and 96.3%, respectively. The annual weighted estimated survival rate (98.2%), success rate (96.6%), and complication rates in terms of ankylosis (2.0%), root resorption (2.9%), and pulp necrosis (3.3%) were analyzed. No firm conclusions could be drawn with respect to the prognostic factors due to insufficient evidence of high quality.
CONCLUSION
The survival and success rates of autotransplantation of teeth with incomplete root formation were high (> 95%), with a low rate of complications (< 5%).
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
Current evidence from the literature on autotransplantation of teeth with incomplete root formation shows favorable survival and success rates and low complication rates, indicating it is a reliable treatment option.

OBJECTIVES
The conventional radiotherapy protocol to treat head-and-neck cancer is usually followed by tooth-decay onset. Radiation impact on mineralized tooth structures is not well-understood. This systematic review aimed to collect the recorded effects of therapeutic radiation on tooth chemical, structural and mechanical properties, in relation with their means of investigation.
DATA
Systematic search (January 01 2012 - September 30 2021) terms were "Radiotherapy", "Radiation effects", "Dental enamel", "Dentin", "Human" and "Radiotherapy" NOT "Laser".
SOURCES
PubMed, DOSS and Embase databases were searched.
STUDY SELECTION
Selected studies compared dental enamel, coronal and root dentin properties before and after in vitro or in vivo irradiation up to 80 Gy.
RESULTS
The systematic search identified 353 different articles, with 28 satisfying inclusion criteria. Their reference lists provided two more. Twenty-two studies evaluated dental enamel evolution, nine assessed coronal dentin and eight concerned root dentin. Coronal and root dentin results indicate a major impact of the radiation on their organic matrix. Dental enamel's chemical properties are less modified. Enamel and root dentin's hardness are decreased by therapeutic radiation, but no consensus arises for coronal dentin.
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings revealed some interesting information about enzymatic degradation mechanisms of dentin organic matrix and highlighted that dental hard-tissue characterization requires highly specific expertise in materials science. That scientific knowledge is necessary to design suitable protocols, adequately analyze the obtained data, and, thus, provide relevant conclusions.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT
Better knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms involved in the degradation of enamel and dentin would enable development of new preventive and therapeutic methods for improved medical care of patients undergoing radiotherapy.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to document the disparity in dental caries experiences among indigenous and nonindigenous populations globally by measuring dental caries prevalence and severity. An electronic database (MEDLINE) was initially searched using relevant keywords. This was followed by use of the search string in the following electronic databases: Scopus, EBSCOhost, Cochrane, and Open Grey. Two independent reviewers conducted the study search and screening, quality assessment, and data extraction, which was facilitated using JBI SUMARI software. The primary outcome was the decayed missing filled teeth (DMFT) score and dental caries prevalence. Subgroup analysis was done by country of publication to identify causes of heterogeneity. Forest plots were used with the standardized mean difference (SMD) and publication bias was assessed using the Egger test with funnel plot construction. For the final review, 43 articles were selected and 34 were meta-analyzed. The pooled mean DMFT for both the permanent dentition (SMD = 0.26; 95% CI 0.13-0.39) and deciduous dentition (SMD = 0.67; 95% CI 0.47-0.87) was higher for the Indigenous population than for the general population. Indigenous populations experienced more decayed teeth (SMD = 0.44; 95% CI 0.25-0.62), a slightly higher number of missing teeth (SMD = 0.11< 95% CI -0.05 to 0.26), and lesser filled teeth (SMD = -0.04; 95% CI -0.20 to 0.13) than their nonindigenous counterparts. The prevalence of dental caries (SMD = 0.27; 95% CI 0.13-0.41) was higher among indigenous people. Globally, indigenous populations have a higher caries prevalence and severity than nonindigenous populations. The factors which have led to such inequities need to be examined.

BACKGROUND
The authors studied the effects of nonnutritive sucking behavior (NNSB) on malocclusions through a systematic review of association (etiology).
TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED
The authors performed a 3-step search strategy, including electronic searches. Studies of healthy participants with a history of active or previous NNSB, for whom specific malocclusion outcomes had been assessed, were eligible for inclusion. The authors considered before-and-after studies, prospective and retrospective (longitudinal) studies, case-control studies, and analytical cross-sectional studies. They excluded reviews, text- and opinion-based articles, conference abstracts, case reports, case-series, and descriptive cross-sectional studies. The authors, using standardized instruments, independently assessed methodological quality and extracted data from the included studies. In situations for which there were sufficient studies, the authors conducted meta-analyses using the random-effects model, supplemented with the fixed-effects model in situations for which statistical heterogeneity was less than 50%, which the authors assessed using the I statistic.
RESULTS
The authors included 15 identified studies. They found that NNSB was associated with varying risks of developing malocclusions. Pacifier suckers are less likely to develop an increased overjet compared with digit suckers, although the results of a meta-analysis of 7 studies whose investigators had assessed posterior crossbite in the primary dentition demonstrated a significant association with pacifier sucking over digit sucking (n = 5,560; risk ratio, 1.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.18-1.70; P = .0001). Longer duration of NNSB was associated with an increased risk of developing malocclusions. Across-study heterogeneity likely resulted from methodological and sample size differences.
CONCLUSIONS
The authors of this study have confirmed the association between NNSB and the development of malocclusions. This study provides the highest level of evidence on this topic. Pacifiers were associated with a higher risk of developing most malocclusion features when compared with digit sucking.
PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS
Though malocclusions are of multifactorial etiology, clinicians should inform parents and caregivers about the dental risks of NNSB, an environmental factor that is modifiable. NNSB should be discouraged in order to avoid the development of malocclusions. Future studies should adopt standardized, universally agreed and accepted definitions and classifications when measuring and reporting orthodontic outcome measures. This will help achieve across-study homogeneity.

Data on the prevalence of tooth wear among children and adolescents are inconsistent. Given the impact of extensive tooth wear for over a lifetime, evidence on the extent is required. The aim was to systematically review the literature on the prevalence of tooth wear in children and adolescents. A PubMed literature search (1980-2008) used the keywords 'tooth' AND 'wear'; 'dental' AND 'attrition' AND 'prevalence'; 'dental' AND 'wear' AND 'prevalence'; 'erosion AND prevalence' AND 'abrasion AND prevalence'. Following exclusion criteria, 29 papers were reviewed using established review methods. There was a total of 45,186 subjects (smallest study 80 and largest study 17,047 subjects) examined from thirteen multiple random clusters, eight multiple convenience clusters and eight convenience clusters. Nine different tooth wear indices were used, but the common denominator among studies was dentin exposure as an indicator of severe wear. Forest plots indicated substantial heterogeneity of the included studies. Prevalence of wear involving dentin ranged from 0 to 82% for deciduous teeth in children up to 7 years; regression analysis showed age and wear to be significantly related. Most of the studies in the permanent dentition showed low dentin exposure, a few reported high prevalence (range 0-54%); age and wear were not related (regression analysis). The results of this systematic review indicate that the prevalence of tooth wear leading to dentin exposure in deciduous teeth increases with age. Increase in wear of permanent teeth with age in adolescents up to 18 years old was not substantiated.

The periodontium has important proprioceptive receptors that prevent teeth from using excessive occlusal forces during chewing. There are other receptors from adjacent tissues that replace periodontal ones when teeth are extracted and rehabilitated with prosthesis, although they seem to be less effective. Psychophysical studies investigate tactile sensibility thresholds, which are useful to measure this masticatory efficiency in different prosthetic rehabilitations. There are two types of sensibility depending on the receptors that are activated during these studies: active and passive tactile sensibility. The purpose of this study is to obtain active and passive tactile sensibility threshold figures in natural dentition and prosthetic rehabilitations so we can compare them and understand how this sensibility works in different situations. We performed a systematic review of the available literature, following PRISMA guidelines and including articles from 2004 to 2021 in the MEDLINE database. Only 10 articles were included in this investigation as they provided concrete threshold figures. The mean values of active tactile sensibility thresholds in complete dentures, implant prosthesis and natural dentition are 64 µ, 23.3 µ and 16.1 µ, respectively. The mean values of passive tactile sensibility thresholds in implant prosthesis and natural dentition are 6.7 N and 0.8 N, respectively. Implant prosthesis have lower thresholds, that are very close to those present in natural dentition, than complete dentures due to an increased tactile sensibility. Active tactile sensibility thresholds present fewer differences between values than passive tactile ones; as these are only influenced by receptors from periodontal or periimplant tissues.

OBJECTIVE
This study compares the physical properties and clinical performance of short fiber reinforced composites (SFRC) to those of particulate-filled resin-based composites (PFRC) for class I and II direct restorations in permanent dentition.
METHODS
Systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using PubMed, Embase (Elsevier), and Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source (EBSCO) databases. The outcomes evaluated were physical properties including flexural strength, flexural modulus, elastic modulus, microhardness, shrinkage, fracture toughness, degree of conversion, and depth of cure. Clinical performance was evaluated with a systematic review.
RESULTS
The meta-analyses favored SFRC for flexural strength and fracture toughness compared to every PFRC subgroup, with a high quality of evidence. For all other properties, the meta-analyses favored SFRC to overall PFRC, with some non-significant differences with certain PFRC subgroups. The most recent clinical trial showed SFRC performed similarly to PFRC, however older studies suggest inferior surface texture and discoloration of SFRC compared to PFRC.
CONCLUSION
This study can aid dental professionals in clinical decision making, supporting that SFRC offers improved physical properties, especially fracture resistance and flexural strength, compared to PFRC.

The present meta-analysis aimed to describe the methods to determine the working length in primary teeth pulpectomy, also evaluating and comparing their reliability. A systematic review was performed following the PRISMA Statement. The electronic search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Web of Science. After the screening protocol, a number of 14 studies were included in the qualitative analysis, while seven were included in the quantitative one. The mean working length determined by the electronic apex locator was 11.8 mm (9.0-15.55), while 12.42 mm (11.0-13.52) and 12.3 mm (9.73-15.93) were the mean working length observed with the conventional radiography and the digital radiography, respectively. No statistically significant difference was detected in quantitative analysis between the investigated methods. The present meta-analysis showed that electronic apex locator, conventional radiography and digital radiography are similar in determining working length in primary teeth.
