This article seeks to evaluate the association of iron, vitamin A and zinc deficiencies with linear growth retardation. A systematic review of electronic databases in PubMed, LILACS and SciELO was conducted. Scientific papers published between January 1995 and March 2010 were selected, inserting the key words: (growth OR nutritional status) AND (child, preschool OR infant) AND (zinc AND iron AND vitamin A) OR (zinc AND iron) OR (zinc AND vitamin A) OR (iron AND vitamin A). Fourteen observational design studies were reviewed. In the cohort studies (two), one indicated a statistical association between iron levels and stunting; and the other revealed a statistical association between serum ferritin concentrations and an increase in height. Ten cross-sectional studies investigated the statistical association between micronutrient deficiencies and stunting, three of which resulted in an association with iron, two with vitamin A and none with zinc. Elucidation of the association between stunting and iron, vitamin A and zinc deficiencies involves difficulties of a biological nature and also related to the magnitude of these deficiencies, indicating the importance of a methodological standardization of the studies.

BACKGROUND
Helminth infections and micronutrient deficiencies are highly prevalent in developing countries. Neither condition typically causes overt disease, but they do lead to indirect morbidity such as impaired physical and cognitive development.
OBJECTIVE
We aimed to systematically review current evidence on the relation of helminth infections with micronutrient status in school-age children worldwide.
DESIGN
We included both observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We applied a random-effects meta-analysis to estimate 1) cross-sectional associations between helminths and micronutrient status, 2) effects of anthelminthic treatment on micronutrient status, and 3) effects of micronutrient supplementation on helminth infection and reinfection.
RESULTS
Meta-analyses of observational studies showed an association between helminth infections and serum retinol [standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.30; 95% CI: -0.48, -0.13] but not serum ferritin (SMD: 0.00; 95% CI: -0.7, 0.7). Conversely, meta-analyses of anthelminthic treatment RCTs showed a positive effect on ferritin (SMD: 0.16; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.22) but not retinol (SMD: 0.04; 95% CI: -0.06, 0.14). The number of studies on micronutrients other than ferritin and retinol was not sufficient for pooling. Meta-analyses of micronutrient-supplementation RCTs showed only a modest protective effect for multimicronutrient interventions on helminth infection and reinfection rates (OR: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.61, 0.97).
CONCLUSIONS
In this review, we show evidence of distinct associations between helminth infections and micronutrients in school-age children. More studies are needed on micronutrients other than iron and vitamin A and on possible helminth species-specific effects. A thorough comprehension of the interplay between helminth infections and micronutrients will help guide integrated and sustainable intervention strategies in affected children worldwide.

Diet related non-communicable diseases (NCDs), as well as micronutrient deficiencies, are of widespread and growing importance to public health. Authorities are developing programs to improve nutrient intakes via foods. To estimate the potential health and economic impact of these programs there is a wide variety of models. The aim of this review is to evaluate existing models to estimate the health and/or economic impact of nutrition interventions with a focus on reducing salt and sugar intake and increasing vitamin D, iron, and folate/folic acid intake. The protocol of this systematic review has been registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO: CRD42016050873). The final search was conducted on PubMed and Scopus electronic databases and search strings were developed for salt/sodium, sugar, vitamin D, iron, and folic acid intake. Predefined criteria related to scientific quality, applicability, and funding/interest were used to evaluate the publications. In total 122 publications were included for a critical appraisal: 45 for salt/sodium, 61 for sugar, 4 for vitamin D, 9 for folic acid, and 3 for iron. The complexity of modelling the health and economic impact of nutrition interventions is dependent on the purpose and data availability. Although most of the models have the potential to provide projections of future impact, the methodological challenges are considerable. There is a substantial need for more guidance and standardization for future modelling, to compare results of different studies and draw conclusions about the health and economic impact of nutrition interventions.

The relationship between thyroid hormones metabolism and trace element levels has biological plausibility; however, previous reports that compared trace element levels in patients with hypothyroidism and healthy individuals yielded conflicting results. Therefore, the aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate the association between selected trace elements (i.e., selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb)), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations in patients with hypothyroidism and healthy controls. Electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Science Direct, were searched systematically until September 2019. Thirty-two observational studies were included in the final analyses. Hedges' g tests were used to estimate effect sizes, as trace element concentrations were reported using different measurement units across the studies. Selenium (Hedges' g = - 0.52; 95% CI = [- 1.05, - 0.002]; P = 0.049) and Zn (Hedges' g = - 0.86; 95% CI = [- 1.66, - 0.06]; P = 0.035) concentrations were significantly lower, whereas Pb concentrations were significantly higher (Hedges' g = 0.34; 95% CI = [0.10, 0.59]; P = 0.006) in patients with hypothyroidism compared with healthy controls. There were no differences in the concentrations of Fe, Cu, Mn, and Mg between the groups. Patients with hypothyroidism exhibited lower Se and Zn and increased Pb concentrations compared with healthy controls. High-quality studies with larger sample sizes are required to explicate the link between trace element status and hypothyroidism.

Leishmaniasis is a worldwide prevalent parasitic infection caused by different species of the genus Leishmania. Clinically, the disease divided into three main forms, including visceral leishmaniasis (VL), cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL). There is no vaccine for human leishmaniasis and their treatment is challenging. Trace elements (TEs) alteration, including the selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), ron (Fe), and magnesium (Mg) have been detected in patients with CL and VL as well as canine leishmaniasis. Because TEs play a pivotal role in the immune system, and host immune responses have crucial roles in defense against leishmaniasis, this systematic review aimed to summarize data regarding TEs alteration in human and animal leishmaniasis as well as the role of these elements as an adjuvant for treatment of leishmaniasis. In a setting of systematic review, we found 29 eligible articles (any date until October 1, 2020) regarding TEs in human CL (N = 12), human VL (N = 4), canine leishmaniasis (N = 3), and treatment of leishmaniasis based on TEs (N = 11), which one study examined the TEs level both in CL and VL patients. Our analysis demonstrated a significantly decreased level of Fe, Zn, and Se among human CL and canine leishmaniasis, and Zn and Fe in patients with VL. In contrast, an increased level of Cu in CL patients and Cu and Mg in VL patients and canine leishmaniasis was observed. Treatment of CL based zinc supplementation revealed enhancement of wound healing and diminished scar formation in human and experimentally infected animals. The results of this systematic review indicate that the TEs have important roles in leishmaniasis, which could be assessed as a prognosis factor in this disease. It is suggested that TEs could be prescribed as an adjuvant for the treatment of CL and VL patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Despite enduring efforts in Indonesia to eliminate anemia in pregnancy, it remains a major nutritional problem. Its nutritional contributors were reevaluated.
METHODS
A meta-analysis of reports on anemia during pregnancy in Indonesia from January 2001 to December 2019 in the PubMed and ProQuest databases was conducted. Pooled ORs were obtained in fixed- and random-effects models. Funnel plots and Egger's and Begg's tests were used to evaluate publication bias. Review Manager 5.3 and Stata version 14.2 were used for analysis.
RESULTS
A total of 2,474 articles were appraised. Systematic review and meta-analysis were performed on 10 studies including 4,077 participants. Chronic energy deficiency had the highest OR for the risk of anemia (3.81 [95% CI: 2.36-6.14]) followed by greater parity (OR=2.66 [95% CI: 1.20-5.89]), low education level (OR=2.56 [95% CI: 1.04-6.28]), and limited health knowledge (OR=1.70 [95% CI: 1.17-2.49]), whereas older age and inadequate iron supplementation were not apparently associated with maternal anemia (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSION
Future policies and strategic action to reduce nutritional anemia during pregnancy in Indonesia should increase emphasis on local nutritional epidemiology to establish the pathogenesis of anemia and the validity of stand-alone single-nutrient interventions. Attention to chronic energy deficiency as a barrier to preventing anemia in pregnancy may be necessary to enable health workers and women at risk to be better informed in their efforts.

BACKGROUND
Micronutrients play roles in strengthening and maintaining immune function, but their supplementation and/or deficiency effects on respiratory tract infections are inconclusive. This review aims to systematically assess the associations between micronutrient supplementation or deficiency, with novel coronavirus incidence and disease severity.
METHODS
Systematic literature searches conducted in five electronic databases identified 751 unique studies, of which 33 studies (five supplementation studies, one supplementation and deficiency study, and 27 deficiency studies) were eventually included in this review. Proportions of incidence and severity outcomes in each group, and adjusted summary statistics with their relevant 95% confidence intervaIs (CI) were extracted. Data from 19 studies were pooled in meta-analysis using the generic inverse variance method.
FINDINGS
A total of 360,346 patients across 16 countries, with a mean age between 32 and 87.7 years, were involved across 33 studies. All studies were on COVID-19 infections. In individuals without micronutrient deficiency, there was a significant reduction on odds of COVID-19 incidence (pooled OR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.18, 0.78), and ICU admissions or severe/critical disease onset when combined as a severity outcome (pooled OR: 0.26, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.89). Insignificant protective effects were observed on other outcome measures, namely mortality, ICU admission, progression to respiratory-related complications, severe/critical disease onset or requiring respiratory support and hospitalization rate.
CONCLUSION
The absence of micronutrient deficiency significantly reduced COVID-19 incidence and clinical deterioration in hospitalized patients. Usage of micronutrients as prophylaxis and complementary supplement in therapeutic management of COVID-19 patients may be a promising and cost-effective approach warranting in-depth investigation.

BACKGROUND
Foot ulcers in people with diabetes are non-healing, or poorly healing, partial, or full-thickness wounds below the ankle. These ulcers are common, expensive to manage and cause significant morbidity and mortality. The presence of a wound has an impact on nutritional status because of the metabolic cost of repairing tissue damage, in addition to the nutrient losses via wound fluid. Nutritional interventions may improve wound healing of foot ulcers in people with diabetes.
OBJECTIVES
To evaluate the effects of nutritional interventions on the healing of foot ulcers in people with diabetes.
SEARCH METHODS
In March 2020 we searched the Cochrane Wounds Specialised Register; the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL); Ovid MEDLINE; Ovid Embase and EBSCO CINAHL Plus. We also searched clinical trials registries for ongoing and unpublished studies, and scanned reference lists of relevant included studies as well as reviews, meta-analyses and health technology reports to identify additional studies. There were no restrictions with respect to language, date of publication or study setting.
SELECTION CRITERIA
We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effect of nutritional interventions on the healing of foot ulcers in people with diabetes.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Two review authors, working independently, assessed included RCTs for their risk of bias and rated the certainty of evidence using GRADE methodology, using pre-determined inclusion and quality criteria.
MAIN RESULTS
We identified nine RCTs (629 participants). Studies explored oral nutritional interventions as follows: a protein (20 g protein per 200 mL bottle), 1 kcal/mL ready-to-drink, nutritional supplement with added vitamins, minerals and trace elements; arginine, glutamine and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate supplement; 220 mg zinc sulphate supplements; 250 mg magnesium oxide supplements; 1000 mg/day omega-3 fatty acid from flaxseed oil; 150,000 IU of vitamin D, versus 300,000 IU of vitamin D; 250 mg magnesium oxide plus 400 IU vitamin E and 50,000 IU vitamin D supplements. The comparator in eight studies was placebo, and in one study a different dose of vitamin D. Eight studies reported the primary outcome measure of ulcer healing; only two studies reported a measure of complete healing. Six further studies reported measures of change in ulcer dimension, these studies reported only individual parameters of ulcer dimensions (i.e. length, width and depth) and not change in ulcer volume. All of the evidence identified was very low certainty. We downgraded it for risks of bias, indirectness and imprecision. It is uncertain whether oral nutritional supplement with 20 g protein per 200 mL bottle, 1 kcal/mL, nutritional supplement with added vitamins, minerals and trace elements, increases the proportion of ulcers healed at six months more than placebo (risk ratio (RR) 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.42 to 1.53). It is also uncertain whether arginine, glutamine and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate supplement increases the proportion of ulcers healed at 16 weeks compared with placebo (RR 1.09, 95% CI 0.85 to 1.40). It is uncertain whether the following interventions change parameters of ulcer dimensions over time when compared with placebo; 220 mg zinc sulphate supplement containing 50 mg elemental zinc, 250 mg magnesium oxide supplement, 1000 mg/day omega-3 fatty acid from flaxseed oil supplement, magnesium and vitamin E co-supplementation and vitamin D supplementation. It is also uncertain whether 150,000 IU of vitamin D, impacts ulcer dimensions when compared with 300,000 IU of vitamin D. Two studies explored some of the secondary outcomes of interest for this review. It is uncertain whether oral nutritional supplement with 20 g protein per 200 mL bottle, 1 kcal/mL, nutritional supplement with added vitamins, minerals and trace elements, reduces the number of deaths (RR 0.96, 95% CI 0.06 to 14.60) or amputations (RR 4.82, 95% CI 0.24 to 95.88) more than placebo. It is uncertain whether arginine, glutamine and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate supplement increases health-related quality of life at 16 weeks more than placebo (MD -0.03, 95% CI -0.09 to 0.03). It is also uncertain whether arginine, glutamine and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate supplement reduces the numbers of new ulcers (RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.71 to 1.51), or amputations (RR 0.66, 95% CI 0.16 to 2.69) more than placebo. None of the included studies reported the secondary outcomes cost of intervention, acceptability of the intervention (or satisfaction) with respect to patient comfort, length of patient hospital stay, surgical interventions, or osteomyelitis incidence. One study exploring the impact of arginine, glutamine and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate supplement versus placebo did not report on any relevant outcomes.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
Evidence for the impact of nutritional interventions on the healing of foot ulcers in people with diabetes compared with no nutritional supplementation, or compared with a different dose of nutritional supplementation, remains uncertain, with eight studies showing no clear benefit or harm. It is also uncertain whether there is a difference in rates of adverse events, amputation rate, development of new foot ulcers, or quality of life, between nutritional interventions and placebo. More research is needed to clarify the impact of nutritional interventions on the healing of foot ulcers in people with diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
The micronutrient status of those receiving long-term enteral nutrition (EN) is poorly characterised. This systematic review was undertaken to determine prevalence of micronutrient deficiency in those receiving EN; the impact of the route of feeding; whether underlying disease or clinical factors were associated with micronutrient status; and the efficacy of interventions utilised to treat identified micronutrient deficiency.
METHODS
Electronic databases (CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science) were searched to June 2021 for publications of primary investigation of micronutrient status in adults or children (>5yrs) receiving EN for >2 months in their usual residence. Independent assessment of compliance with inclusion criteria (Covidence®), data extraction of predefined data points, assessment of basis (Academy of Dietetics Quality Checklist) and certainty of evidence (GRADE) was assessed by at least two authors. RESULTS
Thirty-one studies (n = 744) met inclusion criteria. Deficiency was reported for copper, zinc, selenium, beta-carotene, and vitamins A, D and E: Only copper, zinc and selenium were associated with physical/haematological manifestations of deficiency. Jejunal feeding was associated with the development of copper deficiency and often required gastric or parenteral replacement to resolve the issue. Circumstances leading to deficiency included receiving feed products formulated with inadequate amounts of the implicated nutrient, low feed product volumes in the context of low macronutrient requirements, and nutritional decline prior to commencement of EN. Potential confounding factors such as inflammation were rarely accounted for. No studies investigated the contribution of underlying clinical condition on micronutrient status, and no other clinical or demographic features appeared to impact outcomes. Reported methods for treating identified deficiencies were usually successful in reversing deficiency symptoms. The certainty of evidence is very low, and the level of bias moderate to high.
CONCLUSION
While the evidence is very uncertain about the effect of long-term enteral feeding on the development of micronutrient deficiencies, clinicians should be alert to the possibility of micronutrient deficiency developing in long-term EN fed patients. Those who may be at increased risk are those receiving nutrition into the jejunum, those who meet macronutrient requirements in low volumes of EN product, and those commencing EN in a nutritionally deplete state. Further research and surveillance of micronutrient status with contemporary EN products and practices is required.

Barriers to and Facilitators of the Implementation of a Micronutrient Powder Program for Children: A Systematic Review Based on the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.
BACKGROUND
As one of the most cost-effective investments for improving child nutrition, micronutrient powder (MNP) has been widely used in many countries to underpin the Sustainable Development Goals, yet challenges remain regarding its implementation on a large scale. However, few studies have explored the factors that facilitate or impede the implementation process using implementation science theories and frameworks. To address this gap, we adopted the Consolidated Framework of Implementation Research (CFIR) and conducted a systematic review of studies on the implementation barriers to and facilitators of MNP interventions.
METHOD
Five publication databases, including EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, were searched for studies on the influencing factors of MNP interventions. Based on the CFIR framework, the facilitators and barriers for the MNP program implementation reported in the included studies were extracted and synthesized by five domains: intervention characteristics, outer setting, inner setting, individual characteristics, and process.
RESULTS
A total of 50 articles were eligible for synthesis. The majority of the studies were conducted in lower-middle-income countries (52%) through the free delivery model (78%). The inner setting construct was the most prominently reported factor influencing implementation, specifically including available resources (e.g., irregular or insufficient MNP supply), structural characteristics (e.g., public-driven community-based approach), and access to information and knowledge (e.g., lack of training for primary-level workers). The facilitators of the engagement of private sectors, external guidelines, and regular program monitoring were also highlighted. On the contrary, monotonous tastes and occasional side effects impede intervention implementation. Additionally, we found that the inner setting had an interrelation with other contributing factors in the MNP program implementation.
CONCLUSION
Our results suggest that MNP program implementation was prominently influenced by the available resources, organizational structure, and knowledge of both providers and users. Mobilizing local MNP suppliers, engaging public-driven free models in conjunction with market-based channels, and strengthening the training for primary-level health workers could facilitate MNP interventions.
