OBJECTIVE
To examine associations between infection during pregnancy and adverse outcomes.
METHODS
We did a systematic review of observational studies. We searched Medline, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and CINAHL up to 11 August 2021. Studies were included if they compared preterm birth, spontaneous abortion, premature rupture of membranes, low birth weight or perinatal death between women with and without . Two reviewers independently assessed articles for inclusion and extracted data. We used random-effects meta-analysis to estimate summary ORs and adjusted ORs, with 95% CIs, where appropriate. Risk of bias was assessed using established checklists.
RESULTS
We identified 116 records and included 10 studies. Women with were more likely to experience preterm birth in univariable analyses (summary unadjusted OR 1.91, 95% CI 1.29 to 2.81, I=0%, 7 studies). The combined adjusted OR was 2.34 (95% CI 1.17 to 4.71, I=0%, 2 studies). For spontaneous abortion, the summary unadjusted OR was 1.00 (95% CI 0.53 to 1.89, I=0%, 6 studies). The adjusted OR in one case-control study was 0.9 (95% CI 0.2 to 3.8). Unadjusted ORs for premature rupture of membranes were 7.62 (95% CI 0.40 to 145.86, 1 study) and for low birth weight 1.07 (95% CI 0.02 to 10.39, 1 study). For perinatal death, the unadjusted OR was 1.07 (95% CI 0.49 to 2.36) in one case-control and 38.42 (95% CI 1.45 to 1021.43) in one cohort study. These two ORs were not combined, owing to heterogeneity. The greatest risk of bias was the failure in most studies to control for confounding.
CONCLUSION
might be associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. Further prospective studies, with adequate control for confounding, are needed to understand the role of in adverse pregnancy outcomes. There is insufficient evidence to indicate routine testing and treatment of asymptomatic in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND
Hyperammonemia syndrome (HS) is a rare post-transplant complication associated with high morbidity and mortality. Its incidence appears to be higher in lung transplant recipients and its pathophysiology is not well understood. In addition to underlying metabolic abnormalities, it is postulated that HS may be associated with Ureaplasma or Mycoplasma spp. lung infections. Management of this condition is not standardized and may include preemptive antimicrobials, renal replacement, nitrogen scavenging, and bowel decontamination therapies, as well as dietary modifications.
METHODS
In this case series, we describe seven HS cases, five of whom had metabolic deficiencies ruled out. In addition, a literature review was performed by searching PubMed following PRISMA-P guidelines. Articles containing the terms "hyperammonemia" and "lung" were reviewed from 1 January 1997 to 31 October 2021.
RESULTS
All HS cases described in our center had positive airway samples for Mycoplasmataceae, neurologic abnormalities and high ammonia levels post-transplant. Mortality in our group (57%) was similar to that published in previous cases. The literature review supported that HS is an early complication post-transplant, associated with Ureaplasma spp. and Mycoplasma hominis infections and of worse prognosis in patients presenting cerebral edema and seizures.
CONCLUSION
This review highlights the need for rapid testing for Ureaplasma spp. and M. hominis after lung transplant, as well as the necessity for future studies to explore potential therapies that may improve outcomes in these patients.

BACKGROUND
The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of genital pathogens, notably Mycoplasma genitalium and Ureaplasma spp., constitutes a significant global threat today. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and trend of changes in MDR mycoplasma and ureaplasma strains.
METHODS
An exhaustive search was performed across the ISI Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases to accumulate relevant studies without restrictions until April 2023. We used event rate and corresponding 95% confidence intervals to determine the frequency of resistance-related mutations and examine the trend of antibiotic resistance changes.
RESULTS
The data from 27 studies, including 24,662 patients across 14 countries, were evaluated. Out of the total studies, 20 focused on M. genitalium infections, and five on Ureaplasma spp. The frequency of resistance-associated mutations to macrolides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones in clinical strains of M. genitalium was 43.5%, 13.1%, and 18.6%, respectively. The prevalence of M. genitalium strains with double resistance and MDR was 11.0% and 17.4%, respectively. The incidence of both double-drug-resistant and MDR strains was higher in the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region than in European and American populations. For Ureaplasma strains, resistance-associated mutations to macrolides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones were 40.8%, 25.7%, and 90.3%, respectively. The rate of antibiotic resistance was higher in the African population compared to the European and WHO Western Pacific Regions. The rate of MDR Ureaplasma infections was 13.2%, with a higher incidence in the African population compared to the WHO Western Pacific and European regions.
CONCLUSION
The proliferation and spread of MDR Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma strains present a significant public health challenge. The situation is indeed alarming, and the rising trend of MDR M. genitalium and MDR Ureaplasma infections suggests that therapies involving macrolides and fluoroquinolones may become less effective.

INTRODUCTION
The relationship between cytokines and refractory mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) in children was conflicting. The aim of the current study was to perform a systematic review to determine the relationship between cytokines and RMPP in children.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION
We searched PubMed, and the search was done on 21 November 2022. This search was limited to human studies, with language restriction of English. Studies were included if they reported the relationship between cytokines and RMPP.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS
A total of 22 relevant full articles were included in the review. TNF-α levels in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and IL-18 levels in the blood samples were likely to be associated with RMPP. IL-2 and IL-4 lost significance regardless in the BALF or blood samples. Additionally, there was no significant difference in IFN-γ levels between RMPP patients and non-refractory mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (NRMPP) patients in the BALF. Patients receiving different treatments had different levels of cytokines.
CONCLUSIONS
This analysis offers evidence linking abnormalities of cytokines with RMPP in children, which may be essential for identifying individuals with RMPP. Large prospective studies are needed for further clarification of roles of cytokines in RMPP.

BACKGROUND
Ovarian cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers with a high mortality rate in women. Published studies indicate that inflammation, DNA damage, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) are the most important risk factors for ovarian cancer and this could be induced and exacerbated by infectious agents such as Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium. The aim of this study was to determine the association between Chlamydia and Mycoplasma infections and the risk of ovarian cancer.
METHODS
We carried out a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar without limitation on publication date. All relevant studies which investigatived probable potential connection between Chlamydia and Mycoplasma infection and development of ovarian cancer were included.
RESULTS
Eighteen studies comprising a total of 8207 patients were evaluated in the study and this showed that the frequency of infection with Chlamydia and Mycoplasma among ovarian cancer patients was 32.6 % and 23 %, respectively. The results suggested that Chlamydia trachomatis infection increased the overall risk for ovarian cancer by 1.344 fold (OR: 1.344; 95 %CI: 1.19-1.50). Moreover, infection with Mycoplasma infections showed a week but not significant increased risk of ovarian cancer (OR: 1.12; 95 %CI: 0.86-1.44). However, the test for heterogeneity was significant among these studies.
CONCLUSION
This study confirmed the clinical relevance of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma infection and development of the ovarian cancer risk, although the significance was marginal and study heterogeneity was significant. This highlights the need for further studies in this area.

BACKGROUND
The pathogenic role of mycoplasmas in the lower respiratory tract (LRT) of dogs is debated, because mycoplasmas can be isolated from both healthy and sick dogs.
OBJECTIVES
To critically assess available data from controlled observational studies on the role of 4 mycoplasma species in LRT disease of dogs.
DESIGN
Systematic review and meta-analyses.
METHODS
Seven electronic databases were searched for relevant publications. Risk of bias was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Meta-analyses, stratified by mycoplasmal species, were performed using a random effects Bayesian model with noninformative priors to estimate pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between Mycoplasma cynos, Mycoplasma canis, Mycoplasma spumans, and Mycoplasma edwardii and LRT disease in dogs.
RESULTS
Five studies were included from 1201 references identified. All studies dealt with M. cynos, whereas 3 dealt with the other mycoplasma species. A significant association was found between M. cynos and LRT disease (Bayesian OR, 3.60; CI, 1.31-10.29). Conversely, M. canis, M. spumans, and M. edwardii were not significantly associated with LRT signs (Bayesian OR, 1.06; CI, 0.10-14.63; Bayesian OR, 3.40; CI, 0.16-54.27; and Bayesian OR, 1.04; CI, 0.05-23.54, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE
Results support a pathogenic role of M. cynos and a commensal role of M. canis and M. edwardii in LRT in dogs. Although the association was not significant based on the CI, the point estimate of the Bayesian OR was relatively high for M. spumans, making its role less clear. Mycoplasma cynos-specific polymerase chain reaction should be considered on samples from dogs with LRT.

OBJECTIVE
To systematically review studies of Mycoplasma genitalium and the association with HIV infection in adults and to summarize the findings in a meta-analysis.
DESIGN
A systematic review and meta-analysis.
METHODS
Epidemiological studies of the association of M. genitalium and HIV infection published prior to June 2008 were identified in a systematic review of the published literature. A random-effects meta-analysis was used to calculate the summary odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Further analyses stratified by geographical area and type of control population, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess between-study heterogeneity and publication bias.
RESULTS
Nineteen eligible studies were identified. The prevalence of M. genitalium ranged from 3.1% to 47.5%. Seventeen studies found that participants with M. genitalium were more likely to be HIV infected, and this association was statistically significant in 12 studies. The summary odds ratio (OR) was 2.01 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.44-2.79]. The association was stronger in sub-group analyses among studies in sub-Saharan Africa (OR = 2.60, 95% CI = 2.17-3.11) and studies with healthy control populations (OR = 2.57, 95% CI = 2.05-3.22). There was strong evidence of between-study heterogeneity among all studies combined; however, between-study heterogeneity was substantially reduced in sub-group analyses. There was no statistical evidence of publication bias.
CONCLUSION
The strong association between M. genitalium and HIV infections in these primarily cross-sectional observational studies highlights the need for longitudinal studies to understand the temporal association between these infections. Testing and treatment of M. genitalium-positive individuals in high-risk populations should be investigated as a potential HIV prevention strategy.

OBJECTIVE To critically assess available data from controlled observational studies on the pathogenic role of Mycoplasma spp in the upper respiratory tract (URT) and lower respiratory tract (LRT) of cats. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. SAMPLE 12 studies. PROCEDURES Seven electronic databases were searched for relevant publications. Risk of bias was assessed via the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Meta-analyses, stratified by URT versus LRT disease, were performed to estimate pooled ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between Mycoplasma isolation and URT or LRT disease. Subanalyses by diagnostic method, sampling site, and environment (shelter vs nonshelter) were planned for studies on URT disease. RESULTS A significant association was found between isolation of mycoplasmal organisms and URT disease (pooled OR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.14 to 2.40) but not LRT disease (pooled OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 0.51 to 4.76). The association with URT disease was only significant when conjunctival or pharyngeal samples from nonshelter cats were analyzed with a Mycoplasma felis-specific PCR assay. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggested that M felis may be a primary pathogen in cats with URT disease, warranting treatment in infected cats. The environment was important to consider when interpreting a mycoplasma-positive sample because of aclinical carriage, especially in shelter cats. Further investigations are needed to determine the role, if any, of mycoplasmal organisms in LRT disease of cats.

Worldwide, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and M. synoviae (MS) are the main agents responsible for chronic respiratory disease in poultry. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate their occurrence. We searched electronic databases to find peer-reviewed publications reporting the molecular detection of MG and MS in poultry and used meta-analysis to estimate their pooled global occurrence (combined flock and individual), aggregating results at the regional and national levels. We performed a subgroup meta-analysis for subpopulations (broilers, layers, breeders and diverse poultry including turkeys, ducks and ostriches) and used meta-regression with categorical modifiers. We retrieved 2294 publications from six electronic databases and included 85 publications from 33 countries that reported 62 studies with 22,162 samples for MG and 48 studies with 26,413 samples for MS. The pooled global occurrence was 38.4% (95% CI: 23.5-54.5) for MS and 27.0% (20.4-34.2) for MG. Among regions, Europe and Central Asia had the lowest occurrence for both pathogens, while MG and MS were highly prevalent in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, respectively. At the national level, MG occurrence was higher in Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, whereas China, Egypt and Ethiopia reported higher values of MS. Among the poultry subpopulations, MS and MG were more prevalent in the breeders and layers (62.6% and 31.2%, respectively) than in diverse poultry. The year of publication, the sample size and the level of ambient air pollution (measured indirectly by PM2.5) were associated with the occurrence of both mycoplasmas. Our study revealed high and heterogeneous occurrence values of MG and MS and justifies the need for early detection and improved control measures to reduce the spread of these pathogens.

OBJECTIVES
To determine the prevalence of resistance to macrolides in Mycoplasma pneumoniae worldwide.
METHODS
Prior to 12 December 2020, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Embase databases were searched for epidemiological studies of M. pneumoniae resistance. Two reviewers independently extracted data from included studies. The extracted data include sampling population, total sampling number, the number of resistant strains and the molecular subtype of resistant strains. The estimate of resistance prevalence was calculated using the random-effects model.
RESULTS
A total of 17 873 strains were obtained from five continents and reported in 98 investigations between 2000 and 2020, with 8836 strains characterized as macrolide resistant. In summary, macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae was most common in Asia (63% [95% CI 56, 69]). In Europe, North America, South America and Oceania, the prevalence was 3% [2, 7], 8.6% [6, 11], 0% and 3.3%, respectively. Over the last 20 years, the prevalence of macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae has remained high in China (81% [73, 87]), with a significant increasing trend in South Korea (4% [1, 9] to 78% [49, 93], P < 0.0001). Furthermore, a point mutation at 2063 from A to G was mostly related to M. pneumoniae macrolide resistance. In terms of clinical outcomes, longer cough (mean difference [MD]: 2.93 [0.26, 5.60]) and febrile days (MD: 1.52 [1.12, 1.92]), and prolonged hospital stays (MD: 0.76 [0.05, 1.46]) might be induced by macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae pneumonia.
CONCLUSIONS
The incidence of macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae varies globally, with eastern Asia having a greater degree of resistance. However, attention is also required in other areas, and antibiotic alternatives should be considered for treatment in high-prevalence countries.
