BACKGROUND
Garlic (Allium sativum) is used as a natural supplement for the treatment of various diseases and disorders because it has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. This systematic review aimed to evaluate in vitro and in vivo effects of garlic against Schistosoma spp.
METHODS
The current study was carried out according to the PRISMA guidelines and registered in the CAMARADES-NC3Rs Preclinical Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Facility [SyRF] database. The literature search was conducted using five databases, including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar, from January 2008 to January 2021. The search was restricted to articles published in the English language. Syntax was performed based on each database tag.
RESULTS
Out of 2,600 studies, 10 met the eligibility criteria for review. The examined parasite in all studies was Schistosoma mansoni. Ten studies (90%) were performed in vivo and one study in vitro. Studies have shown that garlic compounds can activate immune system factors, thereby damaging the parasite structure or its eggs.
CONCLUSION
Given the increase in using plants in the treatment of many diseases and the fact that plants can be a good alternative to chemical drugs in many cases, more comprehensive research is needed to introduce effective medicinal plants to treat diseases such as schistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND
Human echinococcosis is a neglected zoonosis caused by parasites of the genus Echinococcus. The most frequent clinical forms of echinococcosis, cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE), are responsible for a substantial health and economic burden, particularly to low-income societies. Quantitative epidemiology can provide important information to improve the understanding of parasite transmission and hence is an important part of efforts to control this disease. The purpose of this review is to give an insight on factors associated with echinococcosis in animal hosts by summarising significant results reported from epidemiological studies identified through a systematic search.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS
The systematic search was conducted mainly in electronic databases but a few additional records were obtained from other sources. Retrieved entries were examined in order to identify available peer-reviewed epidemiological studies that found significant risk factors for infection using associative statistical methods. One hundred studies met the eligibility criteria and were suitable for data extraction. Epidemiological factors associated with increased risk of E. granulosus infection in dogs included feeding with raw viscera, possibility of scavenging dead animals, lack of anthelmintic treatment and owners' poor health education and indicators of poverty. Key factors associated with E. granulosus infection in intermediate hosts were related to the hosts' age and the intensity of environmental contamination with parasite eggs. E. multilocularis transmission dynamics in animal hosts depended on the interaction of several ecological factors, such as hosts' population densities, host-prey interactions, landscape characteristics, climate conditions and human-related activities.
CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE
Results derived from epidemiological studies provide a better understanding of the behavioural, biological and ecological factors involved in the transmission of this parasite and hence can aid in the design of more effective control strategies.

BACKGROUND
Molecular mechanisms and pathogenesis of schistosomal-associated bladder cancer (SABC), one of the most common malignancies in Africa and parts of the Middle East, is still unclear. Identification of host molecular markers involved in schistosomal related bladder carcinogenesis is of value in prediction of high-risk group, early detection and timely intervention.
METHODS
PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library and African Journals Online databases were systematically searched and reviewed. A total of 63 articles reporting 41 host molecular factors were included in the meta-analysis.
RESULTS
Pooled odds ratio demonstrated associations of p53 expression, telomerase activity and sFas with SABC as compared to other schistosomal patients (p53 expression: OR=9.46, 95%CI=1.14-78.55, p=0.04; telomerase by TERT: OR=37.38, 95%CI=4.17-334.85, p=0.001; telomerase by TRAP: OR=10.36, 95%CI=6.08-17.64, p<0.00001; sFas: OR=34.37, 95%CI=3.32-355.51, p=0.003). In comparison to bladder cancers of other etiology, positive associations were found between SABC and p15 deletion, p16 deletion, telomerase activity and sFas (p15 deletion: OR=4.20, 95%CI=2.58-6.82, p<0.00001; p16 deletion: OR=4.93, 95%CI=2.52-9.65, p<0.00001; telomerase by TERT: OR=3.01, 95%CI=1.51-5.97, p=0.002; telomerase by TRAP: OR=2.66, 95%CI=1.18-6.01, p=0.02; sFas: OR=4.50, 95%CI=1.78-11.40, p=0.001). Other identified associations were reported by few numbers of studies to enable reliable interpretation.
CONCLUSIONS
Variations in gene expression or genomic alterations of some molecular markers in SABC as compared to non-SABC or other schistosomal patients were identified. These suggest minute differences in the pathogenesis and physiological profile of SABC, in relation to non-SABC.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by helminths of the genus with two presentations; one intestinal and another urinary; which depend on the specie of . One of the species that can produce intestinal schistosomiasis is , and the specie that produces urinary schistosomiasis is . Infection can be aggravated by a deficient nutritional status, which negatively impacts the immune system and increases susceptibility to infection. The main objective of this meta-analysis is to determine if a relationship exists between multimicronutrient supplementation and the reduction of infestation with and in children and adolescents. A search was conducted through a scientific literature database, and articles that complied with the pre-established requirements were retrieved. The Review Manager (Rev Man) 5.3 computer program was used for data processing and analysis was carried out with the objective of testing whether the addition of micronutrient supplementation to treatment with broad-spectrum antiparasitic anthelmintic medication has an impact on schistosomiasis infection. Of the 257 initial articles retrieved, eight were included both quantitatively and qualitatively in the meta-analysis. Supplementation reduces infestation with 1.33 times more than placebo. In individuals infested with supplementation is 1.30 times more effective than placebo and for individuals infested with , supplementation is 1.62 times more effective than the placebo. The results show a clear relationship between supplementation and reduction of infestation. The supplementation with micronutrients decreases the presence of in children and adolescents.

Several human genetic variants, HLA antigens and alleles are reportedly linked to post-schistosomal hepatic disorder (PSHD), but the results from these reports are highly inconclusive. In order to estimate overall associations between human genetic variants, HLA antigens, HLA alleles and PSHD, we systematically reviewed and performed a meta-analysis of relevant studies in both post-schistosomal hepatic disorder and post-schistosomal non-hepatic disorder patients. PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, The HuGE Published Literature database, Cochrane Library, and manual search of reference lists of articles published before July 2009 were used to retrieve relevant studies. Two reviewers independently selected articles and extracted data on study characteristics and data regarding the association between genetic variants, HLA antigens, HLA alleles and PSHD in the form of 2×2 tables. A meta-analysis using fixed-effects or random-effects models to pooled odds ratios (OR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated only if more than one study had investigated particular variation. We found 17 articles that met our eligibility criteria. Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum were reported as the species causing PSHD. Since human genetic variants were only investigated in one study, these markers were not assessed by meta-analysis. Thus, only HLA-genes (a total of 66 HLA markers) were conducted in the meta-analysis. Our meta-analysis showed that human leucocyte antigens HLA-DQB1*0201 (OR=2.64, P=0.018), DQB1*0303 (OR=1.93, P=0.008), and DRB1*0901 (OR=2.14, P=0.002) alleles and HLA-A1 (OR=5.10, P=0.001), A2 (OR=2.17, P=0.005), B5 (OR=4.63, P=0.001), B8 (OR=2.99, P=0.02), and B12 (OR=5.49, P=0.005) serotypes enhanced susceptibility to PSHD, whereas HLA-DQA1*0501 (OR=0.29, P≤0.001) and DQB1*0301 (OR=0.58, P=0.007) were protective factors against the disease. We further suggested that the DRB1*0901-DQB1*0201, DRB1*0901-DQB1*0303 and A1-B8 haplotypes enhanced susceptibility to PSHD, whereas DQA1*0501-DQB1*0301 linkage decreased the risk of PSHD. The result improved our understanding of the association between the HLA loci and PSHD with regard to pathogenic or protective T-cells and provided novel evidence that HLA alleles may influence disease severity.

BACKGROUND
By means of meta-analysis of information from all relevant epidemiologic studies, we examined the hypothesis that Schistosoma infection in school-aged children (SAC) is associated with educational loss and cognitive deficits.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS
This review was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42016040052). Medline, Biosis, and Web of Science were searched for studies published before August 2016 that evaluated associations between Schistosoma infection and cognitive or educational outcomes. Cognitive function was defined in four domains-learning, memory, reaction time, and innate intelligence. Educational outcome measures were defined as attendance and scholastic achievement. Risk of bias (ROB) was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to compare cognitive and educational measures for Schistosoma infected /not dewormed vs. uninfected/dewormed children. Sensitivity analyses by study design, ROB, and sequential exclusion of individual studies were implemented. Thirty studies from 14 countries, including 38,992 SAC between 5-19 years old, were identified. Compared to uninfected children and children dewormed with praziquantel, the presence of Schistosoma infection and/or non-dewormed status was associated with deficits in school attendance (SMD = -0.36, 95%CI: -0.60, -0.12), scholastic achievement (SMD = -0.58, 95%CI: -0.96, -0.20), learning (SMD = -0.39, 95%CI: -0.70, -0.09) and memory (SMD = -0.28, 95%CI: -0.52, -0.04) tests. By contrast, Schistosoma-infected/non-dewormed and uninfected/dewormed children were similar with respect to performance in tests of reaction time (SMD = -0.06, 95%CI: -0.42, 0.30) and intelligence (SMD = -0.25, 95%CI: -0.57, 0.06). Schistosoma infection-associated deficits in educational measures were robust among observational studies, but not among interventional studies. The significance of infection-associated deficits in scholastic achievement was sensitive to ROB. Schistosoma infection-related deficits in learning and memory tests were invariant by ROB and study design.
CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE
Schistosoma infection/non-treatment was significantly associated with educational, learning, and memory deficits in SAC. Early treatment of children in Schistosoma-endemic regions could potentially mitigate these deficits.

BACKGROUND
Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini, and Opisthorchis felineus are the three most important human liver fluke species in the Opisthorchiidae family, infecting approximately 25 million people worldwide. Drug treatment is needed to control morbidity and is also useful in lowering transmission. Several drugs used in various regimens are available to treat these infections, but their comparative efficacy is uncertain. We aimed to compare the efficacy in terms of cure rate and egg reduction rate of currently registered drugs against human liver fluke infection.
METHODS
We conducted a systematic review using readily available electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, KoreaMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data) without language restrictions from inception until June 29, 2021. Clinical trials with pairwise comparison of drugs (praziquantel, albendazole, mebendazole, tribendimidine, or combinations of these drugs) against C sinensis, O viverrini, and O felineus were eligible, including trials comparing these drugs or their combinations with placebo. We compared efficacy in terms of cure rate by network meta-analysis. We conducted mixed binomial regression analyses for each species to derive predicted median cure rates for each drug regimen. The models included treatment and infection intensity as fixed factors, year of publication as covariate, and random effects of the different studies assumed to be normally distributed. We also assessed the quality of the included studies. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42018109232).
FINDINGS
Overall, 26 trials from 25 studies were included, of which 18 involved C sinensis, seven studied O viverrini, and one focused on O felineus. These trials included a total of 3340 participants. The two long-term treatment courses against C sinensis infection using 400 mg of albendazole (400 mg twice a day for 5 days and 400 mg twice a day for 7 days) resulted in cure rates of 100%, while two other multiple-dose regimens of albendazole resulted in high predicted cure rates: 300 mg twice a day for 5 days (93·9% [95% CI 49·6-99·6]) and 400 mg twice a day for 3 days (91·0% [50·9-99·0]). The WHO-recommended praziquantel regimen (25 mg/kg three times a day for 2 days) also showed a high predicted cure rate (98·5% [85·4-99·9]) in C sinensis infection, and predicted cure rates were above 90% for several other multiple-dose praziquantel regimens, including 20 mg/kg three times a day for 3 days (97·6% [74·7-99·8]), 14 mg/kg three times a day for 5 days (93·9% [44·8-99·7]), and 20 mg/kg twice a day for 3 days (91·0% [50·9-99·0]). In O viverrini infection, the regimen of 50 mg/kg and 25 mg/kg of praziquantel given in a single day showed the highest predicted cure rate (93·8% [85·7-97·5]), while a single dose of 50 mg/kg praziquantel also resulted in a high predicted cure rate (92·1% [64·9-98·6]). The single dose of 400 mg tribendimidine showed a high predicted cure rate of 89·8% (77·5-95·8). A low quality of evidence was demonstrated in most studies, especially those published before 2000. Selection bias due to poor random sequence generation and allocation concealment was high, and performance and detection biases were frequently unreported.
INTERPRETATION
Praziquantel shows high efficacy against clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis. Tribendimidine might serve as a treatment alternative and warrants further investigation. Although albendazole is efficacious when long treatment schedules (5 days or 7 days) are applied, limited size of studies and high risk of bias affect the interpretation of results. More high-quality studies are needed to promote the establishment of treatment guidelines for human liver fluke infection.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic tissue infection caused by larval cysts of the tapeworm Taenia solium. These larval cysts infect brain, muscle, or other tissue, and are a major cause of adult-onset seizures in most low-income countries with tropical climate. Prevalence it's around 50 million people. Although cardiovascular system is not the most affected, this disease can also be associated with multiple and randomly distributed cysts in the subpericardium, subendocardium and myocardium in up to 25% of infected patients. Most cardiac cysticercosis' cases are asymptomatic, but it can manifest with ventricular arrhythmias and conduction disorders. Area Covered: The "Neglected Tropical Diseases and other Infectious Diseases affecting the Heart" (NET-Heart project) is an initiative by the Emerging Leaders group of the Interamerican Society of Cardiology to systematically review all these endemic conditions affecting the heart. A systematic review was conducted following preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis guidelines and including articles published in MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, PubMed and LILACS databases. A total of 41 papers were included in this review. Expert Opinion: In the areas of greatest prevalence, unhealthiness and poverty favor the development of this disease, which highlights the need to establish global health policies that reduce morbidity and mortality, economic losses of the affected population, and health costs related to hospitalizations for cardiovascular involvement. Authors provide an algorithm to evaluate the possibility of Cysticercosis' cardiovascular complications.

BACKGROUND
Bovine cysticercosis (BCC) is an infection of cattle with the metacestode stage of Taenia saginata, the beef tapeworm, which causes taeniosis in humans. BCC is responsible for considerable economic losses in the meat sector worldwide. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes the prevalence, risk factors and treatment efforts made so far on T. saginata infections in Ethiopia, providing a detailed analysis of different factors influencing the varying prevalence estimates in Ethiopia to gain more insight into the occurrence and risk factors of T. saginata taeniosis and cysticercosis to date.
METHODS
A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on data collected from published and grey literature accessed through an electronic database and manual search.
RESULTS
The literature search resulted in 776 outputs of which 132 conformed to the predefined criteria. The average zonal prevalence of meat inspection-based BCC ranged from 2% in Buno-Bedele to 24.6% in Sidama zone. The pooled prevalence of BCC was influenced by the number of muscle/organs inspected, ranging from 3.4% (95% CI: 1.7-5.1%) using fewer predilection sites to 19.4% (95% CI: 13.3-25.4%) using inspection of a maximum number of predilection sites. None of the tested variables were significantly associated with BCC. Questionnaire-based taeniosis ranged between 19.0% in Halaba special woreda to 70.0% in Gedeo zone and stool test-based taeniosis varied from 0.6% in central Tigray to 10.7% in Gurage zone. Questionnaire-based prevalence of taeniosis was higher in people with a frequent raw beef consumption habit (pooled OR, pOR: 10.5, 95% CI: 6.0-17.9), adults (pOR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.7-3.6), men (pOR: 2.8, 95% CI: 2.1-3.6), and Christians (pOR: 2.0, 95% CI: 1.4-2.8) compared to less frequent raw beef consumers, younger people, women and Muslims, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
This review revealed a widespread but variable occurrence of BCC and taeniosis in Ethiopian regions and zones, urging for harmonized and enhanced detection for improved control of the parasite. Accurate prevalence estimates using more sensitive tests, detailed risk factor analysis, as well as data on financial losses are needed to develop effective control strategies for the Ethiopian epidemiologic condition.

OBJECTIVE
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of fascioliasis in humans, cattle, sheep, and goats, done by a systematic review in Iran.
METHODS
Fifty articles were extracted including Iranian papers such as Google scholar, Magiran, Iran Medex, SID, and Pubmed. Out of these, 21 articles were selected for meta-analysis. Essential information for meta-analysis was extracted from papers and archived in Excel software for calculating by statistical analysis. The variance of each study was obtained using the binomial distribution. Heterogeneity of the studies was surveyed using I2 index. Data were analyzed using a random effect model.
RESULTS
Of 21 collected papers, 1,275,506 samples from cow (507,152), sheep (454,882), goat (207,925), and human (105,547) had been surveyed in Iran. Eight studies were conducted on humans and 13 on animals. The prevalence rate obtained in humans was 3% with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% (1%-7%). Prevalence rate obtained in cows, sheep, and goats was 13% with CI of 95% (10%-16%). The highest level of prevalence was reported from cities in the North in animals with a prevalence of 14%. The highest level of prevalence was reported from Gilan in humans with a prevalence of 0.1%.
CONCLUSION
The prevalence of the Fascioliasis in Iran has reduced in recent years, But the importance of the disease has not reduced and there is a possibility of an epidemic. Furthermore, in many cities of Iran, there is no study on the disease.
