Meta-Analysis
Accumulating studies have revealed that up- or downregulated miRNA-196 expression correlates with the prognostic value in various malignancies; however, existing single studies lack robust evidence to elucidate the role of miRNA-196 in malignancy. The pooled results showed that the upregulation of miRNA-196 expression was significantly correlated with unfavorable OS [HR 2.14; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.78-2.57; < 0.001)] and worse PFS (HR 2.84; 95% CI, 1.29-6.23, = 0.01) in various malignancies. According to the regulatory mechanisms, studies shown that multiple tumors associated with transcription processes could be modulated by the miRNA-196 family; correspondingly, the miRNA-196 family exerted biological functions that could be regulated by various molecules. The upregulation of miRNA-196a, miRNA-196b and miRNA-196 expression is correlated with significantly unfavorable OS in multiple malignancies; similarly, miRNA-196 overexpression predicts poor PFS in multiple malignancies. Taken together, these findings indicate that miRNA-196a and miRNA-196b may serve as oncogenic molecules and may be potential prognostic biomarkers in multiple malignancies.

Review
BACKGROUND
Epigenetic mechanisms have been suggested to play a key role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD), among which microRNAs (miRNAs) may be of particular significance according to recent studies. We aimed to summarize miRNA studies in BD to identify consistent findings, limitations, and future directions of this emerging field.
METHODS
We performed a comprehensive search on PUBMED and Medline for studies investigating an association between BD and miRNAs. The included studies report miRNA alterations in postmortem brain tissues and in the periphery, cell culture and preclinical findings, genetic associations, and the effects of medications.
RESULTS
Several studies report changes in miRNA expression levels in postmortem brain and in the periphery of patients, although most of the results so far have not been replicated and are not concordant between different populations. Genetic studies also suggest that miRNA genes are located within susceptibility loci of BD, and also a putative role of miRNAs in modulating genes previously shown to confer risk of BD.
LIMITATIONS
We did not perform a systematic review of the literature, and miRNAs represent only one facet of the plethora of epigenetic mechanisms that might be involved in BD's pathophysiology.
CONCLUSIONS
miRNA findings in BD significantly vary between studies, but are consistent to suggest a key role for these molecules in BD's pathophysiology and treatment, particularly miR-34a and miR-137. Accordingly, miRNA might represent important biomarkers of illness to be used in the clinical settings, and potentially also for the development of novel therapeutics for BD in the near future.

Review
Endometriosis, characterized by endometrial-like mucosal tissue outside the uterine cavity, is a reproductive disorder afflicting about 10% of women within the reproductive age. The pathogenesis of endometriosis has been attributed to factors like genetics, environmental particles, and hormones. A comprehensive review of studies from July 2010 to July 2023 across multiple databases was done to aid in a better understanding of the same. The investigation focused on studies delineating the correlation between endocrine disruptors, microRNAs, and endometriosis. To optimize the search scope, keywords and subject headings were used as search terms. Then, two authors rigorously assessed studies using criteria, selecting 27 studies from various databases. Notably, dioxins, organochlorine pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls exhibited a solid connection for endometriosis, while bisphenol A and phthalates yielded conflicting results. The heightened presence of bisphenol A, polychlorinated biphenyls, and phthalates was linked to altered gene expression, including genes like AKR1B10, AKR1C3, and FAM49B. MicroRNAs like miRNA-31, miRNA-144, and miRNA-145 emerged as vital factors in the onset of endometriosis and progression. Furthermore, elevated expression of miR-1304-3p, miR-544, and miR-3684 and reduced expression of miR-3935 and miR-4427 exert substantial influence on signaling pathways like NF-κB, MAPK, and Wnt/β-catenin. Currently, literature shows an independent link between endocrine disruptor exposure and endometriosis and between microRNA dysregulation and endometriosis. However, research lacks the combination of all three factors. The review delves into the effects of endocrine disruptors and microRNAs on the pathogenesis of endometriosis to improve our understanding of the disorder and in finding therapies.

Meta-Analysis Review
This study aimed to critically appraise the evidence of the diagnostic effectiveness of miRNAs for the detection of cervical cancer. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed, searching PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. An umbrella meta-analysis of meta-analyses of individual biomarkers was performed. A Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) assessment of evidence was also performed. A total of 52 miRNAs were included. Umbrella meta-analysis revealed significant heterogeneity in terms of sensitivity, specificity, receiver operating characteristic (ROC), positive predictive value and/or negative predictive value. Umbrella effects were 0.76 (95% CI: 0.73-0.78), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.75-0.81), 0.77 (95% CI: 0.75-0.80), 0.75 (95% CI: 0.71-0.79) and 0.76 (95% CI: 0.74-0.79), respectively. Moderate quality evidence suggested miR199a-5p, miR21-5p and miR-141a had excellent diagnostic performance.

Meta-Analysis
BACKGROUND
Aortic dissection (AD) is a serious and fatal vascular disease. The earlier the condition of AD patients can be assessed precisely, the more scientifically controlled the patient's condition will be. Therefore, timely and accurate diagnosis is significant for AD. Blood biomarker testing as a method of liquid biopsy can improve the diagnostic efficiency of AD. This study conducted a systematic review of the current blood diagnostic biomarkers of AD.
METHODS
The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase electronic databases were systematically searched from inception to January 1, 2023, using the terms "aortic dissection", "serum", "plasma" and "diagnosis". Stata 12.0 software was used to perform Random effects meta-analysis was performed using Stata 12.0 software to determine the effect sizes and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Then, a summary receiver operator characteristic (SROC) curve was drawn, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was calculated.
RESULTS
D-dimer had the best sensitivity and AUC for AD, with values of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.93-0.98) and 0.95 (95% CI: 0.93-0.97), respectively. The sensitivity and AUC values for D-dimer with a cut-off value of 500 ng/mL were 0.97 (95% CI: 0.95-0.99) and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.92-0.96), respectively. In contrast, microRNA had a better specificity value for AD, at 0.79 (95% CI: 0.73-0.83).
CONCLUSIONS
D-dimer and microRNA have good accuracy in the diagnosis of AD, but the specificity of D-dimer is worse, and studies of microRNA are insufficient. The combination of different biomarkers can improve the diagnostic accuracy. Other blood biomarkers are related to the pathological progression of AD and can be selected according to pathological progress.

Meta-Analysis Review
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) exhibit a crucial role in the pathogenesis and progress of neurodegenerative disorders. Recent studies have shown abnormal levels of miRNA expression in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Clinical data also confirmed that miRNAs in these patients are inconsistent across studies. A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of current studies can help recognize the important roles of miRNAs during ALS development. Therefore, we initially aimed to perform a systematic literature review on the muscle or serum miRNAs in patients with ALS and healthy individuals. Subsequently, we quantitatively summarized the clinical data of muscle or serum miRNA of patients with ALS and healthy individuals using a meta-analytical technique. 11 studies comprising 281 patients with ALS and 244 healthy control (HC) controls were identified from PubMed and Web of Science for meta-analysis. A systematic review revealed that miRNA levels are closely associated with the occurrence of ALS disease. The expression levels of the most relevant miRNAs were either increased or decreased. The random-effects meta-analysis indicated that the levels of miR-206, miR-133b, and miR-338-3p were significantly elevated in patients with ALS than in HC subjects. By contrast, there was no significant differences in the miR-133a levels between patients with ALS and HC subjects. Collectively, our outcomes demonstrated that serum miR-206, miR-133b, and miR-338-3p were significantly increased in patients with ALS. We speculated that the increased expression levels of miR-206, miR-133b and miR-338-3p are potential promising biomarkers for ALS.

Meta-Analysis
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify deferentially expressed serum miRNAs in multiple sclerosis patients and to evaluate their diagnostic value in multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Studies were identified on PubMed, Google scholar and Saudi digital library up to 30 September 2019. Articles that examined miRNA expression level in MS patients compared to healthy control group were included in the review and the data were extracted by three independent author. The comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3 software was used for meta-analysis and heterogeneity of studies was identified according to I2 value. Our literatures search identified 9 eligible articles concerning the serum miRNA as a diagnostic biomarker for multiple sclerosis in comparison to healthy control group. 19 serum miRNAs differentially expressed in MS patients were identified (8 downregulated, 11 upregulated and 1 with discordant result). In publications that provided information on specific miRNA diagnostic value, the pooled AUC was 72% (95% CI 0.65-0.78, -value 0.00) for the overall multiple sclerosis patients and primary progressive MS (PPMS) (95% CI 0.66-0.78 -value 0.00). A miRNA panel of four miRNAs showed high sensitivity (73%) and specificity (68%) in distinguishing multiple sclerosis from control groups. When using single miRNA (miR-145), the sensitivity increased to 79% and the specificity to 87%. The available data from the literature and this meta-analysis suggests the potential use of serum miRNA as biomarkers for early diagnosis of MS with high sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing multiple sclerosis subtypes from healthy controls.: MS: Multiple sclerosis; IDD: inflammatory demyelinating diseases; RRMS: relapsing-remitting Multiple sclerosis; PPMS: primary progressive Multiple sclerosis; SPMS: secondary progressive Multiple sclerosis; NMO: Neuromyelitis optica; miRNA: microRNA; ECmiRNA: extracellular microRNA; AUC: Area Under the Curve; ROC: Receiver Operator Characteristic.

Review
The evidence suggests that diet can modulate endogenous microRNA (miRNA) expression. Changes in miRNA expression may affect metabolic processes and consequently be involved in health status and disease development. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the evidence of the role of diet and specific food components in the regulation of miRNA expression and discuss its implications for human health and disease development. The PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines for relevant studies. A total of 32 interventional and 5 observational studies performed in adults and evaluating dietary modulation of miRNA expression were included. Energy- and fat-controlled diets along with plant-based foods show substantial evidence of modulating endogenous miRNA levels. Plasma, serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are the main sources used to measure miRNAs. A total of 108 miRNAs modulated by diet were identified. We confirmed that dietary habits are closely associated with the modulation of endogenous miRNAs. Particularly, energy content and fat intake appeared to be key factors influencing miRNA levels. Furthermore, since miRNAs are involved in the regulation of several biological processes, this modulatory process may affect health status and lead to metabolic disorders.

Review
Mosquitoes are incriminated as vectors for many crippling diseases, including malaria, West Nile fever, Dengue fever, and other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). microRNAs (miRNAs) can interact with multiple target genes to elicit biological functions in the mosquitoes. However, characterization and function of individual miRNAs and their potential targets have not been fully determined to date. We conducted a systematic review of published literature following PRISMA guidelines. We summarize the information about miRNAs in mosquitoes to better understand their metabolism, development, and responses to microorganisms. Depending on the study, we found that miRNAs were dysregulated in a species-, sex-, stage-, and tissue/organ-specific manner. Aberrant miRNA expressions were observed in development, metabolism, host-pathogen interactions, and insecticide resistance. Of note, many miRNAs were down-regulated upon pathogen infection. The experimental studies have expanded the identification of miRNA target from the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of mRNAs of mosquitoes to the 5' UTRs of mRNAs of the virus. In addition, we discuss current trends in mosquito miRNA research and offer suggestions for future studies.

Review
OBJECTIVES
This work attempts to summarize current knowledge on the effects of cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems and tobacco heating products on miRNA-mediated gene expression regulation and on their possible impact on smoking-related respiratory disease development.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Literature search by terms combination: 'smoking', 'cigarette' 'THP', 'tobacco heating product', 'ENDS', 'electronic nicotine delivery system', 'e-cigarette', electronic cigarette' and 'miRNA-mediated gene expression' has been performed from October 2021 to February 2022. In this systematic review all relevant literature, including clinical trials, cellular and animal-based studies were included.
RESULTS
Cigarette smoke (CS) significantly altered transcriptome, including miRNAs expression profile. MiRNA-mediated gene expression is mentioned as one of the mechanisms associated with smoking-related respiratory disease development. Differential expression of miRNAs was reduced in aerosol from e-cigarettes (EC) and tobacco heating products (THP) when compared to CS. However, there was a significant alteration of some miRNAs expression when compared to air-controls in both EC and THP.
DISCUSSION
CS negatively affects transcriptome and miRNA-mediated gene expression regulation because of a huge number of hazardous substances which predispose to smoking-related diseases. Despite the reduced effect of ENDS and THP on miRNAs profile compared to CS, differences in expression of miRNAs when compared to air-control were observed, which may be harmful to never-smokers who may perceive such alternative smoking products as non-hazardous. To clearly indicate the role of ENDS and THP in the alteration of miRNA-mediated gene expression and the development of smoking-related respiratory diseases associated with this mechanism, more long-term studies should be performed in the future.
