BACKGROUND
Among present reports, the T/G allelic variation at the rs2609255 locus of the family sequence similarity gene 13A (FAM13A) was considerable associated with susceptibility to interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). In this study, we summarized relevant studies and applied a meta-analysis to explore whether the polymorphism of rs2609255 site of the FAM13A gene can be utilized to predict susceptibility to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients or rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) or silicosis patients in different populations for the first time.
METHODS
We compared the frequency of G allele on rs2609255 site of FAM13A between the control subjects and IPF or RA-ILD or silicosis patients from different races by using meta-analysis. Nine studies were involved in this meta-analysis, including five IPF studies, two RA-ILD studies, and two silicosis studies, and containing 14 subgroups. We conducted separate meta-analyses for different races.
RESULTS
In all individuals, a substantial link between the G allele of the FAM13A rs2609255 polymorphism and IPF (OR: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.33-1.63, p < 0.00001) was indicated. After dividing by ethnicity, the G allele was illustrated to be considerable correlation with IPF in Asian (OR: 2.63, 95% CI: 1.81-3.81, p < 0.00001) and with RA-ILD individuals (OR: 3.27, 95% CI: 1.26-8.49, p = 0.01). Conversely, there was no correlation with the G allele and IPF in European individuals (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 0.89-1.83, p = 0.13) or silicosis in Chinese individuals (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 0.99-1.46, p = 0.07).
CONCLUSION
This is the first meta-analysis that provides evidence that the rs2609255 of FAM13A might increase susceptibility to RA-ILD, and IPF especially in Asian but not in European individuals, and not be correlated with silicosis in Chinese individuals, which indicated the differences in susceptibility to disease by race were noteworthy.

To investigate the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, on-site dust monitoring and individual protection of the patients with artificial stone-related silicosis. In March 2022, the literature on artificial stone-related silicosis published from January 1965 to February 2022 was searched in China Journal Full-text Database, Wanfang Database, VIP Database, EMbase and PubMed. Chinese and English search terms include "silica dust""silica dust""silicosis""artificial stone""pneumoconiosis", etc. References were included according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, and data were extracted. The epidemiological characteristics, natural course of disease, workplace dust concentration and individual protection level of patients with artificial stone-related silicosis were analyzed by systematic review. A total of 30 literatures were included, including 7 cohort studies, 14 cross-sectional studies, 3 case-control studies and 6 case reports. A total of 1358 patients with artificial stone-related silicosis were diagnosed from 1997 to 2020, with an average age of 41.5 years old and an average dust exposure time of 11.3 years. Among them, 36.2% (282/778) had progressive mass fibrosis or accelerated progressive silicosis at first diagnosis. Chest imaging showed diffuse small nodule shadow, pulmonary fibrosis, and silico-alveolar proteinosis. Pulmonary function showed restricted or mixed ventilation disorder with or without decreased diffusion volume. The disease progressed rapidly, with progressive mass fibrosis, respiratory failure, and even death. Patients engaged in artificial quartz stone processing, with high concentration of silica including ultra-fine particles, most of which were dry operation, lack of on-site ventilation measures and no effective personal protection. The artificial stone processing workers suffer from artificial stone-related silicosis due to dry cutting, lack of on-site dust removal facilities and personal protective measures, and the disease progresses rapidly, leading to poor prognosis.

INTRODUCTION To determine the frequency of TB among patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs).METHODS We performed a comprehensive search in the PubMed/Medline, EMBASE and Scopus databases up to 1 August 2023 of studies reporting on the prevalence of TB among patients with ILDs.RESULTS Twelve studies comprising 3,817 patients with ILD were found: the pooled prevalence of TB among ILD patients was 11.0% (95% CI 5.4-21.0). In the subgroup analysis, the TB rate among patients with silicosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) was respectively 35.6% (95% CI 32.6-38.8) and 4.4% (95% CI 3.6-5.3) ( = 0.00). The frequency of TB among ILD patients was higher in high TB burden countries than in low/intermediate-burden countries: 26.3%, 95% CI 17.7-37.3 vs. 4.9%, 95% CI 3.3-7.2; = 0.00. .CONCLUSIONS This study shows the frequency of TB among ILD patients. The meta-analysis reveals a significantly increased prevalence of TB among ILD patients with silicosis compared to IPF, and among individuals in high TB burden countries than in those with low/intermediate burden. BACKGROUND
Silicosis is a lung disease of fibrotic nature resulting from the inhalation and deposition of dust containing crystalline silica. Subjects exposed to the same environmental factors may show distinct radiological manifestations, and since silicosis is known as a multifactorial disease, it is plausible that individual genetic susceptibility may play a role in the pathology. This review of the literature aims to provide an assessment of the present data on the genetic association studies in silicosis and describe the genes that potentially might influence silicosis susceptibility in silica-exposed individuals.
METHODS
We accessed the database of PubMed for articles published in English about interindividual genetic susceptibility to silicosis using terms related to the subject matter.
RESULTS
Following the evaluation process, 28 studies were included in this systematic review, including 23 original studies and 5 meta-analyses.
CONCLUSIONS
Regardless of the advances in the knowledge of the importance of gene variations in silicosis, more studies need to be performed, in particular, special polygenic and genome-wide investigations.

BACKGROUND
Exposure to crystalline silica has long been identified to be associated with lung diseases. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the risk of silicosis and lung cancer associated with occupational exposure to crystalline silica in Iran.
STUDY DESIGN
It is a systematic review study.
METHODS
Different databases were searched, and the Cochrane method was used for the systematic review. Thereafter, cumulative exposure to crystalline silica (mg/m3-y) was calculated in every industry. The relative risk of death from silicosis was performed using Mannetje's method. Based on the geometric mean of exposure, the lung cancer risk of exposure to crystalline silica was also calculated.
RESULTS
As evidenced by the results, worker's exposure to silica ranged from a geometric mean of 0.0212- 0.2689 mg/m3 (Recommended standard by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) was 0.025 mg/m3), which is generally higher than the occupational exposure limit recommended by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), ACGIH, and occupational exposure limits. The relative risk of silicosis was in the range of 1 to 14 per 1000 people, and the risk of lung cancer in workers ranged from 13-137 per 1000 people.
CONCLUSION
Since workers are at considerable risk of cancer due to exposure to silica in Iran, exposure control programs need to be implemented in workplaces to decrease the concentration of silica.

BACKGROUND
Cell therapy holds the most promising for acute and chronic deleterious respiratory diseases. However, the safety and tolerance for lung disorders are controversy.
METHODS
We undertook a systematic review and meta-analyses of all 23 clinical studies of cell therapy. The outcomes were odds ratio (OR), risk difference (RD), Peto OR, relative risk, and mean difference of serious adverse events.
RESULTS
342 systemic infusions and 57 bronchial instillations (204 recipients) of cells were analyzed for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), bronchopulmonary dysplasia, pulmonary arterial hypertension, silicosis, sarcoidosis, extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The frequency of death in adults from any causes was 71 and 177 per 1,000 for cell therapy and controls, respectively, with an OR of 0.31 (95% CI: 0.03, 3.76) and RD of -0.22 (95% CI: -0.53, 0.09). No significant difference was found for ARDS and COPD. The frequency of deaths and non-fatal serious adverse events of 17 open studies were similar to those of randomized controlled trials. Moreover, serious adverse events of allogenic cells were greater than autologous preparations, as shown by frequency, OR and RD.
CONCLUSIONS
We conclude that either infusion or instillation of mesenchymal stem stromal or progenitor cells are well tolerated without serious adverse events causally related to cell treatment. Cell therapy has not been associated with significant changes in spirometry, immune function, cardiovascular activity, and the quality of life.

OBJECTIVES
Some evidence suggests that exposure to free crystalline silica may contribute to the risk of developing SLE. A systematic search was carried out for all published epidemiological studies concerning this association. A meta-analysis was conducted on relevant studies.
METHODS
We searched PubMed and EMBASE databases for original articles published from 1960 to November 2019 in any language. In addition, we also searched the reference lists of included studies manually for additional relevant articles. Finally, seven studies were included in the systematic review and six studies in the meta-analysis (four case-control and two cohort studies). The odds ratio and 95% CI were calculated using a random effect meta-analysis.
RESULTS
The meta-analysis of the studies, applying a random effect model, yielded an overall odds ratio of 3.49 (95% CI, 1.24, 9.83), with I2 = 92.36% (pronounced heterogeneity). We also stratified the meta-analysis by study design; case-control studies: odds ratio 1.85 (95% CI, 0.96, 3.59) with I2 = 75.92%; and cohort studies (cases with silicosis): odds ratio 9.71 (95% CI, 1.13, 83.58) with I2 = 72.65%.
CONCLUSIONS
The obtained results support the hypothesis of a possible association between occupational exposure to free crystalline silica and SLE, in particular at higher exposure levels, known to induce silicosis. The studies that have investigated this association are still scarce and the heterogeneity between the studies remains high. New studies are deemed necessary to confirm the association.

BACKGROUND
While occupational exposure to respirable silica is known to lead to lung disease, most notably silicosis, its association with chronic kidney disease is unclear.
OBJECTIVES
This review explores the association between occupational exposure to respirable silica and chronic non-malignant renal disease such as glomerulonephritis. The evidence has been collected and compiled. Possible sources of bias are thoroughly discussed.
METHODS
Cohort studies with silica exposure and case-control studies of renal disease were searched in PubMed until January 2015. Two authors independently abstracted data; any disagreement was resolved by consulting a third reviewer. A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the association to silica exposure.
RESULTS
A total of 23 cohort and four case-control studies were included in the analysis. The meta-analysis of cohort studies yielded elevated overall SMRs for renal disease. Some studies, however, included dose-response analyses, most of which did not show a positive trend. The approaches and results of the case-control studies were very heterogeneous.
CONCLUSIONS
While the studies of cohorts exposed to silica found elevated SMRs for renal disease, no clear evidence of a dose-response relationship emerged. The elevated risk may be attributed to diagnostic and methodological issues. In order to permit a reliable estimation of a possible causal link, exposed cohorts should be monitored for renal disease, as the information from mortality studies is hardly reliable in this field.

This systematic review examines the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in managing lung disorders through a comprehensive analysis of articles spanning 2014 to 2023. Evaluating AI's multifaceted roles in radiological imaging, disease burden prediction, detection, diagnosis, and molecular mechanisms, this review presents a critical synthesis of key insights from select articles. OBJECTIVES
This study examined the association between silicosis and lung cancer in a systematic review (and meta-analysis) of the epidemiologic literature, with special reference to the methodological quality of observational studies.
METHODS
We searched Medline, Toxline, BIOSIS and Embase (1966-May 2004) for original articles published in any language and systematically reviewed the bibliographies of the retrieved articles. Observational studies (cohort and case-control studies) were selected if they reported a measure of association [standardized mortality ratio (SMR), relative risk or odds ratio] relating lung cancer to silicosis.
RESULTS
Thirty-one studies (27 cohort studies, 4 case-control studies) met the inclusion criteria of the meta-analysis. Without any adjustment for smoking, the meta-analysis of the cohort studies indicated that the common SMR was 2.45 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.63-3.66; homogeneity P<0.0001]. When the results of the cohorts for which mortality data were adjusted for smoking were pooled, the common SMR was 1.60 (95% CI 1.33-1.93; homogeneity P=0.52). In a "dose-response" analysis, the profusion of small and large opacities found in chest X-rays correlated with the risk of death from lung cancer. Overall, the case-control studies were more conservative in their conclusions.
CONCLUSIONS
Because of biases inherent to observational studies, it is likely that the risk of lung cancer among silicosis patients is overestimated in the current literature. There is nevertheless evidence, from data restricted to never-smokers and from a "dose-response" analysis, that silicosis and lung cancer are associated.
