Statins may exert protective effects against oxidative stress by upregulating specific antioxidant mechanisms. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of statins on three key antioxidant enzymes: glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase. The electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception to July 2021. The risk of bias was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist and certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADE framework. In 15 studies, reporting 17 treatment arms in 773 patients (mean age 53 years, 54% males), statins significantly increased the concentrations of both GPx (standardized mean difference, SMD = 0.80, 95% confidence interval, CI 0.13 to 1.46, = 0.018; high certainty of evidence) and SOD (SMD = 1.54, 95% CI 0.71 to 2.36, < 0.001; high certainty of evidence), but not catalase (SMD = -0.16, 95% CI -0.51 to 0.20, = 0.394; very low certainty of evidence). The pooled SMD values were not altered in sensitivity analysis. There was no publication bias. In conclusion, statin treatment significantly increases the circulating concentrations of GPx and SOD, suggesting an antioxidant effect of these agents (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021271589).

Effect of Physical Exercise Under Different Intensity and Antioxidative Supplementation for Plasma Superoxide Dismutase in Healthy Adults: Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis.
BACKGROUND
The dynamic balance between oxidation and anti-oxidation in the body's internal environment has a significant meaning for human health. Physical exercise and antioxidative supplementation could affect the balance of oxidation and anti-oxidation systems. The evidence on the effects of physical exercise and antioxidative supplementation is mixed.
AIMS
To identify the effects of physical exercise, antioxidative supplementation, and their combination on the dynamic balance between oxidation and anti-oxidation in different subgroups of healthy adults.
METHODS
All studies which reported randomized controlled trials with healthy participants were screened and included from the databases of PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Ovid. All participants were reclassified according to their different daily life activities. All physical exercise interventions were reclassified according to the intensity. The effect size would be calculated in percent or factor units from the mean level change with its associated random-effect variance.
RESULT
There were 27 studies included in this review. The agreement between authors by using The Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Assessment Tool reached a kappa-value of 0.72. Maintaining a regular physical exercise routine in an appropriate intensity would be beneficial to the body's anti-oxidative potential. Anti-oxidative supplementation could have some positive but limited effects on the body's anti-oxidative status and complex interaction with physical exercise.
CONCLUSION
Keeping a regular physical exercise routine and gradually increasing its intensity according to the individual's daily life activity might be a better choice to maintain and enhancing the body's antioxidation potential, only using anti-oxidative supplementation is not recommended. More research is needed to explore the best combination protocol.

BACKGROUND
There is increasing evidence that diabetic retinopathy is caused by the action of free radicals. Radical scavengers like vitamin C and superoxide dismutase (SOD) may influence the outcome and progression of diabetic retinopathy, but no systematic review of the literature has been published to examine this hypothesis.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of the current research was to review the literature in a standard systematic way in order to assess the effects of vitamin C and superoxide dismutase on diabetic retinopathy in methodologically robust trials.
SEARCH STRATEGY
We tried to obtain studies from computerised searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science and The Cochrane Library.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effect of vitamin C, superoxide dismutase or both in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy were considered.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Two authors independently read all abstracts, titles or both and wanted to assess risk of bias and to perform data extraction. Discrepancies were planned to be resolved by consensus or by the judgement of a third author.
MAIN RESULTS
A total of 241 publications were identified by the electronic searches. Of these, 28 were identified as potentially containing information about the treatment of patients with diabetic retinopathy using vitamin C or SOD and were read in full. No trial evaluated the treatment of diabetic retinopathy with vitamin C or SOD.
AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS
No research to date has adequately examined the treatment of diabetic retinopathy with vitamin C or SOD in such a way as to indicate whether this form of intervention has a significant impact on the progress of this clinical condition. The potential role of these substances in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy remains open to debate, and it is suggested that future research focusing on patient-oriented outcomes should address this important issue.

BACKGROUND This systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis aimed to review the evaluation and monitoring of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and its clinical significance in gastric cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS Systematic review involved searching the PubMed, Embase, Ovid, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. Search terms included 'superoxide dismutase,' and 'gastric cancer.' Studies that included measurements of SOD activity in peripheral blood samples in patients with SOD activity compared with healthy controls. The study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. RESULTS Ten controlled clinical studies were identified that included six studies that measured SOD in serum, three in erythrocytes, and one study that measured SOD on whole blood. Meta-analysis, using the standardized mean difference (SMD) and the 95% confidence interval (CI), showed that patients with gastric cancer had significantly decreased SOD activity when compared with the healthy controls (SMD, -0.840; 95% CI, -1.463 to -0.218; p=0.008). Subgroup analysis was conducted on SOD distribution in the blood (erythrocyte: SMD, -1.773; 95% CI, -2.504 to -1.042; p=0.000) (serum SMD, -0.322; 95% CI, -1.006-0.361; p=0.355) (whole blood: SMD, -1.251; 95% CI, -1.731 to -0.771; p=0.000) and for male subjects (SMD, -2.090; 95% CI, -2.725 to -1.456; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Meta-analysis showed that SOD measurements from blood samples, especially in erythrocytes, had potential as a diagnostic and monitoring parameter in patients with gastric cancer.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential element acting as a co-factor of superoxide dismutase, and it is potentially beneficial for cardiometabolic health by reducing oxidative stress. Although some studies have examined the relationship between Mn and metabolic syndrome (MetS), no systematic review and meta-analysis has been presented to summarize the evidence. Therefore, the present review examined the association between dietary and environmental Mn exposure, and MetS risk. A total of nine cross-sectional studies and three case-control studies were included, which assessed Mn from diet, serum, urine, and whole blood. The association of the highest Mn level from diet (three studies, odds ratio (OR): 0.83, 95% confidence interval (C.I.) = 0.57, 1.21), serum (two studies, OR: 0.87, 95% C.I. = 0.66, 1.14), urine (two studies, OR: 0.84, 95% C.I. = 0.59, 1.19), and whole blood (two studies, OR: 0.92, 95% C.I. = 0.53, 1.60) were insignificant, but some included studies have suggested a non-linear relationship of urinary and blood Mn with MetS, and higher dietary Mn may associate with a lower MetS risk in some of the included studies. While more evidence from prospective cohorts is needed, future studies should use novel statistical approaches to evaluate relative contribution of Mn on MetS risk along with other inter-related exposures.

This systematic review is aimed to evaluate the effects of balneotherapy with thermal mineral water for managing the symptoms and signs of osteoarthritis located at any anatomical site. The systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA Statement. The following databases were consulted: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, DOAJ and PEDro. We included clinical trials evaluating the effects of balneotherapy as a treatment for patients with osteoarthritis, published in English and Italian language, led on human subjects. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO. Overall, 17 studies have been included in the review. All of these studies were performed on adults or elderly patients suffering from osteoarthritis localized to knees, hips, hands or lumbar spine. The treatment assessed was always the balneotherapy with thermal mineral water. The outcomes evaluated were pain, palpation/pressure sensibility, articular tenderness, functional ability, quality of life, mobility, deambulation, ability to climb stairs, medical objective and patients' subjective evaluation, superoxide dismutase enzyme activity, serum levels of interleukin-2 receptors. The results of all the included studies agree and demonstrated an improvement of all the symptoms and signs investigated. In particular, pain and quality of life were the main symptoms evaluated and both improved after the treatment with thermal water in all the studies included in the review. These effects can be attributed to physical and chemical-physical properties of thermal mineral water used. However, the quality of many studies resulted not so high due and, consequently, it is necessary to perform new clinical trial in this field using more correct methods for conducting the study and for processing statistical data.

BACKGROUND
Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is a multifactorial, complex pathophysiological process in clinical settings. In recent years, intestinal IRI has received increasing attention due to increased morbidity and mortality. To date, there are no effective treatments. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a highly selective α-adrenergic receptor agonist, has been demonstrated to be effective against intestinal IRI. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the efficacy and potential mechanisms of DEX as a treatment for intestinal IRI in animal models.
METHODS
Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus) were searched until March 15, 2023. Using the SYRCLE risk bias tool, we assessed methodological quality. Statistical analysis was conducted using STATA 12 and R 4.2.2. We analyzed the related outcomes (mucosa damage-related indicators; inflammation-relevant markers, oxidative stress markers) relied on the fixed or random-effects models.
RESULTS
There were 15 articles including 18 studies included, and 309 animals were involved in the studies. Compared to the model groups, DEX improved intestinal IRI. DEX decreased Chiu's score and serum diamine oxidase (DAO) level. DEX reduced the level of inflammation-relevant markers (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α). DEX also improved oxidative stress (decreased malondialdehyde (MDA), increased superoxide dismutase (SOD)).
CONCLUSIONS
DEX's effectiveness in ameliorating intestinal IRI has been demonstrated in animal models. Antioxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-apoptotic, anti-pyroptosis, anti-ferroptosis, enhancing mitophagy, reshaping the gut microbiota, and gut barrier protection are possible mechanisms. However, in light of the heterogeneity and methodological quality of these studies, further well-designed preclinical studies are warranted before clinical implication.

: To review and present the most distinct concepts on the association of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with male reproduction. : The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to search PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane electronic databases for studies investigating the role of oxidative stress (OS) on sperm function. : The literature search yielded 1857 studies, of which 1791 articles were excluded because of irrelevance of data, non-English language, non-human nature or because they were case reports or commentaries. All included studies were reviews (46), meta-analyses (one), original research studies (18) and guideline articles (one). The studies were published between 1984 and 2018. Under normal physiological conditions, ROS are vital for sperm maturation, hyperactivation, capacitation, acrosome reaction, as well as fertilisation. However, a number of endogenous and exogenous causes may induce supra-physiological levels of ROS resulting in lipid peroxidation, sperm DNA fragmentation and apoptosis, and consequently infertility. Several laboratory testing methods can be used in infertile men to diagnose OS. Treatment usually involves antioxidant supplementation and, when possible, elimination of the causative factor. : OS is an important cause of male factor infertility. OBJECTIVE
The present article aims to comprehensively review the existing literature on superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, an antioxidant enzyme, in oral cancer.
METHOD
An extensive literature search was conducted across various databases, including PubMed, Wiley Online Library, Science Direct, and Cross Reference, spanning 1998-2023. At the outset, 1,177 articles were initially identified, and 907 studies were excluded due to irrelevance or duplication of the research question. Subsequently, 270 articles underwent screening evaluation, resulting in the selection of 85 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. Following this, 68 articles underwent a full-text comprehensive assessment, and ultimately, 39 were chosen for data extraction. The risk of bias in the designated articles was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Finally, 13 studies were meticulously selected, offering consistent data for the ensuing meta-analysis. Meta-analysis was executed using comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) version 3 software (Bio Stat Inc., Englewood, NJ, USA). The meta-analysis findings revealed a statistically significant decrease in SOD levels in both erythrocyte samples ( < 0.001) and tissue samples ( < 0.05) among individuals with oral cancer (OSCC) compared to the normal control group. Conversely, the analysis of three studies on salivary samples demonstrated a significant increase ( < 0.05) in SOD levels in the oral cancer group compared to the healthy controls.
CONCLUSION
This systematic review underscores a statistically significant decline in SOD levels observed across diverse bio-samples in individuals with oral cancer, indicating an excess of oxidative stress (OS). Additional research is needed to delve into the relationship between SOD levels and clinic-pathological prognostic markers within the oral cancer cohort. Such investigations have the potential to significantly contribute to the development of prognostic tools grounded in OS, thereby guiding strategies for treatment planning.

OBJECTIVE
Oxidative stress (OS) has been previously linked to the aging process, as have some diseases and geriatric syndromes as frailty and sarcopenia. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review on oxidative stress activity and extreme longevity in humans.
METHODS
We conducted a systematic literature review following the PRISMA guidelines. Observational studies assessing OS-biomarkers and/or antioxidants in long-lived individuals (97 years old or over) comparing them to those of one or more age groups, (at least one of which from comprising elderly subjects) were considered for inclusion. A narrative synthesis was planned. Quality of selected studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale (NOS).
RESULTS
After screening and eligibility phases, 12 articles were finally selected, with 646 long-lived participants and 1052 controls, 447 adults (20-60 years old) and 605 elderly individuals (over 60 years old). The average score on NOS scale of studies was 4,8 out of 9. Centenarians showed significantly less (p<0,05) oxidative damage to lipids in different samples, lower levels of oxidized proteins in plasma and lower superoxide anion levels in neutrophils than elderly groups. Centenarian presented significantly lower superoxide dismutase and higher glutathione reductase activities, higher levels of vitamins A and E, lower of coenzyme Q10, and lower susceptibility to lipid peroxidation than elderly controls.
CONCLUSION
Based on studies of medium-low quality, available evidence suggests that long-lived individuals display less oxidative damage, particularly lower plasma lipid peroxidation biomarkers, than controls. More studies with better experimental designs are needed.
