Review
Venous air embolism (VAE) can be a lethal complication of surgical procedures, during which (1) venous pressure at the site of surgery is subatmospheric or (2) gas is forced under pressure into a body cavity. Though classically associated with neurosurgery, VAE is also a potential complication of laparoscopic, pelvic, and orthopedic procedures. It is, therefore, essential for the practicing anesthesiologist to recognize and treat venous air entrainment. An in-depth review of the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, detection, prevention, and treatment of VAE is presented.

Review
Central venous catheterization is an established procedure in medical, surgical and anaesthetic practice. However, the procedure is not without hazard. One complication that may be life-threatening is air embolism. This article considers the causes of air embolism related to central venous catheterization, its treatment and methods of prevention.

Review
This case report describes the initial care and transport considerations of a pediatric patient who suffered from cerebral gas embolism sustained after inhalation of helium from a pressurized tank. The patient demonstrated neurologic symptoms necessitating hyperbaric oxygen therapy and required fixed wing air transport across a mountain range from a rural community hospital to a tertiary center for the treatment. We review the pathophysiology of cerebral gas embolism and strategies for transporting patients with cerebral gas embolism and other trapped gas.
