Comparative Study Review
Use of hemisection in an attempt to preserve multirooted teeth that have furcation involvement has increased in recent years. However, there are few long-term studies of the success of this treatment. Furthermore, it is difficult to compare results of different studies because of differences in the length of follow-up and the criteria for failure. Results of various studies were reduced to a common denominator to allow comparison. The compiled results of studies on hemisection revealed an average reported failure rate of 13.1%. This rate was compared with results of studies on implants; the failure rates of the two treatment alternatives are not substantially different. Thus, because hemisection is a relatively simple, inexpensive treatment with a good chance of success (given appropriate case selection), it should always be considered as an option before molar extraction.

This article describes the development of a surgical technique employing a carbon dioxide laser for endodontic periapical procedures. The advantages of laser application for sterilization and removal of the infected root apex, as well as enhanced hemostasis, are cited. A case in which the "laser apicoectomy" technique was performed successfully for treatment of secondary apical abscess is presented.

Although necrobacillosis remains a common condition of captive macropods, there have been limited reports of successful treatment modalities by which it can be treated. Comprehensive endodontic therapy with apicoectomy has been used reliably in human and domestic animal dentistry. This report describes a case of periapical osteomyelitis involving a mandibular incisor in a Parma wallaby (Macropus parma) that was successfully treated using these techniques in conjunction with low-level laser therapy at 810 nm, which was used for decontamination of the pulp cavity, anti-inflammatory, and biostimulatory effects.
