Review
Despite the availability and wide use of modern imaging techniques, the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum is difficult. The signs and symptoms vary from none to those of an acute abdomen or gastrointestinal bleeding. Findings on physical examination may be inconsistent because of the variable location of the diverticulum, and bleeding may occur with no appreciable physical findings. Finally, small diverticula are often concealed by overlying small-bowel loops on routine small-bowel barium studies. The purposes of this article are to review the use of available techniques for the imaging diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum, to discuss the relative advantages and indications for the various procedures, and to emphasize the role each plays in specific clinical circumstances. The embryology, anatomy, and clinical presentation of Meckel's diverticulum are also briefly discussed.

BACKGROUND
Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct. Although the majority of MD are asymptomatic, it can present with severe hematochezia. Hematochezia is generally considered to result from a peptic ulcer caused by ectopic gastric mucosa in MD. However, this hypothesis has not been proved.
METHODS
10 cases of surgically resected MD initially presenting with severe hematochezia were histologically examined.
RESULTS
Ectopic gastric mucosa was present in 9 cases, two of which also contained ectopic pancreas. No ectopic tissue was found in one case, which shows that bleeding can occur in MD without ectopic gastric mucosa. In addition, a rupture of aberrant submucosal arterioles through the overlying mucosa, a vascular abnormality called Dieulafoy's lesion, was detected in all the 10 cases.
CONCLUSION
This study suggests that the actual cause of massive bleeding in MD is not a peptic ulcer, but Dieulafoy's lesion.

Review
The Meckel's diverticulum is the commonest congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, often presenting with complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, intussusception, bowel obstruction and diverticulitis, which are often misdiagnosed. Imaging plays an important role in the early diagnosis and characterization of these conditions and is very helpful in decision making. The Meckel's diverticulum and its complications have myriad presentations and appearances on various imaging modalities. Thus, sound knowledge of the anatomy, embryology, clinical presentation, imaging characteristics and complications is crucial to the practice of abdominal imaging. We present a review of the literature and current radiological practices in the diagnosis and management of the Meckel's diverticulum and its various complications with special emphasis on the imaging of various complications, mimickers and pathological correlation.

Review
In the original revue the problematic of Meckel's diverticulum and its complications is presented. Questions of the disease story, anatomy and embryology are described. The complications-analysis of Meckel's diverticulum is realized and the possibilities of diagnostic procedures and therapeutic modalities at the symptomatic and asymptomatic diverticulum are discussed.
