Stereognosis is the ability to recognise and discriminate forms. Oral stereognostic ability has been studied in different reports. The experimental design of the test is of primary importance as both the method used and the material applied may influence the results dramatically. The form, size and surface characteristics of the test piece, the presentation order, subject-related factors and the method of scoring all have their effect on the results. With regard to subject-related factors, ageing has a negative influence on stereognostic ability; gender is considered of no importance. Another influencing factor is dental status. A healthy natural dentition offers a very good oral stereognostic ability. Edentulous subjects usually show a decreased oral stereognostic ability, depending on the rehabilitation form. A number of questions have been addressed, especially with regard to the perception itself. Receptors mainly involved in oral stereognostic ability are located in various oral structures and form perception results from an association of more than one group of receptors. The following review tries to deal with these questions and attempts to provide clear guidelines for further research on oral stereognosis.

The gross and microscopic anatomy of the oral cavity and its contents are discussed from the perspective of their function. Histologically, the oral mucosa is classified into three categories, lining, masticatory, and specialized. The epithelium of the lining mucosa is nonkeratinized stratified squamous, whereas that of the masticatory mucosa is ortho- or parakeratinized, to protect it from the shearing forces of mastication. Specialized mucosa possesses taste buds, small epithelially derived structures responsible for the perception of taste sensation. The subepithelial connective tissue of the lining and masticatory mucosae interdigitate with their epithelia, and the degree of interdigitations is directly correlated with the strength of the shearing forces acting on the mucosa. The oral mucosa also participates in the immunological defense of the oral cavity due to the presence of Langerhans cells, antigen presenting cells in the epithelium.

Understanding oral cavity and oropharyngeal anatomy is important to identify various pathologies that may afflict them. This article reviews normal magnetic resonance imaging anatomy of these vital spaces and structures, with special attention to the complex musculature, mucosal surfaces, relevant osseous structures, salivary glands, and nerves. Anatomic awareness of these spaces and critical potential pathways for perineural tumoral spread are important to recognize to improve diagnostic evaluation and treatment.

The oral cavity of healthy individuals contains hundreds of different bacterial, viral, and fungal species. Many of these can associate to form biofilms, which are resistant to mechanical stress or antibiotic treatment. Most are also commensal species, but they can become pathogenic in responses to changes in the environment or other triggers in the oral cavity, including the quality of an individual's personal hygiene. The complexity of the oral microbiome is being characterized through the newly developed tools of metagenomics. How the microbiome of the oral cavity contributes to health and disease is attracting the interest of a growing number of cell biologists, microbiologists, and immunologists.

Laser capture microdissection (LCM) is a high-end research and diagnostic technology that helps in obtaining pure cell populations for the purpose of cell- or lesion-specific genomic and proteomic analysis. Literature search on the application of LCM in oral tissues was made through PubMed. There is ample evidence to substantiate the utility of LCM in understanding the underlying molecular mechanism involving an array of oral physiological and pathological processes, including odontogenesis, taste perception, eruptive tooth movement, oral microbes, and cancers of the mouth and jaw tumors. This review is aimed at exploring the potential application of LCM in oral tissues as a high-throughput tool for integrated oral sciences. The indispensable application of LCM in the construction of lesion-specific genomic libraries with emphasis on some of the novel molecular markers thus discovered is also highlighted.

Newborn infants present some oral characteristics that are inherent to their stage of development and adequate to their physiological needs. There may also be physiological variations, however, which frequently raise doubts among parents. Many dental professionals are not aware of these aspects of the oral cavity of infants. The purpose of this paper was to present the normal aspects and common variations observed in the oral cavity of newborns to allow proper dental care and counseling to parents.
