Review
Hip dysplasia is a common developmental disorder of the dog, consisting of varying degrees of hip laxity, progressive remodeling of the structures of the hip, and subsequent development of osteoarthritis. It is a juvenile-onset condition, with clinical signs often first evident at 4 to 12 months of age. A tentative diagnosis of hip dysplasia can be made based on signalment, history, and physical examination findings. The Ortolani test is a valuable tool for identifying juvenile dogs affected with this condition. Further diagnostics can then be prioritized, contributing to prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

INTRODUCTION
Physical examination and laboratory evaluation of men with erectile dysfunction (ED) are opportunities to identify potentially life-threatening etiologies and comorbid conditions.
AIM
To review genital anatomy, identify any physical abnormalities, assess for comorbid conditions, and reveal significant risk factors for ED.
METHODS
Expert opinion was based on evidence-based medical literature and consensus discussions between members of this International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) standards committee.
RESULTS
For men with ED, a general examination including blood pressure and pulse measurements and a focused genital exam are advised. Fasting blood sugar, serum total testosterone, prolactin levels, and a lipid profile may reveal significant comorbid conditions.
CONCLUSIONS
Though physical examination and laboratory evaluation of most men with ED may not reveal the exact diagnosis, these opportunities to identify critical comorbid conditions should not be missed.

Review
Although almost every doctor daily carries out physical examination of the heart, there is little reliable research into the value of the conclusions. Inspection and palpation of the apex beat and percussion of the left heart border are important in diagnosing enlargement of the heart. If the dullness falls within the mid-clavicular line, cardiac enlargement is almost certainly excluded. The presence of an abnormal heart murmur indicates a high probability of a haemodynamically significant ventricular septal defect or valve deficiency. The absence of a murmur definitely does not exclude a serious valve deficiency. In case of abnormal heart sounds, such as irregular rhythms, splitting of heart sounds or extra sounds, further investigations are always necessary to determine the clinical importance.

Review
Physical assessment is a new responsibility for many nurses in the UK who are expanding their parameters of advanced clinical practice. A physical assessment framework can be used by both community and acute care nurses as a guide to the process of conducting a physical assessment. The framework presented here consists of the following sequence of steps: identifying the purpose of the assessment; taking a health history; choosing a comprehensive or focused approach; and examining the patient using the sequence of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation. The next step, interpretation of the clinical findings, which results in either the recognition of abnormality or identification of a differential diagnosis, then becomes the basis for clinical decision making. This paper describes a comprehensive, head-to-toe assessment as one example of the application of this physical assessment framework in clinical practice.

Review
The initial evaluation and examination of both the pediatric and adolescent patients provides the opportunity for the clinician to establish a relationship that will ensure the successful outcome of the visit. In the younger age group, cooperation of the child before performing an examination should be the focus at the first encounter. This cooperation will enable proper positioning and a systematic approach to examination and documentation of findings. Although the adolescent patients may be older and better able to understand the specifics of the examination, these patients present additional challenges for the examining practitioner.

Review
Physical examination of the pulmonary system includes inspection, auscultation, percussion, and palpation. By integrating these findings, it is often possible to diagnose and differentiate pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, pulmonary fibrosis, and tracheal collapse. The veterinarian can use the physical examination optimally by initially performing examinations with those who are experienced with the methods and with an understanding of the relatively simple laws of physiology and physics governing transmission of sounds from the patient's lung.
