Retina (Philadelphia, Pa.) Aug 2023To introduce a surgical technique, "pound-shape silicone oil retention suture in aphakic eye with intact iris."
PURPOSE
To introduce a surgical technique, "pound-shape silicone oil retention suture in aphakic eye with intact iris."
METHODS
A retrospective analysis of medical records was performed. Each patient had an aphakic eye with intact iris and received the pound-shape silicone oil retention suture during vitrectomy combined with silicone oil injection.
RESULTS
In the four patients who received the pound-shape silicone oil retention suture, the silicone oil was confined behind the suture for 3 months to 7 months without prolapse into the anterior chamber. Increased intraocular pressure was not observed in any patient, although peripheral iridectomy was not performed.
CONCLUSION
Pound-shape silicone oil retention suture is a simple and effective surgical technique to prevent silicone oil prolapse into the anterior chamber.

Exercise is thought to be an effective means to quick weight loss. However, few people have realistic exercise-induced weight loss expectations. Fewer understand how weight is "lost" and where the lost mass goes. Understanding that fat is "burned" with inhaled oxygen and most of the mass lost must be exhaled as carbon dioxide might help individuals create realistic weight loss expectations. The purpose of this laboratory activity is to ) provide students with a basic understanding of the role of oxygen in fuel metabolism during physical activity and its relationship to energy expenditure and mechanical work, and ) engage students with collection of their own data to determine a realistic timeframe for exercise-induced weight loss. In the prelaboratory, questions such as, "When you lose weight, where does it go?" are asked. A guided discussion helps students understand the basic biochemistry required for weight loss. For the activity, students complete walking or running exercise, recording the time and distance. The relationship of exercise to physics' concepts of mechanical work and energy utilization are discussed with the concept of "calorie burn" and its relationship to oxygen consumption. Students estimate oxygen consumed and calories burned during exercise using established metabolic equations. Finally, the amount of energy (i.e., calories) equivalent to 1 pound of fat is discussed. Students calculate how long he/she would have to exercise to burn 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of fat. A person of average size and fitness, needs 60+ h of exercise to burn 10 pounds of fat. Supplementary activities including a dramatic gummy bear oxidation and the use of a metabolic cart reinforces these concepts and validates the laboratory estimates.

Two vegetal oils have been selected for the formulation of pound cakes, rapeseed oil (RO) and palm oil (PO). The freshness of these products has been monitored during 58 days of storage. The RO pound cakes of 58 days as well as PO pound cakes presented higher values (p < .05) of hardness (N), Young's modulus (N.cm ) and compressive stress (N.cm ) than those aged of 5 days. For both vitamin A and tryptophan spectra, the maximum of fluorescence intensity varied according to the aging period. For both RO and PO recipes, lipid oxidation indicators (peroxide value, para-anisidine value, and total oxidation value [TOTOX]) were interestingly correlated to Young's modulus (R = 0.99) as well as compressive stress (R = 0.99), using polynomial model. The application of partial least squares regression to the vitamin A spectra provided excellent predictive results for both compressive stress (R = 0.99) and TOTOX (R = 0.99). Good results were observed for tryptophan spectra for the prediction of TOTOX (R = 0.77). Thus, the use of front face fluorescence spectroscopy may provide rapid and accurate results for the monitoring of pound cakes freshness throughout storage.

Ovarian masses larger than 100 pounds are rarely encountered in developed countries given advancements in early diagnosis and treatment. Their successful resections pose unique surgical and anesthetic challenges. An otherwise healthy 38-year-old para 1 woman developed a 50 × 60 cm pelvic mass. An exploratory laparotomy, left salpingo-oophorectomy and anterior abdominal wall reconstruction were performed. A total of 60 L of cystic fluid were drained. Close monitoring of hemodynamics and massive volume resuscitation required intensive care. Inpatient physical rehabilitation reinstated independent mobility. Final pathology revealed benign ovarian mucinous cystadenoma. A multidisciplinary approach in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative stages of management optimizes patient outcomes.

During the last decade, the use of online search traffic data is becoming popular in examining, analyzing, and predicting human behavior, with Google Trends being a popular tool in monitoring and analyzing the users' online search patterns in several research areas, like health, medicine, politics, economics, and finance. Towards the direction of exploring the Sterling Pound's predictability, we employ Google Trends data from the last 5 years (March 1st, 2015 to February 29th, 2020) and perform predictability analysis on the Pound's exchange rates to Euro and Dollar. The period selected includes the 2016 UK referendum as well as the actual Brexit day (January 31st, 2020), with the analysis aiming at analyzing the Pound's relationships with Google query data on Pound-related keywords and topics. A quantile dependence method is employed, i.e., cross-quantilograms, to test for directional predictability from Google Trends data to the Pound's exchange rates for lags from zero to 30 (in weeks). The results indicate that statistically significant quantile dependencies exist between Google query data and the Pound's exchange rates, which point to the direction of one of the main implications in this field, that is to examine whether the movements in one economic variable can cause reactions in other economic variables.

UNLABELLED
Anthocyanins can be changed into dark purplish color during pound cake preparation due to high temperature and alkaline baking soda, which lowers color acceptance by consumers. To stabilize a red color of anthocyanins in pound cake enriched with aronia () powder, lemon juice was added to contain final concentrations of 0, 1, 2, and 3% (w/w) in the pound cake, which were assigned as control, PL1%, PL2%, and PL3%, respectively. As lemon juice amount increased, redness (a) and sensory color perception as well as overall acceptance were enhanced, whereas hardness, gumminess, and chewiness decreased in texture profile analysis. In a model system, the addition of lemon juice to aronia solution caused bathochromic shift and hyperchromic effect in UV-Vis absorption spectrum, which are typical phenomena of copigmentation derived from interactions between anthocyanins and copigments. The results indicate that lemon juice improved color acceptance for aronia pound cake by copigmentation.
