Social psychology and psychobiology have a rich historical connection, although over the last half century these two disciplines have seemingly become estranged. To a significant extent, that alienation arose from an archaic and nonviable model of behavioral biology that retarded the development of both disciplines. With the emergence of modern biological perspectives, this impediment no longer limits fruitful collaborations among social psychologists and psychobiologists. Indeed, some of the most exciting contemporary developments are emerging from the areas of social neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, and behavioral neuroscience. We review the history of links between social psychology and psychobiology, the factors that led to the segregation of these subdisciplines, and the modern biological perspectives that provide the basis for reintegration of these disciplines.

In the 1950s, young faculty in Psychology and Physiology/Biology at the newly established Florida State University recognized common interests in the study of sensory systems. They spontaneously formed one of this country's earliest interdisciplinary research cohorts in the emerging field of "psychobiology". In the 1960s, this group established a formal graduate program in Psychobiology, acquired resources for building a new laboratory and for supporting pre- and post-doctoral students, and began the expansion of faculty and research focuses that continues to this day. In 1991, FSU's Psychobiology Program was re-branded as a Program in Neuroscience that awards a doctoral degree. It now encompasses faculty and students from four academic departments in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Human Sciences, and Medicine. This paper traces some main developments in our 50-year history of these research and training efforts.

One hundred years since his birth, fifty years after his Nobel achievement, Daniel Bovet still emerges as one of the key figures of both pharmacology and psychobiology, the biological and evolutionary roots of behaviour. The life and scientific activities of Daniel Bovet (1907-1992) are closely linked to the 'golden years' of pharmacology, the exceptional development of this science from the end of the 1930s to the 1960s. Later on, from the 1960s to the end of his scientific career, Bovet entered a new field, psychobiology, through the study of the effects of drugs active on the nervous system and their effects on behaviour. This approach led him to explore different aspects of the biology of behaviour, namely the role of individual differences, the genetic determinants of behaviour and their implications on learning and memory. It is therefore evident that the range of his scientific activity has been very broad, a fact difficultly conceivable in years of extreme specialization.
