Jacob Levy Moreno, the well-known creator of psychodrama, had a close epistolary relationship with the Spanish psychiatrist Ramón Sarró; a collection of these letters has been located in the Sarró personal archive, deposited in the Library of Catalonia. After locating and arranging this correspondence, we proceeded to analyze and contextualize its contents. The analysis of this collection serves as a basis to outline the context in which the relationship between Moreno and Sarró developed, the role played by certain psychotherapy congresses in strengthening their relationships, and the process that resulted in the University of Barcelona awarding Moreno Doctor Honoris Causa. This study has allowed us to identify certain areas of how psychodrama was received in Spain during the 1960s and reflect on the creation of international collaboration networks and the creation of schools and professional and academic legitimation strategies in the wake of the approaches to group psychotherapy and psychodrama that Moreno developed while based in New York. Psychiatric clinicians are faced with the challenge of remaining flexible and psychotherapeutically relevant to the broadening scope of patients with severe narcissistic and borderline personality disorders. Diagnostic sophistication among mental health professionals, increased availability of psychotherapy services, and economic pressures combine to cause the public to expect cost-effective, successful, and shorter duration of treatments. These treatment challenges are particularly poignant with the treatment of those narcissistic and borderline patients who have meager capacity for insight and limited verbal skills. This article describes the use of psychodynamically oriented and informed psychodrama for the treatment of narcissistic and borderline patients.

Moreno's psychodrama is a technique of training and of group therapy which obeys the laws of sociometry. At the beginning of his career, Moreno as Freud, found himself in a transcultural position which allowed him to better observe the "classical occidental individual" captive of his stereotypal "Tinned culture". The psychodrama aims to the liberation of the human being alienated in his individuality thus giving him back a creative and relational spontaneity owing to the cathartic value of the collective game and drama (taken is its etymological sense). The new American society, issued from the old Europe, allowed him to practise his theoretical conceptions of sociometry. If the Psychodrama is a method of remarkable efficiency in the training of dynamic psychology of groups, its therapeutics indications must be given with the greatest caution, in order to be at any time under medical control, specifically psychiatric control.

The terms psychodrama, sociodrama, and didactic psychodrama are defined. These three action techniques are compared with respect to their differing goals and methodologies. The application of the use of didactic psychodrama and sociodrama with student nurses undergoing Psychiatric Nurse Training is outlined, together with verbal reports elicited from the students following, a) a 20-week study day programme where didactic psychodrama was used on an regular basis, and b) a sociodrama workshop. It is concluded that sociodrama and didactic psychodrama are powerful action learning methods that can be successfully employed with junior student psychiatric nurses. It is also acknowledged that the underlying rationale, and procedural details of these two methods differ from, those associated with more conventional social skills based training approaches, and these differences have implications for trainers.

Psychodrama is the process of enacting or reenacting relevant aspects or roles from current and past events to instill hope in clients who are facing life issues. This article examines the outcomes ofa five-stage psychodrama treatment through a social worker's direct participation in a partial hospitalization program. Observation notes and supervisors' inputs were used to analyze the therapeutic outcomes of 13 patients who assumed the role of protagonist. Rather than through use of a symptom checklist, the treatment outcomes were measured on the basis of the ability of each patient to connect feelings to expressed concerns and anticipated changes. Through content analysis of communication patterns, these concerns were linked to eight therapeutic themes: change in emotions, family of origin issues, impact of group work, relationships with others, impact of the past, self-awareness, self-worth, and shift of personal views. This study highlights the importance of the combined effort of both the therapist and the patient, making psychodrama a bridge to further treatment. Psychodrama is both a clinical method and an educational opportunity for social workers.
