Six cases of ureteritis cystica are reported. Pathogenesis and diagnosis are discussed emphasizing the papillary tumour as an important differential diagnosis. A conservative attitude is recommended with a follow-up until the intravenous urography has normalized.

This is a case report on a patient with left renal stone and ureteritis cystica. The patient was a 57-year-old male, and he was admitted for a thorough examination of his renal stone. Many sharply-defined radiolucent filling defects were detected in the upper and middle ureter by retrograde pyelography, and he was diagnosed with ureteritis cystica. Since the patient had severe renal function damage, left nephro-ureterectomy was performed. This is the 29th case of pyeloureteritis cystica reported in Japan, and here in its clinical aspects are discussed.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is well established as a renal mass-forming inflammatory process. However, a ureteral counterpart is minimally recognized. In this article, we present a case of xanthogranulomatous ureteritis in an 81-year-old woman, mimicking ureteral involvement by cancer in a radical cystectomy specimen for invasive urothelial carcinoma. Similar to the pathogenesis of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, the patient was noted to have ureteral obstruction by calculus and had urine culture positive for . To our knowledge, this is the first report of xanthogranulomatous ureteritis associated with this pathogen and the only report associated with concurrent bladder cancer. Increased pathologist and urologist awareness of xanthogranulomatous ureteritis expands the spectrum of pseudotumoral processes of the ureter.

Ureteritis cystica is rare, benign entity that associates with chronic urothelial irritation such as recurrent urinary tract infection or nephrolithiasis. It is often diagnosed incidentally on routine imaging or ureteroscopy in asymptomatic individuals. In this case report, we present the retrograde pyelogram and ureteroscopy images of a rare case of extensive unilateral ureteritis cystica in a 78-year-old female presenting for elective stone surgery.

We have described a 58-year-old man in whom an unusually fibroblastic ureteritis cystica at the ureteropelvic junction caused partial obstruction and ureteral colic. Local resection resulted in relief of renal pain and improved urinary flow through the ureter. Explanations for the unusual nature of the lesion and only partial relief of obstruction after surgical resection are proposed.

Efficacy of the ureteric stricture (UC) treatment, using energy of the Holmium (in 55% patients) and the diode (in 45%) lasers was analyzed. In 37 (77%) patient spositive results were achieved already after one session, in 4 (8.3%) — one more session was performed in terms up to 3 mo after the first one, in 3 (6.3%) — two sessions were per' formed. Positive results were achieved in total in 91.6% patients. Application of laser energy in treatment of UC is effective and not dependent from the energy kind and con' stitutes a perspective method of the patient's endoscopic treatment.

Review
Although the ureter is functionally simply a tube to transport urine, ureteric surgery requires detailed anatomical knowledge and advanced surgical skills, because the ureter has a delicate blood supply. Therefore, the urological surgeon must have distinct strategies available to bridge ureteric defects of various sites and lengths. Furthermore, handling during and after surgery should be individualized to the patient's pre- and intraoperative situation. In this review, the indications for reconstruction of a specific ureteric defect, the required techniques and postoperative recommendations are discussed.

Review
Duplex kidneys occur in 0.8% of the general population, many of whom are asymptomatic. Children with duplex kidneys may be prone to urinary tract infections because of vesico-ureteric reflux or obstruction. Surgical management is usually required once symptoms occur. Increasing numbers of duplex kidneys are now prenatally diagnosed by ultrasound, resulting in the development of early postnatal strategies to try and reduce morbidity.
