Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly being used in the diagnosis of central nervous system disorders in veterinary patients and is quickly becoming the imaging modality of choice in evaluation of brain and intracranial disease. This article provides an overview of the basic principles of MRI, a description of sequences and their applications in brain imaging, and an approach to interpretation of brain MRI. A detailed discussion of imaging findings in general intracranial disorders including hydrocephalus, vasogenic edema, brain herniation, and seizure-associated changes, and the MR diagnosis of congenital brain disorders is provided. MRI evaluation of acquired brain disorders is described in a second companion article.

Human and veterinary medicine obviously share most concepts and contents. However, both academic and scientific issues and the daily practice of many health disciplines can differ largely between human and veterinary medicine. Such differences can easily go unnoticed among other healthcare collectives or the general public. The aim of the present work was to provide an update, as well as some definitions of what we understand under the terms Veterinary Public Health and Veterinary Health Policy.

Review
The interest in avian medicine grows every year, and the degree of successful diagnosis and treatment in our avian patient has increased tremendously over the last 2 decades. For a veterinarian interested in avian practice there are many decisions to be made before one just accepts a patient. As outlined in this summary, there are many decisions to make regarding the level and diversity a practitioner wishes to explore (only exotics, poultry, ratites, Columbiforms, raptors, and so on) and then which equipment will be necessary to perform that level of practice. There is no master list of equipment that every avian practitioner must own. Needs must be catered to the species seen and the individual interest of the practitioner. Continuing education courses are now offered throughout the country on various aspects of avian medicine. The Association of Avian Veterinarians provides a journal, yearly conference, Web site, and a wide range of support materials. The author implores interested veterinarians to investigate these great learning experiences before casually deciding to add avian patients to a general companion animal practice.

Review
The author describes the State Food and Veterinary Service of Lithuania, the competent authority for public and animal health in Lithuania. The Director of the Service, the Chief Veterinary Officer, reports directly to the Prime Minister. Lithuania is divided into ten counties and thirty-four districts. The State Food and Veterinary Service has regional units in all the counties and districts and has a staff of 1,380 employees. The main tasks of the State Food and Veterinary Service are to implement the basic EU principles of market supervision in Lithuania, with an emphasis on ensuring food safety and control; to establish a unified food control system following the principle "from farm to fork"; to create a favourable environment for the free movement of goods between Lithuania and the countries of the EU while ensuring the safety of imported products of animal origin; to promote continuous improvements in the welfare of animals and to protect the animal population from contagious diseases.
