The author describes the State Food and Veterinary Service of Lithuania, the competent authority for public and animal health in Lithuania. The Director of the Service, the Chief Veterinary Officer, reports directly to the Prime Minister. Lithuania is divided into ten counties and thirty-four districts. The State Food and Veterinary Service has regional units in all the counties and districts and has a staff of 1,380 employees. The main tasks of the State Food and Veterinary Service are to implement the basic EU principles of market supervision in Lithuania, with an emphasis on ensuring food safety and control; to establish a unified food control system following the principle "from farm to fork"; to create a favourable environment for the free movement of goods between Lithuania and the countries of the EU while ensuring the safety of imported products of animal origin; to promote continuous improvements in the welfare of animals and to protect the animal population from contagious diseases.

Livestock farming was going on in the then Southern Rhodesia, before the advent of colonization in 1890. However, history of conventional veterinary medicine dates back only to the arrival of the Pioneer Column, 115 years ago. At that time, veterinary infrastructure and staffing was poor relative to size of the country, in terms of livestock census. Despite that, few veterinarians on the ground managed to eradicate rinderpest (RD), rabies for 37 years, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), glanders, epizootic lymphangitis, East coast fever (ECF) and contagious epivaginitis. However, the 1964-1979 war of liberation (WOL), also dubbed Second Chimurenga, disrupted, among other things, gains that had been made in veterinary medicine thus far. After independence, this drawback was addressed head-on. The 1980-1990 era was approached on a note of optimism and enthusiasm to uphold high standard set by professional predecessors. The aim was to learn from previous mistakes, shift emphasis from primary animal health care to herd health and production management. By necessity the livestock policy, and indeed, the Animal Health Act, should be reviewed in the wake of the fast-track land acquisition and resettlement drive, "War on Land" also referred to as Third Chimurenga. This paper traces the history of veterinary medicine in Zimbabwe from the 1950s.

Review
Earlier detection allows earlier intervention, and thus improved treatment success. Senior profiling improves anesthetic safety by identifying hidden existing diseases and permitting the postponement of anesthesia or altering the anesthetic plan. Furthermore, pharmaceutic safety is increased through the detection of underlying diseases that may preclude the use of certain drugs or suggest new alternative treatments. Many dietary recommendations are based on disease diagnosis, making senior profiling an important dietary database. Finally, earlier disease management by means of improved anesthetic, pharmaceutic, and dietary recommendations offers our patients and clients the best medical management possible.
