Review
The complex and sometimes controversial subject of malrotation and midgut volvulus is reviewed commencing with the 19th-century Bohemian anatomist, Václav Treitz, who described the suspensory muscle anchoring of the duodenal-jejunal junction in the left upper quadrant, and continuing with William Ladd, the 20th-century American "father of pediatric surgery" who pioneered the surgical treatment of midgut volvulus. In this review, we present the interesting history of malrotation and discuss the current radiologic and surgical controversies surrounding its diagnosis and treatment. In the symptomatic patient with malrotation and possible midgut volvulus, prompt diagnosis is critical. The clinical examination and plain film are often confusing, and delayed diagnosis can lead to significant morbidity and death. Despite recent intense interest in the position of the mesenteric vessels on US and CT scans, the upper gastrointestinal series remains the fastest and most accurate method of demonstrating duodenal obstruction, the position of the ligament of Treitz, and, if the contrast agent is followed distally, cecal malposition. Controversy exists over the management of asymptomatic patients with malrotation in whom the diagnosis is made incidentally during evaluation for nonspecific complaints, prior to reflux surgery, and in those with heterotaxy syndromes.

Review
Volvulus of transverse colon is a rare cause of large bowel obstruction. Diagnosis can be challenging and the effective management remains controversial. We report a case of volvulus of the transverse colon in a 76-year-old woman. The literature regarding diagnosis and treatment of such pathology was also reviewed.

Colonic volvulus is an uncommon, often life-threatening condition, in non-human primates. Twenty-six cases of colonic volvulus in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) were identified in necropsy records spanning 38 years at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). This report represents the largest collection of colonic volvuli in rhesus macaques.

Review
INTRODUCTION
This is a report of two male patients (35 and 54 years old, respectively) admitted to our surgical department with signs of small-bowel obstruction.
CASE PRESENTATIONS
Diagnostic workup with plain abdominal radiographs and, more specifically, computed tomography suggested the possibility of bowel rotation. In order to exclude any possibility of associated intestinal ischemia, both patients underwent exploratory laparotomy, which revealed a midgut volvulus without any associated obvious cause or pathology.
DISCUSSION
Both patients had an eventful outcome. Epidemiologic characteristics, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, surgical treatment, and morbidity-mortality rates of small-bowel volvulus have been reviewed and thoroughly discussed.

BACKGROUND
The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical characteristics and treatment experience of intestinal volvulus, and to analyze the incidence of adverse events and related risk factors of intestinal volvulus.
METHODS
Thirty patients with intestinal volvulus admitted to the Digestive Emergency Department of Xijing Hospital from January 2015 to December 2020 were selected. The clinical manifestations, laboratory tests, treatment and prognosis were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS
A total of 30 patients with volvulus were enrolled in this study, including 23 males (76.7%), with a median age of 52 years (33-66 years). The main clinical manifestations were abdominal pain in 30 cases (100%), nausea and vomiting in 20 cases (67.7%), cessation of exhaust and defecation in 24 cases (80%), and fever in 11 cases (36.7%). The positions of intestinal volvulus were jejunum in 11 cases (36.7%), ileum and ileocecal in 10 cases (33.3%), sigmoid colon in 9 cases (30%). All 30 patients received surgical treatment. Among the 30 patients underwent surgery, 11 patients developed intestinal necrosis. We found that the longer the disease duration (> 24 h), the higher the incidence of intestinal necrosis, and the higher the incidence of ascites, white blood cell count and neutrophil ratio in the intestinal necrosis group were significantly higher than those in the non-intestinal necrosis group (p < 0.05). After treatment, 1 patient died of septic shock after operation, and 2 patients with recurrent volvulus were followed up within 1 year. The overall cure rate was 90%, the mortality rate was 3.3%, and the recurrence rate was 6.6%.
CONCLUSION
Laboratory examination, abdominal CT and dual-source CT are very important for the diagnosis of volvulus in patients with abdominal pain as the main symptom. Increased white blood cell count, neutrophil ratio, ascites and long course of disease are important for predicting intestinal volvulus accompanied by intestinal necrosis. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can save lives and prevent serious complications.

BACKGROUND
Intestinal Malrotation is congenital that complicates 1 in every 200 births. It results from abnormal fixation and rotation of the gut tube during fetal development. It is usually asymptomatic and most cases are diagnosed during childhood and the condition is seldom seen in adults. Also, it can present as an incidental finding in imaging or patients undergoing laparotomy for other reasons. Midgut Volvulus can lead to small obstruction it warrants surgical intervention.
CASE PRESENTATION
Our case is a 20 years old black African male from Khartoum (Sudan) who presented to the emergency department with features of intestinal obstruction he was resuscitated and underwent a CT scan of the abdomen that showed malrotation of the intestine with volvulus for which he underwent a Ladd procedure.
CONCLUSION
Small bowel obstruction due to volvulus complicating malrotation is a rare presentation in adulthood and the Ladd procedure can be utilized to manage such case.

An 18 hours old foal presented with a suspected meconium impaction. There was no response to treatment and a tentative diagnosis of atresia coli (AC) was made. Surgical intervention was declined and the foal was euthanized 12 hours after admission. Type 3 AC was confirmed on post-mortem examination, with the colon ending at the left ventral colon. A 1,080 large colon volvulus (LCV) at the sternal flexure was present. It is speculated that AC could predispose the foal to LCV. Histopathology was not performed but would be useful in further cases of AC.
