This systematic review investigates the impact of meditation on neural responses to pain, as measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Up to March 2024, we conducted searches across four databases for human studies implementing fMRI to assess the efficacy of meditation for pain relief. Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Our systematic review indicates that activation of the insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and orbitofrontal cortex is positively associated with meditation for pain relief, while activity in regions like the amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex is negatively correlated with pain relief. Meta-analyses consistently reveal the involvement of various brain regions, including the insula, putamen, amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex, precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, superior temporal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, and caudate nucleus, in meditation-induced alleviation of pain. These findings suggest ccthat meditation acts on specific brain regions related to pain, mood, and cognition, providing insight into the potential mechanisms underlying the pain-alleviating effects of meditation on both pain sensations and emotional experiences.

Meningioma is the most common type of primary brain tumor which presents with a variety of neurological manifestations. Surgical resection tends to be the preferred treatment. The occurrence of seizures after resection is common, which occur either early, within seven days of operation, or late. Our meta-analysis investigated the possible predictors of early and late postoperative seizures. We assessed the relevant observational studies on predictors of postoperative seizures published in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from January 2000 to September 2022, and those that met inclusion criteria were included. We calculated the association between potential predicting factors and postoperative seizures, odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) applying either random or fixed-effect models. The early and late postoperative seizures were evaluated individually. Thirteen observational studies involving 4176 patients were included. Seizures occurred in 250 (6%) and 584 (14%) patients, respectively, in the early and late postoperative phases. Shared predictors for early and late seizures included tumors involving the motor cortex (OR = 2.7; 95% CI: 1.67-4.38, OR = 2.46; 95% CI: 1.68-3.61), postoperative neurological deficit (OR = 4.68; 95% CI: 2.67-8.22, OR = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.39-2.92), and preoperative seizures (OR = 2.52; 95% CI: 1.82-3.49, OR = 4.35; 95% CI: 3.29-5.75). Peritumoral edema (OR = 1.99; 95% CI: 1.49-2.64) was a significant factor only among late postoperative seizure patients while surgical complications (OR = 3.77; 95% CI: 2.39-5.93) was a significant factor solely for early postoperative seizures. Meningioma patients commonly experience early and late postoperative seizures. Identifying predictors of postoperative seizures is essential to diagnose and manage them effectively.

IMPORTANCE
Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) interventions have been shown to be efficacious in several mental disorders, but the optimal dose stimulation parameters for each disorder are unknown.
OBJECTIVE
To define NIBS dose stimulation parameters associated with the greatest efficacy in symptom improvement across mental disorders.
DATA SOURCES
Studies were drawn from an updated (to April 30, 2023) previous systematic review based on a search of PubMed, OVID, and Web of Knowledge.
STUDY SELECTION
Randomized clinical trials were selected that tested transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for any mental disorder in adults aged 18 years or older.
DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS
Two authors independently extracted the data. A 1-stage dose-response meta-analysis using a random-effects model was performed. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to test robustness of the findings. This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) reporting guideline.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES
The main outcome was the near-maximal effective doses of total pulses received for TMS and total current dose in coulombs for tDCS.
RESULTS
A total of 110 studies with 4820 participants (2659 men [61.4%]; mean [SD] age, 42.3 [8.8] years) were included. The following significant dose-response associations emerged with bell-shaped curves: (1) in schizophrenia, high-frequency (HF) TMS on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (LDLPFC) for negative symptoms (χ2 = 9.35; df = 2; P = .009) and TMS on the left temporoparietal junction for resistant hallucinations (χ2 = 36.52; df = 2; P < .001); (2) in depression, HF-DLPFC TMS (χ2 = 14.49; df = 2; P < .001); (3) in treatment-resistant depression, LDLPFC tDCS (χ2 = 14.56; df = 2; P < .001); and (4) in substance use disorder, LDLPFC tDCS (χ2 = 33.63; df = 2; P < .001). The following significant dose-response associations emerged with plateaued or ascending curves: (1) in depression, low-frequency (LF) TMS on the right DLPFC (RDLPFC) with ascending curve (χ2 = 25.67; df = 2; P = .001); (2) for treatment-resistant depression, LF TMS on the bilateral DLPFC with ascending curve (χ2 = 5.86; df = 2; P = .004); (3) in obsessive-compulsive disorder, LF-RDLPFC TMS with ascending curve (χ2 = 20.65; df = 2; P < .001) and LF TMS on the orbitofrontal cortex with a plateaued curve (χ2 = 15.19; df = 2; P < .001); and (4) in posttraumatic stress disorder, LF-RDLPFC TMS with ascending curve (χ2 = 54.15; df = 2; P < .001). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the main findings.
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE
The study findings suggest that NIBS yields specific outcomes based on dose parameters across various mental disorders and brain regions. Clinicians should consider these dose parameters when prescribing NIBS. Additional research is needed to prospectively validate the findings in randomized, sham-controlled trials and explore how other parameters contribute to the observed dose-response association.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating mental disorder and the leading cause of disease burden. Major depressive disorder is associated with emotional impairment and cognitive deficit. Cognitive control, which is the ability to use perceptions, knowledge, and information about goals and motivations to shape the selection of goal-directed actions or thoughts, is a primary function of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Psychotropic medications are one of the main treatments for MDD, but they are not effective for all patients. An alternative treatment is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Previous studies have provided mixed results on the cognitive-enhancing effects of TMS treatment in patients with MDD. Some studies have found significant improvement, while others have not. There is a lack of understanding of the specific effects of different TMS protocols and stimulation parameters on cognitive control in MDD. Thus, this review aims to synthesize the effectiveness of the TMS methods and a qualitative assessment of their potential benefits in improving cognitive functioning in patients with MDD. We reviewed 21 studies in which participants underwent a treatment of any transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol, such as repetitive TMS or theta-burst stimulation. One of the primary outcome measures was any change in the cognitive control process. Overall, the findings indicate that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may enhance cognitive function in patients with MDD. Most of the reviewed studies supported the notion of cognitive improvement following TMS treatment. Notably, improvements were predominantly observed in inhibition, attention, set shifting/flexibility, and memory domains. However, fewer significant improvements were detected in evaluations of visuospatial function and recognition, executive function, phonemic fluency, and speed of information processing. This review found evidence supporting the use of TMS as a treatment for cognitive deficits in patients with MDD. The results are promising, but further research is needed to clarify the specific TMS protocol and stimulation locations that are most effective.

BACKGROUND
Gray matter alterations play a role in the panic disorder's pathophysiology origin. However, the current literature seemed inadequate to reach a consistent conclusion. Therefore, we conducted this gray matter meta-analysis on panic disorder.
METHODS
A systematic review and a voxel-wise meta-analysis based on voxel-based morphometry were conducted for the gray matter studies in patients with panic disorder. The Seed-based d Mapping toolbox was applied for the voxel-wise meta-analysis. Fourteen gray matter studies (954 subjects) were enrolled in the current meta-analysis. The subgroup analysis of typical-onset versus late-onset patients was also performed. At last, the clinical severity was meta-regressed with gray matter alterations.
RESULTS
Significant gray matter alterations were found in the left para-cingulate gyrus and the right amygdala of panic disorder patients. The subgroup analysis of typical-onset panic disorder patients showed a similar pattern. However, gray matter alterations were demonstrated in the bilateral opercular cortex of late-onset panic disorder patients. A significant association between the clinical severity and the gray matter alterations was found in the fronto-cingulate regions of panic disorder patients.
CONCLUSION
Gray matter alterations might represent a significant pillar of panic disorder's neurobiology, especially for the amygdala, cingulate, and frontal regions. Future gray matter studies in panic disorder should be needed to reconfirm this pattern of gray matter alterations.

This review synthesises individual differences in neural processes related to emotion regulation (ER). It comprises individual differences in self-reported and physiological regulation success, self-reported ER-related traits, and demographic variables, to assess their correlation with brain activation during ER tasks. Considering region-of-interest (ROI) and whole-brain analyses, the review incorporated data from 52 functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. Results can be summarized as follows: (1) Self-reported regulation success (assessed by emotional state ratings after regulation) and self-reported ER-related traits (assessed by questionnaires) correlated with brain activity in the lateral prefrontal cortex. (2) Amygdala activation correlated with ER-related traits only in ROI analyses, while it was associated with regulation success in whole-brain analyses. (3) For demographic and physiological measures, there was no systematic overlap in effects reported across studies. In showing that individual differences in regulation success and ER-related traits can be traced back to differences in the neural activity of brain regions associated with emotional reactivity (amygdala) and cognitive control (lateral prefrontal cortex), our findings can inform prospective personalised intervention models.

BACKGROUND
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by changes in mood that alternate between (hypo) mania or depression and mixed states, often associated with functional impairment and cognitive dysfunction. But little is known about biomarkers that contribute to the development and sustainment of cognitive deficits. The aim of this study was to review the association between neurocognition and biomarkers across different mood states.
METHOD
Search databases were Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed. A systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines. Risk of bias was assessed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Studies were selected that focused on the correlation between neuroimaging, physiological, genetic or peripheral biomarkers and cognition in at least two phases of BD: depression, (hypo)mania, euthymia or mixed. RESULTS
A total of 1824 references were screened, identifying 1023 published articles, of which 336 were considered eligible. Only 16 provided information on the association between biomarkers and cognition in the different affective states of BD. The included studies found: (i) Differences in levels of total cholesterol and C reactive protein depending on mood state; (ii) There is no association found between cognition and peripheral biomarkers; (iii) Neuroimaging biomarkers highlighted hypoactivation of frontal areas as distinctive of acute state of BD; (iv) A deactivation failure has been reported in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), potentially serving as a trait marker of BD.
CONCLUSION
Only a few recent articles have investigated biomarker-cognition associations in BD mood phases. Our findings underline that there appear to be central regions involved in BD that are observed in all mood states. However, there appear to be underlying mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction that may vary across different mood states in BD. This review highlights the importance of standardizing the data and the assessment of cognition, as well as the need for biomarkers to help prevent acute symptomatic phases of the disease, and the associated functional and cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of inhaled corticosteroids (budesonide, beclomethasone, or fluticasone propionate) in preventing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) for premature infants.
METHOD
Electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of science, Scopus, and Cochrane library, were searched from databases inception to January 2022 for eligible randomized controlled trials. Clinical outcomes such as BPD, mortality, BPD or death, adverse events, and neurodevelopmental outcomes were assessed.
RESULTS
Overall, budesonide was significantly associated with a reduction in BPD at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age (RR 0.48; 95 % CI [0.38, 0.62]) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) (RR 0.75; 95 % CI [0.63, 0.89]) compared with control treatments. Early longer duration inhalation of budesonide alone was associated with a lower risk of BPD at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age and PDA compared with controls. Early shorter duration intratracheal instillation of budesonide with surfactant as vehicle was associated with a lower risk of BPD at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age and all-cause mortality compared with surfactant. There was no statistically significant difference between budesonide and control groups regarding neurodevelopmental impairment. Beclomethasone and fluticasone propionate did not show any superior or inferior effect on clinical outcomes compared to control treatments.
CONCLUSION
These findings suggest that budesonide, especially intratracheal instillation of budesonide using surfactant as a vehicle, is a safe and effective option in preventing BPD for preterm infants. More well-design large-scale trials with long-term follow-ups are necessary to verify the present findings.

This study aimed to evaluate the association of the six parameters, namely stimulation intensity, stimulation frequency, pulses per session, treatment duration, number of sessions, and total number of pulses with the efficacy of conventional transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). A random-effects dose-response meta-analysis of blinded randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 2391 participants were conducted to examine the dose-effect relationship of six stimulation parameters. Any of the six parameters significantly individually predicted proportion of variance in efficacy: pulses per session (R²=52.7%), treatment duration (R²=51.2%), total sessions (R²=50.9%), frequency (R²=49.6%), total pulses (R²=49.5%), and intensity (R²= 40.4%). Besides, we identified frequency as a potential parameter interacting with the other five parameters, resulting in a significant increase in variance(ΔR) ranging from 5.0% to 16.7%. Finally, we found that RCTs using frequency > 10 Hz compared to those of 10 Hz showed better dose-effect relationships. We conclude that the six stimulation parameters significantly predict the dose-effect relationship of conventional rTMS on TRD. Besides, higher stimulation frequency, higher stimulation intensity, and adequate number of pulses were associated with treatment efficacy.
