BACKGROUND
Obesity is a global health concern, and understanding its prevalence among medical students is crucial for shaping targeted interventions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to comprehensively assess the prevalence of obesity and overweight among medical students.
METHODS
A systematic literature search was conducted across major databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, in order to identify relevant studies that evaluated obesity and overweight among medical students. Inclusion criteria encompassed published and peer-reviewed studies reporting the prevalence of obesity among medical students.
RESULTS
A total of 1245 studies were screened based on their titles and abstracts, and 99 studies comprised a total sample size of 47,455 medical students across diverse geographical regions were included in this study. The overall pooled prevalence of overweight among medical students was estimated at 18% (95% CI: 17%-20%), with obesity at 9% (95% CI: 7%-11%). The combined prevalence of excess weight (overweight and obesity) was calculated to be 24% (95% CI: 22%-27%). Meta-regression results indicated a significant correlation between study year and overweight/obesity prevalence (p < 0.05), with a trend towards increasing prevalence over time. Male medical students exhibited a higher pooled prevalence, increasing with the percentage of male participants.
CONCLUSION
This systematic review and meta-analysis provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence of obesity among medical students globally. In summary, obesity and overweight present a substantial worldwide health concern, especially among susceptible groups such as medical students, whose prevalence is on the rise. It is crucial to grasp the extent and contributing factors of obesity among medical students to formulate precise interventions aimed at fostering healthier habits and alleviating the adverse impacts of obesity on both physical and mental health.

BACKGROUND
Although a common injury there is a lack of published primary data to inform clinical management of sports related brachial plexus injuries.
METHODS
A systematic search was completed in Medline, CINAHL, PubMed, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science databases and Google Scholar from inception to August 2023 according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Methodological quality assessment of included articles was with the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Studies providing primary data as to the rehabilitative management of diagnosed or suspected brachial plexus injuries sustained when playing contact sports were included.
RESULTS
Sixty-five studies were identified and screened, of which, 8 case reports were included, incorporating 10 participants with a mean age of 19.8 (±4.09) years. There was wide heterogeneity in injury severity, injury reporting, physical examination and imaging approaches documented. 9 of 10 participants returned to competitive sports, though follow-up periods also varied widely. Whilst return to play criteria varied between studies, the most consistent indicator was pain-free shoulder range of motion and strength.
CONCLUSIONS
There is a distinct lack of data available to inform evidence-based rehabilitation management of sports related brachial plexus injury. Only 8 individual case reports contain published data reporting on 10 athletes. Further reporting is critical to inform clinical management.

BACKGROUND
Previous studies need to be aggregated and updated. We aim to assess the efficacy of laser acupuncture (LA) in knee osteoarthritis (OA) through a meta-analysis.
METHODS
Electronic databases were searched for studies investigating laser acupuncture's efficacy in managing OA. Data were collected from the beginning of each database to 2022 (up to March). The "WOMAC total score," "WOMAC stiffness score," "WOMAC pain score," "WOMAC physical function score," and "VAS score" were the key outcomes of interest. The Der Simonian-Laird method for random effects was used.
RESULTS
Twenty-five randomized controlled clinical trials met our criteria and were included (2075 patients). Comparisons of interest is the LA versus Sham LA (efficacy), LA versus. A (Acupuncture) (comparative effectiveness), LA combined with A versus A (effectiveness as an adjunct), and any other research used LA in their treatment. Laser irradiation is effective in patients with Knee OA. LA is also effective and has almost the same outcome as laser irradiation. LA can achieve almost the same effect as manual acupuncture, even better than acupuncture in some studies.
CONCLUSION
Laser acupuncture is more or less effective in patients with OA; better efficacy will be achieved under appropriate laser parameters (810 nm, 785 nm) in the LA versus Sham LA group. Many studies have diverse results, possibly due to unstaged analysis of patients' disease, inappropriate selection of acupoints, lack of remote combined acupoints, and unreasonable laser parameters. Furthermore, a combination of acupoints was found to be more effective, which aligns with the combined-acupoints application of traditional Chinese medicine.

BACKGROUND
This meta-analysis reviews the evidence for the risks and benefits associated with orthokeratology (OK) treatment compared with other methods of myopia control in children and adults.
METHODS
A systematic search of Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Pubmed, Embase and Ovid was conducted from database inception to 22nd August 2021. Studies that reported on risks, visual and ocular biometric effects of OK in patients > 5 years of age with myopia (- 0.75 to - 6.00D) were included. Main outcomes are change in axial length and any adverse event.
RESULTS
Fourty-five papers were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The quality of data was variable and of moderate certainty, and selection bias likely skewed the results towards a relative benefit for OK. The rate of axial elongation in children was lower for OK treatment compared to other treatment modalities at one year (MD - 0.16 mm, 95% CI - 0.25 to - 0.07). Rate of change in axial length in children rebounded after OK discontinuation compared to participants who continued treatment (MD 0.10 mm, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.14). Adults and children wearing OK were up to 3.79 times more likely to experience an adverse event when compared with conventional contact lenses (OR 3.79, 95% CI 1.24 to ll.), though this evidence base is underdeveloped and requires additional well-designed studies for substantial conclusions to be drawn.
CONCLUSIONS
OK arrests myopia progression while in use, however, there remain unanswered questions about the optimal duration of treatment, discontinuation effects and long-term risk for adverse events.

BACKGROUND
In knee osteoarthritis (KOA), treatments involving knee injections of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC), adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC), or umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC) have shown promise in alleviating symptoms. However, which types of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the best therapeutic outcomes remain uncertain.
METHOD
We systematically searched PubMed, OVID, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library until January 1, 2024. The study evaluated five endpoints: Visual Analog Score (VAS) for Pain, Range of Motion (ROM), Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS), Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and adverse events (ADs). Standard meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were performed using Stata 16.0.
RESULTS
Fifteen studies involving 585 patients were included in the meta-analysis. Standard meta-analysis revealed significant improvements with MSCs in VAS score (P < 0.001), knee ROM (P < 0.001), and WOMAC (P < 0.016) compared to traditional therapy. In the network meta-analysis, autologous MSCs significantly improved VAS score [SMD = 2.94, 95% CI (1.90, 4.56)] and knee ROM [SMD = 0.26, 95% CI (0.08, 0.82)] compared to traditional therapy. Similarly, BM-MSC significantly improved VAS score [SMD = 0.31, 95% CI (0.11, 0.91)] and knee ROM [SMD = 0.26, 95% CI (0.08, 0.82)] compared to hyaluronic acid. However, compared with traditional therapy, autologous or allogeneic MSCs were associated with more adverse reactions [SMD = 0.11, 95% CI (0.02, 0.59)], [SMD = 0.13, 95% CI (0.002, 0.72)]. Based on the surface under the cumulative ranking results, autologous BM-MSC showed the most improvement in ROM and pain relief in KOA patients, UC-MSC (SUCRA 94.1%) were most effective for positive WORMS, and AD-MSC (SUCRA 70.6%) were most effective for WOMAC-positive patients.
CONCLUSION
MSCs transplantation effectively treats KOA patients, with autologous BM-MSC potentially offering more excellent benefits.

What interventions are effective in reducing development of hypertension and other cardiovascular complications in women who have had hypertensive disorders of pregnancy? A systematic review.
BACKGROUND
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) affect approximately 10-15% of pregnancies and pre-eclampsia affects 3-5% of pregnancies. Women with previous pre-eclampsia or HDP are at increased risk of hypertension (2 to 5 times) and major cardiovascular disease (1.5 to 3 times). There is little guidance on how to reduce this risk.
AIM
To establish if there are interventions in women with previous HDP or pre-eclampsia that reduce the risk of developing adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
METHOD
A protocol was submitted to PROSPERO; inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined and a search strategy implemented. Primary outcomes were: development of hypertension or change in blood pressure and development of other cardiovascular complications. Records and full texts were screened independently by two reviewers. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used for quality assessment.
RESULTS
3593 articles were screened. Nine articles were included. There were seven randomised-controlled trials and two quasi-experimental studies. One study trialled antihypertensive use, two studies looked at blood pressure monitoring and six studies focused on lifestyle interventions. Three trials reported significant reductions in diastolic blood pressure in the experimental group. No studies looked at the optimal time of intervention or the impact of interventions on the development of other long-term cardiovascular complications. Five studies reported participant feedback. The majority of studies were of low quality.
CONCLUSION
Further research needs to explore potential interventions and optimal timing of interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk. Women also need to be consulted about their preferences for discussions about cardiovascular risk and potential interventions.

BACKGROUND
Children living with HIV/AIDS are particularly vulnerable to under-nutrition. Under-nutrition associated with HIV/AIDS infection increases the rate of morbidity and mortality in children. To reaffirm a future objective, there needs to be evidence regarding the current national burden of under-nutrition and related factors among children infected with HIV. Hence, the objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled prevalence of under-nutrition, and the pooled effect sizes of associated factors among HIV-infected children in Ethiopia.
METHODS
We searched Ethiopian universities' online libraries, Google, Google Scholar, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Scopus to find the primary studies for this review. Publication bias was checked through Egger's regression test. Heterogeneity among the included studies was assessed using the I2 test. The data were extracted using Microsoft Excel and exported to STATA Version 14 statistical software. A random effect meta-analysis model was performed to estimate the pooled prevalence of Under-nutrition.
RESULTS
After reviewing 1449 primary studies, 16 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final meta-analysis. The estimated pooled prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting among children living with HIV/AIDS was 32.98% (95% CI: 22.47, 43.50), 29.76% (95% CI: 21.87, 37.66), and 21.16% (95% CI: 14.96, 27.35) respectively.
CONCLUSIONS
This study showed that under-nutrition among HIV-infected children in Ethiopia was significantly high. Under-nutrition is more common among HIV-infected children with opportunistic infections, child feeding problems, do not adhere to dietary recommendations, and have diarrhea. The national policies and strategies for ART service- provider centers should maximize their emphasis on reducing under-nutrition among HIV-infected children. Based on this finding, we recommend HIV intervention programs to address nutritional assessment and interventions for HIV-infected children.

J Strength Cond Res 38(7): 1341-1349, 2024-Integrating strength and endurance training in a single exercise session, even on separate days, can be physically demanding and time-consuming. Therefore, there is a growing interest in identifying efficient training methods that can concurrently enhance cardiovascular and neuromuscular performance through a singular training modality. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the effects of aerobic training with blood flow restriction (AT + BFR) on muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in healthy individuals. Our study was registered at PROSPERO and used multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science), seeking clinical trials that examined AT + BFR influence on muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in individuals aged 18-60 years and comparing with aerobic training without BFR. The risk of bias and method quality were assessed using the ROB2.0 tool and PEDro scale, respectively, and the quality of evidence was evaluated with the GRADE method. A random-effects model was used for meta-analysis, and standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated for each outcome. Of 4,462 records, 29 full texts were assessed for eligibility, with 7 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that AT + BFR was more beneficial for inducing muscle hypertrophy than aerobic training without BFR (SMD [95% CI] = 0.86 [0.37-1.35]; I2 = 42%). Furthermore, AT + BFR was associated with greater improvements in muscle strength (SMD [95% CI] = 0.41 [0.10-0.72]; I2 = 0%). Despite the generally high risk of bias for both outcomes, these encouraging findings underscore the clinical significance of AT + BFR as a compelling tool for enhancing neuromuscular parameters.

The Virtual Clinic Mobile Application (VCMA) is a valuable tool for managing and remotely monitoring patients with various medical conditions. It can alleviate the strain on outpatient services and offer follow-up options for patients who do not require a physical examination. A thorough understanding of recent literature can assist in identifying suitable functionalities for new development and future improvement of current applications (apps). This review study is aimed at identifying functional and nonfunctional requirements for VCMA. This study conducted a systematic search using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, Science Direct, ProQuest, and IEEE to gather requirements of VCMA articles published in English from the inception of the databases up to April 2022. Out of a total of 1223 articles, 76 met the inclusion criteria. These articles were then analyzed using conventional content analysis to extract and categorize their requirements. Two main themes and 8 subthemes in terms of VCMA requirements were extracted as follows: (1) functional requirements with 3 subthemes (demographic data documentation, health record, general features of the user interface (UI)); (2) nonfunctional requirements with 5 subthemes (usability, accessibility, compatibility, efficiency, and security). The findings highlight the importance of mHealth solutions for virtual care and the need for the development of apps based on the extracted functional and nonfunctional requirements for VCMA; however, controlled trials are necessary. It is recommended that transparent reporting of mHealth interventions be prioritized to enable effective interpretation of the extracted data.

Tendon injuries are common disorders in both workers and athletes, potentially impacting performance in both conditions. This is why the search for effective treatments is continuing.
OBJECTIVE(S)
The objective of this study was to analyze whether the ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis technique may be considered a procedure to reduce pain caused by tendinosis.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION
The search strategy included the PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, SciELO, and ScienceDirect up to the date of February 25, 2024. Randomized clinical trials that assessed pain caused by tendinosis using the Visual Analog Scale and Numeric Rating Scale were included. The studies were evaluated for quality using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2, and the evidence strength was assessed by the GRADEpro GDT.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS
Out of the 534 studies found, 8 were included in the review. A random-effects meta-analysis and standardized mean differences (SMD) were conducted. The ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis proved to be effective in reducing pain caused by tendinosis in the overall outcome (SMD = -0.97; 95% CI, -1.26 to -0.68; I2 = 58%; low certainty of evidence) and in the short-term (SMD = -0.83, 95% CI, -1.29 to -0.38; I2 = 65%; low certainty of evidence), midterm (SMD = -1.28; 95% CI, -1.65 to -0.91; I2 = 0%; moderate certainty of evidence), and long-term (SMD = -0.94; 95% CI, -1.62 to -0.26; I2 = 71%; low certainty of evidence) subgroups.
CONCLUSION(S)
The application of the ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis technique for reducing pain caused by tendinosis appears to be effective. However, due to the heterogeneity found (partially explained), more studies are needed to define the appropriate dosimetry, specific populations that may benefit more from the technique, and possible adverse events.
