BACKGROUND
Patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) who receive either asleep image-guided subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (DBS) or the traditional awake technique have comparable motor outcomes. However, there are fewer studies regarding which technique should be chosen for globus pallidus internus (GPi) DBS. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the accuracy of lead placement and motor outcomes of asleep versus awake GPi DBS PD population.
METHODS
We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane for studies comparing asleep vs. awake GPi DBS lead placement in patients with PD. Outcomes were spatial accuracy of lead placement, measured by radial error between intended and actual location, motor improvement measured using (UPDRS III), and postoperative stimulation parameters. Statistical analysis was performed with Review Manager 5.1.7. and OpenMeta [Analyst].
RESULTS
Three studies met inclusion criteria with a total of 247 patients. Asleep DBS was used to treat 192 (77.7 %) patients. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 48 months. Radial error was not statistically different between groups (MD -0.49 mm; 95 % CI -1.0 to 0.02; I = 86 %; p = 0.06), with a tendency for higher target accuracy with the asleep technique. There was no significant difference between groups in change on motor function, as measured by UPDRS III, from pre- to postoperative (MD 8.30 %; 95 % CI -4.78 to 21.37; I = 67 %, p = 0.2). There was a significant difference in postoperative stimulation voltage, with the asleep group requiring less voltage than the awake group (MD -0.27 V; 95 % CI -0.46 to - 0.08; I = 0 %; p = 0.006).
CONCLUSION
Our meta-analysis indicates that asleep image-guided GPi DBS presents a statistical tendency suggesting superior target accuracy when compared with the awake standard technique. Differences in change in motor function were not statistically significant between groups.

Neurodegenerative diseases are progressive disorders characterized by synaptic loss and neuronal death. Optogenetics combines optical and genetic methods to control the activity of specific cell types. The efficacy of this approach in neurodegenerative diseases has been investigated in many reviews, however, none of them tackled it systematically. Our study aimed to review systematically the findings of optogenetics and its potential applications in animal models of chronic neurodegenerative diseases and compare it with deep brain stimulation and designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs techniques. The search strategy was performed based on the PRISMA guidelines and the risk of bias was assessed following the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation tool. A total of 247 articles were found, of which 53 were suitable for the qualitative analysis. Our data revealed that optogenetic manipulation of distinct neurons in the brain is efficient in rescuing memory impairment, alleviating neuroinflammation, and reducing plaque pathology in Alzheimer's disease. Similarly, this technique shows an advanced understanding of the contribution of various neurons involved in the basal ganglia pathways with Parkinson's disease motor symptoms and pathology. However, the optogenetic application using animal models of Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was limited. Optogenetics is a promising technique that enhanced our knowledge in the research of neurodegenerative diseases and addressed potential therapeutic solutions for managing these diseases' symptoms and delaying their progression. Nevertheless, advanced investigations should be considered to improve optogenetic tools' efficacy and safety to pave the way for their translatability to the clinic.

BACKGROUND
The risk of preterm birth (PTB) increases when experiencing stress during pregnancy. Chronic stress has been associated with a dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, for which hair cortisol concentration (HCC) is a promising biomarker. However, previous studies on the association between HCC and PTB yielded inconsistent results. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized previous studies on the association between maternal HCC before and during pregnancy and spontaneous PTB.
METHODS
Data was extracted from N = 11 studies with k = 19 effect sizes retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL and citation searching by hand in June 2023 and updated in October 2023. Standardized mean differences were calculated, and a random-effects three-level meta-analysis was conducted. Effect heterogeneity was assessed using Q and I.
RESULTS
HCC during pregnancy was higher among PTB than term groups, but effects were not statistically significant (z = 0.11, 95% CI: - 0.28, 0.51, p = .54) and total heterogeneity was high (Q = 60.01, p < .001, I = 92.30%). After leaving out two possible outlier studies in sensitivity analyses, HCC was lower among preterm compared to term delivering groups, although not statistically significant (z = - 0.06, 95% CI: - 0.20, 0.08, p = .39) but with a substantially reduced total heterogeneity (Q = 16.45, p = .17, I = 42.15%). No moderators affected the estimates significantly, but an effect of trimester and gestational age at delivery is likely.
CONCLUSION
There is currently no evidence of prenatal HCC differences between PTB and term groups as effects were small, imprecise, and not significant. Low statistical power and methodological weaknesses of the small-scale studies challenge possible biological inferences from the small effects, but further research on HCC during pregnancy is highly encouraged.

This systematic review presented a comprehensive survey of studies that applied transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial electrical stimulation to parietal and nonparietal areas to examine the neural basis of symbolic arithmetic processing. All findings were compiled with regard to the three assumptions of the triple-code model (TCM) of number processing. Thirty-seven eligible manuscripts were identified for review (33 with healthy participants and 4 with patients). Their results are broadly consistent with the first assumption of the TCM that intraparietal sulcus both hold a magnitude code and engage in operations requiring numerical manipulations such as subtraction. However, largely heterogeneous results conflicted with the second assumption of the TCM that the left angular gyrus subserves arithmetic fact retrieval, such as the retrieval of rote-learned multiplication results. Support is also limited for the third assumption of the TCM, namely, that the posterior superior parietal lobule engages in spatial operations on the mental number line. Furthermore, results from the stimulation of brain areas outside of those postulated by the TCM show that the bilateral supramarginal gyrus is involved in online calculation and retrieval, the left temporal cortex in retrieval, and the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and cerebellum in online calculation of cognitively demanding arithmetic problems. The overall results indicate that multiple cortical areas subserve arithmetic skills.

OBJECTIVES
We aimed to summarise and critically appraise the available evidence for the effect of age on responsiveness to non-invasive brain stimulation (NBS) paradigms delivered to the primary motor cortex.
METHODS
Four databases (Medline, Embase, PsycINFO and Scopus) were searched from inception to February 7, 2023. Studies investigating age group comparisons and associations between age and neuroplasticity induction from NBS paradigms were included. Only studies delivering neuroplasticity paradigms to the primary motor cortex and responses measured via motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in healthy adults were considered.
RESULTS
39 studies, encompassing 40 experiments and eight NBS paradigms were included: paired associative stimulation (PAS; n = 12), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS; n = 2), intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS; n = 8), continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS; n = 7), transcranial direct and alternating current stimulation ((tDCS; n = 7; tACS; n = 2)), quadripulse stimulation (QPS; n = 1) and i-wave periodic transcranial magnetic stimulation (iTMS; n = 1). Pooled findings from PAS paradigms suggested older adults have reduced post-paradigm responses, although there was considerable heterogeneity. Mixed results were observed across all other NBS paradigms and post-paradigm timepoints.
CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE
Whilst age-dependent reduction in corticospinal excitability is possible, there is extensive inter- and intra-individual variability both within and between studies, making it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions from pooled analyses.

BACKGROUND
This meta-analysis aimed to explore the most robust findings across numerous existing resting-state functional imaging and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies on the functional and structural brain alterations in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHODS
A whole-brain voxel-wise meta-analysis was conducted to compare the differences in the intrinsic functional activity and gray matter volume (GMV) between individuals with ASD and typically developing individuals (TDs) using Seed-based d Mapping software.
RESULTS
A total of 23 functional imaging studies (786 ASD, 710 TDs) and 52 VBM studies (1728 ASD, 1747 TDs) were included. Compared with TDs, individuals with ASD displayed resting-state functional decreases in the left insula (extending to left superior temporal gyrus [STG]), bilateral anterior cingulate cortex/medial prefrontal cortex (ACC/mPFC), left angular gyrus and right inferior temporal gyrus, as well as increases in the right supplementary motor area and precuneus. For VBM meta-analysis, individuals with ASD displayed decreased GMV in the ACC/mPFC and left cerebellum, and increased GMV in the left middle temporal gyrus (extending to the left insula and STG), bilateral olfactory cortex, and right precentral gyrus. Further, individuals with ASD displayed decreased resting-state functional activity and increased GMV in the left insula after overlapping the functional and structural differences.
CONCLUSIONS
The present multimodal meta-analysis demonstrated that ASD exhibited similar alterations in both function and structure of the insula and ACC/mPFC, and functional or structural alterations in the default mode network (DMN), primary motor and sensory regions. These findings contribute to further understanding of the pathophysiology of ASD.

Crohn's disease is an acknowledged "brain-gut" disorder with unclear physiopathology. This study aims to identify potential neuroimaging biomarkers of Crohn's disease. Gray matter volume, cortical thickness, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations, and regional homogeneity were selected as indices of interest and subjected to analyses using both activation likelihood estimation and seed-based d mapping with permutation of subject images. In comparison to healthy controls, Crohn's disease patients in remission exhibited decreased gray matter volume in the medial frontal gyrus and concurrently increased regional homogeneity. Furthermore, gray matter volume reduction in the medial superior frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate/paracingulate gyri, decreased regional homogeneity in the median cingulate/paracingulate gyri, superior frontal gyrus, paracentral lobule, and insula were observed. The gray matter changes of medial frontal gyrus were confirmed through both methods: decreased gray matter volume of medial frontal gyrus and medial superior frontal gyrus were identified by activation likelihood estimation and seed-based d mapping with permutation of subject images, respectively. The meta-regression analyses showed a positive correlation between regional homogeneity alterations and patient age in the supplementary motor area and a negative correlation between gray matter volume changes and patients' anxiety scores in the medial superior frontal gyrus. These anomalies may be associated with clinical manifestations including abdominal pain, psychiatric disorders, and possibly reflective of compensatory mechanisms.

BACKGROUND
Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) could significantly improve olfactory function among patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of ESS on the olfactory bulb volume (OBV) among patients with CRS.
METHODS
A systemic search of PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and other databases was conducted to identify studies assessing OBV changes in patients with CRS after ESS utilizing magnetic resonance imaging.
RESULTS
A total of four studies with 168 participants were included. Comparing the changes in OBV of patients with CRS before and after surgery within 3-6 months, the ESS significantly improved the overall OBV ( = 0.005, I= 66%), with the left OBV increased by 5.57mm ( = 0.84, I= 0%), and the right OBV increased by 8.63mm ( = 0.09, I= 53%). A difference in OBV persists between healthy controls and patients with CRS 3-6 months after ESS. The overall OBV of patients with CRS after ESS was significantly smaller than controls (mean difference = -3.84, = 0.04), with a mean difference of 4.13mm on the left side ( = 0.72, I= 0%), and a mean difference of 3.22mm on the right side ( = 0.0001, I= 89%).
CONCLUSIONS
ESS significantly increases the OBV among patients with CRS.

INTRODUCTION
Pineal region lesions can result in tectal plate compression, hydrocephalus, and associated symptoms including headache, Parinaud's Syndrome, and epileptic phenomena. No studies have looked at the relationship between these lesions and the autonomic nervous system.
METHODS
To evaluate the clinical presentation of pineal lesions secondary to tectal plate compression with a focus on autonomic dysfunction, a systematic review was completed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Case reports and prospective and retrospective studies on patients with pineal or tectal region lesions were included.
RESULTS
Of 73 identified studies, 43 underwent full text screening. 26 studies (n=363 patients; age range 0-69 years) were included. 47.1% of patients were male (n=171). Obstructive hydrocephalus was identified in 119 patients (32.8%). The most common symptom was headache (n=228, 62.8%), followed by epileptic phenomena (n=76, 20.9%). Vision related symptoms were identified in 88 patients (24.2%). 251 patients (69.1%) had symptoms associated with autonomic dysfunction including dizziness, nausea, pupillary dysfunction, photophobia and fatigue. Of the 200 (55%) patients who underwent surgery, 135 patients (67.5%) had improved or resolved symptoms post-operatively, including 120 patients with improved autonomic dysfunction symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS
Though these lesions are most characterized by Parinaud's syndrome and hydrocephalus, this review suggests dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system may be at play and require consideration at initial presentation and treatment.

This systematic review examines the role of dosimetric parameters in predicting temporal lobe necrosis (TLN) risk in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients treated with three-dimensional conformal RT (3D-CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). TLN is a serious late complication that can adversely affect the quality of life of NPC patients. Understanding the relationship between dosimetric parameters and TLN can guide treatment planning and minimize radiation-related complications. A comprehensive search identified relevant studies published up to July 2023. Studies reporting on dosimetric parameters and TLN in NPC patients undergoing 3D-CRT, IMRT, and VMAT were included. TLN incidence, follow-up duration, and correlation with dosimetric parameters of the temporal lobe were analyzed. The review included 30 studies with median follow-up durations ranging from 28 to 110 months. The crude incidence of TLN varied from 2.3 % to 47.3 % and the average crude incidence of TLN is approximately 14 %. Dmax and D1cc emerged as potential predictors of TLN in 3D-CRT and IMRT-treated NPC patients. Threshold values of >72 Gy for Dmax and >62 Gy for D1cc were associated with increased TLN risk. However, other factors should also be considered, including host characteristics, tumor-specific features and therapeutic factors. In conclusion, this systematic review highlights the significance of dosimetric parameters, particularly Dmax and D1cc, in predicting TLN risk in NPC patients undergoing 3D-CRT, IMRT, and VMAT. The findings provide valuable insights that can help in developing optimal treatment planning strategies and contribute to the development of clinical guidelines in this field.
