Malaria is a widespread and prevalent disease that affects human population globally, particularly in tropical countries. Malaria is a major health issue in sub-Saharan Africa and it contributes to morbidity and mortality among individuals in Africa. Pregnant women have been also reported as high risk of people been infected with malaria. This review attempted to evaluate the various methods used for health education programs and the effectiveness of the programs in improving ITNs among pregnant women.Methods The search involved various databases; EBCOHOST, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane library, ScienceDirect, PubMed, SAGE, Sringer link, Web of Science and Wiley Online Library. It was limited to full text research articles that report intervention studies, written in English Language, published between 2003 to 2022. The key words were "malaria", "malaria prevention", "health education", "insecticide-treated nets", "utilization", "pregnant women".Results A total of eleven articles met the inclusion criteria and included in the review. Six studies reported randomized controlled trials (RCTs) while five reported non-randomized controlled trials (NRCT).Conclusions There are evidences from the results which showed that health education programs were improved among pregnant women due to the use of ITNs and LLINS utilization. Furthermore, additional interventions directed at significant others need to be implemented, considering their important role in determining pregnant women's use of ITNs.

Bolivia has one of the highest burdens of Chagas disease in the world. Vertical transmission from mother to infant accounts for a growing number of cases. We performed a systematic review of articles assessing the prevalence of Chagas disease in pregnant women and rates of vertical transmission to infants in Bolivia. Studies were not excluded based on year of publication or language. Random-effects analyses were performed to estimate a pooled prevalence of maternal Chagas disease and pooled vertical transmission rate. Our search yielded 21 articles describing over 400,000 cases of Chagas disease among pregnant women in Bolivia. The reported prevalence of maternal Chagas disease ranged from 17.3% to 64.5%, with a pooled prevalence of 33.0% (95% CI, 27.4-38.7%). The prevalence of maternal Chagas disease trended down over time (P = 0.006), decreasing by approximately 25% to 30% over the last 40 years. Vertical transmission rates ranged from 2.0% to 13% with a pooled average of 6.2% (95% CI, 4.4-7.5%); rates did not significantly change over time. Our study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of Chagas disease maternal prevalence and vertical transmission in Bolivia. Our findings indicate that maternal Chagas disease has fallen in prevalence but still affects 20% to 30% of pregnant women and poses a considerable risk of vertical transmission. Pregnant women and infants are an important target for public health interventions to limit the mortality and morbidity of Chagas disease and to reduce intergenerational spread.

BACKGROUND
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), or kala-azar, is a vector-borne tropical disease caused by a group of intracellular hemoflagellate protozoa belonging to the family of Trypanosomatide and the genus Leishmania. The disease is distributed around the world and transmitted via the bite of infected female Phlebotomine sandflies, and there is variation in the diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled global sensitivity and specificity of the rk-39 test and to evaluate if there is a difference between the different parts of the world.
METHODS
A systematic review and meta-analysis have been conducted on the diagnostic accuracy of dermoscopy. After setting eligibility criteria, literature was searched in four databases and one searching engine. Articles were screened, critically appraised, and extracted independently by two reviewers, and any disagreements were resolved with the involvement of a third person. The quality of the included studies had been assessed by the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS 2) tool. Pooled sensitivity and specificity were determined by bivariate random effect analysis. Heterogeneity was assessed by Higgins's I2, and when it was present, mitigation was conducted by using sensitivity analysis.
RESULT
A total of 409 studies were identified, and finally 18 articles were eligible for the review with a total sample size of 5, 253. The bivariate random effect meta-analysis of the 7 diagnostic accuracy studies showed a pooled sensitivity of 0.89 (0.76-0.95) and specificity of 0.86 (0.72-0.94). The +LR was 6.32 (95% CI: 2.85-14.02), the-LR was 0.13 (95% CI: 0.06-0.30), and the diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) was 47.8 (95% CI: 11.3-203.2). Abdel-Latif (2018) was both an outlier and influential for sensitivity, and Walter (2011) was both an outlier and influential for specificity, and removing them from sensitivity and specificity, respectively, was beneficial for reducing the heterogeneity.
CONCLUSION
Rk-39 is found to have highly accurate measures in the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. Both sensitivity and specificity were found to be highly accurate in the diagnosis of leishmaniasis, with a pooled sensitivity of 0.91 (0.88-0.93) and a pooled specificity of 0.89 (0.85-0.91).
ETHICAL CONSIDERATION
As we will use secondary data for the systematic review and meta-analysis, ethical concerns are not necessary.

BACKGROUND
The study of parasites provides insight into intricate ecological relationships in ecosystem dynamics, food web structures, and evolution on multiple scales. Hepatozoon Eucoccidiorida: Hepatozoidae) is a genus of protozoan hemoparasites with heteroxenous life cycles that switch infections between vertebrates and blood-feeding invertebrates. The most comprehensive review of the genus was published 26 years ago, and currently there are no harmonized data on the epizootiology, diagnostics, genotyping methods, evolutionary relationships, and genetic diversity of Hepatozoon in the Americas.
METHODS
Here, we provide a comprehensive review based on the PRISMA method regarding Hepatozoon in wild mammals within the American continent, in order to generate a framework for future research.
RESULTS
11 out of the 35 countries of the Americas (31.4%) had data on Hepatozoon, with Carnivora and Rodentia orders having the most characterizations. Bats, ungulates, and shrews were the least affected groups. While Hepatozoon americanum, H. americanum-like, H. canis, H. didelphydis, H. felis, H. milleri, H. griseisciuri, and H. procyonis correspond to the identified species, a plethora of genospecies is pending for a formal description combining morphology and genetics. Most of the vectors of Hepatozoon in the Americas are unknown, but some flea, mite, and tick species have been confirmed. The detection of Hepatozoon has relied mostly on conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the implementation of specific real time PCR for the genus needs to be employed to improve its diagnosis in wild animals in the future. From a genetic perspective, the V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene has been widely sequenced for the identification of Hepatozoon in wild animals. However, mitochondrial and apicoplast markers should also be targeted to truly determine different species in the genus. A phylogenetic analysis of herein retrieved 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences showed two main clades of Hepatozoon: Clade I associated with small mammals, birds, and herpetozoa, and Clade II associated with Carnivora. The topology of the tree is also reflected in the haplotype network.
CONCLUSIONS
Finally, our review emphasizes Hepatozoon as a potential disease agent in threatened wild mammals and the role of wild canids as spreaders of Hepatozoon infections in the Americas.

Malaria, caused by different species of protists of the genus Plasmodium, remains among the most common causes of death due to parasitic diseases worldwide, mainly for children aged under 5. One of the main obstacles to malaria eradication is the speed with which the pathogen evolves resistance to the drug schemes developed against it. For this reason, it remains urgent to find innovative therapeutic strategies offering sufficient specificity against the parasite to minimize resistance evolution and drug side effects. In this context, nanotechnology-based approaches are now being explored for their use as antimalarial drug delivery platforms due to the wide range of advantages and tuneable properties that they offer. However, major challenges remain to be addressed to provide a cost-efficient and targeted therapeutic strategy contributing to malaria eradication. The present work contains a systematic review of nanotechnology-based antimalarial drug delivery systems generated during the last 10 years. BACKGROUND
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (LC) is an infectious vector-borne disease caused by parasites belonging to the genus Leishmania. Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been investigated as alternatives for the treatment of LC owing to their small size and high surface area. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effect of MNPs in the treatment of LC through experimental, in vitro and in vivo investigations.
METHODS
The databases used were MEDLINE/ PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Science Direct. Manual searches of the reference lists of the included studies and grey literature were also performed. English language and experimental in vitro and in vivo studies using different Leishmania species, both related to MNP treatment, were included. This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021248245).
RESULTS
A total of 93 articles were included. Silver nanoparticles are the most studied MNPs, and L. tropica is the most studied species. Among the mechanisms of action of MNPs in vitro, we highlight the production of reactive oxygen species, direct contact of MNPs with the biomolecules of the parasite, and release of metal ions.
CONCLUSION
MNPs may be considered a promising alternative for the treatment of LC, but further studies are needed to define their efficacy and safety.

Reports indicate that Plasmodium infections influence methemoglobin levels. However, findings have been inconclusive or have varied across different geographic and demographic contexts. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to consolidate existing data regarding the association between Plasmodium infections and alterations in methemoglobin levels related to the severity of the infection. A comprehensive literature search of several databases, including Ovid, ProQuest, Embase, Scopus, MEDLINE, and PubMed, was conducted to identify relevant studies that examined methemoglobin levels in patients with malaria. Qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis of the pooled standardized mean difference were conducted to synthesize the differences in methemoglobin levels between: (1) patients with malaria and those without malaria and (2) patients with severe malaria and those with uncomplicated malaria based on various themes including publication year, study design, study area, Plasmodium species, age group, symptomatic status, severity status, and method of malaria detection. Of the 1846 studies that were initially identified from the main databases and additional searches on Google Scholar, 10 studies met the eligibility criteria and were selected for this review. The systematic review distinctly highlighted an association between malaria and elevated methemoglobin levels, an observation consistent across diverse geographical regions and various Plasmodium species. Furthermore, the meta-analysis confirmed this by demonstrating increased methemoglobin levels in patients with malaria compared to those without malaria (P < 0.001, Hedges' g 2.32, 95% CI 1.36-3.29, I 97.27, 8 studies). Moreover, the meta-analysis found elevated methemoglobin levels in patients with severe malaria compared to those with uncomplicated malaria (P < 0.001, Hedges' g 2.20, 95% CI 0.82-3.58, I 96.20, 5 studies). This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed increased methemoglobin levels in patients with P. falciparum and P. vivax infections, with a notable association between elevated methemoglobin levels and severe malaria. Future research should focus on elucidating the specific mechanisms by which changes in methemoglobin levels are related to infections by P. falciparum and P. vivax, particularly in terms of severity, and how these alterations could potentially impact patient management and treatment outcomes.

Protective efficacy and safety of radiation-attenuated and chemo-attenuated Plasmodium Falciparum sporozoite vaccines against controlled and natural malaria infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
Despite the significant burden of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria and the licensure of two vaccines for use in infants and young children that are partially effective in preventing clinical malaria caused by Pf, a highly effective vaccine against Pf infection is still lacking. Live attenuated vaccines using Pf sporozoites as the immunogen (PfSPZ Vaccines) hold promise for addressing this gap. Here we review the safety and efficacy of two of the most promising PfSPZ approaches: PfSPZ Vaccine (radiation attenuated PfSPZ) and PfSPZ-CVac (chemo-attenuated PfSPZ).
METHODS
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis by searching PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, CENTRAL, and WOS until 22nd December 2021. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of these two vaccine approaches that measured protection against parasitaemia following controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) in malaria-naive and malaria-exposed adults or following exposure to naturally transmitted Pf malaria in African adults and children (primary outcome) and that also measured the incidence of solicited and unsolicited adverse events as indicators of safety and tolerability after vaccination (secondary outcome). We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that measured the detected parasitaemia after vaccination (primary outcome) and the incidence of various solicited and unsolicited adverse events (secondary outcome). The quality of the included RCTs using the Cochrane ROB 1 tool and the quality of evidence using the GRADE system were evaluated. We pooled dichotomous data using the risk ratio (RR) for development of parasitemia in vaccinees relative to controls as a measure of vaccine efficacy (VE), including the corresponding confidence interval (CI). This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022308057).
RESULTS
We included 19 RCTs. Pooled RR favoured PfSPZ Vaccine (RR: 0.65 with 95% CI [0.53, 0.79], P = 0.0001) and PfSPZ-table (RR: 0.42 with 95% CI [0.27, 0.67], P = 0.0002) for preventing parasitaemia, relative to normal saline placebo. Pooled RR showed no difference between PfSPZ Vaccine and the control in the occurrence of any solicited adverse event (RR: 1.00 with 95% CI [0.82, 1.23], P = 0.98), any local solicited adverse events (RR: 0.73 with 95% CI [0.49, 1.08], P = 0.11), any systemic solicited adverse events (RR: 0.94 with 95% CI [0.75, 1.17], P = 0.58), and any unsolicited adverse event (RR: 0.93 with 95% CI [0.78, 1.10], P = 0.37).
CONCLUSION
PfSPZ and PfSPZ-CVacs showed comparable efficacy. Therefore, they can introduce a promising strategy for malaria prophylaxis, but more large-scale field trials are required to sustain efficacy and yield clinically applicable findings.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease with a worldwide prevalence that is caused by Toxoplasma gondii. This study aimed to summarize available data on genotyping T. gondii strains based on the GRA6 gene marker in different hosts around the world. We conducted a comprehensive literature search using five international databases (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) from inception until December 2021. We identified 32 papers eligible for inclusion in this systematic review. The majority of studies (50%) were carried out in Iran (n = 16) to identify T. gondii genotypes based on the GRA6 gene. Other countries with reported studies include China, Japan, Sweden, and Italy (n = 2 each). Out of 3,434 samples collected from various hosts, most studies (n = 11) focused on human samples (34.4%), followed by ovine (n = 7), pig (n = 4), goat (n = 3) and soil and cattle (n = 2).Using various molecular methods such as conventional PCR, nested-PCR, real-time PCR, microsatellite analysis, and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), we found DNA positive results in 805 out of 3,434 samples. Of these, 285 (35.40%), 207 (25.71%), 182 (22.60%), 65 (8.07%), and 18 (2.23%) were infected with types I, II, III, mix I, II, III, and mix II, III, respectively. Our data demonstrate that the GRA6 gene marker has sufficient polymorphism to detect three types of T. gondii genotypes in various hosts. Identifying the specific genotype could be valuable in developing new strategies for treatment, vaccination, diagnosis, control, and prevention of T. gondii infection.

OBJECTIVE
This study aimed to illustrate the effect of malaria infection on red blood cell parameters in children and evaluate the diagnostic relevance of haematological parameters in predicting malaria.
METHODS
The studies were identified through databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus to retrieve related articles. Fourteen studies were selected by literature search based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a meta-analysis on different red blood cell parameters was performed.
RESULTS
Haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, and RBC count show statistically significant findings with p values of (<0.00001), (p<0.00001) and (p=0.0004), respectively. Other parameters like MCV, MCH, and MCHC show statistically non-significant results with p values of 0.21, 0.36, and 0.63, respectively.
CONCLUSION
Considering the above findings, the combination of haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, and RBC counts could be used as reliable parameters to predict the presence of infection and included in the diagnostic strategy for malaria in children.
