PURPOSE
The success of corneal collagen cross-linking in altering keratoconus' clinical course has driven a search for further uses of this procedure. This literature review aims to analyze the scientific evidence available for the benefit of cross-linking in the management of ophthalmic diseases other than progressive keratoconus or ectasia induced by corneal refractive procedures.
METHODS
A systemic literature review.
RESULTS
We reviewed 97 studies. We found that collagen cross-linking can limit the progression of several other corneal ectasias, thus reducing and limiting the need for keratoplasty. Collagen cross-linking also can reduce the refractive power of the cornea and can be considered for a moderate degree of bacterial keratitis or when the organism is unidentified, which is refractive to antibiotics alone. However, the comparative rarity of these procedures has limited the extent of evidence. In fungal, Acanthamoeba, and herpes virus keratitis, the evidence is inconclusive of the safety and efficacy of cross-linking.
CONCLUSION
Current clinical data is limited, and laboratory data has not fully correlated with published clinical data.

BACKGROUND
Increasingly, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is becoming an inevitable consequence of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. As the disease progresses, and through dialysis, the need for and loss of water-soluble vitamins both increase. This review article looks at the benefits and possible risks of supplementing these vitamins with the treatment of CKD.
METHODS
Data in the PubMed and Embase databases were analyzed. The keywords "chronic kidney disease", in various combinations, are associated with thiamin, riboflavin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, folates, niacin, cobalamin, and vitamin C. This review focuses on the possible use of water-soluble vitamin supplementation to improve pharmacological responses and the overall clinical condition of patients.
RESULTS
The mechanism of supportive supplementation is based on reducing oxidative stress, covering the increased demand and losses resulting from the treatment method. In the initial period of failure (G2-G3a), it does not require intervention, but later, especially in the case of inadequate nutrition, the inclusion of supplementation with folate and cobalamin may bring benefits. Such supplementation seems to be a necessity in patients with stage G4 or G5 (uremia). Conversely, the inclusion of additional B6 supplementation to reduce CV risk may be considered. At stage 3b and beyond (stages 4-5), the inclusion of niacin at a dose of 400-1000 mg, depending on the patient's tolerance, is required to lower the phosphate level. The inclusion of supplementation with thiamine and other water-soluble vitamins, especially in peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis patients, is necessary for reducing dialysis losses. Allowing hemodialysis patients to take low doses of oral vitamin C effectively reduces erythropoietin dose requirements and improves anemia in functional iron-deficient patients. However, it should be considered that doses of B vitamins that are several times higher than the recommended dietary allowance of consumption may exacerbate left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in CKD patients.
CONCLUSIONS
Taking into account the research conducted so far, it seems that the use of vitamin supplementation in CKD patients may have a positive impact on the treatment process and maintaining a disease-free condition.

The aim of this study was to evaluate published data regarding riboflavin (RF) as a cross-linker for improved adhesive bond strength to dentin and to analyze previous studies for optimal concentration of riboflavin range suitable for dentin bond. Saliva and distilled water were used as storage media and aging time was 24 h and 6 months. Results of meta-analysis were synthesized using a statistical method of inverse variance in random effects with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI). Cochrane review manager 5.4.1 was used to determine results of the meta-analysis. In total, 3172 articles were found from search databases "PubMed", "Scopus", and "Google Scholar". Six of the fifteen studies were eligible for meta-analysis. Micro tensile strength shows significant improvement with the addition of riboflavin ( < 0.05) compared to without the addition of riboflavin from with 95% CI. A significant difference has been found in micro tensile bond strength between use of the riboflavin cross-linker and without use of the riboflavin crosslinker in the dentin adhesive system. With a 95% confidence interval (CI), the I for micro tensile strength was 89% with strong heterogeneity, Chi = 44.76, df = 5 ( < 0.00001), and overall effect size is Z = 2.22 ( = 0.03) after immediate aging. Chiang et al. 2013 shows maximum mean differences which is 38.50 [17.93-59.07]. After 6 months of aging in distilled water or artificial saliva micro tensile bond strength has been increased with the addition of riboflavin ( < 0.05). It can be clearly seen that pooled effect and 95% CI did not cross the line of no effect. With a 95% confidence interval (CI), the I for micro tensile strength was 96% with strong heterogeneity, Chi = 117.56, df = 5 ( < 0.00001), and overall effect size is Z = 2.30 ( = 0.02). Subgroup analysis proved a similar effect of distilled water and artificial saliva as storage media on micro tensile bond strength after incorporating riboflavin as a collagen crosslinker. An artificial saliva aged forest plot also showed considerable heterogeneity with I = 96%; Tau = 257.32; Chi = 94.37; df = 2 ( < 0.00001); test for overall effect, Z = 1.06 ( = 0.29). Riboflavin prior to or with bonding is recommended to improve the bonding of different adhesive systems.

OBJECTIVE
Arboviruses are emerging as a relevant threat to transfusion safety. Pathogen inactivation methods (PIMs) may reduce the risk of transmission through transfusion, as long as they meet minimum standards for effectiveness. This study aims to assess the log reduction of viral load achieved with different PIMs, according to the blood product they are used on and the arbovirus targeted.
METHODS
Systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Searches were conducted in MEDLINE and Embase. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO CRD42022312061. We selected records reporting the log reduction of viral load achieved with the main PIMs (amotosalen + UVA light [INTERCEPT], riboflavin + UV light [Mirasol], methylene blue + visible light/UVC light [THERAFLEX], solvent detergent, amustaline [INTERCEPT] and PEN110 [Inactine]), applied to any blood product (plasma, platelets, red blood cells or whole blood) and for any arbovirus. The log reduction of viral loads was assessed by obtaining the mean log reduction factor (LRF). We compared and classified the LRF of different techniques using statistical methods.
RESULTS
We included 59 publications reporting LRF results in 17 arboviruses. For 13 arboviruses, including Chikungunya virus, Dengue virus, West Nile virus and Zika virus, at least one of the methods achieves adequate or optimal log reduction of viral load-mean LRF ≥4. The LRF achieved with riboflavin + UV light is inferior to the rest of the techniques, both overall and specifically for plasma, platelets preserved in platelet additive solution (PAS)/plasma, and red blood cells/whole blood. The LRF achieved using Mirasol is also lower for inactivating Chikungunya virus, Dengue virus and Zika virus. For West Nile virus, we found no significant differences. In plasma, the method that achieves the highest LRF is solvent/detergent; in platelets, THERAFLEX and INTERCEPT; and in red blood cells/whole blood, PEN110 (Inactine).
CONCLUSION
Not all PIMs achieve the same LRF, nor is this equivalent between the different arboviruses or blood products. Overall, the LRFs achieved using riboflavin + UV light (Mirasol) are inferior to those achieved with the rest of the PIMs. Regarding the others, LRFs vary by arbovirus and blood product. In light of the threat of different arboviruses, blood establishments should have already validated PIMs and be logistically prepared to implement these techniques quickly.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. The evidence connecting dietary intake and DR is emerging, but uncertain. We conducted a systematic review to comprehensively summarize the current understanding of the associations between dietary consumption, DR and diabetic macular edema (DME). We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Medline, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials between January 1967 to May 2022 for all studies investigating the effect of diet on DR and DME. Of the 4962 articles initially identified, 54 relevant articles were retained. Our review found that higher intakes of fruits, vegetables, dietary fibers, fish, a Mediterranean diet, oleic acid, and tea were found to have a protective effect against DR. Conversely, high intakes of diet soda, caloric intake, rice, and choline were associated with a higher risk of DR. No association was seen between vitamin C, riboflavin, vitamin D, and milk and DR. Only one study in our review assessed dietary intake and DME and found a risk of high sodium intake for DME progression. Therefore, the general recommendation for nutritional counseling to manage diabetes may be beneficial to prevent DR risk, but prospective studies in diverse diabetic populations are needed to confirm our findings and expand clinical guidelines for DR management.

Impact of Dentine Pretreatment with Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibitors on Bond Strength of Coronal Composite Restorations: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of In Vitro Studies.
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes participate in collagen matrix degradation, including in dentine, potentially compromising bond strength. Therefore, MMP inhibitors have been hypothesized to improve restoration bond strength and stability. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the influence of different MMP inhibitors applied as dentine surface pretreatments on the immediate (24 hours) and longer term (months) bond strength of direct coronal composite restorations. This systematic literature review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. A systematic literature search of three databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and Google Scholar) was conducted independently by two reviewers from inception to April 2022. An adapted quality assessment tool was independently applied by two reviewers for risk of bias assessment. RevMan v5.4 software was used for meta-analyses. A randomeffectsmodel was used to generatemean differences with 95% confidence intervals for treatment and control comparisons. The Q-test and I2-test were used to test for heterogeneity. The proportion of total variance across studies attributable to heterogeneity rather than chance was calculated. Overall effects were tested using the Z-test, while subgroup differences were tested using Chi-squared tests. Of 934 studies, 64 studies were included in the systematic review and 42 in the meta-analysis. Thirty-one MMP inhibitors were reported, three of which were included in the meta-analysis: 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), 0.3M carbodiimide (EDC), and 0.1% riboflavin (RIBO). Pretreatment with 2% CHX for 30 and 60 seconds did not significantly improve bond strength compared with controls either immediately or after long-termageing. However, pretreatment with 0.3MEDC and 0.1% RIBO (but not CHX) significantly improved bond strength compared with control groups both immediately and over time. Most studies showed a medium risk of bias. These in vitro findings pave the way for rationale clinical trialing of dentine surface pretreatment with MMP inhibitors to improve clinical outcomes.

This review aimed to summarize the up-to-date evidence on non-genetic factors for the development of never smoking lung cancer (NSLC) and to explore reasons behind the conflicting results. Relevant literature was searched in three electronic databases (PubMed, Embase and Web of Science) from 1 January 2000-31 July 2022. Cohort studies that investigated non-genetic risk factors for primary lung cancer in never smokers were included. The effect of non-genetic factors about NSLC were summarized with pooled relative risk (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) through meta-analysis or narrative description when unexplained statistical heterogeneity was observed. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to appraise the methodological quality of included studies. Sixty cohort studies were included, covering population from Asia, Europe and America. Most included studies (42, 70.0 %) were of high methodological quality. Over 50 years old (RR = 5.26), environmental tobacco smoke (Pooled RR = 1.30), Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (RR = 2.67), family history of lung cancer (Pooled RR = 1.83) and higher level of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (RR = 1.73) increased the risk of NSLC. Dairy foods consumption (RR = 0.79), isoflavone intake (Pooled RR = 0.65), and riboflavin intake (RR = 0.62) decreased the risk among female population. Inconsistency or unclear definition for never smokers and risk factors could be observed in included studies. Most life behavior factors associated with NSLC can be modified through lifestyle changes. Future cohort studies are suggested to adopt a clearer definition on never smokers and exposure, conducting subgroup analysis when evidence indicating there is heterogeneity between genders, and explore dose-response relationship between the identified factors and NSLC.

PURPOSE
The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of 18 mW/cm 2 (5 minutes) versus 9 mW/cm 2 (10 minutes) accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking protocols in patients with progressive keratoconus.
METHODS
A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines, and electronic information was searched to identify studies comparing the outcomes of 5- versus 10-minute protocols in patients with progressive keratoconus. Mean changes in uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity, cylinder (diopters), thinnest corneal thickness, corneal keratometry values (K1 and K2), corneal high-order aberration (HOA), spherical aberration, coma, and trefoil were the primary outcome measures. Secondary outcome measures included the mean change in central corneal thickness and postoperative complications. Random effects modeling was used for the analysis.
RESULTS
Four studies that enrolled 329 eyes were included. The 10-minute protocol had significantly improved outcomes compared with the 5-minute protocol for the mean changes in K1 and K2 ( P < 0.00001), corneal total HOA ( P = 0.0002), and corneal coma ( P = 0.00001). However, no statistically significant differences were found between the 2 protocols in uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity, cylinder, thinnest corneal thickness, spherical aberration, or trefoil. The 5-minute protocol was associated with a significantly lower mean change in the central corneal thickness for secondary outcomes. In addition, no significant differences were found between the 2 protocols for postoperative complications.
CONCLUSIONS
The 10-minute protocol had better K1, K2, and HOA outcomes than the 5-minute protocol, but no statistically significant differences in the other outcomes.

PURPOSE
Keratoconus is a disorder that results in visual loss from increased corneal high-order aberrations and irregular astigmatism and reduces quality of life. The primary treatment for progressive keratoconus is crosslinking (CXL). Recently, it has been suggested that oxygen enhances the type II photodynamic reaction of CXL that is oxygen dependent. Our study investigated the effect of increased oxygen availability in epithelium-on CXL on visual acuity and corneal curvature.
METHODS
We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus databases on November 3, 2021. We included studies that reported increased oxygen availability during CXL in patients with keratoconus published within the last 10 years. A meta-analysis on the primary outcomes, maximum keratometry, and corrected distance visual acuity, was conducted.
RESULTS
The search yielded 108 publications which were screened and assessed for eligibility. Six studies were included in the systematic review and 5 studies were included in our meta-analysis of the outcomes of increased oxygen availability in accelerated CXL. The meta-analysis on data after 6 months of follow-up found a significant decrease in mean maximum keratometry of 1.2 diopter (95% confidence interval: 0.2-2.3; P =0.02) and an improvement in mean corrected distance visual acuity by 0.08 logMAR (95% confidence interval, 0.02-0.13; P =0.01). There were no serious adverse events reported.
CONCLUSIONS
Increasing oxygen during epithelium-on CXL improved visual acuity and produced corneal flattening without any serious adverse events in patients with keratoconus. The demarcation line depth was significantly higher with oxygen compared to the control group. Further data are required with a control group and long-term follow-up across a range of CXL protocols for implementation into standard clinical practice.

Mining the multifunction of mucosal-associated invariant T cells in hematological malignancies and transplantation immunity: A promising hexagon soldier in immunomodulatory.
Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are evolutionarily conserved innate-like T cells capable of recognizing bacterial and fungal ligands derived from vitamin B biosynthesis. Under different stimulation conditions, MAIT cells can display different immune effector phenotypes, exerting immune regulation and anti-/protumor responses. Based on basic biological characteristics, including the enrichment of mucosal tissue, the secretion of mucosal repair protective factors (interleukin-17, ), and the activation of riboflavin metabolites by intestinal flora, MAIT cells may play an important role in the immune regulation effect of mucosal lesions or inflammation. At the same time, activated MAIT cells secrete granzyme B, perforin, interferon γ, and other toxic cytokines, which can mediate anti-tumor effects. In addition, since a variety of hematological malignancies express the targets of MAIT cell-specific effector molecules, MAIT cells are also a potentially attractive target for cell therapy or immunotherapy for hematological malignancies. In this review, we will provide an overview of MAIT research related to blood system diseases and discuss the possible immunomodulatory or anti-tumor roles that unique biological characteristics or effector phenotypes may play in hematological diseases.
