BACKGROUND
While many studies have examined relationships of neuroimaging variables to cognitive measures in multiple sclerosis (MS), longitudinal studies are lacking. The relationship of cognitive changes to neuroradiological changes in MS is thus incompletely understood. The present study systematically reviews all studies reporting a relationship between MRI changes and cognitive changes after at least one year of follow-up.
METHOD
An extensive and methodical search of online databases was conducted to identify qualified studies until August 2023. Among various cognitive tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures, Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT), verbal fluency, T2 lesion volume (T2LV), white matter lesion volume (WML), and grey matter volume (GMV) qualified for inclusion in a meta-analysis investigating the association of cognitive changes to neuroradiological changes.
RESULTS
We identified 35 studies that explored the link between MRI changes and changes in cognitive outcomes. Of these, twenty studies (57.14%) investigated the association between SDMT/PASAT and MRI metrics. Eleven studies (31.42%) focused on the relationship between MRI metrics and verbal learning and memory, while ten studies (28.57%) reported associations with visuospatial learning and memory. Furthermore, eight studies (22.85%) analyzed the correlation between verbal fluency and MRI measures. Only 5 were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis evaluated correlations between SDMT/PASAT and GMV (r = 0.67, 95% CI 0.44-0.91), and verbal fluency and T2LV (r = 0.35, 95% CI 0.09-0.60).
CONCLUSION
In this rigorously conducted systematic review, we found a significant association of cognitive changes, specifically SDMT/PASAT and verbal fluency, to changes in T2LV and atrophy in individuals with MS. Findings should be interpreted cautiously due to the limited amount of high-quality research, small sample sizes, and variability in study methodologies.

BACKGROUND
Several studies have shown the different relationships between cognitive functions and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). However, there is an ongoing debate regarding the magnitude of correlation between MRI measurements and specific cognitive function tests. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the most consistent correlations between MRI measurements and cognitive function in pwMS.
METHODS
PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched up to February 2023, to find relevant data. The search utilized syntax and medical subject headings (MeSH) relevant to cognitive performance tests and MRI measurements in pwMS. The R software version 4.3.3 with random effect models was used to estimate the pooled effect sizes.
RESULTS
13,559 studies were reviewed, of which 136 were included. The meta-analyses showed that thalamic volume had the most significant correlations with Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) r = 0.47 (95 % CI: 0.39 to 0.56, p < 0.001, I = 88 %), Brief Visual Memory Test-Revised-Total Recall (BVMT-TR) r = 0.51 (95 % CI: 0.36 to 0.66, p < 0.001, I = 81 %), California Verbal Learning Test-II-Total Recall (CVLT-TR) r = 0.47 (95 % CI: 0.34 to 0.59, p < 0.001, I = 69 %,), and Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (DKEFS) r = 0.48 (95 % CI: 0.34 to 0.63, p < 0.001, I = 22 %,).
CONCLUSION
We conclude that thalamic volume exhibits highest relationships with information processing speed (IPS), visuospatial learning-memory, verbal learning-memory, and executive function in pwMS. A comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of the mechanisms underpinning this association requires additional research.

Children can acquire fears of novel stimuli as a result of listening to parental verbal threat information about these stimuli (i.e., instructional learning). While empirical studies have shown that learning via parental information occurs, the effect size of parental verbal threat information on child fear of a novel stimulus has not yet been measured in a meta-analysis. We conducted a systematic review and meta analysis to assess the effect of parents' verbal statements on their children's fear acquisition. Additionally, we explored potential moderators of this effect, namely, parent and child anxiety levels, as well as child age. WebOfScience, Pubmed, Medline, and PsycINFO were used to identify eligible studies that assessed children's (30 months to 18 years old) fear of novel stimuli after being exposed to parental verbal threat information. We selected 17 studies for the meta-analysis and 18 for the systematic review. The meta-analysis revealed a significant causal effect of parental verbal threat information on children's fear reaction towards novel stimuli [g = 1.26]. No evidence was found for a moderation of verbal learning effects, neither by child or parent anxiety levels nor by child age. The effect of parents' verbal threat information on children's fear of novel stimuli is large and not dependent on anxiety levels or child age.

Memory deficits are observed across psychiatric disorders ranging from the prodrome of psychosis to common mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and dissociative disorders. Memory deficits among patients recovering from psychiatric disorders could be directly related to the primary illness or secondary to the adverse effect of a treatment such as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). The trouble in the meaningful integration of working-memory and episodic memory is the most commonly affected domain that requires routine assessments. An update on the recent trends of methods of assessment of memory deficits is the first step towards understanding and correcting these deficits to target optimum recovery. A systematic literature search was conducted from October 2018 to October 2022 to review the recent methods of assessment of memory deficits in psychiatric disorders. The definition of 'Memory deficit' was operationalized as 'selective processes of memory, commonly required for activities of daily living, and affected among psychiatric disorders resulting in subjective distress and dysfunction'. We included 110 studies, most of them being conducted in western countries on patients with schizophrenia. Other disorders included dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia, Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery, California Verbal Learning Test, Trail Making Test Part A and B, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Wechsler Memory Scale, Wechsler Adults Intelligence Scale-IV were the most common neuropsychological assessments used. Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment were the most common bedside assessment tools used while Squire Subjective Memory Questionnaire was commonly used to measure ECT-related memory deficits. The review highlights the recent developments in the field of assessment of memory deficits in psychiatric disorders. Findings recommend and emphasize routine assessment of memory deficits among psychiatric disorders in developing countries especially severe mental illnesses. It remains interesting to see the role of standardized assessments in diagnostic systems given more than a decade of research on memory deficits in psychiatric disorders.

Learning to read and write are essential academic skills that children develop during their early years of primary school. These skills are supported by various predictive indices that emerge in early childhood. This review has three main goals: to identify which factors are closely examined as predictors for reading and writing, specifically decoding and encoding skills, in different populations and languages (Objective 1); to assess the longitudinal relationship between these predictors and reading and writing skills (Objective 2), considering difficulties or disorders in these areas (Objective 3), during school-age. Using the PRISMA methodology, 81 articles were reviewed. As a first result, there is a significant difference in the number of studies investigating the relationship between predictors and reading ( = 75) compared to writing ( = 18). The most extensively studied predictors for both skills are phonological awareness, language skills, executive functions, rapid automatized naming, and non-verbal cognitive skills. English is the most studied language. Results indicated variability in the relationship between predictors and reading/writing, possibly due to differences in the analyzed populations, chosen outcome measures, and statistical analyses. Additionally, few studies explored the long-term connection between predictors and learning difficulties. In summary, recognizing the multifaceted nature of predictive factors for reading and writing is crucial, and early screening is important for tailored preventive interventions in case of early deficiencies. Future research should delve into writing, conduct cross-cultural studies with diverse languages, and explore the role of predictive factors in understanding reading and writing difficulties or disorders.

BACKGROUND
Working memory (WM) is one of the most influential cognitive functions in encoding, registering, and retrieving information. It influences the learning process in children. Its role becomes essential, especially in a child with a learning disability (LD). Researchers worldwide are giving much prominence to WM, especially in devising cognitive retraining strategies for better cognitive functioning and academic attainment in these children. This current study aims to explore globally used instruments to measure this construct and review effective WM training models in the cognitive rehabilitation of children with LD. This study used a systematic review, availing the elaborate "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA)" guidelines.
SUMMARY
The databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, and Web of Science were searched thoroughly, and those studies, which met the inclusion criteria, were considered for this review. Out of 770 studies found with keywords, only six met the inclusion criteria and were selected for a detailed analysis. The outcome of the current review provides trustworthy evidence of poor performance, especially in tasks involving verbal and executive WM in children with all types of learning disabilities (LD) and difficulties. The studies reviewed support the hypothesis that WM can improve with training and significantly improve children's academic attainment.
KEY MESSAGE
Further this review recommends that research and efforts must go into devising these cognitive training techniques. Children have high cerebral plasticity; hence, using cognitive training (emphasizing WM training and other cognitive functions) with them would enhance their cognitive functioning and capacity, improving their academic performance.

BACKGROUND
Cognitive impairment is highly prevalent in multiple sclerosis (MS) with poorly understood underlying mechanisms. Lipids are considered to be associated with MS progression through the inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways, brain atrophy, cellular signaling, and tissue physiology. In addition, serum lipids are proposed as a modifiable factor affecting the neuropsychiatric condition; therefore, this study aims to assess the association between serum lipid levels and cognitive outcomes in MS.
METHODS
This study was carried out following the PRISMA 2020 statement. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase in March 2023, and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)'s critical appraisal tools were utilized for risk of bias (RoB) assessments in the included studies. The quantitative synthesis was performed with the comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA3) software.
RESULTS
Out of 508 screened records, 7 studies were eventually found to meet our inclusion criteria. In two studies, the course of MS in the sample of the study was only Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS), whereas the other five studies' sample was a combination of different phenotypes. Studies utilized different scales such as Minimal Assessment of Cognitive Function in MS (MACFIMS), Brief International Cognitive Assessment for MS (BICAMS), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests (BRB-N) for cognitive evaluations. Dealing with possible confounders such as age, disease duration and level of disability was the most common possible source of bias in the included studies. One study revealed an inverse relationship between serum levels of apolipoproteins (including ApoA-I, ApoB, and ApoB/ApoA-I) and Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) scores. Also, a correlation between 24S-hydroxycholesterol (24OHC) serum concentrations and SDMT score was reported in one study. The association between serum total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and different aspects of cognitive function was reported in the studies; however, serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) were not found to be associated. The quantitative synthesis revealed a significant correlation between TC and the MoCA scores (r =-0.238; 95 %CI: -0.366 to -0.100; p-value = 0.001); however, the correlation between TG levels and MoCA were not statistically significant (r:-0.070; 95 %CI: -0.209 to 0.072; p-value: 0.334). In addition, the mata-analyses were not associated with significant findings regarding the correlation between lipid profiles (including HDL, LDL, TG, and TC) and other cognitive assessment scales including SDMT, Brief Visuospatial Memory Test (BVMT), and California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) (p-values>0.05).
DISCUSSION
Available evidence suggested a link between TC and LDL with cognitive outcomes of MS patients which was not evident in our quantitative synthesis. The limited number of studies, high RoB, different cognitive assessment scales and reporting methods, and the cross-sectional design of the included studies, were the main limitations that alleviate the clinical significance of the findings of this study and suggested further investigations on this topic.

OBJECTIVE
Trichotillomania (TTM) is a mental health disorder characterized by repetitive urges to pull out one's hair. Cognitive deficits have been reported in people with TTM compared to controls; however, the current literature is sparse and inconclusive about affected domains. We aimed to synthesize research on cognitive functioning in TTM and investigate which cognitive domains are impaired.
METHODS
After preregistration on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), we conducted a comprehensive literature search for papers examining cognition in people with TTM versus controls using validated tests. A total of 793 papers were screened using preestablished inclusion/exclusion criteria, yielding 15 eligible studies. Random-effects meta-analysis was conducted for 12 cognitive domains.
RESULTS
Meta-analysis demonstrated significant deficits in motor inhibition and extradimensional (ED) shifting in people with TTM versus controls as measured by the stop-signal task (SST) (Hedge's = 0.45, [CI: 0.14, 0.75], = .004) and ED set-shift task ( = 0.38, [CI: 0.13, 0.62], = .003), respectively. There were no significant between-group differences in the other cognitive domains tested: verbal learning, intradimensional (ID) shifting, road map spatial ability, pattern recognition, nonverbal memory, executive planning, spatial span length, Stroop inhibition, Wisconsin card sorting, and visuospatial functioning. Findings were not significantly moderated by study quality scores.
CONCLUSIONS
Motor inhibition and ED set-shifting appear impaired in TTM. However, a cautious interpretation of results is necessary as samples were relatively small and frequently included comorbidities. Treatment interventions seeking to improve inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility merit exploration for TTM.

IMPORTANCE
Cognitive impairment contributes significantly to clinical outcome and level of function in individuals with psychotic disorders. These impairments are present already at psychosis onset at a group level; however, the question of heterogeneity in cognitive function among patients has not been systematically investigated.
OBJECTIVE
To provide an updated quantification of cognitive impairment at psychosis onset before patients receive potentially confounding antipsychotic treatment, and to investigate variability in cognitive function compared with healthy controls.
DATA SOURCES
In this systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed articles were searched up to September 15, 2022.
STUDY SELECTION
Original studies reporting data on cognitive function in antipsychotic drug-naive patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) were included.
DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS
Data were independently extracted by 2 researchers. Cognitive tasks were clustered according to 6 domains of the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) Consensus Cognitive Battery and the domain of executive function. Random-effects model meta-analyses of mean differences and coefficient of variation ratios (CVRs) were performed, as well as meta-regressions, assessment of study quality, and publication bias.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES
The main outcome measure was Hedges g for mean differences in cognition and CVR for within-group variability.
RESULTS
Fifty studies were included in the analysis with a total of 2625 individuals with FEP (mean [SD] age, 25.2 [3.6] years, 60% male; 40% female) and 2917 healthy controls (mean [SD] age, 26.0 [4.6]; 55% male; 45% female). In all cognitive domains, the FEP group displayed significant impairment compared with controls (speed of processing: Hedges g = -1.16; 95% CI, -1.35 to -0.98; verbal learning: Hedges g = -1.08; 95% CI, -1.28 to -0.88; visual learning: Hedges g = -1.05; 95% CI, -1.27 to -0.82; working memory: Hedges g = -1.04; 95% CI, -1.35 to -0.73; attention: Hedges g = -1.03; 95% CI, -1.24 to -0.82; reasoning/problem solving: Hedges g = -0.90; 95% CI, -1.12 to -0.68; executive function: Hedges g = -0.88; 95% CI, -1.07 to -0.69). Individuals with FEP also exhibited a larger variability across all domains (CVR range, 1.34-1.92).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE
Results of this systematic review and meta-analysis identified cognitive impairment in FEP before the initiation of antipsychotic treatment, with large effect sizes. The high variability within the FEP group suggests the need to identify those individuals with more severe cognitive problems who risk worse outcomes and could benefit the most from cognitive remediation.

AIM
To review the current data on cognitive and psychological characteristics of patients with CAA and on the instruments used for their evaluation.
METHODS
A systematic search was performed in Embase, Scopus and PubMed with terms related to "cerebral amyloid angiopathy", "neuropsychological measures" and "patient-reported outcome measures" from January 2001 to December 2021.
RESULTS
Out of 2851 records, 18 articles were selected. The cognitive evaluation was present in all of which, while the psychological one only in five articles. The MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination), TMT (Trail Making Test), fluency test, verbal learning test, digit span, digit symbol and Rey figure tests were the most used cognitive tests, while executive function, memory, processing speed, visuospatial function, attention and language were the most frequent impaired cognitive functions. Depression was the most considered psychological factor usually measured with BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) and GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale).
CONCLUSIONS
The results of this study might be used in clinical practice as a guide to choose cognitive and psychological instruments and integrate them in the clinical evaluation. The results might also be used in the research field for studies investigating the impact of cognitive and psychological variables on the disease course and for consensus studies aimed at define a standardized evaluation of these aspects.
