INTRODUCTION
Black people had the highest prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) of any racial/ethnic group in the United States (US) as of 2020. As racial disparities in the prevalence of ADRD are being investigated, more evidence is necessary to determine the pathways and mechanisms that either slow ADRD progression or improve quality of life for those affected. Religion/spirituality (R/S) has been shown to affect health outcomes but has rarely been studied as a possible pathway for reducing ADRD risk. Crucially, Black people also report higher levels of R/S than other racial/ethnic groups in the United States. This research asks if R/S affects ADRD risk among Black adults and if any effects persist after controlling for hypertension.
METHODS
We conducted a secondary data analysis drawing from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), a nationally representative longitudinal dataset with an oversampling of Black adults.
RESULTS
We used logistic regression analysis to demonstrate how R/S has an ameliorating impact on ADRD risk among Black people, even after controlling for hypertension. Those who never attended religious services had 2.37 higher odds of being diagnosed with ADRD than those who attended more than once a week. Further, as R/S attendance increased, ADRD risk decreased linearly.
CONCLUSION
These findings demonstrate the importance that existing cultural networks (e.g., R/S) can have for reducing ADRD burden for Black people and has important implications for the role of R/S in shaping ADRD symptomatology.

In this study, we investigated the antioxidant and anti-ageing activities of polysaccharide extract (CPE). Further studies revealed that CPE exhibited anti-ageing, and antioxidant activities , including an extended stress resistance, decreased deposition of lipofuscin, and reduced effects of amyloid β protein on mobility, decreased levels of reactive oxygen species and increased activity of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, it dramatically increased the expression of anti-stress and longevity genes and reduced the expression of ageing-related genes; therefore, it was hypothesised that the mechanism of the age-delaying effect of CPE was related to the insulin signalling pathway. In summary, CPE could delay ageing and provide a new avenue for the application and development of CPE.

This academic review examines the latest biotechnology methods for resveratrol synthesis. We aim to study the health advantages of resveratrol consumption beyond synthesis and demonstrate its potential as a therapeutic agent. An extensive examination of the current state of literature was performed, employing a diverse range of scholarly databases with the purpose of collating pertinent information and conducting in-depth research on the subject matter. The main goal was to find and assess research on resveratrol's health effects and the latest biotechnology methods for synthesizing it. This review paper discusses resveratrol synthesis methods, including their efficacy and current advances. The findings highlight the significant potential of biotechnological methods in improving both the synthesis of resveratrol and its beneficial effects on health. Our comprehensive analysis substantiates the importance of biotechnological methodologies in synthesizing resveratrol. The literature review highlights resveratrol's therapeutic properties, which have been scientifically approved for the prevention and treatment of various ailments, such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic illnesses, cancer, aging, and immunomodulation.

Aging refers to a progressive decline in biological functions, leading to age-related diseases and mortality. The transition metals, including iron, copper, and manganese, play important roles in human physiological and pathological processes. Substantial research has demonstrated that senescent cells accumulate higher levels of transition metals, which in turn accelerates the process of cellular senescence and related diseases through mechanisms such as production of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS), induction of oxidative stress, DNA damage, and mitochondrial dysfunction. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the causes of transition metal accumulation in senescent cells, as well as the mechanisms by which it further promotes cellular senescence and related diseases. The aim is to provide insights into anti-aging and treatment of aging-related diseases caused by transition metal accumulation.

The present study aimed to explore the effects of different exercise modes on neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and metabolism of skeletal muscle-related proteins in aging rats. Ten from 38 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (3-month-old) were randomly selected into young (Y) group, while the rest were raised to 21 months old and randomly divided into elderly control (O), endurance exercise (EN) and resistance exercise (R) groups. After 8 weeks of corresponding exercises training, the gastrocnemius muscles of rats were collected, and the expression of S100B in Schwann cells was detected by immunofluorescence staining. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression levels of agglutinate protein (Agrin), low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 4 (Lrp4), muscle- specific kinase protein (MuSK), downstream tyrosine kinase 7 (Dok7), phosphorylated protein kinase B (p-Akt), phosphorylated mammalian target rapamycin (p-mTOR), and phosphorylated forkhead box O1 (p-FoxO1) in rat gastrocnemius muscles. The results showed that, endurance and resistance exercises increased the wet weight ratio of gastrocnemius muscle in the aging rats. The protein expression of S100B in the R group was significantly higher than those in the O and EN groups. Proteins related to NMJ function, including Agrin, Lrp4, MuSK, and Dok7 were significantly decreased in the O group compared with those in the Y group. Resistance exercise up-regulated these four proteins in the aging rats, whereas endurance exercise could not reverse the protein expression levels of Lrp4, MuSK and Dok7. Regarding skeletal muscle-related proteins, the O group showed down-regulated p-Akt, and p-mTOR protein expression levels and up-regulated p-FoxO1 protein expression level, compared to the Y group. Resistance and endurance exercises reversed the changes in p-mTOR and p-FoxO1 protein expression in the aging rats. These findings demonstrate that both exercise modes can enhance NMJ function, increase protein synthesis and reduce the catabolism of skeletal muscle-related proteins in aging rats, with resistance exercise showing a more pronounced effect.

Looking along the physiological and physical changes in aging, in the light of a major burn, co-morbidities, surgical intervention and precaution, a geriatric burn patient requires a delicate balance of ideal burn care and rehabilitation to achieve functional independence. A 70-year-old patient, with 30% total body surface area flame burn injury, underwent bilateral partial calcanectomy secondary to calcaneus osteomyelitis, and Meek micrograft technique for burn injury on bilateral lower extremities, is presented in this case report. In order to ensure good graft take, her knees were immobilized causing bilateral soft tissue contractures. Subsequently, upon initiation of ambulation, gait abnormalities observed include absence of heel off and toe off, with heel walking. The patient was admitted for intensive inpatient rehabilitation, where significant improvement in the knee range of motion and ambulation were achieved. The patient was eventually discharged ambulatory with walker. Despite expected complications, rehabilitation management proved to be beneficial in improving function and ambulation in geriatric burn patient.

Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs) act as physical membrane contact sites facilitating material exchange and signal transmission between mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER), thereby regulating processes such as Calipid transport, mitochondrial dynamics, autophagy, ER stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, among other pathological mechanisms. Emerging evidence underscores the pivotal role of MAMs in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), particularly in aging-related pathologies. Aging significantly influences the structure and function of the heart and the arterial system, possibly due to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting from reduced antioxidant capacity and the age-related decline in organelle function, including mitochondria. Therefore, this paper begins by describing the composition, structure, and function of MAMs, followed by an exploration of the degenerative changes in MAMs and the cardiovascular system during aging. Subsequently, it discusses the regulatory pathways and approaches targeting MAMs in aging-related CVDs, to provide novel treatment strategies for managing CVDs in aging populations.

BACKGROUND
Evidence suggests that a combination of biological and social factors influence risk of dementia differently for women and men. In healthy older women, several factors may contribute to changes in cognition.
OBJECTIVE
Describe the characteristics associated with variation in cognition in a sample of cognitively healthy older Panamanian women.
METHODS
The study includes cross-sectional analyses of cognitive domains at baseline (= 357) and 17-month (SD = 2.0) follow-up (= 200) for women aged 60 years and older enrolled in the Panama Aging Research Initiative-Health Disparities (PARI-HD) study. Instruments included clinical questionnaires, physiological measures, and a neuropsychological test battery assessing global cognition and seven cognitive domains. Multiple regression analyses examined the associations between demographic and clinical characteristics and cognition at baseline. Repeated measures analyses were used to investigate changes in cognition from baseline to follow-up.
RESULTS
On average, participants were 68.6 years of age (SD = 5.9) with 16.1 years of education (SD = 4.7). Age, income, and education showed robust associations with baseline cognition. Subjective cognitive impairment was associated with lower performance in global cognition, verbal learning, and memory domains. Only performance in the attention domain decreased at follow-up, and subjective health state and depressive symptoms significantly predicted the change in attention.
DISCUSSION
Our study findings contribute to the investigation of cognitive health in older Hispanic women and to the understanding of sociodemographic and health-related factors associated with cognitive decline and the progression to cognitive impairment and dementia.

BACKGROUND
Statins are highly effective for primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and mortality. Data on the benefit of statins in adults with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and without ASCVD are limited.
OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this study was to determine whether statins are associated with a lower risk of mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in HFpEF.
METHODS
Veterans Health Administration data from 2002 to 2016, linked to Medicare and Medicaid claims and pharmaceutical data, were collected. Patients had a new HFpEF diagnosis and no known ASCVD or prior statin use at baseline. Cox proportional hazards models were fit to evaluate the association of new statin use with outcomes (all-cause mortality and MACE). Propensity score overlap weighting (PSW) was used to balance baseline characteristics.
RESULTS
Among 7,970 Veterans, 47% initiated a statin over a mean 6.0-year follow-up. At HFpEF diagnosis, mean age was 69 ± 12 years, 96% were male, 67% were White, 14% were Black, and mean EF was 60% ± 6%. Before PSW, statin users were younger with more prevalent metabolic syndrome, arthritis, and other chronic conditions. All characteristics were balanced after PSW. There were 5,314 deaths and 4,859 MACE events. After PSW, the hazard for all-cause mortality for statin users vs nonusers was 22% lower (HR: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.73-0.83). The HR for MACE was 0.79 (95% CI: 0.74-0.84), 0.69 (95% CI: 0.60-0.80) for all-cause hospitalization, and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.59-0.88) for HF hospitalization.
CONCLUSIONS
New statin use was associated with reduced all-cause mortality, MACE, and hospitalization in Veterans with HFpEF without prevalent ASCVD.
