A novel Gram-negative, aerobic, motile, rod-shaped, beige-pigmented bacterium, strain ARW1-2F2, was isolated from a seawater sample collected from Roscoff, France. Strain ARW1-2F2 was catalase-negative and oxidase-positive, and grew under mesophilic, neutrophilic and halophilic conditions. The 16S rRNA sequences revealed that strain ARW1-2F2 was closely related to LFT 1.7 and RW17-10(95.8 and 95.5 % gene sequence similarity, respectively). The genome of strain ARW1-2F2 was sequenced and had a G+C content of 28.7%. Two different measures of genome similarity, average nucleotide identity based on blast and digital DNA-DNA hybridization, indicated that strain ARW1-2F2 represents a new species. The predominant fatty acids were C ω7/C ω6 and C ω7/C ω6. The results of a polyphasic analysis supported the description of strain ARW1-2F2 as representing a novel species of the genus , for which the name sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain ARW1-2F2 (DSM 29169=KCTC 52423).

spp. is an emerging pathogen that is increasingly recognized as a cause of human infections. Gastrointestinal manifestations are most described in the case report literature. We present a case of the first documented case of spp. isolated in pericardial fluid in an immunocompromised patient with worsening cardiac tamponade that was successfully managed with an urgent pericardiocentesis and ensuing steroids, antibiotics, and a pericardial drain. The patient had a past medical history of HIV, latent syphilis, PCP pneumonia, ESRD, and hypertension, and presented with worsening dyspnea, subjective fever, myalgias, cough, pleuritic chest pain, and pericardial rub. Diagnostic workup revealed a positive COVID-19 PCR test, elevated high-sensitive cardiac troponins, elevated CRP, elevated D-dimer, and elevated creatinine. An ECG revealed diffuse ST-segment elevation, and imaging showed cardiomegaly with pulmonary vascular congestion and diffuse interstitial edema. Urgent TTE showed a large circumferential pericardial effusion with tamponade physiology present. Culture on aerobic blood agar grew spp. of unknown specific species, and blood cultures were also positive for spp. Treatment involved intravenous meropenem for five days, followed by oral ciprofloxacin, low-dose colchicine, and a tapered dose of ibuprofen. Repeat laboratory data and TTE showed complete resolution of the pericardial effusion and improved left ventricular function. This case highlights the potential for spp. to cause severe infections and the importance of considering it as a possible pathogen in patients with atypical presentations.

Arcobacter spp. has gained clinical significance as an emerging diarrheagenic pathogen associated with water reservoirs in recent years. The complete clinical significance of Arcobacter remains rather speculative due to the virulence and antibiotic susceptibility of individual strains. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Arcobacter spp. in fish, water, and shellfish. A total of 150 samples were collected from the Adana, Kayseri and Kahramanmaras provinces in Turkey. Arcobacter spp. was isolated from 32 (21%) of the 150 samples. The most prevalent species was A. cryaerophilus, 17 (56%), A. butzleri 13 (37%) and A. lacus 2 (6%). As a result, the ratios of the mviN, irgA, pldA, tlyA and hecA target genes were found as 17 (51%), 1 (3%), 7 (23%), 7 (23%), 1 (3%), respectively. While bla OXA-61, tetO and tetW were positive in all isolates, were found as mcr1/2/6, mcr3/7, and mcr5, genes %37.5, %25, and %34.3, respectively. Although in A. butzleri was found 10 (58%), 1 (3%), 3 (43%), 2 (28%) (mviN, irgA, pldA, and tlyA, respectively) virulence genes 7 (42%), 4 (57%), 5 (72%), 1 (3%) was found (mviN, irgA, tlyA, and hecA, respectively) virulence genes in A. cryoaerophilus. Moreover, was found for the mcr 1/2/6 7 (58%) genes, for the mcr 3/7 genes 3 (38%) in A. butzleri. In A. cryoaerophilus was found for the mcr 1/2/6 genes 5 (42%), for the mcr 3/7 genes 5 (62%), and for the mcr 5 gene 10 (100%). Thus, the current study indicated that the existence of Arcobacter spp. isolated from fish and mussel samples may pose a potential risk to public health.

To investigate the effect of lake water backflowing on the aquatic ecosystem in the estuary, surface water samples in the backflowing and unbackflowing areas were collected from one typical estuary of Lake Taihu, Xitiaoxi River. 16S rRNA sequencing and redundancy analysis were conducted to quantitatively elucidate the correlation between microbial community and water quality parameters. Results indicated lake water backflowing would affect the relative distribution of nitrogen species and increase the concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate, especially in the outlets of municipal sewage and agricultural drainage. For backflowing areas, more frequent water exchange could lower the seasonal fluctuation of the abundance and diversity of microbial community. RDA results showed crucial water quality parameters that greatly influence bacterial community were total organic carbon (TOC), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity (SAL), ammonia, nitrate, TN for backflowing areas, and TOC, TDS, SAL, ammonia, TN without nitrate for unbackflowing areas. Verrucomicrobia, Proteobacteria, Microcystis, and Arcobacter were dominant with 27.7%, 15.7%, 30.5%, and 25.7% contribution to the overall water quality in backflowing areas. Chloroflexi, Verrucomicrobia, Flavobacterium, and Nostocaceae were dominant with 25.0%, 18.4%, 22.3%, and 11.4% contribution to the overall water quality in unbackflowing areas. And lake water backflowing might mainly affect the amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism based on the metabolism function prediction. A better understanding of the spatiotemporal changes in water quality parameters and microbial community was obtained from this research to comprehensively assess the effect of lake water backflowing on the estuarine ecosystem.

The deterioration in reproductive performance in association with low fertility leads to significant economic losses on dairy farms. The uterine microbiota has begun to attract attention as a possible cause of unexplained low fertility. We analyzed the uterine microbiota associated with fertility by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing in dairy cows. First, the alpha (Chao1 and Shannon) and beta (unweighted and weighted UniFrac) diversities of 69 cows at four dairy farms that had passed the voluntary waiting period before the first artificial insemination (AI) were analyzed with respect to factors including farm, housing style, feeding management, parity, and AI frequency to conception. Significant differences were observed in the farm, housing style, and feeding management, except parity and AI frequency to conception. The other diversity metrics did not show significant differences in the tested factors. Similar results were obtained for the predicted functional profile. Next, the microbial diversity analysis of 31 cows at a single farm using weighted UniFrac distance matrices revealed a correlation with AI frequency to conception but not with parity. In correlation with AI frequency to conception, the predicted function profile appeared to be slightly modified and a single bacterial taxon, , was detected. The bacterial associations related to fertility were estimated. Considering these, the uterine microbiota in dairy cows can be varied depending on the farm management practices and may become one of the measures for low fertility. We examined the uterine microbiota associated with low fertility in dairy cows derived from four commercial farms via a metataxonomic approach using endometrial tissues prior to the first artificial insemination. The present study provided two new insights into the relevance of uterine microbiota with respect to fertility. First, the uterine microbiota varied depending on housing style and feeding management. Next, a subtle change was observed in functional profile analysis: a formation of uterine microbiota was detected to be different in correlation with fertility in one farm studied. Considering these insights, an examination system on bovine uterine microbiota is hopefully established based on continuous research on this topic.

A broad search for infections revealed intraerythrocytic parasites on blood smear and positive polymerase chain reaction for ; elevated IgM/IgG serologies for ; elevated IgM/IgG serologies and qualitative polymerase chain reaction for Epstein-Barr virus; and fecal culture growth of . In this report, we discuss the known or suspected association of these infectious agents with Guillain-Barré syndrome. This case also highlights the importance, in the setting of endemic exposure, of screening for multiple coinfections that can be transmitted by the same arthropod vector.

The contamination of fresh produce with foodborne pathogens has been an on-going concern with outbreaks linked to these commodities. Evaluation of farm practices, such as use of manure, irrigation water source, and other factors that could influence pathogen prevalence in the farming environment could lead to improved mitigation strategies to reduce the potential for contamination events. Soil, water, manure, and compost were sampled from farms in Ohio and Georgia to identify the prevalence of , (), , and Shiga-toxin-producing (STEC), as well as , an emerging human pathogen. This study investigated agricultural practices to determine which influenced pathogen prevalence, i.e., the percent positive samples. These efforts identified a low prevalence of , STEC, and in soil and water (< 10%), preventing statistical modeling of these pathogens. However, and were found in soil (13 and 7%, respectively), manure (49 and 32%, respectively), and water samples (18 and 39%, respectively) at a comparatively higher prevalence, suggesting different dynamics are involved in their survival in the farm environment. and prevalence data, soil chemical characteristics, as well as farm practices and weather, were analyzed using structural equation modeling to identify which factors play a role, directly or indirectly, on the prevalence of these pathogens. These analyses identified an association between pathogen prevalence and weather, as well as biological soil amendments of animal origin. Increasing air temperature increased and decreased . prevalence was found to be inversely correlated with the use of surface water for irrigation, despite a high prevalence in surface water suggesting other factors may play a role. Furthermore, prevalence increased when the microbiome's Simpson's Diversity Index decreased, which occurred as soil fertility increased, leading to an indirect positive effect for soil fertility on prevalence. These results suggest that pathogen, environment, and farm management practices, in addition to produce commodities, all need to be considered when developing mitigation strategies. The prevalence of and versus the other pathogens suggests that multiple mitigation strategies may need to be employed to control these pathogens.

The taste and flavor of vary from region to region, owing to the differences in microorganisms. Illumina MiSeq sequencing was used to identify and quantify the microbial community composition of the broth and leaves of the naturally fermented collected from northeast China. The alpha and beta diversity of the samples from three areas in Heilongjiang province shown that the complexity of bacterial diversity of the three samples was C, A and B in turn. The widely existed in fermented , of these, , subsp. , subsp. , and were more abundant in the leaves than in fermentation broth. Other genera of lactic acid bacteria and , which have potential probiotic properties, were also present. However, some harmful bacteria such as and were also detected.

The application of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology is critical, but many challenges remain. In this paper, a microbial fuel cell (MFC) is used to treat molasses wastewater, and the effluent is used as the substrate to promote the growth of urease-producing bacteria. The results showed that the maximum voltage of MFC was 500 mV, and the maximum power density was 169.86 mW/m. The mineralization rate reached 100% on the 15 day, and the mineralized product was calcite CaCO. According to the microbial community analysis, the unclassified_Comamondaceae, Arcobacter, and Aeromonas, which could improve the OH, signal molecular transmission and small molecular nutrients to promote the urease activity of urease-producing bacteria. The above conclusions provide a new way to reuse molasses wastewater efficiently and to apply MICP technology in dust suppression.

Antibiotics are increasingly used and released into the marine environment due to the rapid development of mariculture, resulting in spread of antibiotic resistance. The pollution, distribution, and characteristics of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbiomes have been investigated in this study. Results showed that 20 antibiotics were detected in Chinese coastal environment, with predominance of erythromycin-HO, enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline. In coastal mariculture sites, antibiotic concentrations were significantly higher than in control sites, and more types of antibiotics were detected in the South than in the North of China. Residues of enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and sulfadiazine posed high resistance selection risks. β-Lactam, multi-drug and tetracycline resistance genes were frequently detected with significantly higher abundance in the mariculture sites. Of the 262 detected ARGs, 10, 26, and 19 were ranked as high-risk, current-risk, future-risk, respectively. The main bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, of which 25 genera were zoonotic pathogens, with Arcobacter and Vibrio in particular ranking in the top10. Opportunistic pathogens were more widely distributed in the northern mariculture sites. Phyla of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the potential hosts of high-risk ARGs, while the conditional pathogens were associated with future-risk ARGs, indicating a potential threat to human health.
