PURPOSE
The literature is scarce in exploring the role of imaging parameters like ultrasound (US) as a biomarker for surgical outcomes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the associations between skin US parameters and revision surgery following spine lumbar fusion.
METHODS
Posterior lumbar fusion patients with 2-years follow-up were assessed. Previous fusion or revision not due to adjacent segment disease (ASD) were excluded. Revisions were classified as cases and non-revision were classified as controls. US measurements conducted at two standardized locations on the lumbar back. Skin echogenicity of the average dermal (AD), upper 1/3 of the dermal (UD), lower 1/3 of the dermal (LD), and subcutaneous layer were measured. Echogenicity was calculated with the embedded echogenicity function of our institution's imaging platform (PACS). Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
RESULTS
A total of 128 patients (51% female, age 62 [54-72] years) were included in the final analysis. 17 patients required revision surgery. AD, UD, and LD echogenicity showed significantly higher results among revision cases 124.5 [IQR = 115.75,131.63], 128.5 [IQR = 125,131.63] and 125.5 [IQR = 107.91,136.50] compared to the control group 114.3 [IQR = 98.83,124.8], 118.5 [IQR = 109.28,127.50], 114 [IQR = 94.20,126.75] respectively.
CONCLUSION
The findings of this study demonstrate a significant association between higher echogenicity values in different layers of the dermis and requiring revision surgery. The results provide insights into the potential use of skin US parameters as predictors for revision surgery. These findings may reflect underlying alterations in collagen. Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms driving these associations.

Urticaria, also known as hives, is a common condition thought to affect up to 20% of individuals worldwide in their lifetime. This skin condition is characterized by the appearance of pruritic, erythematous papules or plaques with superficial swelling of the dermis. The major complaint is the symptom of pruritus. Angioedema, which involves a deeper swelling of dermal or mucosal tissues, may accompany urticaria. Urticaria can be classified by both time course of symptoms and the underlying etiology.

BACKGROUND/AIM
Dermal papilla (DP) stem cells are known for their remarkable regenerative capacity, making them a valuable model for assessing the effects of natural products on cellular processes, including stemness, and autophagy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Autophagy and stemness characteristics were assessed using real-time RT-PCR to analyze mRNA levels, along with immunofluorescence and western blot techniques for protein level evaluation.
RESULTS
Butterfly Pea, Emblica Fruits, Kaffir Lime, and Thunbergia Laurifolia extracts induced autophagy in DP cells. Kaffir Lime-treated cells exhibited increase in the OCT4, NANOG, and SOX2 mRNA (6-, 5, and 5.5-fold, respectively), and protein levels (4-, 3-, and 1.5-fold, respectively). All extracts activated the survival protein kinase B (Akt) in DP cells.
CONCLUSION
Natural products are a promising source for promoting hair growth by rejuvenating hair stem cells.

BACKGROUND/AIM
Angiosarcomas of the face are rare but present significant treatment challenges due to their origin in the supportive tissues of blood or lymphatic vessels. Achieving optimal balance between oncological efficacy and aesthetic outcomes requires a multidisciplinary approach, particularly in cases where radical R0 resection is necessary. Delays often occur, especially during histopathological examinations, which can complicate primary plastic reconstruction before definitive pathological findings.
CASE REPORT
To address this issue, we present a case with the use of porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix for temporary soft tissue coverage as a viable option in a case of angiosarcoma of the face. This is particularly useful in situations where frozen sections risk the loss of critical anatomical structures and intraoperative diagnosis is not feasible. This approach allowed for satisfactory wound coverage and granulation during diagnostic phases, paving the way for oncologically manageable situations and functional rehabilitation.
CONCLUSION
Temporary soft tissue coverage with porcine-derived acellular dermal matrix is a valuable option in tumor surgery of rare and complex situations.

Melanoma is a type of tumor skin with high metastatic potential. Reconstructed human skin, development for pre-clinic assay, are make using primary human cells, but with same limitations. The aim this study was to characterize a cell culture model, with structure similar to human skin containing melanoma cells entirely from cell lines. Reconstructed skin with melanoma were development using human fibroblasts (MRC5), human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCat), and human melanoma (SK-MEL-28) embedded in collagen type I. The structure was characterized by hematoxylin-eosin stained, as well as points of melanoma cell invasion, which was associated with activity of MMPs (MMP-2 and MMP-9) by zymographic method. Then, the gene expression of the target molecular mechanisms involved in melanoma progression were evaluated. Here, the model development showed a region epidermis organized and separated from the dermis, with fibroblast cells confined and melanoma cells form delimited area invasion. MMP-2 and MMP-9 were identified during of cell culture and gene expression of BRAF, NRAS, and Vimentin was confirmed. The proposed model provides one more opportunity to study in vitro tumor biology of melanoma and also to allows the study of new drugs with more reliable results then whats we would find in vivo.

The biobanks from dermal biopsies represent an interesting strategy for biodiversity conservation. Nevertheless, the morphological and cellular patterns of the dermis can be influenced by the age and sex of the individual. Therefore, evaluating these factors is interesting for forming biobanks of Antillean manatees. These animals, representatives of marine fauna, have had their population reduced, and biobanks are essential for their conservation. Then, we evaluated the effects of age (3.5 years vs. 3.6-16 years vs. 23.6 years) and sex (males vs. females) on morphological and cellular parameters using histological and in vitro culture techniques. Regardless of age, no differences were observed for dermal thickness, collagen fibres, tissue proliferative activity and viable cell recovery. Nonetheless, fibroblast reduction was observed in groups aged 23.6 years compared to other animals (p < 0.05). Additionally, cells from animals aged 3.6-16 years showed more significant mitochondrial damage than the other groups (p < 0.05). Regardless of sex, no differences were observed for dermal thickness, collagen fibres, tissue proliferative activity and viable cell recovery; however, females had fewer fibroblasts than males (p < 0.05). Cells from females showed lower mitochondrial damage when compared to cells from males. In summary, although age and sex do not influence dermal thickness and cell recovery, variations in the number of fibroblasts and mitochondrial characteristics were observed among the groups. These differences may be significant for understanding the dermis aspects to be correlated to biobank systems.

Generalized lymphatic anomaly (GLA), previously known as lymphangiomatosis, is a rare developmental disease characterized by abnormal proliferation of lymphatic vascular structures that may involve the dermis, soft tissue, bone, and visceral parenchyma. Being an uncommon condition and the lack of specific symptoms often result in a delayed diagnosis or even misdiagnosis, which, in addition to its progressive nature, can lead to dysfunction of vital organs, and ultimately, a poor prognosis. In this report, we present a unique case of GLA in an upper Egyptian female child. Increasing awareness of the possible phenotypic presentations of such anomalies can lead to early diagnosis and possibly more effective management before significant organ damage ensues.

The aim of this review is to present the potential application of camphor-a bicyclic monoterpene ketone-in the prevention of skin infections. Skin diseases represent a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by prolonged symptoms that significantly diminish the quality of life. They affect the dermis, the epidermis, and even subcutaneous tissue. They very often have a bacterial or fungal background. Therapy for dermatological skin disorders is difficult and long-term. Therefore, it is important to find a compound, preferably of natural origin, that (i) prevents the initiation of this infection and (ii) supports the skin's repair process. Based on its documented anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-acne, anesthetic, strengthening, and warming properties, camphor can be used as a preventative measure in dermatological infectious diseases and as a component in medical and cosmetic products. This work discusses the structure and physicochemical properties of camphor, its occurrence, and methods of obtaining it from natural sources as well as through chemical synthesis. The use of camphor in industrial preparations is also presented. Additionally, after a detailed review of the literature, the metabolism of camphor, its interactions with other medicinal substances, and its antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi involved in skin diseases are discussed with regard to their resistance.

The Effects of Dietary Supplementation with Collagen and Vitamin C and Their Combination with Hyaluronic Acid on Skin Density, Texture and Other Parameters: A Randomised, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.
Collagen dietary supplements are becoming increasingly popular as a means to reduce signs of skin ageing. The objective of this three-way, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study was to examine and contrast the effects of dietary supplementation with a daily dose of 5 g hydrolysed collagen with 80 mg of vitamin C (CP product) and their combination with 30 mg of hyaluronic acid (CPHA product) over 16 weeks. Validated methods were utilised for the objective evaluation of skin parameters. In total, 87 subjects (women, 40-65 years) completed the entire trial, distributed across the groups as follows: placebo group ( = 29), CPHA group ( = 28), and CP group ( = 30). The results showed beneficial effects of both test products, with notable enhancements in dermis density, skin texture, and a reduction in the severity of wrinkles. In contrast, the administration of either of the products did not yield any significant impacts on skin elasticity or hydration. Observation of the investigated skin parameters did not show superior effects of the addition of hyaluronic acid (HA) to collagen. Therefore, the ability of supplementation with HA to improve the effects on investigated skin parameters beyond the supplementation of collagen alone cannot be confirmed.

Turmeric () contains curcumin, demethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC). Nevertheless, curcumin is the most researched active ingredient for its numerous pharmacological effects. We investigated the impact of these curcuminoids found in Ryudai gold, an approved cultivar of , on wound healing, inflammation, and diabetes. Sub-planter injections of carrageenan induced acute paw inflammation in rats. The wound-healing ability of 1% curcuminoids was examined by making a 6 mm round wound on the shaved dorsum of the mice with a biopsy punch. A single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) was used to induce diabetes in mice. Curcuminoids at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body weight were used with feed and as a gastric gavage to treat diabetes and inflammation in experimental animals. Paw thickness was measured at 1, 3, and 6 h following carrageenan injection. After three hours, mean paw volume was 58% in carrageenan-injected mice, which was 35%, 37%, and 31% in the curcumin, DMC, and BDMC groups, respectively. Histopathology of the paw tissue demonstrated severe infiltration of inflammatory cells and thickening of the dermis, which were remarkably improved by the curcuminoids. The wound-healing abilities were significantly higher in the curcumin- (95.0%), DMC- (93.17%), and BDMC-treated (89.0%) groups, in comparison to that of the control (65.09%) group at day nine. There were no significant differences in wound-healing activity among the groups treated with 1% curcuminoids throughout the study. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes was characterized by an increased blood glucose (552.2 mg/dL) and decreased body weight (31.2 g), compared to that of the control rats (145.6 mg/dL and 46.8 g blood glucose and body weight, respectively). It also caused an increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 44.2 U/L) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST; 55.8 U/L) compared to that of the control group (18.6 U/L and 20.1 U/L, respectively). Histopathological examination of the liver showed that diabetes caused hepatic cellular necrosis, congestion of the central vein, and parenchymatous degeneration. However, all three curcuminoids significantly decreased blood glucose levels, ALT, and AST and improved the histopathological score of the liver. These results evidenced that not only curcumin but also DMC and BDMC have potent anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and anti-diabetic efficacy, and the Ryudai gold variety of turmeric could be used as a functional food supplement.
