The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association between preweaning diarrhea and measures of survival, health and production. The measures of interest included survival (mortality before first calving and time to removal from the herd), health (retained fetal membranes, metritis, mastitis and somatic cell count), and production (305d mature equivalent milk yield and time to first calving). A secondary objective was to investigate if these associations varied according to the age of the calf when the case of diarrhea occurred. Herd records from a farm located in Southern Australia were used to conduct a retrospective cohort study where subjects (calves) with diarrhea were enrolled at the time of their first case along with 2 subjects without diarrhea, matched for age (±3 d) and date of birth (±15 d), amounting to 9833 calves in the data set. Survival analysis was conducted to determine if preweaning diarrhea was associated with death in the short term (first 20 d after enrollment), medium term (21 to 100 d after enrollment) and long-term (101 d after enrollment to first calving). Crude incidence rate ratios, Kaplan-Meier curves and hazard ratios (HR, Cox regression) were derived for each event-based outcome (e.g., death, calving, mastitis). Multivariable linear models were used for continuous outcomes. Calves with preweaning diarrhea had greater mortality rates in the short term (hazard ratio, HR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.87-3.29) and medium term (HR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.41-2.55) but not in the long term (HR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.79-1.22). A small negative association between preweaning diarrhea and time to first calving was found, with calves with diarrhea calving 4 d later than calves without diarrhea (HR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.91-1.00). Rates of post-calving removal from the herd (death or culling) were higher in calves with a history of preweaning diarrhea (HR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.26), as were peak lactation log somatic cell count (+0.08, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.14). Further research is needed to replicate these novel findings as they are based on exploratory analyses and could be spurious findings. No substantial associations were observed for the other measures of interest. Our study findings support existing research demonstrating the significance of preweaning diarrhea as a significant cause of calf mortality, and raises new hypotheses about other potential impacts during lactation.

The rapidly growing demand for food in human societies has led to the extensive use of fertilizers, significantly contributing to water pollution. Grey water footprints (GWF) serve as a crucial method for measuring Non-point Source (NPS) pollution, particularly in agriculture. Traditional assessments of agricultural GWF neglect biologically fixed nitrogen and the use of organic fertilizers. This research proposed a modified method to assess the GWF of Chinese agriculture from 2000 to 2020, considering the impact of Nitrogen fixation in crops and the use of organic fertilizer. We also analyzed the determinants of Agricultural Nitrogen Fixation Intensity (ANFI) using the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) method to better understand factors influencing agricultural GWF. Our findings include: (1) Grain cereals (e.g., maize, rice and wheat) significantly contribute to nitrogen fixation in crop organs, accounting for 87.7%, whereas the other six economic crops contribute the rest of 12.3%. Human wastes accounts Nitrogen emissions for 1.40%, and emissions by livestock product, red meat contributes 16.26%, while white meat, eggs, and milk collectively contribute 82.34%. (2) Across China, there is an overestimation of GWF by 22.4 hundred million per year, about 5.13% of the total GWF measured by traditional methods. It appears that the overestimation of GWF in plain regions with more arable land tends to be somewhat more pronounced compared to plateau and coastal municipalities. Biotechnological advancements in capacity of nitrogen fixation for key crops (e.g., maize, wheat, rice) can alleviate agricultural water pollution. The modified methodology provides a robust scientific basis for more precise application of GWF assessments, highlighting the substantial overestimation by traditional methods in China.

Rose polyphenols, key functional components in roses, require adequate bioaccessibility for their health benefits, subject to influence by food components and processing. Investigating the impact of various thermal sterilization methods on the bioaccessibility of rose polyphenols in rose tea with milk and the underlying mechanisms, our findings indicated a significant increase in bioaccessibility following treatment at 85 °C/30 min. Conversely, 121 °C/15 min treatment decreased bioaccessibility. Examining the interaction between β-casein in milk and rose polyphenols under different sterilization conditions, SEM and particle size analysis revealed binding, with fluorescence spectroscopy indicating non-covalent bonds. Binding forces followed the order 121 °C > 85 °C > 25 °C. Notably, at 85 °C, non-covalent binding improved polyphenol bioaccessibility, while the intensified binding at 121 °C decreased it. SDS-PAGE and amino acid analysis confirmed no covalent bond. This study establishes a theoretical basis for selecting thermal sterilization temperatures for milk-flower combinations, considering polyphenol bioaccessibility.

Anthocyanin (ACN) has attracted considerable attention due to its wide range of physiological effects. However, challenges such as poor stability and limited bioavailability have hindered its utilization in functional foods. To address these issues, this research utilized milk-derived extracellular vesicles (MEV) as carriers for encapsulating and binding ACN through various techniques, including ultrasonic, electroporation, saponin treatment, incubation, and freeze-thaw cycles. The objective of these approaches was to enhance the stability of ACN and improve its oral delivery. Notably, the ACN-loaded MEV (MEV-ACN) prepared through ultrasonic exhibited small particle sizes and good stability under processing, storage, and simulated digestion conditions. Cellular studies revealed that MEV-ACN exhibited pro-oxidant properties and induced oxidative stress, leading to cell apoptosis with greater efficacy compared to free ACN. These findings suggest that encapsulating ACN within MEV can significantly enhance its processing and oral stability, as well as strengthening its dietary defense capabilities in anti-tumor applications.

The plant acts as an important route for the transfer of radionuclides from the soil to animals, leading to the transfer of radiation to human food products such as beef and milk. Therefore, the level of radioactivity in fodder plays a crucial role in deciding whether cattle may be allowed to graze in a certain area. In this study, the activities of Ra, Th and K were measured via gamma-ray spectrometry on different fodder samples, including napier leaves, rice straw, corn stalks, guinea grass, mixed pasture, palm oil leaves and palm kernel collected from Penang, Malaysia. Theoretical calculations were also conducted to estimate the levels of these radionuclides in caw's products (beef and milk), as well as their potential radiological impact on local consumers. On average, the annual effective dose due to ingestion of radionuclides in milk was 11.39 μSv y, whereas in beef it was 5.63 μSv y. These values are significantly lower than the worldwide average of 290 μSv y. Research confirmed that farmers' usage of the aforementioned feeds did not cause any radiation-related health risks.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Serum markers capable of detecting mild levels of undernutrition, such as insufficient dietary protein intake (IDPI), have not been established among community-dwelling older adults. Although the serum albumin redox state, expressed as the ratio of reduced albumin (Alb) to total Alb (the reduced albumin ratio), has the potential to overcome this challenge, empirical epidemiological data are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the association between a serum reduced Alb ratio and dietary protein intake among community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS
This study analyzed cross-sectional data from 1,005 community dwelling population (572 males and 433 females) aged 70-84 years who participated in the Itabashi Longitudinal Study on Aging. Exclusion criteria included participants with incomplete data, individuals with a history of kidney disease and high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The dietary protein intake was estimated using validated food frequency questionnaires. The IDPI was defined as not meeting the level recommended by the Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese (Men ≥60 g/day, Women ≥50 g/day).
RESULTS
IDPI was observed in 14.1% of the study population. Logistic regression analyses adjusted for sex, age, body weight and malnutrition showed that a serum reduced Alb ratio was significantly associated with IDPI (odds ratio = 0.962, 95% confidence interval = 0.926-0.999), whereas serum albumin concentration was not (odds ratio = 0.549, 95% confidence interval = 0.285-1.061).
CONCLUSIONS
A serum reduced Alb ratio would be a useful indicator of protein insufficiency among community-dwelling older adults.

Very early onset inflammatory bowel disease (VEO-IBD) is called when age of onset of IBD occurs below 6 years. Though it is rare, it has been increasing over last decade with decreasing age of onset. VEO-IBD is different compared with pediatric and adult-onset IBD in many aspects, including the disease type, location of the lesion, disease behavior and genetic susceptibility. These children with VEO-IBD are usually present with more severe disease than older children and adults. VEO-IBD is associated with monogenic defect. The thought of a monogenic cause of VEO-IBD was first confirmed by the detection of mutations of interleukin 10 (IL-10) receptor genes that cause impaired IL-10 signaling. Monogenic IBD possesses significant concern because it usually presents with refractory to conventional IBD treatment or fistulous Crohn's disease, so early treatment with biologics or an alternative approach such as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) might be looked-for. Before establishing IBD, we must think of more common diseases of this age group. Infection and Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) are two common conditions and it can cause severe colitis. Confirmation of chronic intestinal inflammation by endoscopies is of greatest significance for the diagnosis of IBD. There should be no age limit for performing endoscopies. Severe disease should be treated with biologic agents and surgery. Identification of genes associated with IBD leads to better understanding of its pathogenesis, which could help to provide more targeted interventions. We discuss the topic here to create awareness among Pediatricians so that the patients can be benefited.

BACKGROUND
Oral immunotherapy (OIT) has emerged as the most popular therapy for food allergy. However, data on the long-term adherence and efficacy of this approach are sparse.
OBJECTIVE
We aimed to assess the long-term adherence rates to OIT protocol and the associated risk of allergic reactions.
METHODS
Patients who completed milk OIT and reached a maintenance dose of 200 ml of milk were surveyed biannually on their dairy consumption and occurrence of allergic reactions. A survival analysis was performed to evaluate the association between the risk of reaction and adherence to OIT maintenance protocol.
RESULTS
The cohort consisted of 50 patients. Only 56% of the cohort adhered to protocol, which consisted of ingesting a minimum of 200 ml of milk at least 3 times per week. Adherent patients had a significantly reduced risk of allergic reactions, as well as a reduced incidence of anaphylaxis, healthcare/ER visits, and epinephrine/antihistamine administration.
CONCLUSION
The findings demonstrate the importance of consistent maintenance dose consumption in the management of food allergies, with regular milk consumption contributing to the maintenance of unresponsiveness and decreased risk of allergic symptoms.

Mastitis, an inflammation of the mammary gland affecting milk production and quality in dairy herds, is often associated with Staphylococcus spp. in goats. Neutrophils are crucial in combating infections by migrating into milk and deploying various defense strategies, including the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) composed of DNA, histones, and bactericidal proteins. This study investigated whether NETs are released by goat neutrophils stimulated in vitro by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus warneri, two common pathogens of goat mastitis. PMNs were isolated from blood from healthy adult goats. We evaluated goat NET formation by stimulating cells with: phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) as a positive control, cytochalasin for inhibition of actin polymerization, S. aureus, and S. warneri. NET formation was observed in response to chemical stimulation and bacterial presence, effectively trapping pathogens. Variations in NET formation between S. aureus and S. warneri suggest pathogen-specific responses. These findings suggest that the formation of NETs may be an important complementary mechanism in the defense against mastitis in goats. In conclusion, this study unveils a novel defense mechanism in goats, indicating the role of NETs against S. aureus and S. warneri in mastitis.

Omega-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Nonseafood and Estimated Intake in the USA: Quantitative Analysis by Covalent Adduct Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry.
Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) play critical roles in human development and health. Their intake is often effectively estimated solely based on seafood consumption, though the high intake of terrestrial animal-based foods with minor amounts of LCPUFA may be significant. Covalent adduct chemical ionization (CACI) tandem mass spectrometry is one approach for structural and quantitative analysis of minor unsaturated fatty acids (FA), for which standards are unavailable. Here, CACI-MS and MS/MS are used to identify and quantify minor omega-3 LCPUFA of terrestrial animal foods based on the application of measured response factors (RFs) to various FA. American mean intakes of pork, beef, chicken, and eggs contribute 20, 27, 45, and 71 mg/day of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), respectively. The estimated intake of omega-3 DHA, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosapentaenoic acid from nonseafood sources is significant, at 164, 103, and 330 mg/day, greater than most existing estimates of omega-3 LCPUFA intake.
