Specialized chemicals are used for intensifying food production, including boosting meat and crop yields. Among the applied formulations, antibiotics and pesticides pose a severe threat to the natural balance of the ecosystem, as they either contribute to the development of multidrug resistance among pathogens or exhibit ecotoxic and mutagenic actions of a persistent character. Recently, cold atmospheric pressure plasmas (CAPPs) have emerged as promising technologies for degradation of these organic pollutants. CAPP-based technologies show eco-friendliness and potency for the removal of organic pollutants of diverse chemical formulas and different modes of action. For this reason, various types of CAPP-based systems are presented in this review and assessed in terms of their constructions, types of discharges, operating parameters, and efficiencies in the degradation of antibiotics and persistent organic pollutants. Additionally, the key role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) is highlighted. Moreover, optimization of the CAPP operating parameters seems crucial to effectively remove contaminants. Finally, the CAPP-related paths and technologies are further considered in terms of biological and environmental effects associated with the treatments, including changes in antibacterial properties and toxicity of the exposed solutions, as well as the potential of the CAPP-based strategies for limiting the spread of multidrug resistance.

Atmospheric nonthermal plasma (ANTP) has rapidly evolved as an innovative tool in biomedicine with various applications, especially in treating skin diseases. In particular, the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS), which are generated by ANTP, plays an important role in the biological signaling pathways of human cells. Unfortunately, excessive amounts of these reactive species significantly result in cellular damage and cell death induction. To ensure the safe application of ANTP, preclinical in vitro studies must be conducted before proceeding to in vivo or clinical trials involving humans. Our study aimed to investigate adverse effects on genetic substances in murine fibroblast cells exposed to ANTP. Cell viability and proliferation were markedly reduced after exposing the cells with plasma. Both extracellular and intracellular reactive species, especially RNS, were significantly increased upon plasma exposure in the culture medium and the cells. Notably, significant DNA damage in the cells was observed in the cells exposed to plasma. However, plasma was not classified as a mutagen in the Ames test. This suggested that plasma led to the generation of both extracellular and intracellular reactive species, particularly nitrogen species, which affect cell proliferation and are also known to induce genetic damage in fibroblast cells. These results highlight the genotoxic and mutagenic effects of ANTP, emphasizing the need for the cautious selection of plasma intensity in specific applications to avoid adverse side effects resulting from reactive species production.

This explorative study aimed to assess the mutagenicity and genotoxicity of stored-cooked beef patties formulated with and without phenols (7.00 mg of phenols/80-g patty) extracted from olive vegetation water (OVW), as related to the formation of cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) and heterocyclic amines (HCAs). The patties were packaged in a modified atmosphere, sampled during cold storage (4 °C) for 9 days, and grilled at 200 °C. The genotoxicity was evaluated by the Comet assay. The patty extract was found to be genotoxic on primary peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), while no mutagenicity was detected. The addition of OVW phenols significantly decreased the genotoxicity of the patty extract and reduced the total COPs content in stored-cooked patties (4.59 times lower than control); however, it did not affect the content of total HCAs (31.51-36.31 ng/patty) and the revertants' number. Therefore, these results demonstrate that the OVW phenols were able to counteract the formation of genotoxic compounds in stored-cooked beef patties.

This study addressed the harmful effects of artificial colors in pediatric populations, including children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as those without behavioral disorders. There is a consensus that synthetic food colorings have several impacts on consumers, especially pediatrics, due to their influence on sensory appeal, which can encourage preference for certain foods. The results revealed that these color additives are directly linked to a series of health problems, with a greater impact on children, including a predisposition to pathological conditions such as carcinogenic, allergenic, mutagenic, cytotoxic, and clastogenic activities, as well as gastrointestinal and respiratory problems, in addition to behavioral changes in children with and without diagnosed disorders. The harms of synthetic dyes in children with or without comorbidities are worrying and require a careful and proactive approach from parents, caregivers and public authorities.

It is crucial to discover novel antimicrobial drugs to combat resistance. This study investigated the antibacterial properties of halicin (SU3327), an AI-identified anti-diabetic drug, against 13 kinds of common clinical pathogens of animal origin, including multidrug-resistant strains. Employing minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assessments, halicin demonstrated a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect. Time-killing assays revealed its concentration-dependent bactericidal activity against ATCC 25922 ( ATCC 25922), ATCC 29213 ( ATCC 29213), and S6 ( S6) after 4 h of treatment at concentrations above the MIC. Halicin exhibited longer post-antibiotic effects (PAEs) and sub-MIC effects (PA-SMEs) for 25922, 29213, and S6 compared to ceftiofur and ciprofloxacin, the commonly used veterinary antimicrobial agents, indicating sustained antibacterial action. Additionally, the results of consecutive passaging experiments over 40 d at sub-inhibitory concentrations showed that bacteria exhibited difficulty in developing resistance to halicin. Toxicology studies confirmed that halicin exhibited low acute toxicity, being non-mutagenic, non-reproductive-toxic, and non-genotoxic. Blood biochemical results suggested that halicin has no significant impact on hematological parameters, liver function, and kidney function. Furthermore, halicin effectively treated respiratory infections in murine models. These results underscore the potential of halicin as a new antibacterial agent with applications against clinically relevant pathogens in veterinary medicine.

OBJECTIVE
To compare the prognostic value of two predictive models based on C-reactive protein (CRP) and albumin (ALB), namely the CRP to ALB ratio (CAR) and the Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), in newly diagnosed patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).
METHODS
The data of newly diagnosed DLBCL patients admitted to our center from May 2014 to January 2022 were reviewed. A total of 111 patients who completed at least 4 cycles of R-CHOP or R-CHOP-like chemotherapy with detailed clinical, laboratory data and follow-up information were included. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to evaluate the predictive value of pre-treatment CAR on disease progression and survival. Furthermore, the association between CAR and baseline clinical, laboratory characteristics of patients was evaluated, and progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were compared between different CAR and GPS subgroups. Finally, the univariate and multivariate COX propor-tional hazard regression models were used to analyze the factors affecting disease outcomes.
RESULTS
ROC curve showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of CAR predicting PFS and OS in DLBCL patients was 0.687 ( =0.002) and 0.695 ( =0.005), respectively, with the optimal cut-off value of 0.11 for both predicting PFS and OS. Compared with the lower CAR (<0.11) group, the higher CAR (≥0.11) group had more clinical risk factors, including age >60 years ( =0.025), ECOG score ≥2 ( =0.004), Lugano stage III-IV ( < 0.001), non-germinal center B-cell-like (non-GCB) subtype ( =0.035), elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ( < 0.001), extranodal involved site >1 ( =0.004) and IPI score >2 ( < 0.001). The interim response evaluation of patients showed that the overall response rate (ORR) and complete response rate (CRR) in the lower CAR group were both significantly better than those in the higher CAR group (ORR: 96.9% 80.0%, =0.035; CRR: 63.6% 32.5%, =0.008). With a median follow-up of 24 months, patients with lower CAR had significantly longer median PFS and OS than those with higher CAR (median PFS: not reached 67 months, =0.0026; median OS: not reached 67 months, =0.002), while there was no statistical difference in PFS ( =0.11) and OS ( =0.11) in patients with GPS of 0, 1, and 2. Multivariate Cox regression analysis indicated that only sex (male) and IPI score >2 were independent risk factors for both PFS and OS.
CONCLUSION
CAR is significantly correlated with disease progression and survival in DLBCL patients; And compared with GPS, CAR has more advantages in predicting disease outcomes in DLBCL patients.

OBJECTIVE
To investigate the clinical efficacy and prognosis of Rituximab combined with DHAX and CHOP regimen in the first-line treatment of elderly patients with newly diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).
METHODS
A total of 36 elderly patients with DLBCL who were admitted and treated with 3 of more courses of treatment from August 2011 to August 2021 were retrospectively analyzed, and they were divided into rituximab±DHAX (R±DHAX) regimen group (18 cases) and rituximab±CHOP (R-CHOP) regimen group (18 cases) according to the treatment plan, and clinical features, efficacy and survival of the patients were observed.
RESULTS
Compared with R-CHOP group, patients of the R±DHAX group were older, and had worse performance status and higher IPI score, the differences between two groups in age, ECOG score and IPI score were statistically significant ( =0.005 =0.018, =0.035), but there were no significant differences beween two groups in gender, whether there were B symptoms, whether LDH was elevated, whether there was extranodal involvement, cell origin, bone marrow infiltration, and whether rituximab was combined ( =0.738, =1, =0.315, =0.305, =0.413, =0.177, =0.711, =0.229). The efficacy could be evaluated in 36 cases, including CR 14 (38.9%), PR 17 (47.2%), PD 5 (13.9%), and ORR of 86.1% (31/36). There were no statistically significant differences in CR[(27.8%(5/18) 50.0%(9/18); >0.05] and PR [44.4%(8/18) 50.0%(9/18); >0.05] of R±DHAX group and R-CHOP group, there was statistically significant difference in ORR[72.2%(13/18) 100.0%(18/18); =0.045] between two groups. The 1-year OS of R±DHAX group and R-CHOP group was (38.9±11.5%)% and (94.4±7.4%)%, respectively, 2-year OS was (16.7±8.8)% and (72.2±10.6)%, respectively, and the differences between two groups were statistically significant ( =0.001, =0.002). The median survival time in the R±DHAX group was 11 months(95% :8.9-13.1), and the median survival time in the R-CHOP group was not reached, and there was a statistically significant difference between the groups ( < 0.001).
CONCLUSION
For elderly DLBCL patients, R±DHAX may not be superior to R-CHOP in OS, and ECOG score, IPI score and age may affect the survival of elderly DLBCL patients. However, R±DHAX regimen is safe, tolerable and has a certain efficacy, which can be used as one of the clinical treatment options for elderly DLBCL.

[The Reduction of CD4 T Lymphocytes after the Treatment of Follicular Lymphoma with the Bendamustine Containing Regimen May Predict the Occurrence of Infection and Efficacy].
OBJECTIVE
To investigate the effectiveness, safety, and related prognostic factors of the treatment of follicular lymphoma (FL) with a regimen containing Bendamustine.
METHODS
The clinical data of 129 FL patients who were treated with Bendamustine containing regimen were collected from January 1,2020 to October 30,2022 in the Hematology Department of Lianyungang Second People's Hospital and Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital. The patients were divided into three groups: Bendamustine plus Rituximab (BR), Bendamustine plus Obinutuzumab (GB), Rituximab + Cyclophosphamide + Epirubicin / Doxorubicin + Vindesine + Prednisone (R-CHOP). The efficacy, safety and related prognostic factors of the treatment of FL with a regimen based on Bendamustine were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS
The ORR was 98% for the BR group, 94% for the GB group, and 72.3% for the R-CHOP group, while the CR rate was 61.2%,70% and 40.4%, respectively. The ORR and CR rates of the R-CHOP group were statistically different from those of the BR group and GB group ( < 0.05). The 3-year PFS rate of the BR group, GB group, and R-CHOP group was 89.6%, 90.9%, 48.9%, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in 3-year PFS between the R-CHOP group, BR group, and GB group ( < 0.05), while there was no statistically significant difference in 3-year OS( >0.05). Hematological adverse reactions were mainly bone marrow suppression. Lymphocytes and CD4T lymphocytes decreased to the lowest level about 6 months after treatment, and the incidence of lymphopenia in BR group and GB group was higher than that in R-CHOP group, with a statistical difference ( < 0.05). The higher incidence of non-Hematological adverse reactions were pulmonary infection, EB virus infection, hepatitis B virus reactivation, and gastrointestinal reactions without statistical difference in 3 groups ( >0.05), and were all controllable. The Receiver operating characteristic of CD4T lymphocyte count showed that AUC of BR group was 0.802, and the critical value was 258/uL; AUC of GB group was 0.754 with a critical value of 322/uL.
CONCLUSION
The treatment of FL with the Bendamustine containing regimen has good efficacy and controllable adverse reactions, but lymphocytopenia was significant after treatment, and the curative efficacy in combination with various CD20 monoclonal antibodies was different. The lowest CD4T lymphocyte count can be used as a predictive factor for the occurrence of infection and efficacy of the Bendamustine containing regimen for FL.

Cytotoxic, malignant, and mutagenic pollutants like heavy metals have emerged as a serious global threat to the ecosystem. Additionally, the quantity of noxious metals in water bodies has increased due to expanding industrial activities and the application of incompetent wastewater treatment techniques. Owing to the benefits of eco-friendly phytoremediation, the utilization of algae in photosynthetic microbial fuel cell (PMFC) for removal of heavy metals has attracted increasing attention among researchers. Therefore, a successful fabrication and operation of a modular PMFC for simultaneous algal biomass production was exhibited, thus resulting in significant removal efficiency of Cu(II) (94 %) and Co(II) (88 %). Moreover, Co(II)-accumulated algal biochar after thermal activation was utilized as a cathode catalyst for the first time and attained 64.2 mW/m of power density through PMFC. Hence, this easily synthesised green cathode catalyst proved its ability to enhance the overall performance of PMFC by attaining higher power output while treating wastewater.

Vegetable fats and oils are prone to contamination by mineral oil hydrocarbons due to the lipophilic and ubiquitous character of the latter. As the aromatic fraction of these hydrocarbons, MOAH, is associated with carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and detrimental effects on foetal development, finding strategies to limit or reduce their contamination is highly relevant. Deodorisation (i.e. a refining step) has shown the ability to remove MOAH < C25 in vegetable fats and oils, but there is little information about the structures removed. Therefore, the present study investigated the impact of deodorisation conditions on the removal of different structures of MOAH in spiked coconut oil. An inscribed central composite design was built with time and temperature as variables (0.5-4h, 150-240 °C), while pressure (3 mbar) and steam flow (1 g water/g oil per hour) were kept constant. The analysis of MOAH in the oil was performed using a fully automated liquid chromatography coupled with two parallel comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography systems with flame ionisation and time-of-flight mass spectrometric detection. Response surfaces plotting the MOAH loss according to time and temperature were built for different MOAH fractions. The latter were defined based on the number of aromatic rings (>3 or ≤3) and the number of carbon atoms present (C16-C20, C20-C24, C24-C35, C35-C40). It was found that at 200 °C, compounds < C24, including weakly alkylated triaromatics, could be reduced to below the limit of quantification, while at 230 °C, it was possible to remove >60% of the C24-C35 fraction, including pentaromatics of low alkylation.
