BACKGROUND
Persistent olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common symptom following SARS-CoV-2 infection that can greatly impact quality of life (QoL). Because coping strategies have been shown to moderate the effect of disease symptoms on functional and affective outcomes, this study aims to determine whether specific coping strategies are associated with and moderate QoL outcomes.
METHODOLOGY
Participants with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection underwent psychophysical olfactory testing with Sniffin' Sticks and completed questionnaires to elicit subjective olfactory function, coping strategies, olfactory-specific QoL, general QoL, and mental health.
RESULTS
There were 93 participants included in the study. Olfactory specific QoL scores were significantly worse among individuals with subjective and psychophysically measured OD compared to those with subjective and psychophysically confirmed normosmia. Olfactory-specific QoL, general QoL, and anxiety symptom scores were positively correlated with avoidant and disengagement coping among individuals with subjective and psychophysically measured OD. Depression symptom scores were positively correlated with avoidant and disengagement coping and negatively correlated with approach and engagement coping. There were no significant moderating effects on the association between olfactory performance and QoL or mental health screening assessment.
CONCLUSIONS
Approach and engagement coping mechanisms are associated with improved depression, whereas avoidant and disengagement coping tracks with worse QoL and mental health screening assessment, offering an opportunity to counsel patients accordingly.

Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) can experience reduced motivation and cognitive function, leading to challenges with goal-directed behavior. When selecting goals, people maximize 'expected value' by selecting actions that maximize potential reward while minimizing associated costs, including effort 'costs' and the opportunity cost of time. In MDD, differential weighing of costs and benefits are theorized mechanisms underlying changes in goal-directed cognition and may contribute to symptom heterogeneity. We used the Effort Foraging Task to quantify cognitive and physical effort costs, and patch leaving thresholds in low effort conditions (hypothesized to reflect perceived opportunity cost of time) and investigated their shared versus distinct relationships to clinical features in participants with MDD (N=52, 43 in-episode) and comparisons (N=27). Contrary to our predictions, none of the decision-making measures differed with MDD diagnosis. However, each of the measures were related to symptom severity, over and above effects of ability (i.e., performance). Greater anxiety symptoms were selectively associated with cognitive effort cost (i.e. greater willingness to exert effort). Anhedonia symptoms were associated with increased physical effort costs. Finally, greater physical anergia was related to decreased patch leaving thresholds. Markers of effort-based decision-making may inform understanding of MDD heterogeneity. Increased willingness to exert cognitive effort may contribute to anxiety symptoms such as rumination and worry. The association of decreased leaving thresholds with symptom severity is consistent with reward rate-based accounts of reduced vigor in MDD. Future research should address subtypes of depression with or without anxiety, which may relate differentially to cognitive effort decisions.

PURPOSE
Auditory processing disorder (APD) has been studied in both research and clinic settings, but the relation between the two has not been addressed. In a longitudinal research study (SICLiD), we found that children with clinically normal audiometry who had caregiver-reported listening difficulties (LiD), with or without clinically assessed APD, performed poorly on both listening and cognitive tests. Specific questions asked here were, for the children with LiD, what other neurodevelopmental clinical conditions were identified, what interventions were used by different clinical providers, and how clinical practice was predicted by research results.
METHODS
Study setting was a large, research-led, tertiary pediatric hospital. Electronic medical records of 74 children aged 6-13 years, recruited into SICLiD and assigned to an LiD group based on a validated and reliable caregiver report (ECLiPS), were independently reviewed. Focus was on clinical assessments and interventions following appointments provided in the Hospital Divisions of Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Psychology (Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics), and Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), prior to participation in SICLiD. Descriptive statistics on clinical encounters, identified conditions, and interventions were compared with quantitative, standardized performance on SICLiD assessments of listening and cognitive function. SICLiD z-scores were compared for participants with and without each clinical condition using univariate and logistic prediction analyses.
RESULTS
Most (86%) of the children with LiD had been evaluated by at least one clinical service. Overall, 24 assessment categories related to LiD, including APD, were identified. Most common conditions were attention (32%), language (28%), hearing (18%), anxiety (16%), and autism spectrum (6%) disorders. Performance on SICLiD measures varied significantly between providers, conditions, and interventions. Significant relationships between SICLiD and clinical conditions were mostly caregiver-reported items from the ECLiPS or the Children's Communication Checklist (CCC-2). Other significant correlations were scarce, but included the SCAN composite score, which predicted clinical language and attention, but not other auditory abilities or APD. SICLiD data combined with caregiver reports provided reliable predictions of all clinical conditions except APD.
CONCLUSIONS
The variety of disciplines, assessments, conditions and interventions revealed here supports previous studies showing that LiD and APD are multifaceted problems of neurodevelopment. Comparisons between clinical- and research-based assessments suggest a diagnostic path that prioritizes caregiver reports and selected psychometric tests for screening and diagnostic purposes.

OBJECTIVE
To characterise the socio-demographic characteristics, aged and health care needs, and aged care services used by older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people assessed for aged care service eligibility.
STUDY DESIGN
Population-based retrospective cohort study; analysis of Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA) National Historical Cohort data.
SETTING, PARTICIPANTS
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years or older who were first assessed for aged care service eligibility (permanent residential aged care, home care package, respite care, or transition care) during 1 January 2017 - 31 December 2019.
MAJOR OUTCOME MEASURES
Socio-demographic and aged care assessment characteristics; health conditions and functional limitations recorded at the time of the assessment; subsequent aged care service use.
RESULTS
The median age of the 6209 people assessed for aged care service eligibility was 67 years (interquartile range [IQR], 60-75 years), 3626 were women (58.4%), and 4043 lived in regional to very remote areas of Australia (65.1%). Aboriginal health workers were involved in 655 eligibility assessments (10.5%). The median number of health conditions was six (IQR, 4-8); 6013 (96.9%) had two or more health conditions, and 2592 (41.8%) had seven or more. Comorbidity was most frequent among people with mental health conditions: 597 of 1136 people with anxiety (52.5%) and 1170 of 2416 people with depression (48.5%) had seven or more other medical conditions. Geriatric syndromes were recorded for 2265 people (36.5%); assistance with at least one functional activity was required by 6190 people (99.7%). A total of 6114 people (98.5%) were approved for at least one aged care service, 3218 of whom (52.6%) subsequently used these services; the first services used were most frequently home care packages (1660 people, 51.6%).
CONCLUSION
Despite the high care needs of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, only 52% used aged care services for which they were eligible. It is likely that the health and aged care needs of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are not being adequately met.

OBJECTIVE
To compare and correlate musical performance anxiety (MPA) and vocal self-perception among amateur evangelical singers, focusing on the interaction between anxiety and aspects of performance in this sample.
METHOD
This study employed a cross-sectional and quantitative approach, involving 75 amateur gospel singers from evangelical churches, aged between 18 and 59 years. Data collection included the administration of a sample identification and characterization questionnaire, the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI), and the Singing Voice Handicap Index (S-VHI). The descriptive analysis used absolute and relative frequencies, measures of central tendency, and dispersion (mean and standard deviation [SD]). To compare the vocal self-assessment protocols and performance aspects, the Kruskal-Wallis test was applied. Spearman's correlation test was used for correlation analysis. All analyses were conducted with a significance level set at 5% (P < 0.05).
RESULTS
Vocal warm-up and cool-down activities, vocal discomfort after performance, and vocal self-assessment were significantly associated with scores on S-VHI, and the variable "instruments louder than voices" was associated with the K-MPAI score. Participants exhibited a mean K-MPAI score of 85.12 points (SD ± 36.6), and the vocal handicap of the sample had a mean score of 45.22 (SD ± 32.3). There was no statistically significant correlation between the protocols.
CONCLUSION
Incorporating vocal warm-up and cool-down activities was significantly associated with lower scores on S-VHI. Conversely, those experiencing postperformance vocal discomfort exhibited higher scores on S-VHI. Moreover, the absence of correlation between the assessment protocols suggests that while significant levels of voice handicap were observed, a direct link to MPA cannot be definitively established. Overall, these findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted factors shaping vocal health and performance among amateur evangelical singers, thereby guiding future research and interventions in this field.

Estrogens exert effects on cognition by acting on estrogen receptors (ER) including ERα. Activation of nuclear ERα results in classical genomic signaling leading to transcriptional changes that occur over hours to days. In contrast, activation of ERα localized to the membrane results in rapid signaling with effects occurring in seconds to minutes. The goal of the current study was to determine the role of membrane ERα in spatial memory. Female wildtype (WT) and transgenic mice that lack membrane ERα and express nuclear only ERα (NOER) were trained on an eight-arm radial-maze task. Following training, mice were tested on delay trials, in which delays ranging from 30 min to 5 h were inserted between the 4th and 5th arm choices. Performance was measured by number of proactive and retroactive errors. Proactive errors are short-term working memory errors defined by reentries into arms previously visited during the post-delay period or errors made during the pre-delay period. Retroactive errors are delay-dependent memory errors, defined as reentries into arms during the post-delay that were previously visited during the pre-delay. Consistent with a role for membrane ERα in rapid signaling, NOER mice made more proactive errors than WTs across all delays. NOER mice made more retroactive errors than WTs only after the 5-h delay. WT and NOER mice performed similarly on elevated plus maze and open field tests indicating no effects of membrane ERα on anxiety-related behavior or locomotor activity. Results reveal that membrane ERα plays important roles in both short-term and longer-term delay-dependent memory either directly or potentially indirectly through a role in the regulation of estradiol levels via the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.

Evidence is limited regarding the effect of prenatal benzodiazepine and z-hypnotic exposure and long-term neurodevelopment in childhood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of initiating benzodiazepine or z-hypnotic treatment in early, mid and late pregnancy on fifth-grade numeracy and literacy scholastic skills in children, by emulating three target trials. The trials are identical except for the timing of enrollment and the number of eligible individuals. Eligibility to the trials required a history of anxiety and/or depression prior to pregnancy. We used data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study, linked to the Medical Birth Registry of Norway, to emulate the trials. We adjusted for baseline covariates that were available at time 0 for each trial by inverse probability of treatment weighting using the propensity score. The findings of this study did not show any effect of mothers' initiation of treatment with benzodiazepines or z-hypnotics in early, mid or late pregnancy on the children's 5th grade test scores in numeracy and literacy. The study results provide reassurance for patients in need of benzodiazepines and z-hypnotics during pregnancy; however, these findings need to be interpreted with caution due to low study power in some of the analyses.

Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) that has demonstrated potential to modulate neural activity in a manner that may be conducive to improved cognitive performance. While other forms of NIBS, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), have received attention in the field as potential acute cognitive enhancers, CES remains relatively unexplored. The current study aimed to assess the efficacy of CES in improving acute cognitive performance under normal experimental conditions, as well as during sessions of induced situational anxiety (threat of shock or ToS). To study this question, participants completed a cognitive battery assessing processing speed and distinct aspects of executive functioning (working memory, inhibition, and task switching) in two separate sessions in which they received active and sham CES. Participants were randomly assigned to between subject groups of either situational anxiety (ToS) or control condition (no ToS). We predicted that active CES would improve performance on assessments of executive functioning (working memory, inhibition, and task switching) relative to sham CES under ToS. We did not find any significant effects of ToS, CES, or an interaction between ToS and CES for any measures of executive functioning or processing speed. These findings suggest that a single dose of CES does not enhance executive functioning or processing speed under normal conditions or during ToS.

Numerous studies on post-COVID syndrome (PCS) describe persisting symptoms of cognitive impairment. Previous studies, however, often investigated small samples or did not assess covariates possibly linked to cognitive performance. We aimed to describe 1) global and domain-specific cognitive performance in adults with PCS, controls with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection and healthy controls, 2) associations of sociodemographics, depressive symptoms, anxiety, fatigue, somatic symptoms and stress with cognitive performance and subjective cognitive decline (SCD), using data of the LIFE-Long-COVID-Study from Leipzig, Germany. Group differences in cognitive performance and associations with sociodemographic and neuropsychiatric covariates were assessed using multivariable regression analyses. Our study included n = 561 adults (M: 48.8, SD: 12.7; % female: 70.6). Adults with PCS (n = 410) performed worse in tests on episodic memory (b = -1.07, 95 % CI: -1.66, -0.48) and visuospatial abilities (b = -3.92, 95 % CI: -6.01, -1.83) compared to healthy controls (n = 64). No impairments were detected for executive function, verbal fluency, and global cognitive performance. Odds of SCD were not higher in PCS. A previous SARS-CoV-2 infection without PCS (n = 87) was not linked to cognitive impairment. Higher age and higher levels of stress and fatigue were linked to worse performance in several cognitive domains. Routine administration of tests for episodic memory and visuospatial abilities might aid in the identification of individuals at risk for cognitive impairment when reporting symptoms of PCS. Low numbers of participants with severe COVID-19 infections possibly limit generalizability of our findings.

This pilot study evaluated the impact of pistachio consumption on cognitive performance and mood in overweight young adults. Pistachios were characterized (chemical and nutraceutical), and a baseline-final, uncontrolled nutritional intervention was performed (28 g of pistachio/28 days). Psychometric tests were applied to estimate cognitive performance and mood; anthropometric evaluation, biochemical analysis, and plasma antioxidant activity were included. The main component of nuts was lipids (48.1%). Pistachios consumption significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced waist circumference (-1.47 cm), total cholesterol (-10.21 mg/dL), LDL (-6.57 mg/dL), and triglycerides (-21.07 mg/dL), and increased plasma antioxidant activity. Pistachio supplementation improved risk tolerance (p ≤ 0.006) and decision-making strategy (p ≤ 0.002; BART-task), executive functions (BCST-task; p ≤ 0.006), and selective and sustained attention (Go/No-Go-test; p ≤ 0.016). The mood state was positively modulated (p ≤ 0.05) for anxiety, anger-hostility, and sadness-depression. These results show for the first time the benefits of pistachio consumption on cognitive performance and mood in overweight young adults.
