Pharmaceutical cocrystals ( ; Food and Drug Administration, 2018) are crystalline solids produced through supramolecular chemistry to modulate the physicochemical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Despite their extensive development in interdisciplinary sciences, this is a pioneering study on the efficacy of pharmaceutical cocrystals in wound healing and scar reducing. Curcumin-pyrogallol cocrystal (CUR-PYR) was accordingly cherry-picked since its superior physicochemical properties adequately compensate for limitative drawbacks of curcumin (CUR). CUR-PYR has been synthesized by a liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) method and characterized via FT-IR, DSC, and PXRD analyses. antibacterial study indicated that CUR-PYR cocrystal, CUR+PYR physical mixture (PM), and PYR are more effective against both Gram-negative ( and ) and Gram-positive ( and ) bacteria in comparison with CUR. results also demonstrated that the viability of HDF and NIH-3T3 cells treated with CUR-PYR were improved more than those received CUR which is attributed to the effect of PYR in the form of cocrystal. The wound healing process has been monitored through a 15 day experiment on 75 male rats stratified into six groups: five groups treated by CUR-PYR+Vaseline (CUR-PYR.ung), CUR+PYR+Vaseline (CUR+PYR.ung), CUR+Vaseline (CUR.ung), PYR+Vaseline (PYR.ung), and Vaseline (VAS) ointments and a negative control group of 0.9% sodium chloride solution (NS). It was revealed that the wounds under CUR-PYR.ung treatment closed by day 12 postsurgery, while the wounds in other groups failed to reach the complete closure end point until the end of the experiment. Surprisingly, a diminutive scar (3.89 ± 0.97% of initial wound size) was observed in the CUR-PYR.ung treated wounds by day 15 after injury, followed by corresponding values for PYR.ung (12.08 ± 2.75%), CUR+PYR.ung (13.89 ± 5.02%), CUR.ung (16.24 ± 6.39%), VAS (18.97 ± 6.89%), and NS (20.33 ± 5.77%). Besides, investigating histopathological parameters including inflammation, granulation tissue, re-epithelialization, and collagen deposition signified outstandingly higher ability of CUR-PYR cocrystal in wound healing than either of its two constituents separately or their simple PM. It was concluded that desired solubility of the prepared cocrystal was essentially responsible for accelerating wound closure and promoting tissue regeneration which yielded minimal scarring. This prototype research suggests a promising application of pharmaceutical cocrystals for the purpose of wound healing.

Mineral oils are used in substantial quantities for the production of varnishes and inks due to their abundance and versatility. However, as part of the production process, some of mineral oil components are separated as waste material, whereupon they can mix with air, water, or soil and become potentially harmful to the environment. Almost all these waste materials are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemicals that can easily evaporate at room temperature and have toxic effect. Therefore, a novel green, mineral oil-free offset printing ink was produced using vegetable oil esters as bio-renewable raw materials. Accompanying varnishes were prepared with linseed oil, methyl oleate, octyl stearate, and four types of resin (A, B, C, and D). The application of these varnishes to magenta color offset ink was subsequently studied to screen out the best combination of resin and ester in terms of setting time. Meanwhile, dyeing force tests were conducted to evaluate the ink's printability, while rheological analysis was done via viscosity and flowability tests. The setting time of the magenta color offset ink made by varnish A was observed to be considerably shorter than that of the ink samples prepared using varnishes B, C, and D. Furthermore, varnish A proved to be a good alternative varnish for the production of yellow, cyan, and black color offset printing inks. Samples of these inks were printed on coated paper, and their printability was contrasted against that of vegetable oil-based (pure vegetable oil), mineral oil-based, and other mineral oil-free offset printing inks. Results determined that the varnishes produced with linseed oil, methyl oleate, and octyl stearate can replace mineral oil-based varnishes for the production of offset printing ink.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES
Alopecia areata (AA) is a T-cell driven autoimmune disease, which results in hair loss. This study aims to determine the efficacy, tolerability and safety of different concentrations of anthralin in the treatment of pediatric AA.
METHODS
A retrospective cohort study of patients < 18 yo diagnosed with AA treated with anthralin at SickKids Hospital, Toronto dermatology outpatient clinic in 2016 - 2018. Anthralin used at 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 1% in petrolatum at short contact, at increments of 15 minutes every week until a 1 hr maximum contact achieved. No other treatment was used in conjunction. Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) scores (SS) were determined using photographs and descriptions to assess severity of alopecia at baseline and post anthralin treatment.
RESULTS
A total of 11 charts were reviewed in this retrospective cohort. Hair loss pattern; 3 patients with patchy, 6 had mixed (patchy and ophiasis), and 2 were totalis. All except for 1 patient had failed traditional treatments. One patient had complete hair regrowth, 3 showed more than 85% hair re-growth and 7 patients showed more than 75% hair regrowth, the average time for this to occur was 6.5 months. None of the patients experience serious side effects.
CONCLUSIONS
Our study demonstrated the efficacy and tolerability of topical anthralin 0.1% to 1% in pediatric alopecia areata. In our study, anthralin 0.2% appears to offer the best performance and tolerability profile among the different concentrations used, with treatment course of at least 6 months in order to achieve more than 75% hair regrowth.

Paraphenylenediamine (PPD) is an aromatic amine dye that may cause allergic contact dermatitis. This study examines the epidemiology of allergic patch test reactions to PPD. This retrospective analysis characterizes individuals tested to PPD (1% petrolatum) by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (1994-2018). Demographics and dermatitis site(s) were compared between PPD-allergic and PPD-negative patients. PPD reactions were analyzed by reaction strength, clinical relevance, occupational relatedness, and source as well as coreactivity with structurally related compounds. Of 54,917 patients tested to PPD, 3095 (5.6%) had an allergic patch test reaction. Compared with PPD-negative patients, PPD-allergic patients had significantly greater odds of age >40 years (odds ratio [OR] 1.55 [95% confidence interval; CI 1.43-1.69]) and female gender (OR 1.52 [95% CI 1.41-1.66]), but lower odds of being White (OR 0.66 [95% CI 0.60-0.71]). The most common primary anatomic sites of dermatitis were face (25.5%), hands (21.9%), and scattered/generalized pattern (15.5%). Over half (55.3%) of PPD reactions were ++ or +++ at the final reading and 60.9% were currently relevant. Common exposure sources included hair dye (73.5%) and clothing/shoes/apparel (3.9%). Occupationally related reactions occurred in 8.3%, most commonly in hairdressers/cosmetologists (72.8%). The most common coreactions were benzocaine (11.3%), -isopropyl-'-phenyl--phenylenediamine (6.7%), disperse dye mix (6.5%), and black rubber mix (5.1%). The 24-year percentage of allergic reactions to PPD was 5.6%. PPD allergy was associated with female gender and age >40 years. PPD allergic patients were less likely to be White. Allergic reactions were usually clinically relevant and hair dye was the most frequently identified source.

PURPOSE
Surgical fires pose a substantial risk to patients and can cause significant injury, especially in oculofacial surgery. Ocular surface lubricants can potentially act as fuel for an operating room fire. We present an experimental analysis of the flammability of 9 commonly used ophthalmic lubricants under 4 ignition sources used in oculofacial surgery with and without supplemental oxygen.
METHODS
The flammability of 9 ophthalmic lubricants were tested under various operating room conditions. Each lubricant was exposed to 4 different ignition sources: an open flame lighter, monopolar cautery, bipolar cautery, and hand-held high temperature cautery, and the response of the lubricant was recorded. The testing was conducted both in room air and with 6 L/minute of 100% oxygen directed at the lubricant through a nasal cannula. Any reaction in which there was ignition, sparking, smoking, or a transient or permanent change in appearance of the lubricant was deemed notable.
RESULTS
Of the 9 lubricants tested, 4 displayed a reaction to the ignition source. Without supplemental oxygen, 100% petrolatum and neomycin-polysporin-bacitracin-hydrocortisone ointment produced some smoke when applied with the high temperature cautery. Notably, under both the conditions of no supplemental oxygen and with the addition of 6 L/minute of 100% oxygen, the carboxymethylcellulose drops and lidocaine jelly both conducted and sparked with the monopolar cautery leaving visible burn marks on the paper.
CONCLUSIONS
The overall fire hazard posed by ocular surface lubricants is low. Some topical lubricants can conduct electricity from monopolar cautery, which could increase the risk of inadvertent electrical burns. Certain lubricants could potentially become a fuel source when used in combination with hand-held high temperature battery cautery. Bipolar cautery was not associated with either increased conductivity or flammability with any of the lubricants tested.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Prevention of atopic dermatitis in high-risk neonates via different types of moisturizer application: A randomized, blinded, parallel, three-group, phase II trial (PAF study).
BACKGROUND
The effectiveness of moisturizers in preventing infant atopic dermatitis (AD) remains unclear. We previously showed that using 2e moisturizer of commercial moisturizer (Shiseido Japan Co., Ltd.) at least once a day significantly prevented AD in infants as compared with as-needed petroleum jelly. This trial aimed to determine the effectiveness of twice- or once-daily application of Fam's Baby moisturizer (Fam's Inc.) in preventing AD compared with once-daily 2e moisturizer.
METHODS
This trial was a single-centre, three-parallel-group, assessor-blinded, superiority, individually randomized, controlled, phase II trial that was conducted from 25 August 2020 to 28 September 2021. We randomly assigned 60 newborns with at least one parent or sibling who has AD to receive Fam's Baby moisturizer twice daily (Group A) or once daily (Group B), or 2e once daily (Group C) in a 1:1:1 ratio until they were 32 weeks old. The primary outcome was the time of AD onset.
RESULTS
Atopic dermatitis was observed in 11/20 (55%), 5/20 (25%) and 10/20 (50%), infants in Groups A, B and C, respectively. Cumulative incidence values for AD according to the Kaplan-Meier method showed that infants in Group B tended to maintain an intact skin for a longer period than those in Group C (median time, not reached [NR] vs. 212 days, log-rank test, p = 0.064). Cox regression analysis showed that the risk of AD tended to be lower in Group B (hazard ratio with group C as control, 0.36; 95% confidential intervals: 0.12-1.06). No serious adverse events occurred in any of the enrolled infants.
CONCLUSION
Fam's Baby moisturizer may better prevent AD than 2e. Further large-scale trials should be performed to confirm the efficacy of Fam's Baby moisturizer in preventing AD in infants.

Raw materials suitable for a sustainable society have attracted interest in the cosmetics industry. We focused on rice bran as a sustainable material and evaluated the gelation behavior of paraffin extracted from rice bran (rice paraffin) against liquid paraffin, squalane, jojoba oil, and silicone oil. In addition, the frictional properties of the prepared organogel on an artificial skin surface were evaluated using a sinusoidal motion friction evaluation system. Rice paraffin solidified all oils even at the lowest wax concentration of 5 wt%. The hardness and kinetic friction coefficient μ increased with an increase in the wax composition. The hardness and μ of organogels solidified with rice paraffin were smaller than those of gels solidified with petroleum-derived paraffin. These differences are caused by the smaller carbon amount of rice paraffin. The friction parameters depended on the type of oil: the μ of RLG composed of rice and liquid paraffin was greater than that of the other three oils (R, L, and G denote rice paraffin, liquid paraffin, and gel, respectively). These findings promote the development of lipsticks and cleansing gels consisting of sustainable development goal-responsive raw materials.

Many animals display innate preferences for some odors, but the physiological mechanisms underlying these preferences are poorly understood. Here, with behavioral tests, we establish a model system well suited to investigating olfactory mechanisms, the locust Schistocerca americana. We conducted open field tests in an arena designed to provide only olfactory cues to guide navigation choices. We found that newly hatched locusts navigated toward, and spent more time near, the odor of wheat grass than humidified air. In similar tests, we found that hatchlings avoided moderate concentrations of major individual components of the food blend odor, 1-hexanol (1% v/v) and hexanal (0.9% v/v) diluted in mineral oil relative to control presentations of unscented mineral oil. Hatchlings were neither attracted nor repelled by a lower concentration (0.1% v/v) of 1-hexanol but were moderately attracted to a low concentration (0.225% v/v) of hexanal. We quantified the behavior of the animals by tracking their positions with the Argos software toolkit. Our results establish that hatchlings have a strong, innate preference for food odor blend, but the valence of the blend's individual components may be different and may change depending on the concentration. Our results provide a useful entry point for an analysis of physiological mechanisms underlying innate sensory preferences.

The characterization of organic contaminants in sewage sludge is a fundamental step to address the relevant most appropriate management practice. In this perspective, C10-C40 hydrocarbon content was considered in Italy a crucial parameter to be considered, in spite of its irrelevance in the literature. The very complex mixture of organic substances of both biogenic and anthropogenic origin the sludge is made up of makes sewage sludge a matrix of uniqueness nature, and the analytic determination of hydrocarbon content through conventional procedures may be subjected to overestimation. In this work, optimization of two conventional protocols for the determination of mineral oil (EN14039 and IRSA CNR gravimetric method) were run with attention to anthropogenic compounds potentially affecting the C10-C40 mineral hydrocarbons determination. Effects from the first manipulations of sewage sludge samples to extraction procedure and clean-up operations were investigated. A new simple procedure was set up and tested on 30 samples from different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Through a simple extraction with hexane (12 mL per 2 g of dried sludge, acidified with HCl conc.) at room temperature for 2 h, followed by a clean-up on Florisil column (10 mL-2 g) a confident determination of C10-C40 were obtained with respect to conventional optimized procedures. Variability within the range 0.06-9.49% was calculated with respect to the average value determined using three different methods, with an average value of 2.48 ± 2.37%, demonstrating the robustness of the determination. Up to 3% of the total hydrocarbons were identified as naturally occurring, namely terpenes, squalenes and deoxygenized sterols, passed through the clean-up Florisil column. A significant incidence (up to 75%) of the final overall C10-C40 content was found to be related to the C10-C20 component, originally present in the commercial polyelectrolytes in emulsion, widely used for conditioning before mechanical dewatering.
