The 2,4-toluenediamine (TDA) is one of the most important chemicals in the polyurethane industry, produced by the catalytic hydrogenation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT). The development of novel catalysts that can be easily recovered from the reaction mixture is of paramount importance. In our work, a NiFeO/N-BCNT supported magnetic catalyst was prepared by a modified coprecipitation method. The catalyst support alone also showed activity in the synthesis of TDA. Platinum nanoparticles were deposited on the catalyst support surface by a fast, relatively simple, and efficient sonochemical method, resulting in a readily applicable catalytically active system. The prepared catalyst exhibited high activity in hydrogenation tests, which was proved by the exceptionally high DNT conversion (100% for 120 min at 333 K) and TDA yield (99%). Furthermore, the magnetic catalyst can be easily recovered from the reaction medium by the action of an external magnetic field, which can greatly reduce catalyst loss during separation.

Natalisin (NTL) is a conserved neuropeptide, only present in insects, that has been reported to regulate their sexual activity. In this study, we investigated the involvement of NTL in the reproductive behaviors of a major invasive pest, Spodoptera frugiperda. We identified NTL precursor-encoded transcripts, and evaluated their transcript levels in different stages and tissues of S. frugiperda. The results showed that the NTL transcript level was expressed in both male and female pupae and both male and female adults in the later stage. It was highly expressed in male pupae, 3-day-old male and female adults, and 5-day-old male adults. In different tissues, the expression level is higher in the male and female adult brain and male testis. Immunohistochemical staining of the brain of S. frugiperda female and male adults revealed that three pairs of brain neurons of S. frugiperda adults of both sexes secreted and expressed NTL. To study the role of NTL in reproductive behaviors, NTL was silenced in S. frugiperda male and female adults by RNA interference (RNAi) technology, the results showed that silencing NTL could significantly affect the sexual activity behavior of the adults, reducing the calling rate of females, the courtship rate of males, and the mating rate. In summary, this study emphasizes the important role of NTL in regulating the mating behavior and sexual activity of S. frugiperda in both male and female adults, potentially laying a foundation to employ NTL as a new insect-specific target to control populations of pest insects.

Durian (Durio zibethinus L.) fruit pulp is a rich source of γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-EC), a direct precursor to the antioxidant glutathione (GSH). This study elucidated the in vitro neuroprotective potential of unripe durian fruit pulp extract (UDE) against HO-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells and neuroinflammation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 cells. Treatments with γ-EC, GSH standards, or UDE exhibited no cytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y and BV-2 cells, except at high concentrations. A 4-h pretreatment with 100 µM γ-EC or UDE containing 100 µM γ-EC significantly increased SH-SY5Y cell viability post HO induction. Moreover, a similar pretreatment reduced LPS-stimulated production of proinflammatory cytokines in BV-2 cells. The neuroprotective effect of UDE is primarily attributed to γ-EC provision and the promotion of GSH synthesis, which in turn elevates intracellular GSH levels and reduces proinflammatory cytokines. This study identifies γ-EC in UDE as a potential neuroprotective biomarker boosting intracellular GSH levels, providing insights into UDE's therapeutic potential.

Elevated levels of the gut pro-hormone Proneurotensin (proNT) have been found to predict development of cardiovascular disease. However, it is still unknown whether higher proNT levels are associated with subclinical vascular damage. Herein, we investigated the relationship between higher proNT concentrations and augmented pulse pressure (PP) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), indicators of increased arterial stiffness and subclinical atherosclerosis, respectively. Clinical characteristics, PP and cIMT were evaluated in 154 non-diabetic individuals stratified into tertiles according to fasting serum proNT concentrations. We found that, subjects with higher proNT levels exhibited a worse lipid profile and insulin sensitivity, increased C-reactive protein levels, along with higher values of PP and cIMT as compared to the lowest proNT tertile. Prevalence of elevated PP (≥ 60 mmHg) and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (IMT > 0.9 mm) was increased in the highest tertile of proNT. In a logistic regression analysis adjusted for several confounders, subjects with higher proNT levels displayed a fivefold raised risk of having elevated PP values (OR 5.36; 95%CI 1.04-27.28; P = 0.05) and early carotid atherosclerosis (OR 4.81; 95%CI 1.39-16.57; P = 0.01) as compared to the lowest proNT tertile. In conclusion, higher circulating levels of proNT are a biomarker of subclinical vascular damage independent of other atherosclerotic risk factors.

With the increase in the dependency on digital devices, the incidence of myopia, a precursor of various ocular diseases, has risen significantly. Because myopia and eyeball volume are related, myopia progression can be monitored through eyeball volume estimation. However, existing methods are limited because the eyeball shape is disregarded during estimation. We propose an automated eyeball volume estimation method from computed tomography images that incorporates prior knowledge of the actual eyeball shape. This study involves data preprocessing, image segmentation, and volume estimation steps, which include the truncated cone formula and integral equation. We obtained eyeball image masks using U-Net, HFCN, DeepLab v3 +, SegNet, and HardNet-MSEG. Data from 200 subjects were used for volume estimation, and manually extracted eyeball volumes were used for validation. U-Net outperformed among the segmentation models, and the proposed volume estimation method outperformed comparative methods on all evaluation metrics, with a correlation coefficient of 0.819, mean absolute error of 0.640, and mean squared error of 0.554. The proposed method surpasses existing methods, provides an accurate eyeball volume estimation for monitoring the progression of myopia, and could potentially aid in the diagnosis of ocular diseases. It could be extended to volume estimation of other ocular structures.

This work deals with promoting the efficiency of removing the cationic and ionic dyes by new aerogel-carbon nanostructures. For cleaner production the rice straw-pulping black liquors, which regards serious environmental risk during routine disposing, is used in preparing the aerogel precursors. These aerogels (AGBs) depend on using pulping black liquor in hybrid with resorcinol and the less carcinogenic formaldehyde butyraldehyde. Black liquors from five pulping processes are used, Elemental, thermogravimetric (TGA and DTG), and FTIR-ATR analyses are used to characterize the carbon precursors. While their adsorption behavior toward cationic and anionic dyes are accessed via iodine-value, adsorption capacity and kinetic models, textural characterization, and SEM. The TGA measurements reveal that AGBs from BLs of neutral sulfite and soda-borohydride pulping reagents have higher activation and degradation energies than other aerogels. In terms of cationic and anionic dyes adsorption as well as textural characterization, the AGB-CNSs surpass that made from BLs. The discarded KOH/NHOH black liquor is used to synthesize the best aerogel precursor for producing cationic methylene blue dye (MB) adsorbent, where it provides an adsorption capacity 242.1 mg/g. The maximum anionic brilliant blue dye (BB) adsorption capacity, 162.6 mg/g, is noticed by Kraft BL-aerogel-CNSs. These finding data overcome the literature carbon adsorbents based on lignin precursors. All examined CNSs toward MB dye follow the Langmuir adsorption equilibrium; while primarily the Freundlich model for BB dye. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model well fits the adsorption kinetics of investigated AGB-CNSs. The textural characterization and SEM revealed a mixture of mesoporous and micro porous features in the CNSs.

In the search of novel photocatalysts to increase the effect of visible light in photocatalysis, g-CN (CN) has become a shining star. Rare earth metals have been used as dopant material to reinforce the photocatalytic activity of CN due to their unique electron configuration recently. In this present study, the pure and different amounts of Ho-doped g-CN (HoCN) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized using urea as a precursor by the one-pot method. Morphological, structural, optical, and vibrational properties of the synthesized photocatalysts were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, TGA, XPS, FTIR, PL, TRPL, Raman, DRS, and BET analyses. In addition, theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) were meticulously carried out to delve the changes in the structural and electronic structure of CN with holmium doping. According to calculations, the chemical potential, electrophilicity, and chemical softness are higher for HoCN, while HOMO-LUMO gap, dipole moment, and the chemical hardness are lower for the pure one. Thus, holmium doping becomes desirable with low chemical hardness which indicates more effectivity and smaller HOMO-LUMO gap designate high chemical reactivity. To determine the photocatalytic efficiency of the pure and doped CN photocatalysts, the degradation of methylene blue (MB) was monitored under visible light. The results indicate that holmium doping has improved the photocatalytic activities of CN samples. Most strikingly, this improvement is noticeable for the 0.2 mmol doped CN sample that showed two times better photocatalytic activity than the pure one.

CoFe@C was first prepared by calcining the precursor of CoFe-metal-organic framework-74 (CoFe-MOF-74), then an electrochemical sensor for the determination of neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) was constructed, which was stemmed from the novel CoFe@C/Nafion composite film modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The CoFe@C/Nafion composite was verified by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to evaluate its electrical properties as a modified material for an electrochemical sensor. Compared with CoFe-MOF-74 precursor modified electrode, CoFe@C/Nafion electrode exhibited a great synergic catalytic effect and extremely increased the oxidation peak signal of NHDC. The effects of various experimental conditions on the oxidation of NHDC were investigated and the calibration plot was tested. The results bespoken that CoFe@C/Nafion GCE has good reproducibility and anti-interference under the optimal experimental conditions. In addition, the differential pulse current response of NHDC was linear with its concentration within the range 0.08 ~ 20 µmol/L, and the linear regression coefficient was 0.9957. The detection limit was as low as 14.2 nmol/L (S/N = 3). In order to further verify the feasibility of the method, it was successfully used to determine the content of NHDC in Chinese medicine, with a satisfactory result, good in accordance with that of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The stereoselective synthesis of -diaminopimelic acid (-DAP), the key cross-linking amino acid of the peptidoglycan cell wall layer in Gram-negative bacteria, and its biological precursor, l,l-DAP, is described. The key step involved stereoselective reduction of a common enone-derived amino acid by substrate- or reagent-based control. Overman rearrangement of the resulting allylic alcohols, concurrent alkene hydrogenation and trichloroacetamide reduction, and subsequent ruthenium-catalyzed arene oxidation completed the synthesis of each stereoisomer. The synthetic utility of this approach was demonstrated with the efficient preparation of an l,l-DAP-derived dipeptide.

A redox co-precipitation method was employed to synthesize CeMn homogeneous solid solutions, utilizing various alcohols as activating agents. Ethanol effectively orchestrated the precipitation of CeO and MnO, promoting their co-growth. As a result, the CeMn-EA achieved 90 % toluene conversion at 218 ℃ (T =218 ℃) with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 48000 ml/(g·h). It also demonstrated high adaptability to increased WHSV, suggesting its potential for industrial-scale applications. The uniform dispersion of Ce and Mn accelerated the coupling between Ce/Ce and Mn/Mn, engineering numerous oxygen vacancies, which enhanced the activation of gas-phase oxygen and the mobility of lattice oxygen. In situ DRIFTS confirmed that toluene oxidation accommodated both Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) and Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanisms, with benzoate identified as a pivotal intermediate. Enhanced oxygen mobility facilitated the cleavage of the benzene ring, which was the rate-determining step. Additionally, the introduction of HO significantly enhanced the dissociation and adsorption of toluene and facilitated the activation of gas-phase oxygen. At higher temperatures, HO could further activate lattice oxygen engaging in toluene oxidation. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have emerged as major air pollutants due to the changes in air pollution patterns. They can act as precursors to near-surface ozone and haze. Toluene, a typical VOC, is primarily released from anthropogenic sources and poses significant risks to human health and the environment. Ce-based catalysts have been demonstrated efficiency in toluene oxidation due to their excellent oxygen storage and release properties. This study synthesized CeMn homogeneous solid solutions utilizing various alcohols as activating agents, which possessed abundant oxygen vacancies and optimum oxygen activation capacity to oxidize toluene in time.
